If anyone is in bookings, my band will be in Iowa for the next yr! We're down to go into other bordering states as well! Thank you all! We are loving iowa so far (even though tornados are scary 😅)
I lost my uncle in the late 80s to the Shiloh community/cult. It's been a while since I've looked up the community, and was somewhat shocked (but also not) today to find it dissolved. Can anyone give me info on what happened, what happened to the people living there, any info in general? There isn't a lot of indepth information online.
I have never chopped down a tree and I would like to change that. I can’t do clean up just the chopping down part
I recently tried to take the BRC course to get a motorcycle endorsement on my license, but I can be a bit slow sometimes and the classroom setting was just not helpful. Once I get the hang of stuff, I pick it up really easily but I can be pretty braindead with getting basics down and stuff (I have high functioning autism which is also indicated on my license). During the course, it felt like with every exercise, as soon as something would almost start to sink in, we would move on to the next thing. I didn't feel confident about passing the course, and frankly, given my (lack of) progress, didn't feel it would have been safe if I somehow did pass. Ultimately, I decided not to even complete the entire weekend course as I didn't feel going further on in the class would benefit myself or others in the course.
Instead, I decided it would be better to take the small bits of information I'd gained from the course, get a permit, and try to reach out to local riders who might be willing to help me get started. Once I've actually gotten a feel for what I need to do, I'd like to go back and try the BRC course a second time probably to get the actual endorsement. In the meantime, I've just signed on a bike and gotten it insured, and am wondering if anyone here can or can connect me with local riders for this sort of thing? I'm a student at ISU and live in the campus area.
As a side note, the autism thing means I can be a bit awkward or quiet, especially when I don't know people very well, and that I usually wear earplugs and such. It doesn't impair my driving at all, and I don't expect (or want) anyone I get the chance to ride with to "babysit" me or anything like that because of it. I might ask some really stupid questions every once in a while, but I'm independent and live on my own.
just curious lol
I'll be moving to Iowa in early June because I got a new position in the state. I'll be working in Charles City, but don't really want to live there because it's a really small town and I don't really think that's my thing. I'm 23 and looking for a more vibrant and lively city with people my age and more things to do. Because of this, I've been looking at Cedar Falls and Waverly, but honestly, based on the pictures of the majority of the apartments I've seen in those two cities, they all seem very old, run down, not well taken care of, and not "modern." The nicest apartments I've seen have been in New Hampton, but that also seems like a small city without much to do and it's definitely not my first choice of places to live. Does anybody know any apartment complexes that are relatively new or more "modern" looking and well taken care of in either Cedar Falls or Waverly?
Edit: availability of decently good internet is important to me
Edit 2: for pricing considerations, my salary is 70k
Why do I always owe Iowa money at the end of the year? What I am doing wrong? I don’t have kids and I don’t farm. I am a homeowner. Why can’t we just be even?
Bought our house last October knowing the roof would eventually need to replacing, but now we’ve had 2 roof leaks in the last 2 months with all the rain we’ve been getting. If anyone has any recs it would be great appreciated.
Thought this was a great shot on a morning drive up to the Driftless. It was a fantastic drive in and out of the fog with the sunrise.

“Playing politics with public safety never helps public safety," Marshalltown Chief of Police Michael W. Tupper said of SF 2340, which is opposed by immigrant rights advocates and law enforcement alike. "This law has severely harmed community relationships that took decades to build.”

Hi everyone,
I am here to recommend my apartment building in Johnston because it is often overlooked and there are several apartments available right now. It is located on NW 62nd Ave in a line of stand-alone buildings that don't have the best reputation, however, they are all owned by different individuals and NOT by one person, which I think many assume, and so that's why it gets passed up. Also, the surrounding neighborhoods are very safe and rather ritsy townhomes and such. The number is 4837, and all the buildings look very similar.
The reason why I am making a post is to let people know that this particular apartment building is safe, affordable, and well-managed. I wouldn't really advise the surrounding buildings.
A bit about the location:
There are 7 apartments, all 2-bedroom 1 bathroom. 4 at 1 1/2 story, and 3 lower level (not complete basement because there are windows). Our landlord (unnamed for privacy) revamps every apartment when someone leaves. We just had new carpet installed in the hallways. Apartments are carpeted and tile in the kitchen/bathroom. Windows in each room. The outside doors are locked for added safety and we haven't had any problems with feeling unsafe.
The rent is super affordable compared to other places in Johnston. It's $675 and includes all utilities except electricity (air conditioning). Pets are allowed. A communal laundry is available for $2.50/load and we don't really have problems with it being in use or anything. Saves a ton of time not having to go somewhere else. And there is a storage locker in the laundry room for each apartment.
All the tenants are quiet, respectful people and we're looking for more of the same. We don't like super loud/noisy/crazy people and everyone keeps to themselves.
The landlord is hands down the best you will ever find. He is always available, comes immediately when something is wrong, and is just overall a really nice guy who loves to help and take care of his place. In fact, he is such a great person that we invited him to our wedding! He has even helped us out with extra things and is always around working on something to improve the place.
We're 5 minutes away from Hyvee and Fairway, parks, walking trails, restaurants, right in the middle of Johnston, really. We're pretty much 10mins from any place we'd need to go.
I hope this post will help clear up some assumptions around the area. I would be happy to talk in more detail with anyone who is interested.
You can see the apartment building here: https://www.forrent.com/ia/johnston/4837-nw-62nd-ave/xsjv41q but note that the interior pictures are outdated, but you get a general idea.
