might seem (and be) a dumb question but there it goes.
I've never worked with a mixer that was only used through an app, I've always had setups with 'normal' mixers and the band I'm working for is going to upgrade from an analog mixer and they are considering buying the soundcraft ui16, when I was researching I read about the problem with the wifi range and stability and then this question came to mind:
The setup to get the band to foh is the same as when a 'normal' mixer is used? We always play outdoors so we use a snake to get to foh, but if the soundcraft it's in foh I don't understand why I would like to have more range to the tablet/pc.
*I AM NOT AFFILIATED WITH RF VENUE. THESE ARE MY OWN OPINONS*
It looks like RF Venue just put out a couple of new products. I found this and was so intrigued, I had to order one. I haven't seen these posted on reddit, so I thought it might interest you all.
https://www.rfvenue.com/all-products/spectrum-recorder
I work with a regional touring act, and I wear many hats (FOH, tour manager, RF tech, etc)
I am currently using an RF explorer. In order to get good scans out of it, I've been using the scripts available here: https://github.com/mkupferman/rfexplorer-detailed-scan
The data I've been getting has been very good, but it's a bit inconvenient to set up at every show. Additionally, it's very difficult for me to get good scans throughout the show (I'd have to leave my RF explorer and laptop on stage).
I've been looking for alternatives to my RF explorer to help make my workflow a little more efficient. This thing popped up in my searches, and seemed to fix a lot of my problems. I went ahead and pulled the trigger. It arrived today, and I've been putting it through it's paces.
What it is:
What I like so far:
What I don't like:
No internal battery / RTC - Cannot retain date and time information between power cycles. This SUCKS, as I currently have a library of scans from the last 5 years, all sorted by date and time.
The "Average" and "Max Hold" files get overwritten every 24 hours or every time the unit is power cycled. I would prefer if they were sorted into folders by session number / date, but it still gets the job done.
Can ONLY scan 400-700mhz (granted I can't recall any situation I've been in with this band where I needed to scan outside of this range, but I know Shure actively sells products in the 174mhz and 902mhz ranges)
Cannot be used as a real-time analyzer. Data is up to 10 minutes old (not a big deal for me).
A little bulky - will not fit in 1U of rackspace (though it does have adjustable mounting tabs for securing to a shelf or cabinet)
No rubberized coating or rubber feet on the chassis (slides around easily, though that's an easy/cheap fix)
WebUI is exceedingly basic, and every time you access it / refresh the page, it seems to increment the session counter.
They seem to be marketing this towards churches / production companies, and I understand why. For a church, you could leave this scanning all-week long to get a better picture of what your RF environment looks like over time.
For a production company, you could send one of these ahead to a venue you're doing a show at, have the client plug it into power for a few hours, pull the USB and email you all the files. Then, you've got some pretty good scans of the venue you can use to figure out what frequency bands of RF gear would be ideal.
I'm looking forward to using this thing on Saturday for a show, and I think it'll fit my needs quite nicely.
Has anyone else gotten their hands on one of these yet? What do you think?
I have an older laptop running windows 10 (lenovo yoga 720) which I exclusively use for open sound meter. Skip ahead, I did the windows updates by accident, and now version 1.3 won't load correctly. Version 1.2 works fine but doesn't have all the things I use in version 1.3
I Tried all the usual reinstall, reboot, changing display settings, etc. but I was just wondering if anyone else has had this issue.
Looking at doing a mic shootout. Had a question about max SPL before they distort. Our show has a number of loud performers that sometimes create distortion.
If mic A has a listed max SPL of 136dBA and mic B has a listed max SPL of 136dB SPL, how similar will the results be? My confusion is based on the manufacturers providing a seemingly different metric for the max SPL spec (dBA vs. dB SPL).
Am I overthinking this? Or is there a way I can get an idea of the differences between the two dB specs?
I’m designing a few musicals on an Avantis for the first time, it has the DPack installed. What are y’all’s favorite onboard verb settings for this console? The few I’ve tried sound better than CL/QL verbs but I haven’t dug into them very much yet.
Thanks!
Hey Peeps ..
Anyone have the newer Whirlwind QBOX’s with the TT plug on top?
If so, anyone having issues with the tone generator failing?
A group I work with own 3 … the oldest maybe 2 yrs old and all 3 have suffered from the tone gen failing.
Copying this off of another subreddit where I posted
A couple weeks ago I was playing at a small festival and doing so every day while moving every 45 minutes to a different spot (don't ask - I might make a separate post about it). Sadly, I lost my ol' reliable SM58. Since it's gone, I figured hey, might as well try to get something else that's a bit better. What would you recommend? I am a bass baritone and I enjoy singing jazz predominantly and generally softer things, but my range is roughly E2 to D4 (at a real push, as it isn't where my tessitura lies).
My price range is probably about up to 300GBP.
Hi there,
I've just acquired the XR18 for studio use and totally new to Mixing Station. I have an older ipad running ios 10 on it. Downloaded it and managed to get it working with the XR18. So now I'm learning how to customize the app by watching youtube tutorials. What puzzles me is that what I see online doesn't fully reflect what I get on the ipad. So I was wondering if it the issue with the older ipad? Apart from the fact that most users were using an Android tablet.
What I notice off hand, is that when I change by adding elements in the Channel Strip, the graphics is not updated straight away. Restarting the app helps refresh the graphics.
Any users still using an older ipads like the ipad 4th Gen? I'm refraining from getting another device unless I really have to, which I'm trying not too.
Hi all - I bought a Behringer x2442usb and the levels/clipping indicator only lights up and shows the LEDs when I solo the tracks
it doesn't seem to have any levels indication when I'm on the main mix
I have 2 x speakers plugged into the L and R outs and I've pushed all the relevant buttons I can think to push!
does anyone know why this may be happening? I'm getting audio out to the speakers no problem but of course need to see the levels for any clipping etc.
EDIT: fix'd...
"Omg inputs 11/12 we're solo'd but the LED isn't working so I couldn't tell
I went through each channel again after your previous comment. Thank you so much for your help mate"
Does it matter what antenna I use for my wireless mics, if they have the same connection?
Hello, I found a usb sitting in my drawer and upon opening it there is a folder called "waves" with a couple of .wle files in there.
I assume these are waves licesnes but i have no idea for what plugins.
i opened waves central to see if it recognized any of them, but it didnt seem to find any plugins on the drive.
is there a way to determine what plugin these licenses belong to?
ive never installed a waves plugin before and i honestly dont know where the drive came from.. i must have picked it up from somewhere down the line lmao//
just wanna see if theres a licnces i own and im not taking advantage of it.
Thanks!
iPads can mute FX when I’m ..ugh …well …🤘🤘🤘
What the fuck happened there?
Like, my small room board mixes sound better than that catastrophe. Even my non-musical partner says, what the fuck? What is this shit?
Edit: I just watched the Ozzy Osbourne Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, and the mix was horrendous. It’s a supposedly “major” production, and it’s so bad. Dry vocals, loud drums, weird level drop in the guitar. It sounds like someone’s in-ear mix, not a broadcast production.
I got some notes from the audio tech that I just got done installing a system for. All of their FOH goes to a center stack so all of these notes are from his recording. I don’t have a great answer for him and I’m curious what you intelligent people think.
I can give more information if you want. But here are his notes
He gets most of his data from the matrix output which goes to a distribution amp
During the Prelude, the music starts with the left channel 18.7 dB below the right. At 48 seconds into the selection, the left suddenly jumps in by 16.72 dB which is still about 2 dB out of balance with the right.
During six segments (#6, 8, 10, 13, 25 & 29) the lay reader at the Lectern is between 5.33 and 8.40 dB lower in the left channel than the right. The reader should appear centered with less than 1 dB difference between the left and right channels.
During the prayer segments (#19-23), Pastor Loren is between 2.02 and 4.11 dB lower in the left channel. He should also appear centered.
During segments 32-38, the left and right channels are balanced within 1 dB. Why doesn't this occur earlier in the service?
Let me know what you guys think: My first thought is….the distribution amplifier.
Audio humans! I need your help. As a self proclaimed “road case enthusiast”, I am looking for a new backpack. What do you use that is functional, durable and flys well under the seat in front of you?
I don’t need a case for the receiver, only the Handheld. Something small, but I can’t find it.
Most cases are compatible with shure mics, that are a little small.
I have an event to play at and a friend of mine offered these set of speakers that she got free. She has no cables that she got with it. . I'm struggling to figure out the power cable situation and if just a pair of 1/4 inch cables to connect to my interface would work
I have a focusrite 2i2 so only have the typical 2 output cable slots.
Any help/suggestions?
I tried to download Sennheiser's WSM for My MacBook Pro, but i keep getting the message "error loading tac with id:54889" when pressing download. Anyone know how to fix this?
Hello everyone. I'm going to make this question sound really simple. To do that I will take example from allen&heat qu/sq series. So let's say I do some eq, gate, comp or whatever on an input channel. It applies to L-R and whatever else I send it to. Which means, I see the same settings on that input channel when I press mix1-2-3-4... and so on.
What I'm wondering is if there is a mixer, with a separate layer of these processing adjustments. Like, I do eq on channel 1 on L-R out. But when I press mix everything is untouched so I either copy paste it from L-R or eq it again from scratch under mix 1.
Obviously, this would be weird in case of gate/comp but boy did I wish I could eq a channel again on a different mix.
I'm not talking about the processing of the output channels, graphic eq and stuff. I hope I've made it clear enough. Thank you in advance!
Edit: Let's say it's qu 16 and I have 16 eqs for my xlr input channels and they are basically it for all mixes. I want it to be like 16eqs x the number of outputs I have.
Hi, currently i have VI7000 & 2 of x32(one rack type and recently bought one console) all 3 with dante cards.
Usually i set Vi7000 as leader since it receive sync from sync generator, then all other dantes as slave. However, console type x32 causing some weird sounds when its slave. If x32 is set as master, it doesn’t have any issue, but when its slave, sound from dante has some sort of static noise in it. (Although on both x32 & Dante Controller has all green on sync and stuff..)
But if i direct connect only between x32s, no noise at all whether its on slave or master.
Any idea of whats cuasing noise..?
Hi!
I have an A&H CQ20B coming for use at church. We have a 5 pc band (Drums, Bass, Acoustic, Electric, Keys), a lead singer, and a group of back up singers.
The board has 6 aux outs. I want to have 6 IEM sets for each musicians and 1 for the lead singer. The backups can use a floor monitor.
Any suggestions how I can configure the 6 Aux outs? I guess there's no right or wrong here. I just need ideas.
We'd prioritize having a stereo mix over a personal mix. Maybe because it's how we've been rolling from our previous set up (analog). Drums and bass share a mix, keys and guitars share a mix.
We got used to hearing everything mixed well anyway, so we got used to playing to compliment each other, and not really to hear ourselves stand out in each ear mix.
Also, to those with experience with this mixer, do I need to use aux outs for the livestream mix? Or does that all get handled by the USB audio?
Thanks!
I often borrow some bnc terminated coax cables from my video department colleagues when I need more length for my antenna cables. So far I've not had any problems doing this, but I know I could eventually. I'm just curious what could happen, and how likely it would be. Signal loss? Damage? Is it worse to use out of spec cable to get my antenna closer, or to use the right cable and be stuck in a less desirable location?
In my venue, when the bass amp is off but plugged into the board, it picks up a Christian radio station. Totally freaked me out when I found it because it's very distorted and talking about the devil and all. Some IEMs pick it up as well. Anything I can do about it.
Me and some friends are starting a metal band and we need a decent PA system for the vocalist. Up until this point he’s used a mic hooked up to an amp, but we all agree that it’s time for an upgrade .
The vocal technique he uses isn’t very loud, about as loud as a natural speaking voice, so we’re needing something that’ll amplify his voice over the guitars and drums
Price isn’t necessarily an issue, we’re just trying to get some ideas/suggestions on how to handle this
My daughter has to do a lot of film auditions on video. At home we have a studio but at college she doesn't have a good audio environment and the audio setup we send with her (Rode NT1) is picking up way too much ambient noise. She's also started using her phone instead of her audio interface due to portability issues. Any recommendations for a mic that is iphone 15 pro max (and also possibly audio interface) compatible with good ambient noise rejection? I was thinking a lav near her face? Preferably 300ish max.
Perhaps a Rode Wireless GO II? Actually, nope, just saw that's omni and not cardoid.
Thanks !
