Hostel in Budapest - end of may or July/august for a lot of people?

Hello there I’m considering a trip to Budapest and it should be at the end of the May but I’m afraid that the hostel would be quite empty

what is the best time based on your experiences to use hostel for accommodation when I don't want to feel alone? is the end of May still empty in Budapest and many students visitors are visiting during July August ?

thank you

Soaring Hostel Price in Dublin

Can someone recommend how to find reasonable price hostel/accomodation in Dublin. I will be heading to Dublin in last week of August and all hostels have increased the prices to 5x of original price. Any scope of getting stay for a week. Or any recommendations where students can stay at fair price ?

Three beds in London hostel from 8th to 11th of May

Hi everyone, I was supposed to go to London with two friends from 8th of 11th of May, but we had to cancel the trip. Our hostel has already been paid and we can't get a refund. If anyone is interested in taking over the booking, please let me know in private message to agree on the details.

Hostel hookups etiquette?

Hello all, I (32M) got dumped by my fiancée (30F) about a month ago, so once I got rid of the stress I booked a solo trip to one of the Scandinavian capitals for straight 4 days in order to sooth myself a bit.

I am a well-travelled person but this will be the first time ever I will stay in a hostel (booked a private cozy capsule). The hostel itself has has SPA, bathrooms, hangout/reading area. My primary goal is to explore this beautiful Scandinavian city but I also really wish to try h0oking up with a female traveler. However, I really do not know anything about the hostel etiquette or how the h0okups happens usually. I guess I missed that part of my youth due to my long-term relationships. Any hints and tips will be appreciated! I am not a person who visits night bars/brot*els abroad, so this is not an option for me.

I'm having trouble finding any hostels online in Toluca. Planning a trip to the area next month, and specifically am interested in hiking Nevado de Toluca. Any recommendations?

Idea for an app, I would like your opinion

I'd like to hear your opinion. I have an early-stage idea of creating a booking-style app for small hostels and guesthouses. The concept involves providing the app in exchange for accommodation, allowing them to use it indefinitely even after I leave. My intention, besides obtaining free stays, is to promote small accommodations by directing 100% of the reservation fees to them. In Brazil (my country), we have a system that easily allows transactions without a card, without any fees. For other countries, I would need to explore alternative options. Additionally, I would need to research about legal implications regarding taxes to assess the project's viability; currently, I lack this information.

What do you think of the idea? Does it have potential or is it too bad? Thanks for the help!

Staying with a minor

Hi! I (20) have planned a trip with my sister (16) to two different cities in central europe, staying at a shared bunk room in each, booked through hostelworld. I failed to notice that the rooms would be 18+ and don't know whether they will check her age. She is traveling with me the whole time and we will check in together, do I have to cancel and specifically find a hostel that will accept people under 18 or do I risk it and hope they won't check or notice?

"Proof of onward travel"

Thanks in advance for your replies. I'm a resident of California doing a road trip through California and a lot of hostels require not only that one's driver's license says that one resides outside the county (county, not country) but also that one has "proof of onward travel."

For all of these hostels, that shouldn't be a problem because I have the next hostel booked already on hostel world and I can show them that. However, for the last one it seems somewhat difficult because after that I'm just driving home.

What else can be proof of onward travel other than just going home?

In need of hostel advice

Basically, I’m going interrailing this summer w a group of friends who are 18/19 years old, except for me, I’m the only 17 year old. We booked all of our hostels a few weeks ago but only just realized that the one in Berlin (Pegasus hostel) says i have to be 18+ to be able to stay in their dorms. Does anyone have experience in being underage and staying in hostels in Berlin?

Snorers should not stay in shared rooms

I fully and entirely believe that if you know you snore loudly, you should not subject an entire room of strangers to a sleepless night because of it. You should either book a private room or take action to reduce your snoring to the lowest possible noise level. Hostels should start designating a room for snorers so they can all just stay in one shared room if they really want to. Otherwise one person is ruining the night of multiple other people who couldn’t have known they’d be forced to hear it all night long.

Tips for keeping laptop secure while using?

1st hostel user.

I'm wondering how people handle keeping their laptop secure. If I'm away, of course I'll be putting it in the locker.

I'm curious about leaving it a common area when you need to use the toilet or want to cook something. Do you pack it up before going away for a few minutes? Or do you leave it unattended? I'm more worried about it being out of my sight, e.g. charging in the room while using the toilet. etc.

Top bunk or lower bunk?

Staying in a dorm-style hostel for the 1st time.

Would you recommend the top bunk or the lower one? And why?

My own thoughts without experience: the top bunk.

These are only guesses; I've never even slept in a bunk bed before.

No dirt or anything to fall on you. You feel less "movement" from someone above (maybe?) Maybe a tiny bit more secure. You can leave your stuff on the bed and it will not be as accessible or obvious.

Banking app shows HostelWorld have taken £69. App still says I owe £76 when I arrive for a £89 booking.

I'm dumb when it comes to online banking but as the title says, my app shows that I've been charged. (I booked a few different things that day so dont the total balance).

Is this just like a holding fee or something? For some reason I dont think the £69 actually came out but as I mentioned I have no idea what the balance was at the time.

Sorry for the noon question. The transaction doesn't appear any different to my other ones.

hostel recommendation in Vienna

2 of my friends and I are going to Vienna this summer for a concert. I am of age but both of my friends will still be underage at that time. We're only going to be staying for one night. Does anyone have any recommendations, preferably close to the Gasometer venue?

Hostel recommendations for Nice France?

Heading to south of france late may and stopping in Nice for 4 nights. The hostel options in south of france are surprisingly limited. I'm considering Hostel Baccarat but its the cheapest one around so i'm a little wary of it but has some decent reviews. Anyone able to give any recommendations?

Trying to cancel a stay at a hostel but they want the full cost

I booked with a hostel which I now can’t stay at in Amsterdam. I’m trying to cancel but they’re saying they want the full payment AS WELL as the deposit I already paid.

I froze my debit card for the time being in case they try anything funny, but what should I do in the long term? Would they chase after me legally if I were to just blow them off? They already have the 80 euro deposit I paid, which I’m willing to bite the bullet on, but I don’t really feel like being out another 450.

Decline in Hostel experience/behaviour?

TLDR; are hostels just...worse now?

I stayed in hostels for the first time in 2017, when I did a 5 month backpacking trip across Europe. Of course, there was some snorers and loud packers, people who turned the lights on late at night etc... but no really bad behaviour. I remember there was one girl who was on the phone late at night and I thought it was horrific that anyone would answer a phone call in a shared room. I mean am I being unreasonable? But fast forward to now in NYC and the two girls in my room are on the phone at the same time. It's late, main light is still on, one girl is wearing dirty shoes into the ensuite leaving mud everywhere, someone moved my bag, girl above me is on the phone to her dad doing her taxes. This isn't just America either... my boyfriend travelled in Europe in Jan this year and some of the stories he told me were just awful and I was really shocked because I'd had such positive experiences, i'd recommended hostel travelling to him ! What gives? My understanding is that when sharing a room you try to make yourself as least disruptive to others as possible, be friendly, introduce yourself, keep your space tidy and keep quiet, especially at night. Does anyone else think theres been a decline in hostel behaviour?

Nice airy London hostel recommendations?

I was staying in a hostel a few weeks ago and had a bit of a panic attack, it felt so oppressive with the bunks so close together and the corridors so narrow, and everyone breathing up my oxygen. And that with it only half full. Can anyone suggest a nice roomy, airy London hostel with openable windows thanks.

(It was the yha in Cambridge. I felt better after a couple of nights)

Confused which one to pick

Hey guys, heading to Amsterdam this November. Absolutely confused which hostel to pick. Want the best of both worlds - party and relax a bit. Shortlisted the Flying pig downtown, St Christophers and the Bulldog. Priority is a clean washroom and I’m tall 6’1, so want a bed where my feet don’t t hang out. It’s my first time staying in a Hostel so apologise for the naivety in this post (if any). Its also nerve wracking that the airbnb’s are all located far away from the city centre but kind off affordable however the private rooms in Hostels just seem like a rip off.

I also love smoking weed but with all the coffee shops around i don’t think smoking in the hostel is much of a priority, although I am aware that all the 3 hostels have a dedicated smoking area.

Hostelworld Data Leak/ Scam Warning

Hi, my group made two reservations to a hostel through Hostelworld about a week ago. This morning I received the following email:

"Hello dear guest, I am the manager of [Hostel Name].

We would like to inform you that your reservation is in danger of being canceled. In order to keep your reservation at our [Hostel Name] , please contact us immediately by reply message to this email.

If you ignore this message, your reservation will be canceled within 8 hours.

Thank you for your understanding [Hostel Name]!"

Second email:

"If you do not follow this procedure, the booking will be considered fraudulent, which will result in the booking being canceled and your Hostelworld account being blocked."

Now, obvious scam. I did respond asking what the problem was and another email was sent from a different address saying they would help me with my problem. I contacted the hostel directly and lo and behold it was a scam. I didn't give them any info so I am fine.

But what I am actually concerned about is how did the scammer get my information, hostel booking, and my name? What other information did they get? Did Hostelworld have a data leak? This is seriously unprofessional of them and I want to warn anyone who has booked recently to be careful. People might also want to hold off on Hostelworld for a bit as well. I sent them a message but who knows if they'll respond.

Stay safe out there friends!

EDIT: Alright, Hostelworld responded! They said:

"Thank you for your email advising of suspicious correspondence received purporting to be from a hostel you booked via the Hostelworld platform.

We wish to assure you that we have fully investigated the concerns you raised, and confirm that the Hostelworld platform and systems have not been compromised.

We have engaged directly with the hostel in relation to the circumstances, and understand that the hostel was subject to a phishing attack, the result of which caused booking details maintained by the hostel to be accessible. We have liaised with the hostel to ensure their passwords have been changed and to limit the extent of the vulnerability. The hostel understands their requirement to notify impacted customers. We have explained the importance of security awareness to the hostel, and the hostel has assured us that they will review their systems and controls to ensure against the risk of a similar incident occurring again in the future.

We appreciate the trust our customers place in the Hostelworld platform, and require the highest compliance standards from the hostel partners we work with. As we do not operate or control any properties on our platform, we rely on the hostels to ensure continual vigilance of ongoing security threats. We deeply regret your experience on this matter and wish to assure you that we will continue to work with our hostel partners to ensure continual awareness and implementation of appropriate security controls and measures.

Thank you for bringing your concerns to our attention."

So it was indeed on the hostel's end, which is a bummer. I appreciate Hostelworld responding and also talking to the hostel! A reminder to be careful of phishing attacks all!

Hostel Room Assignment (By Age Range?)

Hey guys. I'm just genuinely curious. Do hostels specifically the ones in Europe, assign you a hostel room with roommates that are basically within the same age range as you? So let's say if I'm 20, I will be put into 20-25, and so on. Or is it completely random? You can be 20 and be with a roommate that is in his/her 40's.

Thank you.

Dorms: how to know if it's a loud/party one or not

Going to Guatemala and Belize, my first time staying in hostels. I'd like to try dorms instead of private, to save money and also maybe a good way to meet folks. I've got my earplugs, my white noise earbuds etc, but still concerned about late partying/nose etc. Is there a way to tell which hostel/dorm is more of party/late night/late lights out type vs the opposite? Do I need to read through all the reviews, should I email each one, ask some locals when I get there? Other way to know? Thanks!
