I selected the specific line and changed the fill color but when I unselect the line it is still black. And the gap color option is grayed out.
Hi. I am generally a veteran user of InDesign. This is one thing I haven't had crop up until very recently. I'm working in the latest edition version, 20.0, completely updated as of this writing. One particular font in one file will intermittently start to show a really strange phenomenon where all of the characters change to special characters for other languages. It's only this one Google Font called Josefin Sans. The other fonts in the file are fine. I'm only using the offending font because my client required me to. Do you think it's the font, or a setting or a glitch or ??? Any advice is welcome and appreciated.
I'm a pretty decent graphic designer currently using a 27" iMac from 2017. I'm beginning to notice the "planned obsolescence" of my current model while I work in Photoshop and Illustrator. Especially with the time it takes to do certain functions. I'm thinking about investing in the new M4 iMac that comes out in 11 days. But I'm not sure I understand the new features.
• How much computer should I buy if I do print, photo illustration and some social media animation?
• What extra's do I need to expect to buy?
• Will I need a new hard drive back-up?
• What questions should I be asking the sales folks at Apple?
I've been pushing through working in InDesign 2025. Out of the gate it's was unspeakably slow. Like, I want to change careers slow.. truly miserable. I went through every suggestion I could find from users, Adobe resources, a help chat, prayers. Nothing changed, and I began to work on my acceptance for this shattering misery.
Lo and behold, I just got an update notification and installed on a prayer. It works! I click on something - anything, even text boxes - and they respond without a spinning wheel. Insane.
Anyway, big thanks to whatever kind soul out there changed something in the update.
For reference in case I'm not the only one - up to date Sequoia on a '21 M1 Pro Macbook Pro
I am using Adobe InDesign v20.0 . And when I try to create a new hyperlink for a text to add to it, the software crashes and throws the message that it stopped working.
Kindly help me with this issue :/
Forgive me if this is a very simple question but I'm new to InDesign and I'm sure I'm not doing things the proper way right now.
I just started doing paperback covers as a 3-page spread that I learned from this video. https://youtu.be/nUGNLd8LmEM?si=ZlVIWaLLEUpg9kVd
My question is how do I set up the case laminate (specifically for KDP). Where do I get the numbers for the bleed, trim, and live areas? On the KDP cover template I only see the number for the spine width and overall template size.
What is the efficient and proper way to get the cover you made for the paperback to a case laminate cover? I've been doing the case laminate the way I was doing covers before which is just one page and moving elements over but this doesn't seem like the way a professional would do it.
Thank you for your help.
Hi everyone,
I'm a graphic designer since 4 years and I realy like my passion, I'm aware about trends and new styles etc...
I'd say I'm good at brand identity, motion etc
BUT I'M SO BAD AT CREATING NICE LAYOUTS.
InDesign is my nightmare because I don't have the knowledge or the feeling of it. I'd like to experiment new ways of doing graphic design : magazine, books ...
I really love nice layout but I don't know why, everything I try is bad or doesn't fit to what I expected.
I'm asking you if you have some resources or tips or advices to enhance my ability to do nice layouts.
I know the concepts of grid, but don't know which one is the best to my projects.
This layout problem is also existing when I try to present my works, like on socials or on Keynotes.
Thanks for your answers !!!
I was trying to reset the page numbers for my document and I thought prefix was for my own reference, something went terribly wrong here . How do I completely reset all the page number settings for my document? I’m new to indesign and trying to learn . Thanks in advance!
I wanted my text frame inset spacing to be uniform at all times. According to the brand guide, the spacing of the text frame inset should always be 50% of the text size, like what was shown in the photo. At first, I always adjusted the text to 50% and used it as a basis, but it got too tiring and unprofessional. I can't always calculate it based on the text size and I was hoping for better solutions.
Is there a way that I set the spacing to 50% of the text size or should I really do it manually?
is it even possible? i don’t want to manually add the page numbers to each page but if i must, i will.
Hi all, trying to set up my indesign file for printing a booklet that I will be able to coptic stitch together. How would I set up my file to print for coptic stitch binding? I printed 2-UP saddle stitch before realizing that it would not separate into 4 signatures. What should I do?

Hi. How can I outline text in InDesign but keep effects like rules above/below and bullets?
I can work around the rules bit, by duplicating the text box on a separate layer and taking the text out, but I can't start drawing bullets in. Does anyone have any solutions?
Its been on Adobe's requested features list since 2018 by the looks of it.
is it possible to run simultaneously 2 scripts, but the 1st uses millimetres as measurement unit, yet 2nd - points?
We have computers on Windows 11 & Windows 10. Someone updated their InDesign and now files are being forced to 'convert' when opened by others and sometimes it crashes. How do we uninstall or force the computer to always open with the old version?
Is there a link that will show me how I can apply tags to the columns in a spreadsheet so that style sheets will be applied to the text in those columns so that when the exported file is imported into InDesign that the proper style sheets will be assigned? The imported text will not be in a Table, it will be regular flowing text.
Hi guys i'm designing a ebook for kindle (EPUB FEFLOWABLE) with some hyperlinks for external websites that I've added in the footnotes because i didnt know how to apply directly to the word. In the program i've already applied character style to the footnote and the numbering, and to the hyperlink settings but it's exporting with underline and blue color.
How do I make it so its black with no underine? If there's any programming/code to do please be gentle
So I know I'm behind the times. It's what I can afford.
I run a trash can Mac, maxed out with RAM, 12-cores, fast video - all the options to make it as fast as possible.
Working in InDesign CS6, I get the message "Out of Memory". I generally keep 2 or 3 files open, several pages each, but they're not overloaded with a bunch of fonts or graphics.
What am I doing wrong, or how can I fix this?
I am a design contractor for a company and I work with their files through Google Drive. I am trying to open a template and save it as a new file name but when I save the file I get an "Unable to save this file. We tried but appears to be damaged." The file name is about 50 characters. But when I name it something like Test or just half of what the file name should be it saves just fine.
I never had this issue in the past but is there a way around this? Sometimes it saves but if you try to reopen the file it says I don't have permission to open it. Unfortunately I can't name the files anything but what the client is wanting. Anyone had this problem and found a fix?
I’ve just downloaded indesign and I’ve been working on my file for several hours but now that I am trying to export it as a PDF the file it creates keeps showing up blank? Does anyone know why this would be?
So, I have been trying to export this spread, but the exported version looks different than the preview.
This is what it looks like on the preview: https://imgur.com/a/xRDTaPf
This is what it looks like after exporting: https://imgur.com/a/dHnXIKV
I know it's a nitpick and they look similar, but I was wondering if there's a way to get the exported version to look like the preview. The text is on overlay mode, and I think that's the root of the problem. If anyone knows a workaround to get the preview to look like the exported pdf, it would be greatly appreciated.
The InDesign Packaged file is here as well.

Hi all,
After five (or has it been six?) years of working on a book, that includes 300 pages of text, but also many many graphics, and many colour photos, I sent it in to the printer, who just a few days ago sent me the 'proof' that I'm to look at and agree to. Yes, I can ask for small tweaks to the text, that the printer can do at his end. But anything more than some minor changes would require me to send him updated InDesign idml, indd and pdf files (I don't know why he asks for all of these files, but he does), which he would use to make another proof for me to look at. Each time he makes and sends me (I live in a different city) a proof, it costs me $400.
I should say that I've used an Apple Studio Display, whose brightness I long ago set to about 35%. That, I should confess, is about the extent of my plan for how to make sure that the final printed version of my book will have photos and graphics that are bright enough, and not too dark. I figured that if my display is set to a lower level of brightness, then I'll make the photos brighter than I'd otherwise make them, and all will be good.
But my plan didn't work. Many of the photos and graphics in the proof are quite dark, and a few of them have a greenish hue that looks quite awful. When I expressed surprise to the printer he said that there are more variables to a display than just brightness. There are also colour modes and models, and colour profiles. I don't know how to change any of those, so I'm at a bit of a loss.
Anyway, I think I'm going to have to somehow find out how much brightness I have to add here at my end so that at his end, the printer will get the right brightness on the printed pages.
Should turn the brightness on my Studio Display down to, say, 25%, and export a page of a few test photos and graphics? I could then turn the brightness to 20% and export another page. Then 30% and export another page.
The printer in Toronto could print these test pages and send them to me. I'd choose the setting that results in the right brightness on the printed page, and re-do the brightness of all my photos and graphics accordingly.
Is this a good plan? Is there a better plan?
Thanks for any advice,
Aggravating Donut
How do I add interactive checkboxes in a table? I have a cell where I've inserted a checkbox from Wingdings as text. I'm trying to convert it to an interactive checkbox, but because it's not an object, it won't let me convert it using buttons and forms.
I work for a higher ed marketing department. I have a troublesome client that has always found a way to work around marketing and edit the design files I send to our printer.
Typically, I wouldn’t care. You want to bypass marketing and make yourself look like shit? Be my guest; but because of the scope and reach of these marketing materials I’m now forced to care. (I.e using google translate to create marketing materials in Spanish vs reaching out to native speakers on campus.)
I know I can lock adobe .pdfs, but is there a way to lock inDesign files? They’re more savvy than your average clients so it’s not as simple as locking and hiding a layer.
And yes, I have had conversations with leadership and our printer; but it still continues to happen.
When I edit my book in InDesign, the chapter title pages always get out of place and I have to readjust them. Is there a way to "link" them to the rest of the book, but not in a way that causes the text to flow into them?
I need to take the text from 900 multipage pdfs and format them in indesign to create printable booklets. Is there an automation or a faster way to do this rather than manually copy and pasting the text from every pdf? Plz help 😭
I don't understand why it does this. I have a decent computer. it happens to farsi documents as my mom is editing them. please help?
I’m creating a children’s picture book. The first page is a standalone and all following pages are spreads.H however every time I export to ePub it changes my standalone front cover to a spread, the left-hand page being blank and the right hand Page being my front cover. How do I export to ePub with my front cover is staying as a front cover and not a changing to a spread?
