We DJ any and everywhere, from the largest venues to the smallest private events. The party goes where we go!
Feel free to discuss sound, lighting, event ideas, new ways of attracting clients ... ANYTHING related to working in the event business. No one is here to judge anyone else about how we do our jobs; this is how we make a living!

Do you do it by percentage or flat rate? Does it vary by event type, how far in advance the booking is, or other factors? Curious to hear how ppl are handling this. Thanks!
I’ve had J8s for about 7 months. They’re great. I love em. I’d love to put a sub under my booth just to give a little more oomph…
Thing is tho, is that even worth it? Will it mess with the overall sound projection?
Here’s the other thing… with all my gear I bring to a gig, I don’t think I could fit an 18 in my car. Plus I live on 2nd floor, so nah.
So is adding a 12 or 15 sub even a good idea and if so, what would be a good reccomendation? Obviously I’m partial to RCF
I've received a lot of feedback after a new year's party last year that the sound could have been better. People specifically mentioned the bass, and encouraged me to find another subwoofer solution for this year. This is the room:
I have a 12" sub available to me (the box pro Achat 112 Sub A). Would I be better getting another one exactly like it, putting one on each side of the stage, or bringing something like an 18" sub?
I realize the community is called mobiledj, but transport is not an issue in this case.
Which standalone DMX controller do you prefer? Will be using an XDJ-AZ via line output to the DMX controller and no computer.
Hi, I’ve been buying disco balls from various sizes since for my weddings sometimes couple want me to hang some on the room if possible. I found out when I bought the first ones, that there are the 10mm mirror standard ones, and the 5mm ‘professional ones’ (pretty more expensive). I started buying 5mm and now I have a 10/15 ball set of different sizes, but I’m starting to think that maybe 10mm look better when hanging a lot of them in the same spot. Is it just me? I feel like 10mm with bigger mirror delivers more the ‘disco’ effect, even with thicker beams when aimed with a beam and so…
Any thoughts? Thanks.
Is there any way I could control my 1500w low lying fog machine with dmx without wiring and coding?
looking for a controller of sorts to fit my manual dmx board.
(it doesn't have a dmx controller that goes with it )
Without getting into a debate on whether or not one should use wireless vs. wired or lavalier vs. headset vs. handheld, suppose that I wish to purchase a decent wireless lavalier microphone system. The application would be to mic an officiant at a wedding.
Starting up a small corporate party dj business. Any suggestions on lighting effects. Just a few things to make it look more fun. Portable, reliable and well made.
I own a single WashFX2 but it doesn't have the new Master/Slave2 mirror function of the Hex unit.
I don't care about Amber/White so buying 2 units for just that feature feels excessive.
I was hoping I could set the WashFX2 to Master and the Hex to Slave2 allowing the hex to mirror the FX2(which would also keep the hex from using its white/amber lights in sound active).
I ordered some hosa but they have taken months to come in. Are digiflex hxx series a okay substitute? Any other recommendations when buying xlr cables?
Hi everybody I am looking to invest in some new PA speakers. Don’t need any mixers, controllers, cables etc. I am a 30 year veteran DJ. I’ve played in clubs, raves, festivals, small to medium weeding, corporate events, elementary school parties and birthdays. I’ve always rented, borrowed or used my business partners audio equipment. I need to purchase my own as I’ll be doing this solo. This is a side hustle and only do about 20 events a year. No trailer or van so somewhat portable is preferable. I’ve got a Subaru Forester to load up into and will be the only one loading and unloading. I’ve lifted QSC 118 subs alone but damn, I’m old:) What would y’all go for? Was thinking 2 QSC 12.2 and a QSC 118 Sub to start. Thoughts or suggestions?
Anyone try em out yet? Any good?
Prolly can’t run em off your computer USB can ya? Or you gotta buy like a little portable battery like an Anker or something?
I'm just starting out and still getting my bearings, so please forgive a newbie question.
I know DJs get a lot of their music from DJ Pools or signing up to services like BPMSupreme. My question is: a lot of this is modern, dance, and hip-hop. But wedding DJs are going to have a whole gamut of genres, some of which are more old school.
A wedding DJ is obviously going to have a lot of requests at a wedding, and people aren't going to understand "I don't have that song."
Obviously, a lot of old school songs don't have great MP3s, which means ripping, which is something most DJs don't suggest.
So my main Q: how do I build up a versatile pool of music for weddings? Do you have any DJ pool recommendations, or am I off base here? Do I have to download all my own at great expense?
So far, I've gotten some help, for example, /u/WizBiz92 kindly responded this:
Absolutely, record pools are a major boon for a wedding DJ! Most have redrums and "dj friendly" edits of all the classics youll need, and even specifically curated playlists for not just weddings but different sections of the wedding, and in particular styles. I used BPM Supreme in the past and really liked them, and am currently on Heavy Hits and highly recommend them as well. Paying a monthly subscription for unlimited downloads is BY FAR the most cost effective way I've found to get everything I need. They won't have everything, but grabbing those niche one-offs individually isn't too much of a hassle.
Another thing I have and highly recommend is a compilation called Power Tracks that includes every Billboard #1 going back decades. I've got songs and artists I don't even know I have, but 9 times out of 10 if a wedding guest asks for a song that was a hit at some point it's in my library already
And /u/Spectre_Loudy referred me to /r/mobiledj rather than /r/djs, saying:
Also, use Direct Music Service or ZipDJ.
Shout out to them!
Anyone using this? I see the usecase more in line with podcasters, dawless jams, and studio use, but feature-wise it seems like something that would work well for mobile gigs.
I'm looking to downsize my setup a bit from my ancient Soundcraft EPM6 - plus looking to get some more modern digital features in there.
My usecase is pretty straightfoward - no more than 2 mics, and I don't really need more than 2 sets of stereo inputs (DJ setup + backup audio source) and maybe a line/inst level input or two in case there's some live musicians (talking singer/guitar type setup) that need to pipe through my system. It's got aux sends and seperate main and headphone outs (which i can use as a booth out) which is useful as well.
I also have this idea of bringing my MPC to bigger gigs and plugging that into the L6 via usb and using that for digital processing (compression, sidechain, room EQ, etc) since most higher-end digital mixers with those features are huge and much pricier (and way overkill for a mobile dj).
My biggest concerns is the size of the knob for managing mics but that could be mitigate by bringing a midi controller (the L6 is midi mappable) and the menu diving that comes with the small format, but i doubt i'd be tweaking too much in realtime.
I was also leaning towards a Presonus AR8c as well which is a bit bigger and offers more dedicated controls - but can still work with the MPC if i need that, but the L6 form factor and the flexibility of battery power is enticing for things like outdoor ceremonies, plus it could replace my Roland GO:Mixer for outdoor streams and dawless jam sessions.
L8 would be the perfect form factor, except it can't run off external power in class-compliant mode - which I need for MPC compatibility.
Hello guys,
a slight background, im coming from controller setup and want to upgrade to xdj 700 + allen & heath mixer and would really need opinion. Since I don’t have infinity budget my current picks are used Xone 42 and xone43c and new xone 43. Since im moving away from laptop and discovered that you can record mixes through REC out, my first pick is xone43. But want to hear what you guys think.
Thank you all in advance!
I have a cameo thunder wash 600 w. I am trying to run it through dmx and am getting nowhere with the cameo control 54 box. Is there anyone who can help with directing me to a hardware dmx controller for this light? The light can run on 1,2,3,5,7 channels…but according to google, the address must be set from 86-93…here’s where my problem arises as i can’t use control 54 because the addy only goes up to 80 in manual mode.
TLDR: has anyone used a cameo thunderwash 600 W with dmx controller? Help would be much appreciated.
Hello everyone, I hope you're all keeping well.
I recently bought this system above. I'm mostly using it for Wedding DJ gigs for up to 200 people. I was misled by online reviews and the shop I bought them from. This setup really struggles anywhere near max volume. There just isn't enough juice and the tops especially start to sound really bad at high volume. I'm basically maxing them out every gig, tuning them as well as I can with the EQ presets and two band EQ. The sub sounds fine but just too light weight basically.
The tops are good stage monitors and decent for small parties (100 people) but once they get loud, the sound quality suffers.
So, I'm going to change the system but will need to do it incrementally due to cost issues. I want to buy a system I won't need to change again for many years.
I'd like to ask some questions to the community if I may, thank you in advance for any help on this.
For the sake of discussion, I'm considering the RCF ART 915 AX + 15" or 18" AX Sub
Should I swap the bin or the tops first? Would two high quality 12"s or 10"s sound better on the db bin than the two EV tops on a new bin? Obviously a new bigger bin would mean I could turn down the tops a bit and use the crossover.
Combos. I am inclined to go with 12" tops and an 18" bin. However, I see people swearing by 10" tops and 18" bin or 15" bin. Do 12" tops on 18" bin win all day long or is it over kill for 200? (only going with x1 bin by the way).
Ideal case scenario I can replace either the tops now or the bin and rock away for another while until I've the money for the next purchase.
It would also be ideal if I can get a banging system with 12" tops and 15" bin. Even better 10" tops. Carrying gear is a pain in the back.
Thanks for your time,
C
Hey everyone,
I’ve been DJing for over 10 years and pride myself on staying professional, but I had a rough experience during a recent gig that really shook me. I’m hoping for some advice or similar experiences from this group to figure out how to handle these situations better in the future.
What Happened:
Early in the night, a customer (clearly intoxicated) started making repeated song requests. I accommodated a couple of them, but when I didn’t have one, they got pushy, asking, "Will I annoy you if I keep coming up?" I tried to stay friendly and professional but gave a lighthearted "probably."
Things escalated when she began insulting me, saying DJs in her town were "WAY better" than me and gesturing to show I was "down here" while they were "up there." I shrugged it off at first, but it was frustrating to be demeaned for doing my job.
Disrespectful comment;
She then stated, "I am a Doctor/Lawyer or something and you’re JUST a DJ," which felt unnecessarily rude and demeaning. She did the hand gesture to show how high up she was and how low down, we are.
The Turning Point:
Later in the night, as I was packing down and finished playing, one of her group tried to enter the DJ booth, where my gear was still set up. I calmly put my hand out to stop her and lightly touched her arm to prevent access, which she overreacted to by accusing me of "pushing her."
By this point, I’d had enough. As I walked out, I made a throwaway comment about their behavior, which I immediately regretted, but it was a result of the persistent abuse I faced throughout the night.
The Aftermath:
They made a complaint about me, and now I’m worried it might escalate further. Thankfully, there’s CCTV that should back up my account, but I can’t help but feel like I could have handled this better.
My Questions for You:
How do you deal with difficult or abusive customers during gigs?
Has anyone dealt with similar situations, and how did you resolve it?
What’s your advice for staying calm under constant provocation?
I’m sharing this because it was one of the few times I really struggled to keep my cool, and I’d love to hear how others navigate these challenges.
Thanks for reading, and I appreciate any insights!
I recently got back into DJing after years away from the spotlight. I have experience as a club DJ, where I never MC’ed. I got a my first gig tomorrow and I am very nervous because I am going to have to MC the event. The client knows It’s my first time and I am only charging $300 to do it… but man Am i nervous to be honest. I have shadowed other djs before in private events but shadowing and doing it is different. I have been practicing what to say for about a week with my wife and my friends. And getting the pace down and the playing the correct songs in the correct order…. And I an very nervous. Can someone share some insight as to what to do to relax and execute it good? My wife said I was shaking the first time I practiced in front of her. I don’t do drugs or drink. Thank you!
Hey everyone, just wondering if any in our group has been using this mixer, Zoom Livetrack L6. Please share your experience and thoughts on this mixer. Small form factor but I’m unsure if it can perform as well as other line mixers. Thanks!
I'm looking for advice on DMX for the above. Don't want to be spending loads but also want something thats effective. Been looking at ADJ MyDMX GO or the airstream DMX bridge but I can't quite figure out what the benefits of the latter is.
Any help is really appreciated!
Hi everyone, I've been hosting free house parties in Houston with 80-200+ people on an almost monthly basis for the last ~3 years (a couple of roommates, lots of friends in different walks of life). I've slowly expanded our equipment and currently have:
I recently just got asked by a buddy to set up a party at his house so decided to do it for free to see my setup and stike times as a solo op, (and got it all in ~40 minutes with loading/unloading) and mixed for an hour and a half
I also got offered my very first corporate gig (Christmas party) and am having fears and doubts I'd never had with the parties since it would be my first paid event.
Corporate Question: I know the ZLX 15s are normally regarded as lower quality but we've never had an issue in the regular party environment, would this be an inappropriate setup for a corporate Christmas party with ~200 people?
At the same time, another buddy of mine is starting to get very serious about mixing (we normally spin tech house) and we're hoping to host some private events or renegade sets since again, we've been able to attract a good group of people to our parties over the last few years, but are nervous at the potential consequences
Our main goal is to: Make a name and improve the local scene, while using the corporate events to upgrade equipment
Renegade Question: We want to host private events, and have done the basic research of rent space, sell tickets, make it free and handle cops, etc... what resources would you recommend for insurance/finding a balance for selling without overmonetizing/other artists doing similar operations?
I got out of DJing clubs after the pandemic and have started to book 50-80 weddings a year now (crazy I know)... I started booking weddings at 1,800 but have no escalated rates to 3,500-6K an event and I'm now feeling like I'm showing up to events without the proper setup to match the rest of the vibe (furniture and florals are all on point and I'm showing up with 2 dual spot duo's and 12 uplights.)
I've got to spend a decend chunk before the end of the year to avoid taxes & to keep up with the rate of bookings, and I want to allocate a portion of that to adding a legit light setup to my aresenal...
I just bought JBL VRX line array, and a few subs... and am about to buy a transit van or a trailer pending what lighting rig i buy...
Any help would be greatly appreciated...
What matters to me is durability, speed of transport and setup / striking... and not having to mess with too much shit setting up... I know little about DMX lighting but willing to learn... I'd love to just setup the same shit every wedding and just set a "zone" of like "hey here is the dance floor... just dance your lights around this zone...
Ultimately would love to have settings I could trigger for various stuff like "dark house red lights" vs. corny ass wedidng music multi colored lights etc...
Thanks for reading. Looking forward to reading how stupid I am for even asking this but honestly have limped by on lighting and finally needing to learn wtf I'm doing... thanks in advance :)
I am djaying a country party this weekend and I need to know what are the must play songs that will get the party going.
Hi, Im Toby. As part of my school Computer Science course, I am planning to produce an application to help manage your music library as part of my course work; as it a is an issue I have ran into during my hobby DJing.
As part of my studies, I need to research existing solutions and identify the key features DJ’s need.
If you are a DJ who regularly perform sets, at any event, I would really appreciate if you could take 5 minutes to answer this survey: https://forms.office.com/r/fxkSYYM0YP
The form aims to gather basic information on your methods for organising your track library and what feature you would be looking for in a software package.
If you have any questions or advice regarding the form or the application, please feel free to discuss them in this thread. Thank you for your time and insight.
I keep hearing mixed reviews and not sure if I want to give it a shot or stick to my 1 wireless microphone?
Hello everyone, I hope you're having a good day. I've been looking for a subwoofer for around $1500 all week. I'm a DJ who plays house and techno music for events with 40 to 140 people. I have two EV ZLX 15s. Anyway, I got a deal on the EV EKX18sp for $1370. I know that in the United States this isn't much of a deal, but I'm from Mexico and audio prices here go up significantly. Anyway, you usually see the EKX18sp around $1700 here, but I've seen a lot of reviews complaining about its power and that it reaches its limit very quickly.
So... do you think I should save my money? Should I take advantage of the deal? Because other brands or models of 18inch are $2000 and goes up. Should I buy smaller subs in pairs? Is an EV EKX18sp really that bad? Do you know how long it takes to limit in 0dB and if it is enough power? Do you know of other subs models that are in the same price range? I would greatly appreciate your advice since money is a problem in this country.
Its not bad to clarify that the prices I put are the final price, here the taxes are already included.
I recently picked one of these up at a garage sale, but there was no manual. I have searched everywhere and have been unable to find a pdf. If anyone has this or has any leads where I might be able to find one, please let me know.
They have a store on Amazon, but afaik, there is no way to directly contact them. Anyone know how to do this?
