Security on Campus

Hello, fellow students! I'm looking at moving into a house next year with my flatmates. One problem is that we are all girls, so we are worried about our security/safety. We have been looking into getting a camera doorbell to put outside our front door for the time being - I have looked at the Ring one, but apparently, you have to pay a fee to keep the footage, which we won't be able to afford. I have also come across the Eufy Video Doorbell. Does anyone else have security outside their accommodation, or is it just us being paranoid?

Party scene?

I’m transferring here in the fall and am used to going out to parties on the weekends. I’m not expecting to get into a party my first week there but was wondering how exclusive the parties get?

Project Help

Hi,

I had to create a social media site and website for my digital media class with the point being to teach us how to interact with people through social media, I created a food blog. As the end of the semester approaches I need 100 followers to get a good grade, I will of course follow you back and then after the end of the semester IDC if you want to unfollow lol. The Instagram link is https://www.instagram.com/eatsandbeats101/ or just EatsandBeats101 on Instagram!

Id' really appreciate any help on this, Thank you!!!

Quality of Professors and Curriculum in McCollum Sci Hall?

Anyone feel like the professors treat students like a bother? I'm feeling absolutely hated by the profs in McCollum. Their lectures are all the same "flipped" classroom experience and I have noone to get decent feedback on content with. I go during office hours and it's like talking to a wall where they check their watch or clock and I get barebones answers over 5 practice questions.

It just feels like their's a lack of analogies, energy, inspiration, and discussion.

I don't know if the other schools (Business, Art, etc.) are the same way but I'm feeling just burned out, uninspired, and that they're questioning why I'm even doing the bio/biochem major every time I come in during office hours.

Just need to vent, let me know what you think ig.

Uhh... I have a question.

So I'm interested in studying paleontology, and I'm told that if one wishes to study paleontology in Iowa, UNI is among the best places to do it. But I looked online and the only mention of paleontology on the website is the museum. If anybody is willing to give me some advice and direction on what I should do and how, it would mean the world. Thanks in advance!

thinking about accepting my offer

hello! ive been accepted and want to plan a visit and everything to start the process of committing myself BUT i’m really nervous if this school is what i’m looking for. i want lively and diverse with tons of ways to meet new people. i’m coming from a town some hours away and don’t have a lot of people coming with me. i’ve heard the criminal justice and criminology programs are amazing so i’m not worried about academics. if i want fun parties and new inviting people: is this the right place? is there fun things for an 18 year old to really enjoy?

Question about RA housing.

Hi, I'm thinking about transferring to UNI next year and I know that some colleges will give you some sort of free housing for being an RA (Resident Assistant.) At UNI, do RA's have to live in specific housing? (Example: RA works at Dancer, thus gets put in single dorm in Dancer.) Iowa State has a full description about how their RA's get free housing and get paid a certain amount 4 times a semester. I couldn't find anything for UNI though. Any info would be appreciated!

Weirdest thing - a student asked me where to go study after 8 PM on a Friday night. I don't know!

Cup of Joe has music and closes at 9. The other coffee shops in town close earlier. Rod Library closes at 6 or some shit. What the hell, man? If you are under bar age and don't want to sit at Village Inn - where are the late night study spots? This is a college campus. What am I missing?

Freshman

Hi,

I'm going to be a freshman this year and I was never really involved with anything while in highschool so I was wondering what clubs are available or where I would go to find any.

What your professors are thinking

Here's one difference I found being a UNI prof vs. my previous institutions:

We are rooting for you.

At other institutions I've taught at (three big 10 schools) profs tended not to care, or cared a bit, but weren't actively rooting for you to succeed. I've been at committee meetings where we've talked about a failing student for 30 minutes, figuring out how under university rules they can get off suspension and get their degree.

Not only have I and other profs here spent hours helping struggling students in our classes (that's been true for lots of places I've been) but I and other profs have taught special courses, without being paid for it, just for one student who needs the credits to graduate.

Obviously this isn't true for every prof here, and I can't say I know all of them. But there is a culture of rooting for our students, feeling protective of our students, and rejoicing with each other as we share articles about successful people that are UNI alumni.

The semester is about to start. All your profs are in their offices now, or working from home, getting ready for you to come back. And we want you to succeed. Buy a nice pen or notebook, or good luck charm for your keychain, finish up your souvenirs from your road trip to Galena, and know that we are looking forward to seeing you again.

P.S. Yes, this means if you see your prof at a restaurant or grocery store, absolutely come and say hi and introduce us to your parents or friends.

weekend life

Considering Northern Iowa for undergrad. Visited and loved the campus but nervous because I'm not from Iowa and a few websites described UNI as a suitcase school. Does anyone have experience as a freshman or undergrad on campus? Will it clear out until Monday? Is UNI more or less fun on weekends than other places?

Any help would be appreciated!

Hidden gems/best websites/stores for UNI merchandise?

Outside of the bookstore and Amazon, are there some good websites out there that have licensed with UNI? Wouldn't mind getting some Panther gear ready for football season this year. TIA
