entertaining the thought of moving to grand rapids

Hi everyone! I’ve been teetering on the thought of moving to Michigan and been thinking that Grand Rapids is a good spot to move to. Seeking any local advice, pros and cons, etc from someone moving from the south to Grand Rapids. All the good, bad and ugly are welcome to be said to help me decide!

thanks for looking 👁️👁️

Michigan Street Taco Bell is my 13th reason

Waited almost an hour in the drive thru and my order was completely wrong when I got home 🥸

Not a political post

I had some drinks with the boys, and I have to say this. We all need to gout for a beer or a smoke, or whatever you guys do (I do both) and small talk and dance 🕺. This political shit is insane and I just want to get sloppy drunk at Stella’s in the back room. Love you All.

Looking like major police presence Beltline & 28th.

Appeared that the giant car meet up taking place in the Centerpoint parking lots has been broken up by various police departments?

Was driving down Eastbrook when dozens of cop cars started speeding in towards the Dunhams parking lot down Eastbrook and muscle cars and whatnot began speeding out the opposite way.

Unsure if it was police breaking it up or if it was a sanctioned event and they were just there for safety. Know they have meetups there most weekends and rip donuts in the parking lots, but have never really seen police breaking them up before.

Political Texts

I swear I've blocked more numbers this year than in all my previous years of owning a cell/smartphone.

I haven't hit 1000 yet, but definitely several hundred. The last few days have been insane.

Is there any restaurants where I can get a good pot pie?

Bud and Stanley us d to have one that was ...ok. I know Family Fare/D&W and KFC have decent ones but looking for an actual sit down restaurant with a decent potpie. Doesn't necessarily have to be "Traditional".

Bookshelves

Anyone selling tall bookshelves for cheap, or know where I can get some? I checked the thrift stores around me and facebook marketplace but didn't see what I was looking for. Hoping to get 3 matching dark brown ones but not a requirement. I can pick up this weekend

Friday afternoon walk - Missed connection-ish

So, I didn’t know how else to title this, so I went old school.

Anyways, I was having an absolutely shitty week, that got even fucking worse somehow Friday afternoon. I decided the only way I could snap out of it was by finishing my work as quickly as possible, signing off, then going for a fast walk around my neighborhood with my ruck.

Long story short, it wasn’t working that well. But, while I was on Wealthy Street near Diamond, a kind looking woman wearing an awesome green overcoat made eye contact and smiled. We continued walking opposite ways. Not too long after, while I’m walking towards the weird intersection of Cherry, Lake, and Diamond, same woman is walking towards me, and as she notices me, we both smile and kind of laugh about running into each other again.
So anyways, if you are the woman with the awesome green overcoat and the lovely smile, your kindness to this stranger helped turn my day around. If this sounds like someone you know and they aren’t on Reddit, tell them thanks. :)

Country Club Recs?

My fiancé and I have never been country club people, but we were doing the math on how much we spend for our MVP gym memberships and golfing annually and it got me wondering if a country club membership makes some sense for us. We would be interested in the fitness center, pool, sauna/hot tub, golf, and hiking trails if they have any. It sounds great having everything in one place, but I’m not sold on it being the right fit for us. I’m curious to hear your thoughts. Are the perks worth the annual dues?

Advice needed (Lowell)

I grew up in Kentwood and got out of michigan as soon as I graduated from college and built a great life. 15 years later I’m hot as balls in Austin and I miss my extended family and the absolute beauty of the Great Lakes. My family is in Ada and my aunt owns many acres in Lowell bordering Fallasburg Park and will give me a few acres to build a house. Lowell was THE STICKS when I was growing up and I’m not sure if that’s changed. I have two kids, husband owns his own business that’s remote, I’m a stay home mom and do part time contract work for government agencies. Is Lowell a decent place to build and live?

Anyone Know What Happened in Highland Park This Morning?

I drove past Highland Park on College this morning (Saturday) around 10:45am and there were several Police Cars and the GRPD Forensics Van. I'm in this area a lot and was concerned to see that level of police presence with an investigative team as well. Has anyone heard what was happening? I've searched local Social Media as well as news sites, and searched Google. However, I don't see any news involving Highland Park.

The Worst McDonald’s Restaurant in GR

I came through the drive through at McDonald’s on 44th in Kentwood and ordered a chicken Big Mac. When I parked I found out it was a regular Big Mac in the box. So I came through the drive thru again and explained the error. I was apologized to and given a new bag, presumably with a chicken Big Mac in it.

When I parked, I opened the box, and it was ANOTHER regular Big Mac. This time, instead of going through the drive through I walked in. I asked for the manager and was told I was talking to him.

I explained I had received another regular Big Mac as a replacement. I said I don’t know how that can even happen. At that time an employee came in from the lobby with a bag and said, just give her this. I said what is that? He said someone in the dining room said he didn't have time to eat this. I said, IM NOT TAKING THAT ONE. I will wait to have one freshly made. Im not taking one from your dining room.

I pointed out where my car was and said Id be in that car when it was done. When I turned to leave, I heard one of the employees say I bet she voted for Trump! And then everyone laughed.

I had indeed just voted and was wearing my I voted sticker. I slowly turned around and said, what did you say? One of them said “we were talking about thanksgiving.” I said no you weren’t you said I bet she voted for Trump. Another employee said well, is there something wrong with that? What if I was talking about voting?

Thats when I decided I was done giving my time and money to this restaurant and I left. I get it. You think I’m a “Karen” because I complained about incompetence and then refused someone’s rubbish from the dining room. Hilarious! And to assume I’m of one political affiliation over another because I’m upset your service is grossly inadequate is what’s wrong with this country.

In my opinion this McDonalds should be leveled and re-built from the top. This was not the first VERY negative experience I’ve had here. It is the closest to my home, but I will NEVER visit there again.

Cultural events

Hello! I am a senior in college where I will be finishing up my bachelors in psychology this spring. I am currently in a multicultural psychology class, and I have an assignment due this coming Saturday where I need to attend some type of cultural event, ask some attendees a couple of questions, and write a paper about it. Are there any type of cultural events going on in GR this week?

Thanks in advance!

What is with the blooming of "No Right on Red" signs?

I can think of three put up in the last 6 months, that seems to make no sense.

Seward @ Leonard, Godfrey @ Hall, and there's another one but I can't recall the street names right now.

Help me with the logic?

Free Things To Do

Husband and I are trying to cut back on frivolous spending. Trying to come up with some ideas to get us out of the house a bit on weekends. We’ve thought of the library, hiking, nature things etc. Any suggestions for the Grand Rapids/Grandville areas for free things to do?

Grandest ymca gym

I recently joined the ymca and am wondering what location has the best weight room. I don’t mind driving and trying out different locations from time to time. I am looking In terms of weight equipment, cleanliness, and busyness.

Gun Lake impressions? The Lake, not the casino. Is it typically quiet?

I am trying to make some plans for next summer and Gun Lake was thrown out as an option for a stay. I have heard that it is a big party lake, but is it like that all summer, or just during their boat parade event? Looking for a quiet getaway spot, not a frat party.

ISO a nice storage facility for my car

Hi all. My beloved MINI Cooper took its last road trip recently and I’m looking for a good facility to store it and be able to work on it. This car is very sentimental to me as it’s the first car I bought in cash by myself and it’s my dream car. It’s a unique Cooper which is why I’m really not wanting to scrap it or part it out. Everything under the hood needs to be replaced/rebuilt, but the repair order is pretty expensive so I want to work on it myself. I’ll spend the next 10 years working on it if I have to.

I’ve never rented a storage unit before so I don’t know what rules there are in regard to what I can/can’t do. Would I even be able to work on it in a storage unit? It won’t have a plate or insurance on it while it’s inoperable. All I know is my mom said it can’t stay in her driveway and we need to find a spot for it soon. Any suggestion is greatly appreciated.

P.S. MINIs of Grand Rapids, if you see me waving from a Chevy, just know my heart is in my MINI ♥️

Early voted at Ottawa High School. When I went to get my ballot entered they took it from me, went away and came back. Said it was to find out what precinct I was in..seemed super sketch. I'm worried he did something to my ballot. Anyone else have a similar experience?

Thanks all for the comments. I think it's unlikely that any tomfoolery happened with my ballot, but it should have never been taken from my sight. I'll email the city clerk. Could just be a training issue, but definitely didn't give me a good feeling.
