Soundbars
99.9% of the time Soundbars or HTiB (Home Theater in a Box) systems are not a good investment of your time and money.
It is the general consensus of r/hometheater not to recommend these things and instead simply steer a user toward a 2.0 or 2.1 system made of quality, Audio-Centric name brand components which are easy to assemble and cheap enough for low budget or space conscious buyers.
Most can be expanded to 5.1 if you buy the correct items in the correct order.
For further explanation please read Why You Shouldn't Buy a Soundbar

I want to redistribute content over my home's coax network to multiple TV's via a Thor HDMI modulator.
My thinking is to have the Monitor 1 output go to my main TV near the AVR and Monitor 2 go to the RF modulator. I want to avoid having to configure the AVR to do passthrough audio on both HDMI outputs though so I continue to get good 5.1 sound from the AVR system.
Does the AVR-X4800H support this (I have one on order)? I currently have an AVR-X2200W now and while the above works, I have to set "HDMI Audio Out" to TV rather than AVR which means the big speakers no longer get any signal from the AVR.
Pretty much the title. These SP-FS52's and mismatched Elac center channel have served me well (I know I know... won't make that mistake again), but after 7+ years, I'd like to upgrade to what will be a close to end-game setup for us. I auditioned several speakers recently and really fell in love with the R3 Metas. However I have a fairly large 20' x 13.5' room and I'm just wondering if I would benefit from running larger floor standing speakers like the R7 or R11 or would the R3 Metas be more than enough? The room I auditioned these speakers in was significantly smaller, which has left me questioning this.
Which brings me to another question. While The R3, R7 and R11 all sounded very good in my listening, I had a chance to listen to the Q Concerto Metas paired with the Q650 center and while it sounded very good, the concertos definitely felt lacking in terms of their clarity and bass output (in comparison to the R3). I've been thinking about this and 90% of the time, this system will be used for movies / gaming. would the R3 Metas be overkill for my use case?
Thanks in advance for the advice!
Just bought a 65 in TV and would like to get myself an audio system. Is the following a decent setup?
It's actually way over my initial budget, so please feel free to point out some good cheaper alternatives or upcoming BF deals!
I am very excited for the Dirac live Bass control update, but I have a major question I need answered before I spend the $300 on the license. I have the DRX 5.4 which doesn't have discreet subwoofers. I have 2 SVS SB 1000's but as far as the receiver is concerned it's 1 subwoofer, how will DLBC be able to accurately tune them? I feel like without being able to set filters on both individual subs there will be some funky stuff going on. Or am I just overthinking this?
I have a Pioneer VSX-LX302 and it’s running a 5.1 system. I’m using and Xbox One X for all my streaming and gaming. If I use an app like Prime I get a true 5.1 experience. The subwoofer (SVS PB1000) fires nice. If I use other apps such as YouTube, it will play all other speakers except the sub.
I have AutoSurround selected and the SW light is on the receiver. What’s going on here? Why isn’t my sub always on? I switched the sub from Auto to always on as well.
Any help appreciated.
I have a soft touch gimbal light from my theatre sofa and the switch went up in the thing. Looking for a replacement. The connection wires are like network wires… RBWYG. The light portion is around 2.25” and the flange is around 3.25” in diameter. Does anyone know where I can get a replacement??
Hi everyone,
I'm looking for some advice on a 5.1 home theater setup. My main constraint is the space for the side speakers, limited by the size of my TV (77”) and the wall (220cm). Plus, for aesthetic reasons, I prefer in-wall solutions over on-wall ones. Here’s the configuration suggested by the shopkeeper:
To cut costs and improve the look, I’m thinking of using the KEF CI4100QL as L and R speakers, the KEF Ci160QL as surround speakers, and a KEF Q6 Meta as the center speaker.
I understand this might lower the quality of the side speakers (though I prefer the aesthetics), but I’d get a better center speaker, which I know is crucial for overall sound quality.
What do you think? Are the CI4100QL unsuitable as side speakers?
I was also considering pairing this setup with either a Denon AVC-S670H or an AVR-X2800H. The extra HDMI on the AVR-X2800H could be useful for using it as an HDMI switch for two nearby TVs, and the additional channels could be used for a second room audio setup. Is there any other relevant difference between the two?
Thanks in advance for your help!
And I'm not talking about speakers, I'm specifically talking about channels.
Hi all,
I recently bought the emotiva XB2 bookshelves and XC1 center and love them but after a few days with them I’m already wanting to get surrounds for my setup. I’m still new to the home theater world so my knowledge is still pretty limited when it comes to understanding the intricacies of what makes a speaker good but I was hoping to get some input on what makes a good surround pair for my current setup? I’m going to be getting a sub before the surrounds for my 5.1 setup but would like to know what brands or speakers I should keep my eyes open for. The emotiva surrounds are downward pointing ceiling speakers which I’m not sure is what you’d want in a 5.1 setup? Any suggestions you have or even more information on what makes a speaker pair well with what I already have would be appreciated
The bass of my surround sound setup is too loud and off balance with the rest of the frequency range, even to the extent it drowns out dialog and rumbles the walls. I’m not sure the reason why — perhaps something to do with my TV and speaker mounting?
It’s definitely not the subwoofer. It seems to be the L & R speakers.
I use an Apple TV and Sony bdv e4100 system and unfortunately neither allows for manual reduction of the bass, so wondering what else I can do?
Any advice is appreciated. I need to keep the girlfriend happy!
Hello everyone here’s my problem. I’m trying to add ambient light behind my TV. I’ve tried a number of the solutions with the light strips that are supposed to stick on the back, but unfortunately they don’t stick very long. I’ve tried hot glue gun that didn’t work well. Does anyone have a product that they would recommend or a technique that has worked well for them.
I have 4 subs and wondering if the “branded” Dirac licenses have a trial period?
Thanks in advance.
I'm getting a new LG G4 TV and I'm currently choosing between the Samsung Q990D sound system and the Sony HT-A9M2 quad system with a SA-SW5 subwoofer to complete. The Samsung Model is currently available for $1,498 CAD and the Sony Set is $3,898.
I've read the quad speakers give a more immersive surround sound experience but is it worth it for 2.5x the price?
With the current sale on these speakers I’m wondering which one would be better for me. Are the 750s worth twice the price as the 350s? I do have two svs pb1000 so I don’t know if I’d be better off with just the bookshelf speakers
Not at all sure where to start with testing this home audio setup. People who renovated the house 2 owners ago had this audio setup installed. 2 speakers in the ceiling. See pictures for wiring. This is in the living room where the tv is. How do i go about testing this to see if it works with tv / bluetooth / anything.
total noob here with a bit of a goofy situation: i'm trying to connect my old tv (an LG 42LE530C) to the far older receiver i use for my cd/vinyl stereo setup (a Denon DRA-345R) and i'm struggling to figure out what the best method to connect the two would be? the tv has digital audio out (no ARC hdmi, unfortunately), but the receiver can't take it as it only has RCA inputs. what would you all suggest as the best (and preferably cheapest, lol) way to connect my setup? thanks!
I'm loosely planing out upgrading from a 7.1 to a 7.1.4 so I'm hoping one of you fine fellows could answer a couple of questions. Waiting a bit to see what I can see coming this black friday but so far I'm looking at things like the Denon X3700H in the used market that can process up to 11.2 channels. I know about the need for external amps. I already have a couple of 100w 2 channel amps. My fronts are Klipsch RP 600M II that are bi amp capable. Can I bi amp my fronts and still be able to run the 4 height speakers? As in does bi amping count as 2 separate processing channels or just 2 amp channels or both? Would be awesome if I could use the internal 9.2 amp to run the 7 I have and bi amp the fronts, and then the 2 external amps to run the 4 heights through the preouts. Is this possible with 11 channels of processing? Thanks for your time.
I know that Polk Audio is not advisable in several scenarios but for aesthetic and monetary reasons they are not bad and they are the ones I am going to use.
I have some questions to see if you could give me your opinion on the 5.1 system that I am going to set up. It is for my room which is not very big, it would be about 9 square meters or 96 square feet.
The equipment I am going to use is:
- 2x ES20 Front Speaker
- 2x ES10 Rear Speaker or Satellite
- ES30 Central Speaker
- Polk Audio PSW111 Subwoofer
I actually already had the Subwoofer but I don't know if I should reuse it or buy another one. I think it's good. They also told me that I could buy another one like it and have 2.
By having the ES20 on the front, the ES10 on the back are enough? Or should I buy the ES15. Also the room is not very big although I have an Oled TV.
Thank you very much for your opinions and advice, I appreciate them.
Looking at 100 inch screen. How are TCL or Hisense 100inch TVs? Both currently at $1600 Bestbuy blackfriday sale. I am assume they are not the best TVs out there, but how would the picture quality compare to a projector within the same price range?
Will soon be shuffling my subs around to take REW measurements.
Its not so much that its the 85lbs of the rp1400s but its the size/shape that makes them awkward to move. With the rounded tops you almost have to bearhug them with hands on the bottom to move them and arms can barely wrap around them....
I wondered if placing them on mini-fridge/appliance dollys would add any vibration/rattling sounds from the dollys? Anyone done this?
Recently my Vizio 2016 M65 TV stopped working so I'm in the market for a new one. Now, money really is not an object, but I'm also not a believer in spending over $1,500 on a TV and ideally would like to get the best value for the money.
Now all my life, I've just gone with Vizio because I've always been happy with their performance for the money. However, after doing some more up to date reading, it seems Vizio isn't so highly thought anymore.
I'll mainly be using this TV for my Xbox Series X, so I would prefer Dolby Vision, and of course HDR+ is a given. Low latency is ideal, but brightness and having vibrant color (especially in the cooler temperature range such as blues) are what I'm also looking for. 65'' is the size I'm going for.
I was originally just gonna go with a VIZIO 65" Class Quantum Pro 4K QLED for roughly $650. Now, I see Hisense is considered a good brand for the price and was considering the UN8 or whatever the latest model is. I am a little hesitant because of the viewing angle. The TV on at the top of everyone's list is the Samsung S90D, is recently going for about $1.5K and at my higher end budget. The only thing it doesn't support is Dolby vision, but if it really is as good as everyone says, maybe it's not that important. I also know there are some LG and Sony models so I was just curious if anyone has any reason why I should choose one of these over the other (or possibly another model).
Does anyone what caused the damage it didn't last 3 years I had a grill cloth on it no kids no pets?
Tempted to upgrade my 86" to a 100" on Black Friday, what is the best way to sell my 86"?
I have a small, sealed theater room, about 13x11x7.5, roughly ~1200 cubic feet. Currently using a PB-1000 (non-pro), but dealing with a lot of bass nulls etc. due to the small space, even after some room treatment.
I have the opportunity to get a pair of SB -1000 Pros for a great price, but I'm wondering if it's a downgrade vs. the PB-1000 in terms of extension etc. My sense is that the benefits of dual subs will outweigh any slight loss in capacity on the low end, and I'll have an easier time placing them well since they're much smaller, and may even be able to end up in a better place with EQ.
Hello!
I was hoping to get some opinions and feedback on Samsung TVs within the last 2 years.
I'm looking to spend up to $1,000 on a new 65-In Samsung TV. I'll be mostly using this TV for playing console video games and watching Chromecast with Google TV and as a sourced for digital music on my stereo.
I have read in other posts about the user interface specifically when it comes to turning on a game console and being redirected to the 'gaming hub'. This does not seem like a desirable feature, and as I understand there isn't a way around it. I am curious too, about how the TV operating system will handle input from a third party Smart TV device, Google TV 4K.
I'm interested in a few of the features in the gaming hub, so I can consider having to work around some of the flaws.
I'm hoping that the settings may be adjusted so that I can use only the Google TV remote and avoid any TV software systems.
My primary reason for wanting to purchase a Samsung is I will be utilizing the Philips hue app on the TV to support the lights in my living room as well as a new strip light for the TV; without having to purchase the Philips hue sync box; additionally, I want to purchase the Samsung because I know the reputation for their displays are top notch.
Should I go with the Samsung for the value of the hue sync box or should I get a different brand TV and pay for the separate hardware?
Running a Denon AVR-X3700H. Recently added a cheap powered amp (Monoprice Unity 200-Watt Bridgeable Power Amp) so that I could make use of all the channels. But I am now getting an annoying hum from ALL the speakers. If I pull the power cable from the Monoprice amp, it stops. If I unplug the two RCA cables from the amp, it stops. I have tried other RCA cables, but no difference. Any ideas? Ground loop issue? Cheap amp?
Edit- I didn't have OPT1 set as the source for the receiver TV audio channel. I'd still be interested if anyone has a more elegant solition.
Hello, apologies and thank you in advance. I've tried reading guides about eARC and I'm stuck regarding how to run things to get 4K 120 on my Xbox Series X and have my AVR run the audio. I tried going the optical route.
I just got a SAMSUNG 65-Inch Class OLED 4K S90C Series Quantum HDR which is capable of 4k 120. My receiver is a Denon AVR-X3800H and I do not believe it is calable of 4k 120, just 4k 60, at least that's what the Xbox says.
I used to run all inputs (Xbox, Ps5, PC) to the AVR and then out to the TV but now I was hoping to be able to take advantage of the new TV visual options.
I have the Xbox into the TV HDMI 1 and an optical cable to the receiver Optical TV audio IN but no sound output even when the receiver is set to TV audio. The TV audio is set to receiver(optical) out and I've tried running the audio setup on the TV but still have no sound. The optical cable has the red light but I guess could be faulty or too old?
Am I missing something? I also failed trying to use the eARC hdmi. This seems possible and like it should work but I'm stumped.
