RULES/GUIDELINES

  • 1. DETAILS MATTER - Use detail in your post. If you are posting for help with specific hardware, please post the brand/model. If you need help troubleshooting, post what you have done, post the hardware/software you are using, post the steps to recreate the problem. Don’t post a screenshot with no context and expect people to know what you are talking about.

How to ask good questions: http://www.catb.org/esr/faqs/smart-questions.html

  • 2. Find and Read the product manual before posting - A lot of answers can be found in the product manual. Seriously, that's what I do when someone posts a question, I first go to the manual, and most of the time, the answer is there.

  • 3. Post Formatting Matters - No one likes to read through a wall of text, you can easily add paragraph breaks by adding double line breaks.

  • 4. Put effort into your Titles - Vague post titles such as "Help", or "Please Help", or "Question" will be a sure way that no one will want to help you. Use a succinct, clear, and helpful title when creating your posts.

  • 5. Try Google First - Before you post, you should try typing your question into google.

  • 6. No piracy or distribution of copyrighted content - No piracy or distribution of copyrighted content. Violation of this rule may lead to permanent ban with no warning.

  • 7. No offering money or services in exchange for help - We are here to help. Do not try to incentivise getting help by offering to pay or exchange goods or services for help.

  • 8. No promotion or self promotion - Posts should be made to inform or facilitate discussion. Any posts with the intent to self-promote, enter contests or sweepstakes, sell products or services, or are appeals for money / funding will most likely be removed. If you feel an exception should be made, please message the moderation team.

  • 9. There may be a better subreddit for your post - For example, if you have a question about car audio, try posting in r/carav.

  • 10. No solicitation of services - If you are looking for someone to do some work for you, or if you yourself are looking for work, there are other subreddits in which you could post.

  • 11. No Legal Advice - We are not a Legal Advice Subreddit. DO NOT post asking for assistance cleaning up audio for any legal matter which may be used in a court of Law. Specifically, for audio to be used in a legal matter, (depending on the state) it MUST remain unaltered. Consult your locality/attorney for best advice for your situation. Don't let some rando on reddit complicate your situation.

Struggling with new living room setup, any help would be greatly appreciated, pics in comments

Hello r/audio, I've been attempting to ball on a budget and so far I'm just struggling. I'm trying to put together a sound setup for my living room. My major goals are to incorporate one of my Technics 1200 turntables, and to have the ability to bluetooth streaming music from my phone, which I haven't quite figured out yet. I'm not a hardcore audiophile, I can live with "good enough" sound quality.

So far I was able to find a nice pair of Boston Acoustics floor speakers for a steal, and an Onkyo Integra DTR-4.5 stereo in excellent condition for a next to nothing price (will post pics in comments). Both sellers were very genuine and well-off, there was clearly no reason in either case for them to rip someone off for small $$. Both sellers also stated that everything was in excellent working order.

I've always had good luck w/ putting together stereos and speakers in the past, but this time not so much. I'm wondering if it's because I've never had speakers this large and I may need an additional component like an amplifier? I thought that was the job of the receiver. I've read the manual for the Onkyo Integra DTR-4.5 stereo and have followed all its instructions. I have searched and am unable to find a manual for the Boston Acoustics speakers. The speakers are T series, either T930, T1000, or T1030, I forget which exact model they are but I'll check and update here when I get home late tonight. They just have traditional pos & neg speaker wire knobs on the back, no power source, no other ins or outs of any kind.

I just set everything up in the spare time I had before work, using heavy gauge quality speaker wire, and the sound is coming through very quiet and distorted. Volume is extremely quite at normal volume levels, and only reaches reasonable normal listening volume when completely maxed out on the stereo volume. Sound is peaking and buzzy regardless of the volume level. I tested the system using audio coming from both the turntable and from the TV with the same results regardless of the source.

I then added a small preamp between the turntable and the stereo and it brought the actual volume up to a normal relationship with the stereo's volume but the peaking is still proportionally the same. Sounds like the low end is peaking regardless of the volume, the treble is actually coming through nicely. This is the same for both speakers, I don't think the subs are blown because the seller raved about the sound quality and that he just wanted them to go to a good home. Also that wouldn't explain the low volume before. Do I need a DJ mixer to translate the 1200 to the receiver? I have a DJ mixer setup between T-1200 and a Sony receiver in a different room and it works perfectly. But that doesn't explain the TV audio having the same problem with good RCA cables.

I'm not a sound expert and I'm in new territory here. I feel I must be missing a required component between the stereo and the speakers. Do I need an amplifier for this setup? I thought that was the point of having a stereo/receiver.

OK, so part 2: Bluetooth for streaming music from phone

Edit: Thanks to the search option I just came across devices like this, which use any input on the stereo for bluetooth. This looks promising. Any experienced recommendations on a particular one?

I've been using the search option a LOT, and will continue to do so. Any and all advice here is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

High pitched whine just popped up - Sample

Is there anyone that can tell me what this high pitched whine is?

I made a quick recording: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OqPomv63M8g

I used to get great quality recordings (just a few weeks ago) without this high pitched hiss in the background. Nothing has changed environmentally, meaning nothing has been moved or changed on the walls or the floor.

Throwing a noise gate on it helps with the ambient noise, but then makes my voice sound worse as the high pitched sound creates a background when I do talk. I have tried different XLR inputs on my mixer and I've tried different XLR cables.

Anyone have any idea what this could be?

Advice about consumer headphones in 2024

I've been wanting to buy a good pair of wired headphones for my new computer and will be mainly using them for watching content/gaming/listening to music. I've mostly looked at headphones from brands like Sennheiser (HD 560S) and Beyerdynamic. Budget is around 250-300$

And if needed i can buy a preamp/audio interface too. It would be nice to have one that works well with the shure sm7b mic and the headphones.

Anyone got any good suggestions for the best possible headphones in 2024 for my budget. My bad if the questions are stupid im new to high quality audio gear

What mobile music players do you use?

I have over 200 GB of flac music and I used to use Poweramp but it keeps lagging and overheating my phone, any suggestions on what else I could use? (In case it's relevant, I have a Galaxy s22 Ultra)

New to HiFi

Just got my first HiFi setup. Pretty entry level, but it works. I have a TEAC AG-620 as my receiver and 2 Acculab Model 440’s. I wanted to know if I could use these for stuff like simracing games or if I would blow the speakers or whatnot. Thanks in advance!

I use davinci resolve and have a question concerning the audio compression tool

I have some audio of me and a friend playing a game and his mic is much louder than mine so I need to bring him down and me up a little. The problem is all the compression tutorials I watch don't seem to work. Even cranking the compression settings to ridiculous stuff doesn't change the audio levels at all. I can't seem to figure out if I'm doing something wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Looking for the right audio adapter, any help?

I’m looking for a mic, audio out, ground 2.5mm male (TRS headset standard) to TRRS 3.5mm female adapter that will specifically allow me to chat with a modern gaming headset to an Xbox 360 controller. I’ve found these linked below and think either one would work, but can anyone confirm or help me find the right adapter? Thanks!

White noise with my M-Audio Fast Track with Mac Apple Silicon M1

Hi !

I bought the new Mac M1 2 years ago and I hear some white noise in my speakers from time to time especially when I start to put some music. After a short time, the white noise fades away and I can listen to my music properly.

Since the white noise always appears when I start to put sound in my speakers I feel like the problem might come from the driver of my M-Audio Fast Track.

Does anybody has the same problem and know how to fix it ?

I think I will just buy a usb-c to RCA wire to replace the M-Audio Fast Track.

The device I have is the M-Audio Fast Track guitar : https://fr.audiofanzine.com/interface-audionumerique-usb/m-audio/Fast-Track-Usb

Bought an M-Audio M-Track solo for my Elgato Wave DX and it's not working

Hello there!

I bought an M-Audio M-Track Solo yesterday to use with an Elgato Wave DX microphone. I tried setting it up today, but it doesn't seem to work at all.

The microphone and headphones are plugged and it is connected to the PC. The driver (ver. 1.0.3) is installed with the inMusic Software Center. On the driver, buffer size is set to 256, and the sample rate 48000. In Windows Sound Settings, the input is set to 2 channel 32 bit 48kHz, and the playback is set to 32bit 48kHz as well.

My PC recognises the device as Line 1/2 M-Audio M-Track Solo and Duo. Nothing captures the input from the microphone and no output can be heard when playing, for example, a YouTube video.

When the headphones are connected to the front panel, regardless of output switch's state (Direct/USB) it just plays a high-pitched, loud, continuous beep that can be amplified with the Output dial on the top. When set to "direct" mode, I can monitor my microphone corectly but as I said, the beep continues with its evil journey of making my ears bleed.

The ticket system did NOT list my specific windows version but I'm using Windows 10 Enterprise 22H2. The only ones listed were 21H2 and 20H2, if it makes a difference.

All in all, my PC doesn't recognise any in- or outputs from the external audio interface with all software installed, and system settings correctly set. And there's a loud EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE in my ears.

I reckon (and hope) this is not a faulty product and there are settings that I missed that could solve this issue.

Thank you for any support you may have, and I hope I provided all details so that we can fix this issue and I can use my microphone.

I have submitted a ticket on the official website hoping that they can help me, but I came here too hoping to get some answers.

This is my first time using an external audio interface and I upgraded to the Wave DX from a Fifine T669

Help! SM7B vs SM7dB

I have a Focusrite Scarlett Solo (3rd Gen) and a 2015 MacBook Pro with Logic Pro. I’m looking for a microphone to record in a variety of vocal styles (belting included) and I’m wondering what the best setup for this would be?

I’m stuck on choosing between the two mics because I saw the 7dB has a built in pre-amp to boost the gain compared to the 7B. I would be running the mic through the Focusrite interface.

Looking for any sort of guidance and/or advice on this bc I want to get it right!

Thanks in advance🎙️❤️

Voicemod broke my GOXLR sampler?

I was checking out voicemod but uninstalled it when i noticed it was impossible to turn off. Since that the sampler on my goxlr doesnt play any audio. It lights up for a second when i press it but the light goes out instantly and the audio doesnt play. I have all my settings and routing correct, but if it's not playing any audio in the first place then i guess that wouldnt help. I dont wanna reinstall the goxlr stuff but that seems to be my best option so far, is there any other way to fix it?

Confused on whether to use X/Y or A/B microphone direction on a Tascam?

I don’t know anything about audio recording but trying to record some stuff for a film I’m working on. I want to record some sounds on a piano, and also some ambient/ environmental sounds of inside a house. In both cases the sound doesn’t have to be super pristine as the the film is quite impressionistic and distorted visually. From what I can gather I should be using A/B but just wanted to double check? Thanks!

Lake lm44 ground

Dear audiophiles

Recently I bought an Lake LM44 with the db25 connector. After measuring it with my multimeter, I found not all grounds of my AES lines are on the correct pins as in the manual is written. They are connected to other "active" grounds. Is this a problem and do I have to resolder them to the correct pins?

Thanks for the help.

What is wrong with my mic or the XLR cable?

I bought the Shure PGA58 mic for recording videos on my laptop a couple of months ago.

I soon realized that I also needed an XLR cable so I got this one (https://www.amazon.in/Female-Flexible-Resistance-Prevent-Twisting/dp/B0BS65DVZ2) Well it was USB C to XLR, but I have heard that it would work fine with the dynamic mic.

Now that I plug this XLR cable into my computer through the USB C, the voice comes off very little. I can almost hear myself from the mic.

I looked a little and it seems like I have to get an audio interface. I am not sure about anything and I am very confused. Please help

For context, I just want to create videos for my YouTube channel and occasionally use it for podcasting. Please let me know what is wrong with my mic or this cable and what can I do to get a good sound out of it.

Thanks in advance

Need better NAS/HD storage for audio files....help

Hope this is appropriately placed. I need to learn about better, more reliable HD/NAS storage for my audio files attached to my PC. I have bought a number of consumer HDs over the years and my most recent Seagate USB Hub has bought the farm taking my audio files and data with it. I dont want to buy another of these losers. I am 6x and NOT a pro on this stuff. I have searched Reddit and this seems to be a place to ask this. I am cool with just being referred to some good sources to learn about this topic so I can make a decision. Answers like buy a RAID are too specific for me at this point....RAID to me kills roaches....Aloha. Thanks.

2017 Subaru Crosstrek - Door Speakers

My fiancé has been experiencing audio issues in her car. I believe the front and possibly rear door speakers have died.

I found a video online and it doesn’t look too difficult to replace them. If I’m looking to improve the quality what do I need to be looking for? (Brands, build, etc)
