Welcome

Hi, welcome to r/Homekit! Please remember to read the rules.

Rules

1. Keep it civil and safe for work.

Be nice and civil. As Reddiquette says, "Remember the human," and "Don't be rude at all." Harassment could get you banned from r/HomeKit the first time depending on the severity, (Don't try to test the mods) or the second time, almost always no matter what. This means you've chosen to break the rules. Rudeness will get you banned (7 days on average) when repeated, and incivility will also get you banned when repeated.

2. Posts must be related to HomeKit.

Only posts related to HomeKit are permitted. HomeBridge questions should go in r/HomeBridge, questions that are not related to HomeKit but are about a company's product that supports HomeKit should still go in that company's subreddit. If that company does not have a subreddit you can post in a subreddit such as r/HomeAutomation, r/SmartHome, etc. A list of company subreddit's can be found in the sidebar.

3. No Amazon affiliate and/or referral links.

No Amazon affiliate links and also no referral links that 'refer' you to Amazon affiliate links. An example of an Amazon affiliate link is amzn.to. These are automatically removed and using one could result in a permaban based on your previous post and comment history.

4. 'What to buy' and 'Should I buy....' questions go in the sticked megathread.

'What to buy' and 'Should I buy...' questions go in the the sticked megathread dedicated to these types of questions in order to keep the feed from being spammed with them.

Homekit Smoke Detectors

I'm thinking of getting Smoke Detectors because my X-Sense Smoke Detectors are fairly old now.

Does Homekit play a alarm sound instead of the normal notification and can you hear it if you have your phone in a Focus or Muted? This is very important to me.

Also what would you recommend to buy in Europe?

Making my gate homekit-compatible

I have quite a wide gate to my property and it's pretty slow. 52 seconds to be precise.

Now I already installed a shelly 1 with homekit firmware and it works, but there's one problem: Lets say the gate is closed and homekit thinks the gate is closed. Now I tell it to open the gate. Homekit switches to "open" and the gate opens up. When it's partially open, it might be enough to drive through so I press the homekit button again telling it to stop. Now the gate is half way open, but homekit thinks it's closed.

Then, in order to close it, I need to tell it to open up again, so then the gate is closed but homekit thinks it's open. You see my problem.

What I would like even better would be to see at how many % the gate is at the moment, and being able to tell it to just open 40%. Is that even possible? And how would you solve this problem I'm having?

Thermostat problem please help

Thermostat

Hi there.

In my flat I have a thermostat fitted. Was previously advised that my boiler would not ignite, if the temperature of the home was higher then the default thermostat temperature ( which is 18 degrees)

Today my flat is showing that it’s 21.5 degrees inside my flat ( very doubtful?!) and now I cannot get my radiators on to dry my washing.

I am really panicking and I have no idea what to do.

HomeKit not in sync with Aqara in various situations

Hi, for the last couple days, I’ve noticed some abnormal behavior going on in HomeKit. I have Aqara devices and use the security there, which has worked perfectly. It would sync with HK so Leave Home in HK would set Away Guard in Aqara, and Arrive Home would set Home Guard.

First issue: Aqara is set to arm and disarm automatically at certain times, and has been flawless. However, for the last couple days, Aqara app says this is still executed properly, but HomeKit says the opposite. Example: HomeKit up top says Disarmed yet the device tile says Armed, whereas Aqara says the entire system is Disarmed as it should be. So I opened a door to test, and sure enough, HomeKit prevailed and the alarm sounded.

Second issue: we always had HomeKit Arm/Disarm notifications for each Aqara hub appear together, one after the other. Now, we get one notification at the proper time, then the rest of them straggle in maybe a half hour later, one 15 minutes after that one, etc.

I did update to 17.5 on my phone as well as the HomePods and Apple TV.

HomePods also kick in a higher volume about 30 seconds into the song, but that’s another topic.

Anyone else having odd behavior recently? Any thoughts or suggestions to fix this? Thank you!

Latest update to Onvis CT3 contact sensor brings Thread version to 1.3

Someone has already posted about the (painfully complicated) update of their smart plug S4. There is also an update to their contact sensor CT3, 1.11.1, bringing Thread support to 1.3, as confirmed by both Onvis as well as the Discovery app. Most of mine (12) updated without issue, but I did have three that stopped properly showing status and had to be reset and then worked fine. Requires Bluetooth so you need to be near the device to update it.

Outdoor String/LED Rope Lights for Deck - Not Hue or Twinkly

Looking for a string or rope light to use under the railing of my deck, what I have now is not HomeKit and I really hate it.

I'd love to do Hue, but not being able to cut them is a problem, not spending that much money to have excess length that Im stuck with and cant cut off.

I tried the Twinkly brand as I've seen it reccomended a few times, hot garbage. HomeKit is only capable with 2.8.3 software, it ships with 2.8.15 and will not update to 2.8.3 no matter what you try. And their support is awful and unresponsive.

HomeKit keeps removing light

Hi there, anyone familiar with the following problem?

I recently replaced one of my Philips spots in the kitchen due to a faulty in the previous spot. I added the spot in the Hue app and also in HomeKit, added to my scenes and everything works fine (you would say). But every time after a week, for some reason, my new added spot got removed from the scenes I’ve made. I can add them again ofcourse, but every week he will remove the spot by itself. Any idea what’s happening here , because after adding the spot for 4/5 times now it’s getting annoying

HomeKit to old doorbell chime

Hey everyone. I recently bought an Aqara G4 doorbell. Works great with HomeKit (chime that comes along is very poor quality though). Chime through HomePod works, but I’d also like to reuse our (very) old chime, which even has a mercury switch in it. So I would need something of a switch in between which can be wirelessly triggered and close the door circuit of the chime. Anyone has any experience with this?

Yes I’ll clean it up and redo the wiring.

Create a touch screen smart display for my smart home

Hi there!

I am wondering if something like this is possible.

So I want to have a touch screen in my living room which manages my smart home. On this screen I can access HomeKit because there are all my switches and buttons. I can access Hikvision because there are all my security cameras. I can access some other proprietary applications like a screen for my solar panels or a simple full screen clock.

How can this be achieved? I was thinking I could use a Mac running MacOS and have big touch screen friendly icons on the Desktop? What are your ideas?

Bright Bulbs for Indoor Use?

I'm looking for a bright (> 1100 lumens) A19 HomeKit-compatible indoor bulb. I found that Philips Hue has a 1500 lm bulb, and I'm considering ordering it and a hub, but I'd prefer to go with a design that doesn't require a hub. I currently use the Nanoleaf A19 bulbs in most places. They're pretty good but not quite bright enough for this one use case.

Alternatively, I’d be open to bright, HK-compatible floor lamp suggestions. I had one in this place previously, but I had to use HomeBridge to talk with it (Tuya) and the controls were flaky, regardless of whether I used HB or its native app to control it.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Hot tub sensor?

Does anyone know of a Hot tub sensor that would monitor the temp of a hot tub? Can’t find one anywhere.

I had an INKBIRD one but it eventually failed.

Kosner Thermostat

Hey all.

I'm in Spain and a supplier just fitted us with aircon that has a Kosner "smart" Thermostat. It has the worst chinese app I've seen and won't connect to the thermostat.

I'm working with a 2.4ghz wifi network that works with my Meross Garage door opener (although that was also hell to get connected at first).

Anyone had a Kosner Thermostat and set it up successfully??

ps. I don't even know if it will work with Homekit once the "native" app is working.

Should I Stay or Should I Go? (Level Bolt Remix)

Hi all... Looking for advice/counseling :)

I have a Level Bolt; results when I first used it were spotty - I experienced much of the same issues everyone complains about - but I stuck with it since I already had invested in it. I will say though that, frustrated with how little it worked at the time, I didn't rely on it/use it all that much for a year or so and just basically accepted that I made an expensive mistake.

When I got an email from Level last Fall about the Level Connect coming out and all its supposed benefits, however, I purchased one as a cheaper solution to potentially fixing my connection issues than scrapping everything and going with a Schlage Encode Plus; it also didn't hurt that it was 1/2 off.

Things worked pretty perfectly once I received and set it up -- no jam messages, and actually being able to consistently unlock the door remotely was a nice thing.

Anyway, the Connect died on my last week and I have been in contact with Level support on getting it fixed; strangely enough, I didn't get the usual run-around I and others have said they also experienced in the past, and they actually agreed to send me a new Connect.

My question is though - should I continue with Level, or just move on, bite the bullet and go the even more pricy Schlage Encode Plus route at this point? Like I said, the Connect seems to work, but in another strange twist, without the Connect over the last week, I actually haven't encountered any issues with being able to remotely lock/unlock my door like I did way back in the beginning.

That said, I hate having to change batteries every 3 months and, as I'd love to transition more and more to Thread, love that the Encode Plus allows that.

As you can see -- long, rambling, discourse in my brain. Can anyone offer me some clarity?

Thanks :)

Other than a good transformer, any installation tips for a Logitech doorbell?

Despite my Netatmo doorbell working well, I can’t escape the ‘itch’ for HKSV. That combined with a good deal I got on one, I’ve decided to give the Logitech doorbell a try. Other than the oft discussed transformer needs, any other installation tips before I jump in? Thanks!

Hubs going down consistently

Hi everyone,

Was hoping for some feedback. I just moved into my new home and got my HomeKit all set up.

But, I see my hubs are constantly going down. I lose camera access for hours on end as well.

I was considering setting up a mesh network but would I have to unpair every item from HomeKit and re-pair them to a new Home under the mesh network? As far as I can tell there is no way to switch WiFi’s easily?

I have a Lutron bridge, Philips Hue Bride, and Eufy Bridge connected.

I would need at least 3 nodes and have an older Google WiFi system, I could use with my fiber connection.

Unless anyone has any better ideas I would hate to start it all from fresh and re-pair all the items.

Also, Sonos set up 😢

Any ideas or suggestions are welcome.

Thanks HomeKit fam.

Garage Entrance vs Garage Door voice commands

Hey all,

This just started happening like last month and I've ignored it until now but when leaving my garage I will say "Hey Siri, close the garage door" and it will automatically think i'm trying to close the garage entrance.

Has anyone else had this problem? It worked again for like 2 days and then stopped working after the 17.5 update.

Pleasant surprise - after updating my Apple TV 4k 2nd gen to 17.5, it remained the primary hub

Usually when I update the Apple TV to a new version one of my HomePod minis takes over. No biggie, I restart the HomePod and the Apple TV takes over again as primary hub. But this time it never stopped being the primary hub. After the update the Home app showed a few devices no response for just a few minutes, and then all returned to normal. Overall one of my better update experiences.

Any way to use these sensors with HomeKit?

Just moved in this house and all windows and doors have these sensors installed with them. I’m guessing they were all installed at the time the house was built in the 90s. Anyway to get them to work? Or can I repurpose the wiring for something else?

Best way to test Z-Wave Long Range contact sensor in HomeKit?

I’m interested in trying Z-Wave LR since I can’t use Thread to automate my mailbox door. Does anyone here have experience they could share on how to cheaply fold this into a home that’s rocking thread without doing Home Assistant? I don’t have any hubs/bridges other than Apple devices but I’m open to adding and am aware of the expensive all-in-one solutions.

The key difference between a star network and a mesh network is that the star allows direct gateway/hub-to-device connection, whereas the mesh networks traditionally permit signals to hop from node to node until the intended destination is met.

Reading the above from this site has me thinking it’s possible to not need more than one sensor for this project. Am I reading that right?

All suggestions and opinions are greatly appreciated!

Edit: Updated wording of first paragraph to avoid confusion.

How to remove a TV Home Hub as I'm not using it anymore anyways and I'm pretty sure its somehow the same as the currently connected Living Room Apple TV at the top of the list just maybe from a previous set up that is irrelevant now.
