Laptop buying help

I am looking to buy a new laptop after having enough 2012 Samsung Laptop not being able to run Adobe software like after effects/light room. I have a previous version of premiere but it still gets laggy. The main issue with it being that it is a Windows 8 laptop and these programmes require windows 10.

I've been looking at the Lenovo Ideapad L340 with: intel i7- 9750h, 16gb ram and the Nvidea Geforce Gtx 1050 3gb. I'd be primarily using it for things like video editing for university and occasion gaming. With my student discount if narrowed it down to £689 and well what I'm asking essentially is will it be able to run what I'm asking for well.

[AMA] Huawei Matebook D 15 (2020) AMD Ryzen 3500U

Hey everyone,

I just got this laptop delivered today. Was an impulse buy - 2nd laptop (3rd PC) to replace my previous ultrabook, Ideapad 710s.

Here are some things that you should know.

Specs Processor: AMD Ryzen 3500U GPU: Radeon Vega 8 RAM: 8GB (Soldered) Storage: 256 GB SSD + 1 TB HDD

Design Looks too much like the MacBook Pro, if I'm being honest. Especially since I got mine in silver. Putting that aside, this is one sexy laptop. Everything about the laptop's looks screams premium, although not exactly priced as such.

Build Quality Pretty impressed tbh. The hinge operates smoothly while also not being loose. The machine is built of metal with minimal flex when pressed on the keyboard and twisting the top side. I guess if there's anything good out of copying Apple, it'll be the premium feel and sturdiness.

Performance I mean, I can't really ask much from a sub-$500 laptop. Played some light Cities: Skyline, watched a couple of movies, all seems to be alright. Won't be expecting to play heavy games on this, but some reviews mention that this laptop can play Witcher 3 (Albeit at lowest settings and 30 fps). Once quarantine is over, this laptop will definitely be my main for remote work and just casual stuff.

Other notes

  • The fingerprint scanner is embedded into the power button. Plenty fast
  • USB-C charging. PD-capable. Supplied power brick is small, but does 65W
  • The webcam is hidden in the keyboard via a button. Nostril view.
  • FHD IPS 15.6" screen. Some reviews said ~66% colour accuracy (sRGB), for me it just feels less punchy colours.

27/03/20 - Dell Latitude E6430

I've used this laptop as one of my main machines for about four years now, and previously to this I had another Dell Latitude, the D630 from 2007.

The Latitude is Dell's business line of laptops, and being a business machine, there are certain categories where this machine does excel.

  • Build quality

These machines are designed to last for years and be used all day every day. That tends to mean, on average, a more robust construction than consumer grade laptops, which can only be a good thing. It'll last, it'll put up with an occasional knock. All good.

  • Maintenance

Anyone who's done a little bit of tinkering with laptops will know that the ease with which you can remove the covers and get into the guts varies enormously from machine to machine. Some are easy, some are only held together with screws, some you need a spudger to part plastic covers, hoping not to break plastic retainers, some have dozens of screws of subtly different sizes, all little things that can trip you up and make working on some laptops a nightmare. This is another point where business laptops have an advantage. They're made to be deployed in their thousands into a business, where maybe only a handful of long-suffering techs are destined to work on them, and if they're a pain to work on, then that manufacturer won't get the contract. Simple as that.

To put it into perspective, on the E6430 I have, you can take the back cover off with only five screws (well three technically, two are just to remove the main storage drive), and that gives you access to all major components, the optical drive bay, hard drive, RAM, expansion cards (bluetooth, wifi, 3G if you have it) and even the CPU. Yes the CPU. Read on.

  • Upgrades.

This is the number one place that business machines, at least of the era this machine is from kick the ass of other classes of laptop, and that's normally for one reason. As I said above they tend to be easier to work with, because they're built to be maintained. Also, what tends to happen (at least in the case of the Latitudes I've used) is that every spec level of a particular machine is based on a common chassis. By which I mean, the E6430 was available with a range of processors from the third-gen Core (Ivy Bridge) range from the i3 dual core no HT right up to their quad core HT i7 range. But it was the same motherboard, because the processor is socketed.

So not only is the usual laptop fare available for upgrade, like the memory and storage, but you can also upgrade the CPU pretty easily. On mine, to get to the CPU takes a grand total of nine screws. Five to take the back cover off, and they're all the same size as each other, and four to remove the cooler, which are also the same size as each other.

What this means, ultimately, is you could buy one of the machines from the cheaper end of the specification, then over time, upgrade it to one of the higher end models. That's exactly what I did with mine. Bought it as an i3, with 4GB of RAM, and it now has 8GB of RAM, an i7 (the particular one I chose is over twice as fast), it has a bluetooth module, and I even added a secondary hard drive instead of the optical drive (another option some business machines give you - multi use bays), and swapped the keyboard to one that has a backlight.

Other upgrades that I could do, but haven't done, are upgrading the Wireless N Wifi card to an 80211ac capable card - the third antenna is in there waiting to be used, and there is even a different display that could fit this machine, which has a 1600x900 resolution, instead of the standard 1366x768 version I have. Very very upgradeable machines these are.

About the only upgrade that isn't as straightforward (but is very much possible) is upgrading the graphics capability. The machine I have has built in Intel HD4000 graphics, but there was an option that had Nvidia NVS5200M (pretty much the business equivalent of the Geforce GT620M), but to upgrade to that, you'd have to swap the whole motherboard. Very doable, but I'm not going to lie through my teeth and say that's a straightforward task every owner of one of these should attempt.

  • Conclusion

Even just as they are, these are excellent laptops. This is a 2012 laptop and still works absolutely fine with Windows 10, and it's nice to use, with a good quality keyboard, and just general good build quality all round.

The only way it falls down nowadays performance wise is it won't play new games, but then again it was never designed as a gaming powerhouse. That said, I can run GTAV on this machine (2013 that came out!) - I won't say it runs silky smooth, but it's definitely playable. Your mileage may vary. For me as long as it's playable, 60FPS or not doesn't bother me.

The only real downside which I will happily admit to, particularly with the more powerful, quad core chips, is they do get rather hot during use. But I use a laptop cooling stand, which helps with that. Highly recommended. Any questions, shoot and I'll see if I can help.

What panels are the Asus ROG Zephyrus S GX531GX-XB77 HDR Limited Edition and the Asus ROG Zephyrus S GX701GX-XB78 using?

Does anyone have these models or know? Both claim to be HDR400 models btw.

Sky X7C [Clevo P775TM1-G] Performance, Build and Reliability

I'm considering pulling the trigger on the Eurocom Sky X7C as my next laptop. My lab pays for the purchase, so I am planning on maxing out the CPU, GPU and cooling solutions. I am wondering if anyone has any experience of ownership, and if so what has the performance (i7 9700K + RTX 2080 + 32 GB) and build quality been like in your experience? I am particularly worried about the chassis quality, especially the screen portion. Any input is highly appreciated.

Is my Lenovo L340 underperforming?

I got this laptop yesterday with the i7 9750h, gtx 1650, 16gb ram config and its performance is weird. Weird in the way that the 9750h runs at 2.6Ghz in games which heavily bottlenecks the gpu. CPU usage drops to sub 20% and if i try to play without the laptop plugged into a wall outlet, no game crosses 30 fps at its lowest setting. The laptop cannot even maintain 60 fps in PUBG at very low settings while plugged in. Intel XTU software shows the chip isn't throttling in any way. During gaming, the CPU hits 70 degrees max at 2.6Ghz. In the Aida64 stress test the CPU reaches stability at around 3.3Ghz at 80 degrees (tested for 20+ min). I have tried messing around with the power settings in windows and everything is set to maximum performance. All the drivers are up to date. I guess the only solution that i can think of now is reinstalling windows. Can owners of this laptop try and figure out what is causing this bottleneck?

[AMA] Lenovo Ideapad L340-15IRH Gaming (i7-9750H, GTX 1650 4GB, 8 GB of ram)

The reason why I purchased this laptop was because I wanted the most efficient laptop that I could plug and play on an airplane (the airplane's AC is usually rated for 75w). I already know what kind of performance I could get out of the i7-9750 since I previously owned a laptop that had the i7-8750h.. Anyhow, I couldn't really find many reviews online, and the ones that I found was a Russian and Thai review video. So just for fun and also jumping on one of lenovo's sales, I bought one. The laptop just came yesterday and my opinions are neutral right now. However, here are some of my biggest disappointments. The computer has only one ram slot! I am not talking about having memory soldered on the motherboard and having an additional slot, I am talking about the computer only having one slot. So that means no dual channel memory. My second disappointment was the Lenovo don't give you the brackets to install a 2.5 inch drive even though this computer supports it. I now have to buy a cable and bracket additionally which is sold out at their warehouse. Anyhow, the GTX 1650 is very interesting, I can play most games on 1080 on medium to low (since I downclocked it to try to keep it below 75 watts. I wish I could find a way to turn on the power limit feature so I could force the GPU to stay below 30-35 watts.

When I have more time, I will benchmark some games low power + max power mode. I might even liquid metal is when I get really bored. Will keep you guys updated.

*********

18 Days after purchase.

More complaints and possible fixes, Disclaimer!!!! Doing what I did to my laptop will void your warranty and may also brick your device, I am not responsible if you broke your laptop doing what I did.

Liquid metal: After removing the heat sink and repasting with liquid metal, I found out that this laptop is not suited for liquid metal. Lenovo placed a bunch of thermal pads on the heat sink that prevents good contact for the cpu and heat sink. after 1 applications, cpu was thermal throttling. I tried putting a thicker layer of liquid metal and it still didn't work. I then removed the liquid metal and replaced with regular thermal paste called noctua nt-h1. I did see my cinebench 15 score go from 1100ish to 1200ish so it did make some improvements.

TLDR; Don't liquid metal this laptop, thermal pads too thick.

Adding a HDD: This will be one of the main reasons why I will not buy another Lenovo laptop. Before I received my laptop, the Lenovo technician ensured me that my laptop came with the HDD connector and a HDD chassis. After recieving the laptop I found out it didn't. If you bought the version with the SSD, it doesn't come with the HDD connector/chassis. So, ok I tired ordering the HDD connector/chassis. Lenovo doesn't have/supply them. So they sent me to encompassdotcom. Encompass has the product on their site but no stock, backordered with no eta. Then I tried finding 3rd party version with no luck (the product is too new, not popular enough yet). After speaking and being transferred from sales/techincal support and technician, contacting them through online chat, emails and phone calls. This is where most people would simply give up and or return the laptop. I choose to see if I could improvise. A HUGE DISCLAIMER, this could have fried my motherboard/ hdd connector slot. Don't this unless you want risk your system. After doing a lot of research, I found that the HDD connector for the Lenovo y700 was similar looking compared to the one for the Lenovo L340. Both connector had 10 pins and using the few photos I could find of the L340 connector, I calculated that the connector was about the same size. The connector came in today and I tried it. The ribbon was way too long and the connector didn't quite have the same lock but I was suprised that it actually worked! I was lucky nothing fried. I tidied up the ribbon but everything seem to work fine. Problem solved! and I can finally store more things on this laptop.

TLDR; Lenovo doesn't supply simply parts for their laptop, finding parts were a nightmare and their customer service will send you to limbo for help, found a work around.

---------------------------------------

24 days after owning the laptop and new bios update and installed lenovo vantage because I wanted to use Conservation mode which allow you to keep the laptop's battery healthy. Found out I was getting a lot worst cinebench scores 1050-1100 after all the updates. Throttlestop also showing PL2 warning/throttling which was strange. Checking Throttlestop during benchmarks is also showing cpu only using around 45w instead around 60w like before. I thought I was running into thermal problems, so I then open up the laptop to see if the thermal paste was good. I then tried to use liquid metal again but this time only on the CPU and not GPU. I didn't need to put electrical tape around the GPU die and without it must have helped with limiting space between the CPU and it's heat sink. After doing some tests, the cpu runs cool around 40 ambient (in an air conditioned room). Still, the CPU would power throttle for some reason. Even when the cpu temperatures never went above 75-80 degrees. It turns out it was software "lenovo vantage" I don't know why but this software power throttling hard on my cpu. The software forces the cpu to run at 45w no matter if you cpu is no where near the thermal limit. Now my computer is getting cinebench 15 scores about 1200+ again (1289 highest so far.) Also because of the liquid metal, the cpu runs cooler during benchmarks.

TLDR, Don't install Lenovo vantage if you want maximum performance because the software will power throttle your cpu. Manage to get liquid metal to work, take precautions. The CPU runs cooler now.

---------------------------------------

This might be my final update. I've now owned the laptop for over 3 months. I've traveled with it on long flights and also tested it in my regular daily life. I like the size and how discrete the laptop looks. I am very pleased with the battery, it lasts surprising long compared to my older gaming laptops. I finally received the hdd bracket/cable from lenovo. Not really satisfied that it look 3 months. Feel ripped off paying $10 for a bit of tin foil and metal that didn't even come with the screws. Anyhow, I really happy with the performance for the price of the laptop. However, the build is plastic so can feel a bit cheap. I've already started looking at monitor panels for fun.

Thanks for reading, everyone.

ssd only vs better graphic card?

Going to buy a new laptop soon which will mainly be used for games. Have two laptops I'm deciding between one with 2 ssd drives and a nvidia gtx 1060 and the other one with one ssd and one hdd but with a nvidia rtx 2060. how big a difference does having games and stuff on an ssd rather than an hdd make and how much better is the graphic card? would love other benifits and negatives about both choices.

Dell latitude E5540 not powering on

My friend and I just picked up about 40-50 laptops from a guy for $100. Among them is a Dell latitude E5540 that won't power on. It doesn't have a battery, but I did put in ram to test it. It claims there's a battery issue so I ordered a new one, but I'm not sure if that's what it is. I know some computers boot without batteries, so I'm taking a gamble I'd love some opinions, thanks

Can't factory reset laptop w/ broken screen even if connected to TV.

So I bought my ex a laptop at one point about 4 years ago. She broke the screen on it within 2 months and so it's pretty much in new condition besides the screen.

Now I'm trying to use it and I can't gain access into it because it was password protected.

I connected it to my TV via HDMI and was able to see the login screen and from there I tried to select the factory reset option.

The issue is, for some reason that switched off the HDMI output and now there is no way to view the screen. The HDMI port will no longer send a signal to the TV as long as it's in some stage of factory reset (which I can't complete without viewing the screen)

Any suggestions? I've tried a different TV... The laptop just refuses to use the HDMI output when it's in reset mode..... Now what....?

Should I reapply the thermal paste

So recently my mom spilled coke on her MacBook Air and I’ve been working on repairing it. Now before you just say don’t it does appear that it’s not completely ruined and just needs something replaced but I’m not sure what yet. She’s had the laptop for a few years but we did buy it refurbished from micro center so I would assume that they would have replaced the thermal paste if it needed it at the time but my worry is that the liquid might have dried it out. I do know enough about computers and I will do enough research in taking this one apart so that I don’t ruin the cpu or mother board if I do this but I can’t find any articles tellingly if liquid will effect the thermal paste.

Msi notebook opinions

Hi there, I want to start a small threat about notebooks from msi. I hear a lot of different opinions on their notebooks. Of course everyone can have their own opinion about brands but I ask you guys for an advice. Are their notebooks good and worth the price or do you think there are much better choices for around the same price? Do you own a msi notebook and what problems did you have? What are the downsides and what do you like about them? I'm a newbie in the notebook world so tell me about your experience with this brand! :)

Advice on Acer Predator Helios 300 (i7-8750H, 8 GB Ram, 128 GB SSD + 1 TB HDD)

I am buying this laptop for a very specific purpose - music production (primarily, running Ableton Live). It's the best thing I can afford and I wanted to know how it has been performing in terms of build quality and heating issues.

I don't have much use of the GPU but I do require the CPU to be able to handle most of what I throw (will extend RAM if required).

So, any thoughts / opinions / advice?
