Looking for a book club

Hello! I’m a pretty avid reader and have been wanting to get into a book club since I moved to Bakersfield a few years ago. I just have no idea where to start or look. Any advice? Hopefully a book club with a group of women late 20s to early 30s.

Structure Fire

STRUCTURE FIRE

Reported at 11:24 P.M. on January 30th, 2025.

OILDALE, Calif. around 11:24 PM a fire on the side of a house was reported. Upon arrival, resources found a small grass fire with the vacant structure partly involved. Crews quickly got to work cutting down the wooden boards of the building and the fence on the side of the property with chainsaws. The same structure had caught fire just last week, although this time the structure was much less involved with flame.

The incident is now over and resources have not determined the cause at this time.

A detailed location will be posted in comments.

Questions for locals in 1999

I’m writing a movie set in Bakersfield and the greater kern county area and am interested in hearing from people who lived here during december into new years in 1999.

1.) What was the general feeling of daily life? What was going good? what local problems do you remember from the time

2.) Most popular bars or clubs in Bakersfield

3.) Landmarks that have remained more or less untouched since 1999.

Anything else you feel worth sharing about the community and life in Bakersfield!

Blanket/Quilt repair

When I was a kid (about 7) an elderly woman who was 103 years old that sewed quilts for charity gave me a really cool gecko / cow quilt.

I’ve had it for just over 25 years now. It’s starting to show rips etc. but it’s still in very good condition

Are there any services locally where it can be repaired? This quilt means a lot to me. I was given it when I was told I was dying. I survived. And it came with me through all stages of my life, every hospitalization, even up to my transplant a few years ago.

Best immigration lawyer in the city?

Wondering if anyone has any recommendations? Just need some simple questions answered so maybe more of a consultation? (don’t need to hire them).

Anybody want to meet up and just hang out and play doubles on a table? Maybe get food afterwards? Lemme kno 😋

So, the LaMina on Auburn has closed up shop, but there seems to be construction going on inside. Does anyone know what might be moving in to that spot?

Yesterday's Warehouse Fire: Official Update/Press Release from Kern County Fire Dept.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif., On January 29, 2025, at 12:08 p.m., Kern County firefighters responded to the 100 block of Washington St. for a reported warehouse fire. A large column of smoke was visible, prompting a second alarm response. Upon arrival, firefighters found a 30,000-square-foot warehouse heavily involved in fire. Located in a yard with multiple other warehouses, firefighters immediately adopted a defensive strategy to protect adjacent structures. Piles of compacted bales of plastic, stacked from floor to ceiling, burned intensely, weakening the warehouse’s metal framework. Within minutes, the building began to collapse, with flames shooting through the roof.

The incident is ongoing. Firefighters have successfully contained the flames to the affected warehouse, preventing further spread. At present, the intense heat is lifting the smoke up and away from the nearby community. Travel may be impacted in the vicinity due to the water supply lines laid for firefighting efforts.

Crews continue to make progress despite challenges posed by the large volume of burning material and the limited water supply in the area. This operation will extend throughout the day and into the night and a large column of smoke is expected to remain visible. Rest assured, firefighters will remain on the scene until the fire is fully extinguished.

No injuries have been reported. The cause is under investigation.

Help for senior citizens in Delano

Can anyone offer some suggestions for senior citizens assistance in Delano? My uncle is in his late 80s and lives alone. He can't drive anymore due to an accident and also hurt his back so he's having a hard time jist getting around his home.

He was able to get Dial a Ride. Are there any other services in that area?

Thank you

Good hair cut places for detangling?

I have really fine hair that tangles easily and I just need some help. It’s not severe or anything but Great Clips won’t touch it because they don’t have a way to charge for that.

Jury Duty

Hello. My summon date started on Monday and my group number is in the high 80s. As of today, Wednesday, I haven’t been called. I noticed that only about 10 groups a day go to report and since I’m on the high 80s, I feel like I wouldn’t have to report for few days.

What is the likelihood of getting called with a group number that high?

How do you meet new people in Bakersfield (preferably aged 20-26)!?

I (25m) have been living here after moving here 3 years ago. Trying to meet new people in general (though meeting women my age and getting dates would be preferable) but no matter what I never see anyone my age and it they are they aren't open to talking and try to leave conversations fast. I graduated from CSUB this past December. Even there the campus was always empty, students were always 40 and up, the young students weren't interested in making friends or hanging out outside of class, everyone was in a rush to go home all the time, etc. There are no clubs or organizations here in Bakersfield (all the FaceBook groups never respond with most having not posted updates in years), and I have yet to get a single swipe from a girl on Tinder or any dating app here.

Is it just impossible to meet young people here? At all the stores and restaraunts and bars I go to its always people aged 40 and up.
