Or do some people just carry the Sawyer pouches as their only water container(s)? Pros/cons of doing the latter (besides not having to carry extra bottles)?
EDIT: I mean east to west
Hi everyone,
I am currently traveling Indonesia with my girlfriend and we are on the westcoast of Sumbawa trying to head east to Laboe Djamboe to swim with the whalesharks and Lakey Peak for surfing before heading further east and to Sumba.
I have found a lot of information that there are public buses in Sumbawa at least serving Bima, Sumbawa Besar or Dompu but I can not find any information on routes, providers or schedules.
Does anyone have experience traveling Sumbawa east to west by public transport?
Any help is appreciated and thank you so much!
I'm a UK resident planning a 4-month adventure through Southeast Asia. However, I've run into an issue regarding medical insurance for my trip. My current lease ends on the day I depart, so I won't have a fixed address in the UK during my travels.
I'm looking for a simple and affordable medical insurance plan that would cover me without a UK address while I'm abroad. My primary concern is having adequate medical coverage, as I don't necessarily need extensive protection against trip cancellations, lost luggage, or other travel-related issues.
Have any of you had experience finding medical insurance in a similar situation? I'd appreciate any recommendations or advice you could offer. Thank you all in advance for your help!
Since I was 12, I’ve wanted to travel the world.. I’ve always felt that I was born in the wrong country. And I’ve tried to express myself in different ways. Nothing has worked, so I’ve continued in the grind for the goal of traveling the world one day.
I lost sight of this goal until today… (i- m24) damn near 12 years later finally booked my first massive trip with my PREGNANT fiancé Switzerland. We have no itinerary. We have no plan. This is the craziest & most fucking insane send I’ve ever done in my life. Ever. Period!!!
(Side note - I am an avid traveler within the US) * as in have taken 20+ trips in the last year We depart in 2 days!
Apologies on this sporadic post but hey boys I’m fuckin HYPED!!!!
TDLR:
After a lot of thought, (not much🤣) i think the best course of action will be to stick to 2-3 countries max!
Talk soon
3 friends and I (all WMs in mid 20s) book to stay at the mdumbi backpackers in December, with all the recent news we were if it’s still safe to travel there. We are debating moving the trip to another location
Any thoughts from locals or people that are knowledgeable on the situation
Any help is greatly appreciated :)?
Hey fellow travelers and backpackers!
I’m planning a solo trip to Borneo in April 2025, staying for 2-3 weeks. My focus is on exploring the incredible wildlife, hiking, and immersing myself in the local culture and cuisine. Originally, I had my sights set on popular experiences like hiking Mount Kinabalu, but I’ve noticed that many of the well-known activities can be quite expensive.
Since I'm traveling on a budget, I’d love to hear your advice on how to make the most of Borneo without breaking the bank. Specifically, I’m interested in visiting places like the Danum Valley (staying in budget-friendly hostels or lodges), Gunung Mulu, and Bako National Park. Do you have any affordable recommendations for these areas?
Also, if you have any tips on hidden gems or less touristy spots where I can see plenty of wildlife and get a deeper understanding of Borneo’s people and culture, I’d be so grateful. How far in advance should I be planning and booking these experiences?
Thanks so much for your help and advice—looking forward to hearing your insights!
Cheers!
I am looking for a sleeping bag (down, synthetic) which is for just below 0 degress comfort temp and I don’t want to pay a lot. Do you have any recommendations?

Hi y’all! I’m trying to figure out the best itinerary/travel route for a 3 week long trip to South America. I wanted to stay in hostels, start in Colombia, stop in or pass through Ecuador and end in Peru. I know that’s a lot for only three weeks but I don’t know when I’ll get another chance to travel and want to make the most of it. I would like to start in Medellín and end in Peru in order to hike Machu Piccu. Also the best transportation options I would find in order to travel through these countries? I like art, history, architecture, hiking, outdoorsy activities, etc. so any recommendations for that or different cities/towns in those three countries would be nice as well!
I made this chart to help make my decision about which entry-level, budget 2-person tent I should get. To me, budget is under $200. Durability and fabric quality rankings were determined by ChatGPT after I gave it the material info.
From this list, I’m leaning towards the top two rows.
Question for you all: does anything on here not seem right OR is there anything else you think I should add to compare?
Is there a secret to using y shaped stakes on the nylon webbing loops on the corner of a tent? In the past I've just put them in at an extreme angle and hope they didn't xome out because they have no hook or head to hold onto the loops. The small string thats attached to the stake does not make it practical to tie to the loop. Any advice would be wonderful
Hello! This is a very rough itinerary for my two month back packing trip to SE Asia. Was wondering if anyone had any tips for different routes, stops or just travel in general?
I’ve left a lot of extra time for travel so keen on making stops around Indonesia or Cambodia too if it’s feasible.
Thanks so much!
Hey, I am trying to decide on a good 2P tent. I am 5'11, and I will mostly be going solo. I will mostly be doing 2-3 nights in Southern CA during spring, summer, and fall. It would be great if any of these could accommodate for my 5'0 girlfriend and possibly other conditions/regions. My options are:
X-Mid 2 Solid
MSR Hubba Hubba 2P
Copper Spur UL2
Nemo Hornet OSMO
What would you guys suggest, or do you recommend something else?
I'm thinking of going to either Thailand or Vietnam in July and August. I'll be traveling with my husband and 8yo son for 3 weeks then alone with my son for 3 weeks.
I've been to Thailand, Lao, Cambodia and Myanmar when my daughters were small (4-9 the first time, 3 different trips), so I'm used to SE Asia with kids and a backpack.
I'm wondering if I do an old favorites tour with my son (Thailand+either Laos or Cambodia) or try Vietnam (+Cambodia maybe)
What I liked about Thailand is the diversity of food, activities, nature. I usually traveled for a while inside the country then ended each trip with a week at the beach.
I'm mainly scared of what I hear about scammers in Vietnam and maybe missing the food and amazing beaches.
What do you all think?
Thanks in advance!
Hi, I am looking for flights around in Central America, especially to find a way to get to Managua, Nicaragua from Cancun.
Been searching to and from a lot of different destinations, but it seems to be difficult to find any good and cheap connections in general in CA.
How come they are so expensive and are there other ways to enter the country? I know there is bus routes, but arent they a hassle sometimes with border control ect?
Any tips on how to find good and cheap flight connections in CA in general?
So I have W reservations for Patagonia the first week of February and I want to go around South America in January/February/March in addition to the W.
I wanted to do the Huayhuash Trek but saw the I would be in Peru during the wrong season for it (it says the dry season is May-Sept).
I was wondering if this plan makes sense for the time period I would be in South America.
I plan on doing urban backpacking in addition to wilderness backpacking. Hiking wise I have hiked about 2,400 miles this year including Whitney and another 14,000ft mountain in Colorado so I’m probably in the best shape of my life.
I understand that this is a rough timeline and really my only constraint is the W permit and a wedding in April. I would like some opinions based on other people’s experiences of these countries during this time frame that I can consider while I’m doing research. For example should I just skip Peru since it’s the rainy season and just do it another trip. Thanks and just ask me a question if I forgot anything.
Hi everyone! I'm an American planning a grad trip with my roommate (both 21 year old females) to different spots in Europe, and could use some help on hostel recs or cheap accomodations. We are flexible and prefer social hostels but are definitely down for some chiller ones as well.
We are planning to start in Florence and then stop in Lake Como (would love suggestions on your fav areas), Nice, Paris and London. I have been to all of these places except Lake Como so I know some of these places are more a hostel vibe than others but willing to take any recs you may have!
Based on my research here's some ideas I have (so please let me know your thoughts/preferences):
I used to live in Paris and feel as if there are not great hostel options for there as I love the Chatalet/Le Marais areas but not many options in convenient locations.
Also, what's everyone's opinions on Cinque Terre vs. Lake Como?

Does anyone have any recommendations of 1-3 night backpacking trips that would be accessible during mid-march?
The closer to Paris the better but I'm down to go anywhere in France that has pubic transportation relatively close to the trail.
Thank you in advance!!
Hello!
I've been wanting to get into hiking and decided to spend the last 2 days doing research on what gear to get, the only thing I didn't decide on was a backpack, mostly because I wasn't sure what size I would need. any recommendations for a good backpack (under $150)? changes to the list or ways to save money would be greatly appreciated as this is my first time putting together anything like this. Thank you all for any help!
My sister is about to start traveling a bunch and I'd like to get her a new backpack for Christmas. I'd like to find something very rugged, good capacity since she'll likely only travel with a backpack and not super flashy.
When traveling I use a swissgear, I've had it for over 12 years and it still looks brand new. I was curious if I should just get her what I have or if this sub knows of something better
Hey guys, I am looking into doing the Colorado trail next summer and I’m wondering if anyone has good advice for planning meals. This will be my biggest trip yet and my first time needing to resupply food, are there any services out there to help me plan out how much food I’ll need for each section?
Hey backpackers! Planning a 10–14 day trek in Nepal and torn between the Manaslu Circuit and the Gokyo Valley Trek. I’d love to hear some pros and cons of each to help make the decision easier. Which would you recommend, and why? Any personal experiences or tips would be amazing! Thanks!
Hi everyone!
I'm planning a 10-day trip through southern Germany, a few cities in the Czech Republic, and Austria. I'll be staying in hostels, eating at fast-food places or preparing my own meals rather than dining in restaurants, visiting museums, doing some hikes, and maybe going to a bar for a few nights.
What do you think a daily budget would be for this?
P.S: Any recommendations of places to visit
Thanks in advance!
