The Wheatgrass Reddit - for all things pertaining to wheatgrass

The Wheatgrass Reddit

Wheatgrass - a food prepared from the freshly sprouted first leaves of the common wheat plant. Wheatgrass differs from wheat malt in that it is served freeze-dried or fresh, while wheat malt is convectively dried. Wheatgrass is allowed to grow longer than malt. Like most plants, it contains chlorophyll, amino acids, minerals, vitamins, and enzymes. Claims about the health benefits of wheatgrass range from providing supplemental nutrition to having unique curative properties, but these claims have not been scientifically proven. It is often available in juice bars, and some consumers grow and juice wheatgrass in their homes. It is available as fresh produce, tablets, frozen juice and powder. Wheatgrass is also available commercially as a spray, cream, gel, massage lotion, and a liquid herbal supplement. Because it is extracted from wheatgrass sprouts, i.e., before the wheat seed begins to form, wheatgrass juice is gluten-free, but some recommend that those with coeliac disease avoid it due to a high risk of cross-contamination.

Any downside of growing wheat grass in aluminum foil containers?

I would say I’m getting really good harvest but everywhere I see plastic / rubber containers recommended when I look for how to grow wheatgrass. Any thoughts on using food grade aluminum containers ? I usually punch few holes in the bottom and keep it in another container without holes.

Do you like wheatgrass or barley grass better? I've been growing both for a few years now and while Barley Grass seems to be a bit sweeter, Wheatgrass is still my favorite grow. Honestly, they're kind of hard crops to get right; but i've dialed in my method! I just released a YT video about it. 🌱

How much yield can I expect per tray?

Bought some 12" × 24 " (1 feet × 2 feet) trays to grow microgreens. I'm getting extremely poor quantities (~40g per tray) of wheatgrass. How much should I expect and what can I do improve the yield?

Does wheat grass powder contain oxalates?

I have read that the juice doesn't, but the whole leaf powder does. Is this correct?

Juicing wild/native/mature-sized grasses?

Lots of grass out there and so many species. I wonder if anyone knows of any that would be safe (or not) for juicing, and also worth it.

For instance, would there be any reason not to juice leaves from a corn-stalk?

Mold....all trash now?

https://imgur.com/a/Ry9qLxR

First time growing....about 12 days since germination, no medium, just directly on tray.

Cutting away for consumption reveals spots of mold in the seeds and roots.

What to do? is the whole tray garbage now? is the grass still fine to juice?

first time growing, 4 days in, just now sprouting?

https://imgur.com/a/inprsHv

Looking for a bit of advice. At what point should I take the cover off. It's been 4 days since I soaked and then spread out on a 10x20 tray.

This was 1-cup of berries. I'm wondering if I made it too dense.

From watching videos, it seems it should have sprouted after 2 days.

What is the best way to store store bought wheatgrass?

Hi all. I’m sorry if this seems like a stupid question but what is the best way to store store bought wheat grass? I bought a couple of trays from the store and I am not sure whether I should leave it in its tray on my kitchen counter or in the fridge or whether it needs to be harvested and put in a plastic bag with damp towel in the fridge.. I’m worried it may go bad after a could of days if I don’t use it all up. Appreciate any advise. Thanks

Total Noob Question.

So, there was a period, a few decades ago (yes, decades) where I drank a shot of wheatgrass a day.

But, this was bought from a juicing shop and was, invariably expensive.

Now I am in a property where I could grow my own wheatgrass and make use of the juicer I bought a long, long time ago and barely used.

But I have a noob question;

Can you use any wheat seed?

The reason I ask is because my family are farmers and could literally fill a room with agricultural wheat. The stuff you get over the internet is £10 per kg... which is expensive. But is it special wheat seed? Or is it just the stuff my parents have in their grain dryer?

Many thanks for replies.

How to grow in tropics?

Hi wheatgrass people, I'm in South India, TN. I tried to grow wg but on the first stage it gets molded, white mold while it's coverd. Also alfalfa sprouts and other get molded... What is the way out of this?

I'm very experienced in all of this but in New york city. In this climate I can only sprout legumes. Am carrying with me my wheatgrass juicer, but no use...

Growing wheatgrass from wheat?

I want to grow wheatgrass for a biology experiment for school. I for some reason can’t figure out, is wheatgrass just grown from any wheat seeds? Is there special wheat seeds that I need to use or can I use regular wheat like the one grocery stores sell that you can grind and use as wheat flour?

Thanks in advance

Noob looking to start growing wheatgrass. Do i need lots of direct sunlight? Anyone have a nice shelf set up they'd like to share?

Hi WG community!

Fresh wg is not available in my city (that i know of) and I finally have the time to start growing wg at home. We don't have a lot of direct sunlight but wondering if indirect is ok.

Also looking for a way to hang some racks or shelves that might be nicer than the black plastic trays. If anyone has ideas i'd love to hear them.

And is it ok to sprout in glass trays as light will get in?

Thanks!
