Hello all. I'll keep this short. Ive dj'd for 15 years and I've done pretty much every kind of gig tou can think of in that time. I currently hold weekly residences at a few bars in my city playing disco/funk and dance and i also produce my own music which veers into electronic and sometimes guitar stuff too. My question is, how do i market myself if what i play, what i want to play and what i produce is all over the place in terms of genres?
I don't want to JUST make and be known as a disco DJ for example but I'd still play that kind of stuff.
Is there any examples of DJs that really play across the board? Not so much multi genre "party" djs but more cooler and underground. Think Giles Peterson etc.
Just some late night post gig rambling so apologies if I'm nit not completely clear here.
I dj as a hobby, currently bedroom djing as I no longer enjoy nightlife as much.
I have the opportunity to go to a production, dj workshop and networking event.
However, I don’t want to dj as a full time job, but I would love to learn to produce one day (my main reason for wanting to go).
I can’t figure out if going is a waste (will have to find accommodation in London for a few days, im no longer a raver, sober living, currently studying and not working), or if I will regret not doing it.
Has anyone been in a similar situation before? Thanks.
Hi,
So I've dug out some pretty old gear I have as want to just have a mess around but I can't seem to get the controller working with the laptop/software.
I've downloaded the S4 driver but no luck. It comes up with an audio output in Traktor of Traktor Kontrol s4 but says its not connected although the USB is.
I realise this is old gear and I'm planning to upgrade but wanted to have a play around before I dropped the cash.
To be honest if someone can give me confidence that upgrading to Traktor Pro 4 will solve my issue I'm happy to drop the money on that but any help would be so welcome.
Traktor Kontrol s4 mk1 / Traktor Pro 2 / Win 11 / AMD Ryzen 5700 / 16GB Ram

Would love any thoughts / feedback!
Hi all - currently mix with two sl1200s and a djm850
Looking to upgrade my mixer and speakers soon (currently use DM40s which I’ve grown old of)
First things first though, I really need to improve audio quality.
Currently using two very old Ortofon Concorde Pro S cartridge/stylus combos.
Question is this: upgrade to Mix/Club cartridges or just buy two new Pro S styli to replace the current ones?
Are there any big differences if sound between the two in your opinions?
Thanks in advance for any help you can give :)
I do not scratch. I play mostly deep house, techno, tech house, breaks
Hey there. Not a DJ though I tried to learn some basic concepts while younger.
I got extremely bad tinnitus after one night show were the bass were INSANELY loud. It was my first concert ever and I wore ear protection of course. The sound engineer kept telling me they did not exceed 102 dB A which would be something like 80-90 dB at 10 meters. I don't know what to think other than that is probably a blatant lie.
Music in clubs are quite loud, generally about 100 dB I would guess and I have always felt comfortable with earplugs. It was not the case here so I can believe they maxed it at 102 dB, any thoughts here ? Maybe low freq sounds are more damaging I don't know but seems crazy.
My other question is just simply how it's possible to be in this industry while staying healthing as it only took me one concert to be completely fucked.
How are you managing? I never listened to loud music before, went < 10 times clubbing in my whole life. Sometimes I just don't know why DJ feel the needs to push over the limits. It can be life altering, really.
I have come to the conclusion that I need to add a second 18 inch powered sub to my PA setup and want to ask fellow DJs out there if they think this will cause any sound issues. Here is what I have for equipment: 2 Mackie SRM215 monitors, 1 Mackie Thump 118S powered Sub, and DBX driverack PA2. The Mackie monitors are great and go really loud with awesome sound, however the sub is lacking to keep up when doing house, dnb, and other mix shows. I am considering adding a new Mackie DRM 18S powered sub to the setup and using it in combination with the Thump 118S. I don't have enough budget to buy 2 of the DRM 18S powered subs right now, so I am considering this option for a temporary solution for an upcoming show. I've already shopped other new subs and for the price point, sound and reviews I'm pretty set on the Mackie DRM 18S. Eventually I'll change out the Thump when I can afford to do so with another Mackie DRM 18S. In meantime, do you foresee any competing sound issues in this temporary solution?
So the dreaded Tidal DJ extension finally caught up with me after I bought a new controller - but shit is acting weird.
Can't load up Tidal at all within Serato and everytime I login I get taken to the subscription page. I add the DJ extension to my account, hit 'CONFIRM' and the button briefly turns green before going black again. So the Tidal extension is never actually added to my account.
Is this extension limited to some markets or can any other Aussies get in and add it to their software?
My cousin is getting married in about a year and wants me to DJ his wedding. Short back story, he lives 5 hours away from me but we found out we both have been producing music about 7 years ago or so and we visit eachother a handful of times a year. We're about as close as we can be living across state, and we always were tight as little kids when our families would visit.
Anyways, I got into DJing a little less than a year ago and just did my first wedding last weekend. It went super well and I'm eager to do more but I'm not sure about doing a family wedding.
The pros:
It could be my wedding gift, I feel like I've heard of DJs doing that for their friends/family. If he feels he has to pay me something (likely) then I would accept, but likely wouldn't charge full rate.
Me and him have bonded over music a lot, it feels appropriate for me to be in charge of music for the night.
I know what him and his fiance like and what a lot of the guests would be into since I grew up with most of them.
Cons:
It's a long drive to make with all my gear. My car is packed when it's all loaded up.
I wouldn't drive all the way out there ahead of time to check out the venue and see what all I need to bring. I'd have to rely on photos/FaceTime calls
There will be a lot of family there, including my siblings, that I only get to see a few times a year. It'd be nice to hang out with everyone and just enjoy the night. I had a lot of fun at the wedding I just worked but it was just that, work.
TLDR: Cousing wants me to DJ his wedding next year 5 hours away. I'm really up in the air but don't want to make him wait too long for an answer. He said he'd be totally understanding if I don't want to
UPDATE: I talked to my cousin and he's cool with me mingling during cocktail hour and dinner, as well as having a prerecorded set if I want to take a break and go hang out for a bit. I'll still treat it with the same profesionalism as any other gig but it'll be a lot more lax. Thanks for all the advice y'all
Was just asked if i could play some music for a friend overseas hes hosting a halloween party. I have no controller, so i want to just play off my laptop.
Setup:
Macbook M2 Pro with Traktor Pro 3 running, headphones connected via 3.5mm.
All I want to do is output to headphones and out to OBS at the same time
Soundflower doesnt want to install on new macs, so I installed Blackhole which is similar.
I made an Aggregate Device with Headphones + Blackhole2Ch both enabled on it.
I put Traktor's output setting to the Aggregate Device.
On OBS, ive tried getting audio from both Aggregate device and from Blackhole2Ch but nadda.
What am i doing wrong?
Thanks in advance
Hello DJs. We hired a DJ through a DJ company. When we started we said we wanted to play Latin music. The DJ we were assigned does not know Spanish. We made a playlist for them with like 5 hours worth of music.
How do y’all handle playing music in a language you don’t know? I am slightly worried but not sure if should be or this is normal.
If you’re using only two decks, I feel like it would be more natural to use the inside decks as they are closer to the mixer. Maybe I can learn from this if there are specific advantages to using the outside decks exclusively.
So my dad is 78 years old and has always raved to me about how much cooler the old school strobe lights were in the 70's versus today's strobes. He said the old ones could flash over 100 times per second which would "freeze time". He said they would turn on the shower and turn up the strobe in the bathroom which would eventually cause the water droplets to freeze/stop in place. They would touch the frozen water droplets and they would explode in place. He said it was truly amazing to see.
He said today's strobe lights had to be turned down due to epilepsy/seizure reasons and are now factory-limited to only flash 10-12 times per second which does not yield the same results.
He said the strobe light he had was called Psycho Strobe. I've tried searching for one on eBay but cannot find one for sale. Although searching Google, I can see the one I am looking for.
Just curious if anyone has one or has played around with one. Would really love to get my hands on one!
Been a dj for like 18 years,i'm peaking right now but i'm heavy booked and tired, depressed, annoyed by anything easily, last saturday i almost dropped of my feet because of sleep schedule/lots of fast-food cause no time to cook,etc... I'm having more than i need but i just need some motivation to scale it up back and regen through all this growing process.
3 residencies & 2 huge parties in my city, now i'm booked around the country, having around 15-20 gigs per month.
Any advices for physically and mentally improving to actually having back my energy and motivation ? I'm 1.76 meters,67 kg and can't get more kilos as far as i tried, good genes i think.
Hi! I love physical media and that includes magazines. I read the news and keep up with current events online but I miss magazines. Are there any trade publications you guys enjoy that I can subscribe to and receive physical copies?
Not DJ Mag for obvious reasons lol
Hey all! Normally, when I publish my DJ mixes that I record on my Denon SC Live 4, I load them into Ableton, do some voiceovers, and bounce it. After about a year of doing this, I've become more curious on common effects that could be used to improve the overall sound of the mix as I can hear differences between my own bounced audio and more professionally done shows.
Any common tips or tricks to do on a mix in post-production before exporting?
I have an XDJ-RX2, but got a gig at a wedding coming up and they said i need the driver for an XDJ-XZ. I thought all rekordbox was compatible? I'm using my USB that i always use
I have been reading and hearing mixed experiences about latency in JBL Partybox speakers when connected to a DJ controller (through aux cable, duh). Some swear that they haven't experienced latency, some swear they do. Just the other day, I heard from someone that in many events organized in my town, DJs use partyboxes with no delay.
I found consistently that with stuff like Boombox 3, you will get latency issues with aux, but when it comes to Partybox, there have been different answers. What could be going on here?
Example of partybox 310 with claims of no latency:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9P7wJFdWzQ
Example of partybox 1000 with claims of latency:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5AAsUqFEz4k
A previous thread with a few conflicting claims:
https://www.reddit.com/r/DJs/comments/121je4y/jbl_partybox_300s_slight_delay_fix/
Another one:
https://www.reddit.com/r/DJs/comments/k1rrmj/any_experience_djing_with_a_jbl_partybox/
So I want to clear out this mixed kind of situation and hope that you people could help me figure this thing out. So, anyone with experience of using Partybox with a controller and aux, can you vouch for this, or should I just get "proper" gear and forget about the dream of an all in one portable thing that I could drag around?
Last time i had troubles cuz the cdj couldn’t read my usb, although it worked on a standalone the week before i deleted my usb and formatted it again to FAT32 is there anyway i can check for sure?
I'm looking for a quick way of stream/downloading new music and set cues on the go through my android device so I can import it into rekordbox later and smoothly work with my controller.
So I normally just DJ underground parties and my own forest parties within my own circle etc.
Recently I was playing an event and a promoter for larger events was present.
They approached me and asked me to send in a mix to be considered for an upcoming event supporting a DJ I love.
I didn't take it too seriously really, went home and just pumped out 6 songs into a 10 minute mix. (Way faster than my normal mixes) Happy with all the song selections and the transitions were all clean, the mix was actually pretty fun and high energy and flowed well. I enjoyed doing it.
Sent that in. I figured it contained enough info about my skill level and the type of music I thought would be good for that event without wasting everyone's time with a 1 hour mix.
Especially if they have to sit through a lot of mix's when deciding who to pick.
And I did mention that to them in the message. Which the response to that seemed positive.
But now I am wondering what do most people do. Is that enough, is that too lazy.
Either way I think I'll get away with it this time around because I got along well with the promotor and I think we were on the same page about this.
But I am just wondering, What does everyone else do when sending in submissions.
Or better yet any promotors out there that can say what they would prefer
Looking at upgrading from a 2-channel controller with limited capabilities. I'm bouncing between the Pioneer XDJ-XZ (4-channel standalone at $2500) and the DDJ-FLX10 (4-channel controller at $1500).
I play events and record mixes. The places I'll be taking this thing, there are no CDJs, and I'm not a fan of modular setups. $1000 is a huge price difference, but I'm hoping this will be my final controller for years to come. Was also looking at grabbing a Raspberry Pi and a mini screen and running Mixxx with the FLX10, just in case that price barrier proves insurmountable.
Please help me decide!
Hey, I am an oldschool DJ who was mainly active in the 90s and early 00s. My vintage set up: 2 × 1210s and a Vestax PMC-37 Pro...and an even older Denon dual DJ CD player. I used to complete this by a DVS solution called Torq for my huge digitized CD collection, but it is no longer working. What is the best solution to complete my set up for mixing also digital music from my hard disk drives? Ideally something I can combine with my turntables and mixer. I am a bit overwhelmed by all the stuff thats out there at the moment from hardware to software. Thanks in advance.
Hi all,
I store all my music on an external hard drive, currently a 5TB WD HHD
https://www.reddit.com/r/datarecovery/comments/17moozh/wd_hard_drive_recovery/
I also have 2x 5TB Lacie Hard Drives that I use to back up my Macbook Pro M2 as well as all my Rekordbox related files / data.
My 5TB WD HHD takes about 10-30 minutes to load when I plug it into my Macbook (load = showing up on the sidebar). The Lacie is instant.
Does anyone have any strong recommendations on where to store all of their music on an external hard drive?
I'm looking for a fast, reliable external. The reason I don't use my laptop is because I don't have enough storage on there and it's easier to protect my HD
So it's not just an add your email to a mailing list, but also a follow x Social media to continue? Maybe even with a free ticket pdf at the end?
