Description
Cascadia is the place we live. It is also a social movement to empower individuals and communities to be active around issues they care about to better the Pacific Northwest. It is also a positive vision, built around shared principles and values that each of us can be working towards, to create a bioregion that is resilient, vibrant and autonomous.
If you'd like to host a Cascadia meetup create a post, or message a mod and we'll get it added here.

The West Coast all pay more into taxes than we receive in subsidies or payments from the federal government. Those federal government payments are already in Jeopardy because of their stance on Equity.
If we're paying money and they're taking apart the things that we get back, then they want to dictate how our medical care and culture and immigration function, what are we getting out of this?
Lets say among these hard times that Cascadia successfully breaks away. What happens in terms of a government or overall formation of a organization to lead it? And what type of government would be leading Cascadia?
- This is a genuine question.
Ever since November there has been a steady rise of new members on the subreddit. I see a lot of questions being asked, as well as misunderstandings about what Cascadia means.
Could we get some links or general information in a pinned post or something along those lines for all the people who want to learn? Overall I am happy seeing so many new people interested and this sub gaining more popularity :) 🍻
Within the current United States there is an allowance of variation from the states in how they are governed. Some good examples being how Louisiana’s legal system is based on French common law instead of British Common Law, or how Kentucky and Virginia are commonwealths. We could attempt to change our state governments into being Parliamentary states as a great way to both somewhat unify with BC and make ourselves more alien to the rest of the US.
I see it functioning as every county has its representatives to state parliament based on party membership who then elect the governor in a similar method as a nation would its prime minister. With methods for the population to vote for parliament to evict the senators, House reps and governors out of power regardless of term to have a new election. At least in simple terms. And if secession happens I believe more of us would be happier with a parliamentary system and this kickstarts our exposure to such a system, and it would be a great way to show those in the east of our states that they would be treated more fairly and be better represented by staying with the west. And if it doesn’t it may encourage more states to transition and we may trend towards a more stable republic. (As parliamentary systems tend to be)
What are your thoughts on this idea?
What if, instead of aiming for political secsession, we aim for supercession (building something new on top of what we already have)
We can start by building interprovincial, interstate, and international communities with the purpose of building solidarity and spreading the ethics of bioregionalism. Soft power instead of hard power.
The way I see it, there's nothing stopping us from creating the framework of what we want Casscadia to be on top of pre-existing forms of governments. The future of our political landscape seems increasingly uncertain, so who knows- but why not extend our hands across borders and start now?
I'm thinking just beginning community enthusiasts groups that also do social and climate activism. Who knows- maybe we can organize a Cascadian conference in a few years? 🌲
Hello, I'm new here, and new to this whole Cascadia thing. I don't live in a location that's typically considered part of the region, but I've always appreciated the area and when I learned about the 'Cascadia Movement' I thought it made more sense than present borders. At the very least its a nice way to appreciate the area for what it really is rather than what our current borders make it out to be
Of course I've noticed that the proposed boundaries of the region vary a bit. I understand that Bioregionalism is mostly defined by geology, ecology, and culture. With that in mind, I have some ideas specifically about the area that I do actually live in and how it pertains to Cascadia. That being Southern Idaho
Idaho's inclusion (or parts of it) in Cascadia varies. I'm making the case that at least Southern Idaho should be excluded from the bioregion
In terms of the natural world, Southern Idaho is characterized by the Snake River Plain, which basically consists of miles upon miles of sage-brush and lava rock. Very few mountains or forests like our enviable friends to the North or the East or the Far West. North of the SRP does have those features, but is more similar to Montana's wilderness than it is to Washington's. There's no fucking moss here!
In terms of culture, it is characterized by the LDS/Mormon presence, which is of course far-right politically. This area is more similar (both naturally and especially culturally) to the Salt Lake Basin than it is to anything West of the Oregon High Desert
The Oregon High Desert however, is also very similar to the Snake River Plain naturally (as far as I can tell) and also has enough far-right presence to spark the Greater Idaho Movement in that area. So I would even extend my proposition to exclude South Idaho from the Cascadia bioregion to also apply to Eastern Oregon, but the Snake River Plain is especially unfitting for the region in my opinion
In conclusion, as a resident of Southern Idaho, I tell you - do not include the Snake River Plain in your bioregion. You don't want us. It sucks over here. That is all
Does anyone else refer to themselves as cascadian? I've found myself using the term in recent times to describe myself. Even though I've never been there. Especially after the election. I don't like being called an American.
Many parts of Cascadia are deeply conservative. How do you imagine dealing with that fact? In Oregon and Washington, for example, around 40% of people voted for Trump. Not every conservative voted for Trump, but presumably not a single Progressive did. Nevertheless, this sub treats Cascadia as if it will be a perfect Progressive nation.
How would you propose to deal with conservatives in Cascadia? Would you just draw a map that excludes the conservative areas? Would you draw a map that makes sure they don't have political power? What if they wanted to break away from the cities of Cascadia and opt for self rule?
New here, but I dream of a Cascadia Constitution written with full participation of tribal leadership at every stage
The world uses metric and Cascadians should as well. This is virtually inarguable.
I suggest we make a strong push to make that change right now, and I know that's going to sound like something that ought to be way farther down the priority list right now. I think now's perfect.
First, it makes international travel easier for every one of our citizens. Don't need to elaborate on that, I think.
Second, it sends a meaningful pro-science and pro-international community message -- one that implicitly rejects American exceptionalism.
Thirdly, and really my reason for pushing this now: it's exactly my preferred form of petty resistance against the US right wing. It will make our region feel like another country to them, one that's alien and separate. I want Cascadia to be a place that's confounding to that group.
To accomplish this there are two actions I ask of you, both simple to do. 1) CHANGE YOUR PHONE AND ELECTRONICS TO METRIC. That's pretty easy, won't take long, and within a few months you'll be thinking in it. 1b) Get your friends to do the same. 2) MAKE THE CASE FOR THIS CHANGE IN EXISTING LOCAL AND STATE GOVERNMENT. This can be as easy as a phone call, skeet, or email. Do whatever you're comfortable doing. Once bills are drafted, support them.
Cheers all!
Hey everyone,
I'm just checking in with all my Cascadian brothers, sisters, and all kindred spirits in between. Hope you're all thriving and grounded in the beauty of this region!
The first week of Donald Trump has been nothing but a shock to the soul. If his funding freezes hold, we are undoubtedly facing an economic disaster on a scale the North American continent has never before experienced. Shoot, no one in the world has experienced anything like what might happen! How many millennia would we have to go back in time for a similar event? The Dark Ages?
I honestly don't believe Trump's funding freezes will hold. Instead, this is a test to see how much we can tolerate. Donald and his administration will try something else, for sure, if this tactic doesn't go through. So, what's our plan? What can we coordinate? How do we take care of each other? I recently joined Saturn Barter, a barter network out of Tacoma, Washington. That seems to be working great. Any other ideas?
I was a huge advocate for cascadia. I am a transwoman I saw a glimmer of hope in cascadia to provide safe refuge for Trans people. I was just told that advocating for such a thing is a form of settler colonialism. I don't want to hurt anyone. I don't want to violate anyone's rights. The last little bit of hope I had is gone.
It's over. I'm not accepted anywhere.
California has already begun to draft documents to start gaining signatures to try and break away. We can too!! Call, email, dm, mail your state/local representative your left shoe and tell them we want the same thing..I know it's a long road but it's possible..https://www.sos.ca.gov/administration/news-releases-and-advisories/2025-news-releases-and-advisories/Proposed-Initiative-Enters-Circulation-Requires-Future-Vote-on-Whether-California-Should-Become-Independent-Country
I keep seeing comments on popular posts reminding people this is not a secessionist movement. However, I bet if we polled members, most would view it as such and want it to be viewed as such. If we as a bioregion take the west coast including BC and CA, we would be one of the most powerful nations in the world. We would also be more human rights and environmentally based than DC currently is. We have far more in common with each other than the rest of the country. Food for thought.
Does anyone know why the white color represents in the flag? Silver seems more in tune with the regional colors due to all of the rain.
Does anyone know vexillology that could explain the symbolism behind the colors and whether silver is even acceptable for flags?
Or the Okanagan in general? I know some maps include BC up to the Rockies, but the climate is SO different between here and Vancouver, It’s hard to see how they can share a bioregion. We get around 12-15 inches of precipitation per year (less, lately) as opposed to 60 in downtown Vancouver (somewhat less at the airport).
I’d SOOOO much rather be a Cascadian than ever submit to a certain president’s threat to make Canada the 51st state 😡
I've heard about White Supremacist groups trying to establish Cascadia, is that all there is or is there a general mix of ideologies trying to achieve autonomy for the region? i.e. Socialist, or Anarchist groups. I've seen posts in this sub reddit that indicate a disdain for fascists and White supremacists, so tell me about the ideological makeup of the Cascadia movement.
Saw this on Bluesky and wanted to signal boost:
"Washington State friends: There’s a bill proposed to outlaw gender affirming care for minors in Washington. It's currently open for public comment. Please go add your voice. app.leg.wa.gov/pbc/bill/1038 "
(posted by vixyish.bsky.social )
Bill summary is here: https://app.leg.wa.gov/billsummary?billnumber=1038&year=2025
While I can't force everyone to comment they way I want, I hope that my fellow Washingtonians support trans children's right to gender affirming care.
as I understand, a lot of Cascadian advocates are also believers in anarchism (I don't know if I'd consider myself an anarchist but I'm very sympathetic to anarchist arguments), but the thing I'm confused about is how you could be both? I thought that anarchism had a more or less global goal and I'm not entirely sure how a Cascadian Identity is compatible since anarchism calls for the abolition of the nation state.
Listen to the creator of the flag in their own words. Cascadia is NOT a secessionist movement to create a new nation state. It is a bioregionalist movement that is anticapitalist and decolonial that is more closely related to green anarchism. Bioregionalism as an ideology was borne from Peter Berg's experiences with the back to the land and counter culture movements of the '60's and '70's. The specific definition of "secession" commonly used involves the separation of one nation state into two or more - but no good can come from any nation state, as they all rely on capitalism, slavery, industrialism, and militarism to exist, and are therefore in conflict with the bioregion. Some of the recent california state secessionist movements have been run by FSB agents, we need to make it very clear that the enemy of our enemy is NOT our friend - all states are oppressors.
For all the people riled up about the current fascist in office (they've all been fascists), there are plenty of things you can do to begin pursuing reinhabitation. Many movements have had success building dual power, and that is what the creator of the flag recommends. Learning the local history of your area, from the geologic time scale, to early human habitation, Indigenous history, colonization, and contemporary is vital to understand how we got here. Learn about the native flora and fauna, as well as invasive and non-native species. Grow food and get as much food, fiber, fuel, and medicine from local sources like farmers markets. Join a local mutual aid organization like Food not Bombs. Get involved with the grange network and watershed councils. Have solidarity with all oppressed people, stand shoulder to shoulder with our trans siblings, disabled friends, BIPOC neighbors, anyone the state is looking to oppress.

This isn't intended to be super deep (the post, not the question).
I see this pop up all the time and, thankfully, I observe that most people are reasonable, and observe actual succession is almost entirely impossible, certainly in our lifetimes.
But even as a self-identified skeptic (although enthusiastic!), I can see a world in the not so distance future that changes (state) borders to more closely align / coexist with environmental features, so that people feel like they're better represented.
So, how do you best support this movement we all care about, to different degrees?
Fly, the, flag. While "the Pacific Northwest" is a phrase that, (very) charitably, may be recognized around the world, Cascadia is known even less so. But we are living in a time where our identity and culture are still blooming, forming.
I think it's safe to say we all care a lot, about being good stewards of the land, recognizing basic facts about human rights, and trying our best to steer the world towards better. And I love that. But how do we be known?
Fly, that, flag. We should see a whole lot more of it, than we really do right now. Myself included.
