Trying to Remember Old Promenade Restaurant

In Westlake at the promenade around 2001 there was the Macaroni Grill and another restaurant but we can’t remember the other place and it’s driving us nuts. Anyone remember??

Thousand Oaks deaths

I graduated from TOHS in 2009 and moved out of state in 2014. My friend group now is obviously from all over the place and I was talking with them about how I’ve had at least one friend/acquaintance die of suicide or drug overdose every 2 years or so since high school (not all of these were TOHS alum but were still people I knew from the area). They were amazed at this but I just assumed it was part of getting older.

Do millennials who grew up in the Conejo Valley have a suicide/drug OD rate that’s relatively higher? If so, does anyone have any idea why? I definitely have noticed a lot of people my age from TOHS (including myself) have some sort of drinking and/or drug problem compared to my social circle now. I’m sure that is somehow correlated.

Any good fishing spots nearby?

Looking to do some more bass fishing this summer was hoping if anyone had any public fishing spots they’d like to share. I don’t trust Fishbrain to not get me a trespassing charge lol.

Be Nice and Spread Kindness

To the person who got off their work truck a few weeks ago at Home Goods in TO and had the audacity to ask me “man, why do you look so mean?” Please consider the fact that you have no idea what people are going through, it’s none of your business to comment on people’s facial expressions. I was speechless but honestly I wish I said “And why are you so RUDE?” Mind your own business and please, people in this area have gotten really caught up in the mentality of “you owe me.” And it’s not a good look. If you have nothing nice to say, don’t say it. Keep comments to yourself. Bring people up instead of tearing them down. Stop rushing around and tailgating people on the roads and freeway. Kanan off ramp and everywhere else for that matter are out of control with rushing and speeding and bullying people into going faster. Please spread this message and have a good day! Remember, you don’t owe anyone anything. People may bully you into thinking you do, but you don’t.

"Assembly-line" Mexican restaurants in/near TO?

I'm specifically looking for the type of restaurant where you can point to what you want in your tacos/burritos/taco salads etc., so you can specify quantities of items. The same way that Chipotle works, but not Chipotle!

Are there any places like that around here?

Chicago Deep Dish Style Pizza?

I recently learned about Chicago deep dish style pizza, and I would love to try some from a pizza place instead of buying frozen. If anyone knows a place to go somewhere nearby, let me know please. Thank you. :)

Volunteer Restoration Opportunity at Fillmore Fish Hatchery

Hello everyone!

I am a Corpsmember with the Watersheds Stewards Program, and I am partnering with Channel Islands Restoration and Friends of the Santa Clara River to host a volunteer event aiming to improve habitat quality for the federally threatened Southern Steelhead Trout. The event is on April 28th, 2024, from 8:30am-12:30pm on the Sespe Cienega Nature Trail at the Fillmore Fish Hatchery, in Fillmore, CA.

I am seeking volunteers for the event as this will be a great way to learn about the environment, give back to the community, and celebrate Earth Day! The event will include an educational component regarding ethnobotany and native species in local watersheds. There will also be snacks and a raffle for an REI gift card.

More information is available using the QR code on the flyer or this link https://forms.gle/oVaz49orfRLb7yC59 and I am happy to answer any questions. Thanks redditors!

Driving schools for teens

I'm looking for recommendations for a summertime driving program for my teens. I haven't done a deep dive yet, but I see some programs are self-paced online courses. What about the actual driving part? Any place that you highly recommend? Any place to avoid?

Housing

I’m looking for cheap housing near Callu, up to about 20 minutes away but everything is so expensive. Does anyone have any recommendations on cheap apartment complexes for studio-2 bedroom apartments? I’m 20 years old and wouldn’t mind if people reach out if they have open rooms or open house! Thank You!

Seeking Help from my Community

Hey everyone,

Firstly, yes, I'm embarrassed and using a throwaway for this situation so I can share some details. Also, I am not used to asking for help (solving problems has always been my "thing"), so, not sure how this will turn out. Please bear with me.

I'm an unemployed software engineer and going underwater. I'm looking for immediate work of any kind. I'd be most valuable within my field, but at this point, I will take on anything. I'll build fences if it will get my account above zero in time. (full disclosure: I've built alot of things, but never a fence).

If you know anyone that might have some temporary work available, Please DM me. I will gladly share my credentials and discuss my background in more detail.

Why/How: I've been in T.O. for almost ten years, the majority of which, I held a respectable position at a firm in Westlake... And the last two of which I've spent unemployed and "unhoused". I'm not on the streets - I've been barely scraping together $2300/mo for an overpriced motel room.. the cost of which is ironically also preventing me from being able to save for a more affordable living situation.

I left to pursue a venture in the AI space which nearly worked out very well. Unfortunately, I'm an experienced engineer - but a fledgling marketer. I was overshadowed by a similarly innovative product released by a now-famous company many months after mine. (That saga is not over - Would be happy to share details to anyone interested)

For the record, I have applied for various jobs in recent months with no luck.

Apologies for posting here. I'm running out of moves at this point so I'm exhausting all available resources.

Thousand Oaks clinic offering quick blood tests for heart disease research — pays $45

A local clinic (located within Los Robles Regional Medical Center) is offering free blood tests as part of a national study about heart disease. They test your Lp(a) levels, which can be an indicator for heart disease risk, and call you later with your test results.

You get a $45 Visa gift card at the end of your appointment. The appointment takes 20 minutes.

Wildflower hike for old folks

Hello! My nearly 70 year old parents are visiting from Chicago this week and we are on the hunt for an easy but beautiful hike or viewing area/scenic drive for wildflowers perhaps in Malibu or Topanga Canyon or somewhere within an hour from Thousand Oaks. We live next to Wildwood park, which we have walked to with them, but my mom did struggle to adjust and had to sit down for some time to regain energy.

I say Malibu first because ocean views would be awesome since they’re from the Midwest. We may also want to dine on the beach after since today is beautiful and we only have until Saturday and the 2 days next seem meh weather-wise.

Where would you take your Mom if she was not the strongest hiker but loves nature and wildflowers? Where would you take her to eat after? And while you’re thinking of cute plans, where would you take your parents in LA to experience Hollywood vibes? They do not drink. I was considering Black Rabbit Rose magic lounge & Hollywood walk of fame tomorrow… maybe amoeba records.. not sure what vibe to go for. I have ADHD and a lot of ideas but not the best sense of timing.

Thank you in advance!!

Best Apartment for New Resident

Potentially moving to the Thousand Oaks area for work. Any recommendations for a good apartment complex for a single male in their 30s. Ideally 1 bedroom, no studio. I’ve seen some places that I like in Woodland Hills and would be open to that area/commuting 15 miles to Thousand Oaks unless that is deemed a bad idea?

Is it possible to keep it under 3K for a nice place?

So who's going to reopen the roller dome in the 99c store location?

Juat saying now that 99c only stores are all closing maybe someone with some money wants to reopen the roller dome as it was in the 90s since it seems the style of the 90s/00s is coming back...

Could be a good opportunity for someone!

Place for safe overnight parking?

Hi, planning an overnight hiking/camping trip with some friends. Plan is to meet up near the entrance to Big Sycamore Canyon and hike in.

Can anyone recommend a safe place to park our cars overnight near the trailhead? I was hoping we could park on Portrero but seeing no parking signs unless permitted (is there a way to get an overnight permit?).

Thank you!

Who has moved here from the South Bay?

Just curious how you liked the transition. I'm currently in the South Bay but love visiting our family friends in TO once a year. We plan on making a few more trips each year to check out the parks, malls, etc.

Cost of living at TO

I was wondering how life was for small family with total annual household income of $150k? FB marketplace and Zillow shows the rent for 2bhk is in $3k-3.5k range. Is this estimate right? Are there any affordable places/cities to rent nearby where commute to TO is possible? I’m not sure if I should be moving here or not due to high cost of living. Buying a single family home seems almost impossible. What do you people think?

Thai red chilis

Anyone have any idea where to buy Thai red chilis ( also known as Birds Eye ). Thought Vons used to have but most markets just seem to have the typical assortment of serranos, habaneros and jalapeños. Tried Namaste Spiceland as well and they didn’t have.
