Solo packing a kayak

I’m a 5’2 and prepping for a solo kayak camping trip, but rented a kayak locally to take with me instead of getting one at my destination (cheaper). This came with the challenge of figuring out how to get it down from and back onto my car by myself.

Proud to say after 10 tries, half an hour, and a few bruises I figured out a way to get my kayak onto the top of my car by myself without scratching my paint! Really makes me appreciate my inflatable paddle board.

Old Town vs Vibe vs Lifetime Quality Question

Hello All,

I'm a total beginner to kayaking, but I'm a fairly avid outdoorsman who enjoys backpacking/camping/etc. Last fall a group of friends and I borrowed some kayaks and went on a 3 day camping tour down river about 30 miles and had a great time. Now I'm looking to pick one up for myself. I've read through some posts here and reviews online and narrowed it down to three kayaks in my area that are all close in price. My local sporting goods store is selling a Lifetime Teton Pro for $650 (can't find it locally used but theres others similar), there's a used Vibe Sea Ghost for $600 and a used Old Town Sportsman for $800 for sale near me.

I'm wondering if there is a significant difference in quality between these three or if I should base it solely on price. I don't fish, and I'm not particularly concerned with speed. Really just something comfortable and with enough storage to hold my dry bag of gear and a cooler for maybe 2-4 day long weekend trips down a river. I won't be doing any open water kayaking or anything like that, just exclusively kayak camping. Figured I would go straight to the pros. Thanks for any suggestions or help.

stupid question from a total beginner

hello, i have a question and for reference i don’t really kayak, my parents own a few but i’ve only done it in small lakes. my boyfriend has a friend who invited him on a 3 day kayaking trip on a local, huge river and i wanted to know is this as dangerous as i think? my boyfriend has about he same experience as i, and doesn’t know anything really. like i’m under the impression that this is really dangerous for someone who doesn’t kayak really, as i know rivers can have strong undercurrents and it’s not totally uncommon to hear about people drowning in this river. any advice would be appreciated, thank you in advance.

Giant head helmet recommendations

I have a large alien shaped head, long and narrow and it sticks out a bit at the back, helmets are always a hassle to get to fit right. Currently using a large Shred Ready Rescue Pro, it was the biggest I found, and I still had to cut foam out of the front to fit, but it's a little loose at the sides. I want to start getting out rock gardening and surfing in the cold, but there's no way I'm fitting even a thin neoprene hood under this, let alone a 3mm one.

Any other freaks out there with some recs?

Any inflatable kayak recommendations?

Thinking about ditching my Oru Coast XT for either the Lake model or an inflatable.

I’ve never kayaked in an inflatable before so not sure how it tracks.

I’m considering downgrading from my Coast XT because I’ve moved from New York to Texas so mostly kayaking calm waters like lakes and I also got rheumatoid arthritis triggered by my pregnancy. So, I’m really looking for a kayak that’s easy to set up with my hands.

I’ve been looking at the Itiwit. Heard it feels similar to a hardshell which is one of the things I love about the Oru, hardshell feel and portable.

Kayak multiday rental question

I am a casual Kayaker looking to a more epic multiday trip in Arizona/Utah. One thing I cannot figure out getting access to a Kayak for multiple days? Is multiday kayal rentals a thing? Currently looking into the Horshoe bend area.

Line between a Rec and a Touring Kayak?

So I live in this area and was looking to get some kayaks. I assume if we're on the river or nearshore (i.e. along a beach within swimming distance), we wouldn't need a touring kayak.

There are tour operators that are on Big Hickory Island and Lover's Key that kayak on the waters within the island that seem to use standard, sit on top rentals.

However I'd assume we'd need something touring oriented to go from 1 to 7, 7 to 8, etc.

Does this sound correct? I just don't want to end up with the wrong gear and end up in a bad situation.

Are Cobra Kayak Explorers sold in US (ship or pickup in MD/VA/NC) or...

My folks' Cobra Explorer kayaks were stolen (North Carolina). We need to submit replacement cost to insurance, but cannot get through to the company and haven't been able to find them online or in local stores. Does anyone know if they are still sold and if so, where?

We also want to replace them with the same or similar (lighter but as strong & stable would be great). The whole family uses them, from my late 80s mom to the teenagers. Various skill levels. Many of us have been using them since they purchased them in 1999 ($1400 for both back then). Some use them in the ocean, some fish, but most use them in the canals and intracoastal waterway. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Pelican Sentinel X or XP?

Getting my first kayak and I only want to spend max $500. I'm mainly looking for something light, maneuverable, and have decent storage space (so I can bring a small amount of camping gear along). I live in an area that has pretty shallow waterways and I'll be avoiding rapids and sticking to small lakes, canals, and ponds.
A local shop has a few on sale and I'm between these two:
(with links to pelican's website, Canadian prices)

Sentinel X for $450
https://www.confluenceoutdoor.com/en-ca/products/sentinel-100x-angler-fishing-kayak/MBF10P104-00

Sentinel XP for $500
https://www.confluenceoutdoor.com/en-ca/products/sentinel-100xp-angler-fishing-kayak/MGF10P103-00

I really like the smaller X because it seems like I can get it around easily. But the XP is half a foot longer, it tracks straighter, and the seat is a lot better; also seems more stable and like I could actually fit camping gear in it. I'm not afraid to do some modifications, like I'm expecting to add a hatch no matter what I get.

Does anyone have any insight on these? Is the XP worth an extra $50? I'm thinking it probably is.

Thanks! New to this sub : )

Kayak carrier for 2013 Santa Fe

Planning to buy my first kayak. Don't know much about them, but will look for a cheap, one man kayak.

I have a 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe.

I'll need a roof carrier - what should I know? Do they fit any vehicle? Do I need a certain type for my vehicle? Do they fit all cars?

What’s a good kayak?

I’m looking for an all around kayak for leisure and a few small camping trips. I’m not totally inexperienced but I have always borrowed kayaks now I want to buy one. I’m looking for a 12ft in length and a carry weight of 275+. Any recommendations/tips/advice is welcomed. Thank you. Edited: a little more info I will be kayaking on rivers, streams, and lakes. My budget currently is around $800. I have no preference on sit in or on.

Hobie Certificate of Origin Question

Maybe someone can assist me with some knowledge.

Adding a bixpy to my Outback I bought new at the end of 2018. My state requires a Certificate of Origin which I guess I never requested when purchasing it. I understand if you go to a Hobie dealer they can assist, but I live much further out now and there’s not a dealer within a few hours. Is there another way to get one of these?

Suitable Kayak for fitness/exercise?

Hello, Kayakers.

I'm looking into getting a kayak for exercise, I usually kayak around the harbor in Ventura to get my heart pumping, sometimes I'll peak out of the harbor and into the ocean. I love it, but I've been using a family member's kayak and I want to buy my own.

Any recommendations on what type of kayak would be best?

Thanks!
