5 fun things to do in & around YEG this week

What's Up Sherwood Park! Once a week I go through most events happening in and around our beautiful city over the coming week, and then send a large list out to my friends. I thought I should share it here.

Get this & 40+ other events as a weekly email update:

https://whatsupedmonton.beehiiv.com/subscribe

Note: The linked publication is ad free & non-monetized. Use it as a directory of things to do as we reconnect in our communities. I send it out every Tuesday morning.

P.S. To all of you who regularly read the publication, send me emails and read/respond to these reddit posts... you folks rock! Thanks for all the positive feedback. It means a lot = )

Note: Folks, you'll have to grant me a hall pass for this week. I'm well under the weather & have opted to keep things short and sweet. Regular programming to recommence next week... hopefully...

5 cool events this week:

  • Leduc County Lights
  • Royal Canadian Artillery Band
  • Light Up The Alberta Legislature
  • Santa Skate (Strathcona County)
  • International Day of Persons With Disabilities

Leduc County Lights

Residents of Leduc County (and surrounding areas), suit up in your winter best & prepare yourselves for a holiday experience like few others. For only 3 bucks a person, you can enjoy a walk on cleared pathways through one of the largest decorated light ups in the area. Bonfires are scattered throughout the premises, washrooms are on site and this event is dog friendly. The best part? Proceeds beyond operational costs are donated to local youth-focused organizations. Though not required, it's also encouraged to bring a donation for the local Food Bank. This event runs daily until December 31st, though it's closed on Christmas eve & Christmas day.

Royal Canadian Artillery Band

For fellow fans of orchestral music, you're going to love this one. The RCA band is hosting their annual Christmas performance at the Winspear, and tickets are FREE (though a small donation is strongly encouraged). Supporting the Military Family Resource Center, this annual event is feature showing of instrumental prowess & rhythmic discipline. Though they haven't posted their "set list", you can expect a mixture of complex classical hits & fun family favourites (at least, that's been my experience in the past few years). As this is a Winspear performance, tickets are required. Be sure to grab yours soon as they're moving quickly.

Light Up The Alberta Legislature

This coming Tuesday evening, head over to the Legislature grounds for a spectacular FREE light up event. Attendees will find themselves immersed in live music performances & family-friendly activities. Explore a few attractions and purchase hot chocolate (by donation). Best of all, be sure to head outside and see the light up of their giant Christmas tree, which will also be accompanied by festive entertainment.

Santa Skate

Residents of Strathcona County (and those in the general area), grab your gear (or enjoy FREE rentals) and head over to the Glen Allan Recreation Complex for the FREE annual Santa Skate. Aside from the free rentals & endless photo opportunities, those in attendance can enjoy cookie decorating, colouring, hot chocolate and endless laps on finely shined engineered ice. Skate aids will be available & helmets are recommended. Unfortunately, no sticks or pucks are allowed at this one, though the county does host regular skates where those items are allowed.

International Day of Persons With Disabilities

This coming Tuesday is the official International Day of Persons with disabilities, and there are a few events taking place throughout the week to commemorate. Spruce Grove & Sherwood Park are hosting FREE Try It! events, where you can give sports like sledge hockey or wheelchair basketball a go. There is also a FREE "Talking Hand" show, which can be equally enjoyed by all. If you've never had the chance to try sledge hockey, go try it out. It's a great time and you'll meet some incredible people while doing so.

Canadian Tire Flo Station - Wye Road

Just to warn other EV drivers against using this station. We have always had issues regarding transfer rates at this station, and I avoid it at all cost. Today using it was unavoidable and I'm paying the price, quite literally. We have never experienced slowed transfers due to the cold, heat, etc, nothing is wrong with our vehicle. It's this station, which Flo claims goes back to the Canadian Tire store.

Hourly Trade Rates

I'm trying to get a general idea of what trades that come to your home to do basic things like plumbing, electrical or gas furnace maintenance work would charge? Has anyone had work done recently that they don't mind sharing the hourly rate of? Or service call cost? Or even small quoted jobs?

5 cool events this week:

  • The Bee
  • Lights Up! (Fort Sask)
  • Free Admission @ AGA
  • Lite Up The Nite (Morinville)
  • The Salvation Army's Festival of Carols

The Bee

When was the last time you could call yourself the nerdiest kid on your block (and it be true)? When did your peers last dote you & pay homage to your brainy brawn, thanks in due part to an interstellar performance of wit & wary where you fought hard and came through scathed yet victorious? The answer, of course is this week! Sign up now for EPL's annual adult-only capstone spelldown in which many will fall & only one will rise while out spelling them all. Verbally exemplify your linguistic prowess as you vowel & consonant your way towards the ultimate bragging right & simultaneously become the epitome nerd, your stark white socks pulled triumphantly high as you march before us mere mortals who chose to silently watch from afar rather than risk our egos (ehrm... professional dignity) in the onslaught that was. If you're so inclined, tuck that pencil behind a lobe & don your sturdy horn-rimmed glasses before signing up for this time-honoured tradition! It's FREE, for both competitors & their audience.

Lights Up!

If that daunting task doesn't suit you well, unwind instead this week in Fort Saskatchewan at the annual Light's Up mini-festival. This FREE event features several light shows, a caricature artist, live music, carolers, face painting, a petting zoo, fire pits & so much more. Of course, this event wouldn't be what it is without the light-up, so get on down & grab yourself a cookie/hot chocolate, partake in the festivities, hang with your neighbours & enjoy the spectacular arrangements.

Free Admission @ AGA

Whether you're looking for a fantastic date night idea or a hearty injection of culture on a budget, I've got you covered. This Thursday evening only from 4-7pm, head down to the Art Gallery of Alberta to see what's on display. Though there is no specific event on this particular evening, admission is FREE meaning you get to make your own event! Check out some cubism before hitting up Made By Marcus? Check. See 75+ works of art from private local collections before bouncing to Maria for some (delicious) authentic Mexican grub? Check & check. Learn about J.W.G. MacDonald and his particular influence on the AGA before heading out for a romantic stroll beneath the bright neon of YEG's free outdoor sign museum... check, check and check! So there you have it. The night is yours, make of it what you will = )

Lite Up The Nite

Morinvillans, rejoice. For your time has come to take in this season's splendours on a dime other than your own. For this entire next weekend, hit up your local township for a slew of FREE, fun & family friendly activities. Including but not limited to... an old-fashioned Christmas party, a free keepsake photo with Santa, decorate a cookie (but don't you dare eat it), hula hoop performances & horse drawn wagons, live music, a parade, fireworks & a whole lot more! There is a paid coffee/snacks bar but hot chocolate is free while supplies last.

The Salvation Army's Festival of Carols

For fans of live classical & choral music, this weekend you can check out the SA's Festival of Carols at the Winspear, for FREE. This Christmas concert features three performing groups/artists including the lovely Miriam Khalil, The (epic) Pipes and Drums of the Edmonton Police Service & the venerable SA Edmonton Temple Band. Grab your family & friends and be sure to enjoy this evening of rhythm and harmony.

Question about humidity

Hello there

We just moved to the park and this will be our first winter here.

Moved from Calgary where the relative humidity inside the house was consistently between 23-45%. Running the fans would bring that down several points in an hour. Never really had a window fogging issue unless we had -30 for a week straight.

Since we moved to Sherwood, I’ve noticed that the relative humidity in the house NEVER goes below 50% no matter how long I run the fans for. Is this purely climate related? Or do I have potential envelope issues I need to be tracking down? I’ve also noticed the windows are starting to fog as soon as we hit negative temperatures.

In both homes I ran the circulation fans 30+ minutes per hour.

Thanks for your time.

Job search in sherwood park for 18 year old guy

Hello everyone, Sherwood Park community,

I've been living in the heart of Sherwood Park for two and a half years after immigration from Ukraine.

My 18-year-old brother search part time job, recently graduated from ABJ school(leave before exam ). He arrived 8 month ago .

While his English is still developing, he can understand and hold basic conversations, making him suitable for entry-level positions like cashier work.

However, we've been facing challenges securing employment. Despite multiple resume revisions, in-person applications, and other strategies, he's been unsuccessful in landing roles "back stuff" like Walmart.

I work remotely in IT and am unable to directly assist him in his job search I mean give him some referrals.

He's actively seeking employment opportunities within Sherwood Park. Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

We can assume that he doesn't have a very good knowledge of English but still learn and visit courses

Thank you for any advice and help.

Police at end of road

On Thursday there was a bunch of police cars at the house on Sconadale Road that’s across from the little church on range road 231. Peace officers also had the road blocked. Does anyone know what happened there?

5 cool events this week:

  • Winterval
  • Kids With Wigs: Latin Dance Night Fundraiser
  • Hangin' With Dad
  • Edmonton Story Slam
  • Jill of All Trades

Winterval

Like it or not, winter 2024 is here and here to stay, at least for a while. On a positive note, however, the Edmonton Downtown Bussiness Association is throwing a party in its honour... and you're invited! This coming weekend, head to the downtown core for a slew of epic activities. There'll be live music from Brasstactics, Major Love, Korora Carolers, Melafrique, The Handbell Society & Johnny Infamous, entertainment from Seeka Sings, maple tafffey, photos with Santa, ice carving lessons, a vendor market, retro-painted windows, deals from area businesses & a heck of a lot more! Oh, and if that's not good enough, the vast majority of those things (and more) are FREE. Catch you all there.

Kids With Wigs: Latin Dance Night Fundraiser

I often hype up these Latin dance events (on good authority!), albeit (admittedly) somewhat hypocritically as my two left feet & I have yet to make it to one. That being said, if there's a first BKS event to hit up, it's this one. Fundraising for wigs, for kids who've lost their hair due to illness, this beginner-friendly event is sure to make both you & many others feel absolutely fantastic. Attendees can expect several hours of Latin dancing in the styles of Salsa, Bachata & Kizomba. The night will commence with a lesson followed by several hours of socialization & dancing to live DJ's. In addition, there'll be a silent auction, as well as tacos (from which a dollar per taco is donated to the cause). For all of us who had more or less normal childhoods with all our limbs & typical attributes, one can imagine the difficulties children sans hair may have amidst their peers. If you're up for a good time, this < $30/person event will be awesome.

Hangin' With Dad

For all the mom's reading this, I have some fantastic news for you. In the nearer future, you get to enjoy a afternoon off to do the things that you enjoy in the quiet & comfort of your own, peaceful home. Dad's, Grandads & other male caregivers, scoop up your special 3-10 year olds for a half-day together at the Ridgewood Community League. Those in attendance get to hangout with their favourite superheroes, build things out of lego, make box forts & have tons of fun! In addition, there is pizza & pretzels to share alongside delicious (root) beer. Mom's... you're welcome.

Edmonton Story Slam

I try to keep this list fresh for y'all, with minimal if any repeats. That being said, it's plausible I mentioned this event before but I don't care. The last round was epic & markedly worthy of further recognition. Founded a year past the Alberta Centennial, this long-running monthly event serves to discern and celebrate our talented local story writers/tellers. A friendly competition, 10 writers get 5 minutes each to spit their bit & from there, a winner is chosen. Unfortunately the venue is 18+ but the event is FREE. That being said, donations are accepted (though not at all expected) for the winners purse, with a suggested donation of $5. Either way, this uncensored event is a blast & I highly recommend checking it out.

Jill of All Trades

Sticking with (what's becoming) tradition & saving the best for last... NAIT is throwing an info bash this week for high school aged girls and young women who are interested in entering the skilled trades, but don't know where to start (or what they even like). This is a hands-on opportunity to try out a bunch of different trades, from welding to carpentry & others, and in addition, women from various skilled trades professions will be on site to guide these girls and show them just what they're capable of. As someone who started their career in the skilled trades & holds a deep respect for all tradespeople, I can speak firsthand on the exhilaration one feels when they first build something to perfection. The work rewards the worker in many ways & skills are learned that benefit that aforementioned worker for the duration of their life. If there is a young woman in your vicinity who is leaning towards a hands-on career in the trades, or that young lady is you, I highly recommend checking out this event.

Bit of a long shot, but.....

After working away for a few years, I just moved back to the edmonton area and i'm staying with my folks in sherwood park while I save to buy a place. feels strange to be back in the park after growing up here.

Seemingly all of my friends around here live in edmonton now so going out to see them is a bit of an ordeal, gets pretty expensive going out for drinks and concerts with them unless i've got a pad to crash at. I still do once in a while and I'm not broke, just doing my best to be frugal and get out of my parents place..

Long story short I'm a guy in my early 30's and making friends in my age group here seems next to impossible. Its a bit lonely out here. the couple of friends I had in the park have moved on. Figure reddit is as good a place as any to reach out.

I'm into video games, mountain biking, all kinds of music and the odd beer. I like fixing stuff, trying new things and nerding out with people over shared interests. Unfortunately I'm not a hockey guy but I'm not against getting way too into WWE with people XD

idk if anyone is in a similar situation here or knows a good way to meet people here. I'm not gonna be here forever but I'd love some company in the meantime.

feel free to comment on here or send me a DM or whatever :)

Bathroom Contractor

We have an older house, built in the 1970's with a typically small full bathroom with tub. We are looking at a complete redo of it all with new deep tub, tiling of the tub/shower, tiling of floor, new vanity and paint. There is no room for bathroom expansion, so we want to make the best of available space.

What we do not have is a list of potential contractors who are up to doing a high quality job and are dependable. Can my fellow Sherwood Parkers help me with some names that I could look at?

  • All is Bright Festival
  • The Olive Reading Series
  • Métis Week
  • Rather Be Ashes Than Dust
  • Latin Dance Night

All Is Bright Festival

Let me tell you folks. This week is a doozy. Theres so many awesome things happening in our community that it was tough to pick just five. But anyways... if you're looking for something to do this weekend, the venerable All Is Bright Festival is kicking off on 124 street. Attendees will find themselves immersed in a wonderland of light-up installations, a commemoration of the coming holiday season. Additional entertainment includes ice carving, fire shows, cookie decorating, light-up crafts, roaming performances, cuisine from local eateries, a beverage garden, live music from The Steadies & a whole lot more. Though this FREE festival runs for one night only, a further light installation will run every evening until December 1st. Folks, enjoy = )

The Olive Reading Series

An avoid poetry enthusiast myself, this well-attended monthly event checks off a number of boxes. I don't believe I've mentioned it here before but even if I have, it definitely deserves a little more recognition. Stolen directly from their website, "The Olive is the longest running, off-campus, out-of-bookstore poetry series in Edmonton". Having been alive & kicking since the turn of the century, it's outlived 5 (now defunct) local meetup joints & currently resides once a month at The Rooster. Anyways.. what makes this one so special? The event features two main poetry readings from artists of local to national acclaim who offer an insight into some of their latest work. Audiences are offered an opportunity to not only hear these works but are also given a chapbook featuring the same pieces as that one can read through the pieces on their own accord & understand it in their own way. A critically important piece of a true poetic experience, in the opinion of the folks backing The Olive. Following the speakers, the mic is opened to all those in attendance who wish to share a piece of their own work in a constructive & non-judgemental environment. Whether you live & breathe prose or as an enthusiast enjoy properties of its distinctive linguistic, you'll certainly enjoy this FREE event.

Métis Week

I'm a little late to the party on this one, as the recognized week actually commences today (the next letter edition launches on the 12th). That being said, there are a number of events taking place this week that commemorate this important & historical culture that underpins much of the Canadian/Canadien identity. In Edmonton, folks can attend a Seniors Tea, a Proclamation at City Hall, a Louis Riel Commemoration, Enjoy Chili & Bannock &/or an evening program at Fort Edmonton Park (Most of these are FREE). Out east of the Capital at Métis Crossing (on the North Saskatchewan, south of Smoky Lake... beautiful spot) there's a host of activities happening throughout the week plus FREE admission on Saturday. Meanwhile, midweek & west of YEG in Spruce Grove there is a FREE cultural celebration taking place featuring Métis musicians, artisans, cuisine & storytelling. Wherever you may be, there's likely something happening close by that's worthy of your time.

Rather Be Ashes Than Dust

While much of the world was hunkering down in anticipation of something different, an similarly drastic event was unfolding across the globe. One which tragically didn't receive near the media attention it deserved, especially considering the lasting devastation it created. Over 2019-2020, residents of Hong Kong put forth the largest demonstrations in the city's history. Why? To protest a bill to amend the Fugitive Offenders Ordinance in regards to extradition. Now, sticking through to my policy of keeping my publication as unattached from politics as able, I won't delve into the background on that but what I will tell you is that that specific bill amendment angered the residents of Hong Kong. Massively. To the point that hundreds of thousands of Hong Kong's residents packed the streets and staged a sit-in protest outside their Capital building. What happened past that is featured in a real-time documentary shot by a video-journalist present in the protest. I haven't seen this film personally, but it's reported to be graphic & everything shown is real, from the event. A special screening of it is happening this week at the Stanley Milner Library. It's FREE, but donations are welcome & will be graciously accepted.

Latin Dance Night

To keep it short and sweet, this Tuesday night, grab your indoor runners & some h2o & make your way down to 9910 for 5 HOURS of dancing. The evening features lessons to start, followed by several hours of busting moves & jamming grooves. Bring a friend or go solo & don't hold back from inexperience. All are welcome, beginners doubly so. This event is FREE if you arrive before 6:15pm. Otherwise there is a $10/cover fee for late arrivals.

Thanks for reading!

Trans women’s experience in Alberta?

24hr library?

So i’m a university student and the sherwood park library is like my haven for studying. Every table has a plug in, theres always quiet areas, its clean, and the atmosphere is just pleasant. When it closes at 9 if i need to keep studying I have to go home (hard to focus) or go to dennys (miserable place and not great study set up). If it could be open even like a couple more hours that would be so amazing.. but i don’t know if its probable? Is there anyone i can talk to about this? Would the librarians hate this?

Also if anyone knows anywhere else i can study late let me know!!
