Welcome

Hi, welcome to r/Homekit! Please remember to read the rules.

Rules

1. Keep it civil and safe for work.

Be nice and civil. As Reddiquette says, "Remember the human," and "Don't be rude at all." Harassment could get you banned from r/HomeKit the first time depending on the severity, (Don't try to test the mods) or the second time, almost always no matter what. This means you've chosen to break the rules. Rudeness will get you banned (7 days on average) when repeated, and incivility will also get you banned when repeated.

2. Posts must be related to HomeKit.

Only posts related to HomeKit are permitted. HomeBridge questions should go in r/HomeBridge, questions that are not related to HomeKit but are about a company's product that supports HomeKit should still go in that company's subreddit. If that company does not have a subreddit you can post in a subreddit such as r/HomeAutomation, r/SmartHome, etc. A list of company subreddit's can be found in the sidebar.

3. No Amazon affiliate and/or referral links.

No Amazon affiliate links and also no referral links that 'refer' you to Amazon affiliate links. An example of an Amazon affiliate link is amzn.to. These are automatically removed and using one could result in a permaban based on your previous post and comment history.

4. 'What to buy' and 'Should I buy....' questions go in the sticked megathread.

'What to buy' and 'Should I buy...' questions go in the the sticked megathread dedicated to these types of questions in order to keep the feed from being spammed with them.

Why are most people buying WiFi smart plugs when those will clog up internet connection?

When there are thread/zigbee accessories that won't mess with Internet speeds? Is it because WiFi smart plugs are cheaper?

Sengled Bulbs show No Response

For some reason the bulbs connected to my hub are all showing no response in homekit. The hub looks to be reporting in homekit. I can access these lights in the sengled app.

I have tried reboots and removing and adding the hub in homekit and sengled. Funny enough, when I re-add the hub in homekit, it lets me identify all my bulbs and name them. Once I do that though, they all report no response.

Alexa Ecosystem Integration into Home App

I currently have a full smart home setup within the Alexa ecosystem. Unfortunately, the Alexa app is painful and I’d love to be able to control my home with the home app/control panel on my iPhone. Is this possible without getting rid of all my Alexa devices?

Alexa devices:

  • Echo Show 15
  • Echo Gen 2
  • Echo Dot Clock
  • Echo Dot

Smart devices:

  • Phillips hue behind TV
  • Roku Ultra
  • Hisense Roku TV
  • Hubspace LED Light Strips
  • Assorted Cync Bulbs
  • 2 Govee Floor Lamps
  • Roomba J7+
  • Smart Plugs
  • Ring Doorbell
  • Ecobee Premium Thermostat

All of these are connected to Alexa via individual Skills. I know not all of these devices are HomeKit devices, so I’ll need something like HomeAssistant, but is it even possible to operate these devices from Alexa voice devices as well as the Home app? Is there a better option I’m not seeing?

Smart Lock for Deadbolt and Latch Doors

Hey all. I am looking for a smart lock for my front door and garage door. Front door has a deadbolt and knob lock but going to replace the knock to a regular one. The garage door is just a knob lock with no deadbolt.

I’d like to get two locks that are on the same system if possible to have one app/company to work with.

Looking for:

  • WiFi to control remotely
  • Keypad
  • Physical key access
  • Auto lock
  • Approach unlock - we have 3 kid and often full hands
  • Fingerprint would be nice
  • Works with HomeKit

I’ve looked at these combos:

  • Yale Assure Lock 2 & Assure Lever Lock: appears to have all features I want but reviews on lever lock don’t look great

  • UTech U-Bolt Pro & ULTRALOQ Latch 5: appears to have most features but latch doesn’t appear to have approach unlock.

  • Aqara U100 & U300: not familiar with this brand or reliability. Doesn’t appear to have approach unlock. Can’t tell if it had remote phone access and not sure if I need a hub?

Open to suggestions or if you have experience with any of the above!

Need a recommendation for a budget smart MR16 / GU5.3 lightbulb

Hey everyone, I'm looking for a smart lightbulb in the MR16 / GU5.3 form factor, there is a possibility of me splicing a GU10 connector as i have the space for them, but would prefer to look around first. My current bulbs are powered by 220-240V. I'm looking for the following features;

Being able to set a schedule for the lights to turn on at certain times, preferably being able to choose a color for them to use when turned on.
Don't really care about RGB, would appreciate being able to change from cool to warm white light.

Aqara Hub M3 - IR Blaster

If I setup the M3 as an IR blaster for my non smart devices, will they be controllable/exposed in HomeKit as individual devices or can I only control them from the Aqara app? If anyone has an example/screenshot of what this looks like, that would be awesome.

*I haven’t yet purchased the M3, I want to be sure this scenario is possible first. TIA

Duplicate Devices Showing in Home App After Firmware Update - HELP

I just sent the below email to Sterling customer support:

"Hi. Last night I logged into my Sterling Home app on my iPhone and agreed to all outstanding updates that were pending for the Sterling Hub and, as of last night, it is now running firmware version 2024.45.

This afternoon I went into my Home app on my iPhone and noticed duplicate devices appearing under the "Basement" room. Prior to updating the Sterling Home hub firmware last night, my Home app had all my devices organized by room but, now, there are all these duplicate devices showing (i.e. smart plugs, smart light switches, locks, etc.) showing both in their correct room assignments, but also under the "Basement" room as well.

I've noticed that the duplicate devices when I go to "Accessory Settings" for them within the Home app read at the top "This accessory has not been certified to work with Homekit so some features may not be available," while the original devices (in their correct room groupings) do NOT show that message.

I do not see anyway of deleting these duplicate devices that have just randomly appeared as of the aforementioned updating and it's made the "Basement" room in my Home app a garbled mess of devices. I have made no changes to anything else related to my smart home outside of updating the Sterling Home hub firmware, so I'm lead to believe that doing so caused this issue and I'm hoping you have a solution to resolve it that doesn't require starting from scratch with my Home app and all the devices within it."

I'm also posting this here to see if anyone else has experienced a similar issue and how you were able to resolve it. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Remote switch for Meross plugs

I am about to buy the Meross outdoor plug and while I know I can control it from HomeKit is there a switch like the one Hue have that would allow a guest turn on and off the lights. Ideally something we could attach to the wall.

Homekit integration

Hi all, îm very new to homekit and i just bought a switchhub 2 to be able to connect all my device through matter and access it through HomeKit but i'm suprise that it doesn't include all the integration (specially the IR blasting) on the home app even through matter, i was wondering if it is this bad in general, it is getting better with the next matter 1.4?

I'm already considering moving to home assistant but i don't know which powerfull enough hub to take?

Leviton Decora 2nd gen firmware updates to 1.6.6

I noticed this morning when the Leviton app updated that there was also a firmware update available from 1.6.4 to 1.6.6. I haven’t updated yet though as the Leviton firmware release notes page isn’t updated yet. But just reminding those who have any Leviton Decora 2nd gen devices that there is a firmware update available again (the first in 8 months I think).

Homekit's Matter/Thread broken with tvOS 18.2 Public Beta 2?

I have multiple Onvis S4 Matter/Thread outlets connected to an AppleTV 4K running 18.2 [22K5138e]. They ALL became unresponsive overnight.

I supposed this is a tvOS bug... Is anyone else seeing this?

Home security system

Hi guys,

I was decided to get an Abode at the end of this month to avail any Black Friday discounts.

One of the features that I was going to use is the 24/7 monitoring on demand, unfortunately I just checked with them and they don’t support monitoring for Ireland.

So now I’m not sure on which system to go for.

I really need it to be connected to HomeKit, so I thought about either Abode or Ring through homebridge.

Which one would you recommend and why?

Also, if you have any other suggestions I would love to hear it.

Thanks a million.

Aqara Worries - Paid Cloud Services

I bought into Arlo when they had free cloud storage and offline features. Almost immediately they were driving customers to paid subscriptions. Apparently they weren’t converting enough users and started end of life-ing products and deprioritizing bugs associated with offline features.

Well enough is enough and I switched to Aqara because they support HKSV and I already need to have the Apple One subscription. I get constant emails and ads in app to sign up for the cloud services. It worries me that they will head down the same dark path Arlo did.

Any thoughts on this? Will it be the same business model as Arlo? Or can they make it work with just camera sales?

Central Heating system for underfloor installation using Homekit or Matter

If I am not wrong this product I need DOES NOT EXIST. Let me explain briefly:

I have a normal underfloor installation with 6 areas of heating (rooms). Do not know why but the constructor did not wire every room, and they simply installed ONE wired thermostat that fires all 6 valves together. I want to improve it giving individual rooms the possibility to warm up differently.

Nowadays I have a Nest Thermostat that control my actual system (the boiler, the thermostat and the valves all together).

I tried to install some valve heads (the Aqara Radiaton Thermostats E1) but they do not fit between the spaces. My idea was to connect them to individual wireless thermostats (Aqara ones also) so that they would open and close the valves.

As it was not possible, I thought of using like a Homekit (or matter) central system that would control my 6 areas wired to the 6 regular non-homekit valves. Something similar to my B-Hyve irrigation system for watering the different areas of my garden... Ok? well... I have not find it. Not in Aqara, not in meross,... nothing. My idea is to connect simple Homekit wireless thermostats (Aqara as example) to that Homekit/matter central heating station and to the corresponding area/valve.

Please let me know, or at least tell me if it is something in the roadmap of any major brand. OR if I am missing something and I could proceed in a different way.

Thanks,

Home kit inquiries

Hi, I understand that we can use shortcuts to turn on HomeKit . For instance alarm ring> turn on light.

However, can we do alarm ring ( base on location) > turn on light?

So that when the alarm ring when I’m at work, my house light will not turn on .

Thanks in advance !

Apple Watch/Siri triggers for HomeKit

I have several devices that are connected to HomeKit. When I trigger commands using Siri from my phone, everything works like it should. However, when I try to trigger using my watch, I get an error "it looks like you haven't setup any HomeKit accessories".

There is no HomeKit app on my watch. What can I do to get this to work? I would really like to not have to pull my phone from my pocket, especially when I am trying to close the garage door and I'm holding my kiddo (for example).

I appreciate the help.

One Switch with 6 flood lights

I have one switch that controls 6 flood lights all the way around the perimeter of the house. I would like to find a way to not turn on all the lights at once. For instance, I would like to be able to just turn on the back lights, or just turn on the front lights etc.

Is this how the Lutron Caseta could help? I just briefly learned about the Caseta, but hoping you guys can help me out with more of an understanding for this particular issue. Thank you very much!

Aqara matter contact sensor reporting but automations failing.

I just got an Aqara matter supported contact sensor today and paired it with ease to my home kit home (Apple tv is my hub but have multiple standby hubs and many other devices). The sensor shows up and reflects “open” and “closed” properly. I have a very basic automation (if contact is open, turn on light) and that automation fails every time. Again the home app shows the contact opening and closing but the light doesn’t turn off/on. I can turn the light on manually with the app. I have tried with multiple light (target devices) and it fails on all of them. Can anyone offer thoughts?

HSV Detects Babies as Animals…

I have recently set up an Aqara Hub G3 in our nursery making use of HSV. I had set motion notifications for animals in case there is any chance one of our cats gets shut in the room without us noticing. Strangely what I have found is that any time one of my twins stir it triggers an animal detected notification! Has any one else had this happen to them?

Aqara Doorbell - Security / Private Setup

Hi all,

I'd like to install my Aqara G4 Doorbell so that no video is transmitted back to the manufacturer. Is there a way to make it so the only possible way for anyone to view the feed is by accessing it from my Apple Home app?

Outdoor secure video cameras

Hello, is there a decent price outdoor camera that supports HomeKit and preferably secure video?

I have seen Aqara is bringing one out , but it is not available yet from my research.

Any suggestions would be nice, just not got the budget to spend like $ 300, $ 400 on the item sadly.

Thank you

Help with HomeKit Automation – Conditional Logic for Lights Not Working

I’m trying to set up a HomeKit automation with the following logic:

  1. Lights should turn on when motion is detected.
  2. Lights should stay on if certain other lights are turned on.
  3. Lights should turn off after no motion is detected for 1 minute and when those other lights are also off.

I’ve been trying to set this up using the Eve app using rules but haven’t been able to get it to work as expected.

The Issue:
The lights turn on when motion is detected and turn off when no motion is detected as expected. However, if the conditional lights are turned on, the lights stay on as expected. The problem occurs when the conditional lights are then turned off—despite no motion being detected and the conditional lights being off, the lights remain on and do not turn off as intended.

Question:
Has anyone encountered similar challenges with HomeKit automations involving motion sensors and conditional logic? Specifically, how can I ensure that lights turn off as expected when no motion is detected and all conditional lights are off? Any advice or workarounds would be much appreciated!

I have to make two scenes for one thing

Because Siri/HomeKit kept asking me what room I mean if I wanted to turn off a light, even though the light all have distinctive names, I had to turn the whole home into one artificial “room.” Now, if I wanted to turn all lights in the actual living room on, I had to turn to Scenes. But there is can’t just turn the scene on and off, I can only turn it on. So for the living loom lights to get turned off I have to create a scene called “living room lights off” that is on to them being off. Logical right? And all just because Siri kept asking me what room I mean when I told it to “turn the couch lights on”. It’s a home with only three rooms and 4 lights.

Smart light switches, multiple switches and two-way switches

Hi all,

Looking for recommendations for HomeKit accessible smart switches that will fit my setup. Moved into a new place and the living room lights are on a 4-gang light switch (double width) and there is another 3 gang switch that controls some separate lights but also has some two way switches on it too. There are also two way switches in the hall I’d be interested in swapping out as well. I’ve seen options for 2 switches (like the Aqara H1) but nothing for 3 or 4.

I’m also in the UK so believe I would need a switch without a neutral wire. Any recommendations for tackling this would be great!

Ecobee Thermostat and Meross Garage Door Opener Not Working

Has anyone experienced a problem like this before? My HomePod appears to have upgraded to version 18.1 (22J580) and I’m guessing ever since the devices noted in the title are failing to connect to the HomePod. I can communicate with each device with their native apps so I’m pretty sure HomeKit is the issue. I’ve tried a hard cycle on the HomePod power and also restarting from the Home app to no avail. Periodically in the Home app it will show that I need to update to version 18.1, which is already on it and if I try to anyways it fails. Am I left with no option but to fully reset the HomePod and starting over. I appreciate any and all advice!
