Welcome to r/Tacoma, The Subreddit of Destiny. Much like the city, this forum is a dusty old jewel of Puget Sound.
Some spend all day talking about how gritty it is, others simply think this is where trucks were invented, but Tacoma is a beautiful city filled with art, food, beer, music, nature and people. This subreddit is intended to be a reflection of such.
Welcome! You'll Like Tacoma.
Please make sure your post follows the subreddit rules.

Has anyone noticed this lately? I’ve seen so many more police out…just chilling on the side of the road, in traffic circles, on the shoulder of freeways, and just so many more people pulled over…
I’ve lived in Tacoma for 4 years now, and to me it’s quite noticeable the difference. Anyone else notice this?
I joined LA Fitness because I wanted to use the pool but almost every time I go I have to leave because there's too many people in there. It's really frustrating because it feels like I'm paying for nothing. Does anyone have any other options they can give me? It doesn't have to be a full gym, but is there a place with just a pool that I can use for lap swimming?
Looking for real good Chinese and Mexican restaurants. Preferred South Tacoma area.
I witnessed the most awkward and uncomfortable exchange between the old guy sitting at the very front and the oboe player, and I have to talk to someone about it; it wasn’t like off to the side or anything, he was putting her on blast in front of the entire audience and I’ve never seen anything like it.
My teen has started babysitting, and he is interested in taking a basic first aid class. I periodically see them come across my feed with free or cheap classes offered by Tacoma Fire, at the community center, etc. Of course, the instant I go looking, I cannot seem to find any. Does anyone know of any upcoming classes?
Does anyone know if protests are being planned for the area around the new tariffs?
Yep, yet another food post. I apologize in advance, but I did try searching first, and this particular niche appears to be unfilled.
Up in Burien is, in my opinion, the best Mexican breakfast spot around, Kikeys. Now that I'm down in Tacomaland, I'd like to find a stand-in.
Edit to add: I believe all roles have been filled, but please keep privately reaching out, I'm meeting cool people :)

My apologies I cannot make this succinct.
I'm a full time, hobbyist Bbq'er of many many years. I watch hours of cooking videos daily from around the world. I built a dedicated gazebo, have a half dozen grills and smokers, plus change them out occasionally just for fun. I'm as deep into bbq'ing as a hobby as a man can be. I've had the time, the equipment, the assets, and the desire to continually get better for many years now. I quite simply do incredible food and take pride in it.
I'm looking to host a new foodie dinner club where the food is the entire purpose of the get together. I will prepare the proteins/sides and during the course of the meal I will explain the history, preparation, and my take on the main course and side. Leftovers typically provided.
I'd like to invite someone (and a +1), who is as deeply down the pastry chef rabbit hole as I am in bbq. Someone responsible for bringing both bread for the meal (perhaps a smear as well?) and a dessert for after. Who over the course of dessert would explain their choice, it's history, preparation, and their take on it. Extra desserts for each person expected ;)
I'd like to invite someone (+1), as deeply down the Sommelier rabbit hole as I am in bbq. Someone responsible for bringing the alcohol (e.g. Wine, scotch, beer, or combination). Two drinks per person, one given during the meal and one during dessert. More is always welcomed. Who, over the course of dinner, would explain their choice, it's history, preparation, and their take on it.
Anyone interested in being the Pastry Chef or Sommelier? If so please let me know how far down, and which rabbit hole you're in. Maybe what your cellar or baking area looks like and what a favorite pairing or two is.
By bad example: I don't need to know if you change from a Shiraz to a Grenache because I went from rice to fire roasted Brussel Sprouts but I would like to learn that you know more than just a bold red with heavy tannins because I'm doing smoked oxtails... If that makes any sense.
This is about food, not people, so your age, race, sex, gender, etc do not matter to me at all. You just need to want to try the best dinner around. I reserve the right to punch nazis in the face, but otherwise we good.
Comment in a reply if you're comfortable with that, or feel free to pm me.
Ps, throw away account, because I don't want to upset my current friends (you'll still be invited to my friend's dinners) and reddit's got some weirdos that I can just ghost if I need to with this account :)
This is what I woke up to this morning. By no means am I worried about the snow. I’m more worried that there’s black ice that has happened/most likely to happen as temps are dropping below freezing at night.
I value a mayor who leads with transparency, accountability, and a clear vision for economic growth. Someone who keeps people informed, engages with the community, and makes it easy to understand what they stand for.
That’s not the experience I’ve had here. Mayor Woodards** doesn’t seem particularly active on social media or interested in direct engagement. It’s a stark contrast to my last city, where the mayor kept residents in the loop—whether it was public safety updates, development plans, or just sharing his vision for the future. You always knew where he stood.
Here, I have no real sense of what she’s accomplished or where she’s taking the city. Maybe that’s on me—I haven’t been here long—but if I’m being honest, I don’t know if I’ll vote for her in the next election. Not because I dislike her, but because I have no idea what she’s doing or what she’s done.
Curious what others think.
Do you think she’s doing a good job? Why or why not?
Hey Tacoma, my wife and I recently bought a house and have had nothing but headaches. Agreed upon work not being done correctly, inspection company not catching what seems to be obvious issues, and warranty not covering for seemingly bs reasons. I need a bulldog, who y’all got?
Please feel free to add others so we can find them..
Looking for a recommendation to pick a high school for my daughter.
Does anyone know why south Orchard street near Emerson is so backed up? There's a huge line of cars honking and revving their engines.
Just tried to go to Costco and every entrance is backed up. Even the back entrance that we typically use every weekend without issue. We couldn't get in the parking lot so we ended up leaving. Never had to do that before.
Is this related to the tariffs? Are people trying to stock up to save money? I'm trying to understand why it's like this.
Hi there. I’m a 36 y/o male. I play guitar and I just started taking vocal lessons. I love writing songs. Looking for other musicians in the area who would be interested in getting together to jam. The end goal would ideally be to form a band and play shows, but one step at a time. I like most styles of music but what I’m most interested in playing would be some kind of rock, alt or blues rock are my favorites. HMU if you’re interested or have any questions for me

Naturally, because the city council cut funding to the entire system, it'll be closed Sunday and Monday, as all TPL branches are, sigh. So today's the day if you wanna check it out this weekend.
Any update? Are they opening soon?
Hello everyone! I’m looking for events happening this Saturday, preferably starting after 8pm.
I am a local so I know all the regulars like McMenamins, Jazz bones, and Steel Creek. But was wondering if there was anything happening this weekend?

We have a website, but it was flagged for a rule violation.
Last Wednesday, the City Council passed a resolution declaring entheogen-related activities (i.e. magic mushrooms) amongst the lowest law enforcement priority in Tacoma.
Of course, psychedelic mushrooms are still illegal under both state and federal law. So you can still be arrested by the Pierce County Sheriff, WSP, DEA, and FBI for possessing/distribution. But Tacoma PD is ordered to look the other way.

Where can someone who used to play find a good indoors wood floor with good hoops? Like an actual decent court open to the public (open to paying or a membership possibly). Just missing that squeaky wood floor, it’s winter, yeah.
There’s no easy way to say this, so... Starting tomorrow, Jan. 31, and for the next few months, the westbound I-90 off-ramp to SR 18/Snoqualmie Parkway (Exit 25) will be squeezed down to just one lane while crews install a culvert for future improvements.
The ramp will be closed from 9 p.m. tonight (Jan. 30) to 5 a.m., Jan. 31, to set barriers and stripe the road—so be sure to follow detours during that time.
We know traffic at this exit is already a pain, and this change will likely add to those delays until we shift to the new diverging diamond traffic pattern later this year. But hang in there! We’re working on making this interchange better for everyone in the long run. We ask for your patience—give yourself extra time, consider alternate routes and be kind to fellow drivers. Most importantly, keep an eye out for our crews so they can do their jobs safely. Had it for the first time in November… a week before they closed :( I was devastated when I found out they were shutting down! Anyone have a good adjacent recommendation? Craving that delicious authentic chicken shwarma with extra tzatziki 😭😭🙏 TIA
