Looking for a way to monitor a UPS at the stage from FOH

I have a Furman F1500 UPS in my stage rack that powers my console IO and my wireless gear. At a recent show during changeover, the house engineer accidentally shut off the circuit my rack was plugged into. Since I was at FOH, I had no idea this happened until about 20 minutes into my show once the UPS ran out of battery.

I’m looking for a way to monitor the UPS from FOH so that I have time to fix any power issues before it brings my show down.

I have a network set up between FOH and the stage that I can piggyback off of. I also have 1 unused pair in a Cat5 line between FOH and the stage (the other 3 pairs are used for analog audio currently).

Ideally I’d like some kind of indicator light at FOH that could turn on or off if the UPS loses power. Does anyone have a solution for this?

Semi-bad cable?

I had a problem with a audix d4 making a cracking sound when the drummer hit the floor tom during soundcheck. The sound was only produced when he hit hard. I was nowhere near clipping anywhere in the signal chain.

I switched the cable and all was good, but later when I tested the cable it was fine according to the cable tester. Solder points in the connectors looked fine as well.

What else could be wrong?

Are MIPRO MU capsules worth looking at?

As a Shure wireless user, I've found out that some of these are compatible, so this is only about the capsules. Does anyone have any experience with these? Are they worth looking at, or are they just some poor man's Neumann knockoffs?

Lacoustics paralel cabinets question

Hi everyone, for the past few weeks I’ve been learning L’acoustics network manager and have one question to which I cant find any answer. I have most experience with Armonia in which you always specify the number of cabinets connected to one amplifier channel. I cant find anywhere in LaNM where you would specify this. Does the amplifier get this number by measuring the impedance on the output?

Thanks

Tablet audio into mixer, playback randomly pausing.

I play the audio from a tablet through my PA, and I'm having a problem with my tablet audio randomly pausing during playback, here and there. I cant think of any obvious reason it might be doing it, but i'm wondering if it's related to the lead i'm using.

The lead i use is a simple 3.5mm headphone jack one end, and XLR plug the other. I believe the lead is a balanced lead.

I know this lead doesn't provide the stereo signal into the mixer, as the lead is a balanced XLR lead, and not a stereo XLR lead (if there even is such a thing?). But mono is fine.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but does this mean the Right channel is being earthed due to the wiring of a balanced lead?

Ok, so some headphone sets have additional controls on them, skip, pause etc, and if memory serves, they are able to provide this feature by switching different size resistors down to the earth, and smart devices read this resistance to know which button is being pressed.

Ok, getting to the point now.... if that's the case, could the wiring of a balanced lead be providing an input to the tablet, essentially telling it to 'pause' intermittently?

Or... have i gone down a completely unfounded rabbit hole?

Hello! Jbl vtx V25 vs A12

I am searching for a new line array was thinking about V25 or the newer A12, What would you rather mix on and why? Which one is louder and which one sounds nicer/better/cleaner?

Looking for help/feedback on my first live mix

Promoted my first show recently, went a little crazy and ended up running lights and sound myself. Ran two 15s from sticks and a 12 center fill on stage, mixed it all from a laptop and x-32 rack on stage - band on IEMs

Night of the show I was happy to have any sound at all lol but I'm looking back now and trying to improve. I don't hate the way the show sounded but think the vocals could have been much better. For lack of proper terms I would have liked them to sound crisper and more separated in the mix but not sure where to even start there. Are there certain frequencies I should have chased, less distortion and more volume? The keys were also buried but that is what is is.

Would appreciate if anyone could watch this 30 sec clip and give feedback

Ambience/Talk back mic situation

Hey all!

A question about a possible ambience/talk back mic set up.

My band just upgraded to an IEM system (3 of us wireless, drummer wired) and we’ve already noticed how “shut out from the real world” it feels. I’m worried that this may be an issue at our shows, which are usually at small venues and sometimes bars and clubs, where we like to engage with the crowd and sometimes we’ll take song requests. Also, I do have to remind our drummer how to start certain songs and sometimes we do make changes to the set lists.

I’m toying with the idea of setting up a condenser mic (we have an extra overhead drum mic) in front of the drum kit facing the audience to work both as an ambience and talk back mic. Someone suggested this on previous post. A couple of questions/notes:

-Could this work? -I could add a high pass filter to avoid any stage and venue lows -Each of us could adjust the levels individually, but would we have to constantly make adjustments? -Someone also suggested doing a side chain to “duck” the signal when a guitar plays? Not entirely sure what means. Just wanted to throw it out there.

Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Running VST plugins for microphone (streams, voice chats, calls, etc.)

I'm looking for a way to just be able to put VST plugins on my mic to make it sound better for livestreams, voice chats and calls etc.. I know OBS itself can run them, though I would still like to have them on when talking through other things. I'm also aware that some interfaces have intern audio racks that you can use for that purpose, yet, as far as I know, mine doesn't (Scarlet 2i2 4th gen). Waves's StudioVerse has a rack that would technically work, though I'm not really inclined to pay for a subscription. Meanwhile softwares such as LiveProfessor I've only heard of being used with actual physical mixers (I only use VoiceMeeter to regulate my inputs), leaving me unaware of whether I would still fully be able to use it without such.

Are there any recommendations or does anyone have any insight of these things?

Thanks in advance.

Saving Scenes from x32 without USB

I have tried multiple USB sticks and the Behringer X32 will never see them.

How can I take scenes from this board so I can put them into another x32 elsewhere?

Thanks

Cable Recommendation for Live Rig

I’m running a PA1U as an interface to my computer to run tracks. The interface is in our rig which may be far(ish) from my computer but I’m finding that a long (20ft minimum) usb c to c cable is not easy to find. I see some people recommending thunderbolt, but I’m not too knowledgable on what I actually need. Does anyone have any recommendations for a cable that can accomplish this?

What is my best option for my live bluegrass guitar setup?

Our bluegrass band has just started gigging and I am looking for some advice on my setup.

I have a Martin d28 with a K&K mini pickup. I am running a few effects pedals into a Fishman platinum preamp and have been plugging that straight into our xr18.

We don’t have a sound guy so I have been in charge of our EQ. Might be my issue but I don’t like the tone I’m getting when plugged in regardless of the eq. Just sounds too muddy and electric to me.

I have a Fishman mini amp and Fender Deluxe tube amp. Would I have better results utilizing either of those in between my pedals and the mixer?

Would getting an amp/cab simulator pedal help me at all?

Should we just pay someone to get us set up?

Very new to the live plugged in acoustic stuff so any advice is much appreciated.

Thanks!

Yamaha TF1 audio skips

Good evening.

I have a problem with my setup using the TF1 as a console to record audio/video shows with 2-3 guests.

The TF1 is connected to PC via USB (i5 11th gen, Win 10) and as it happens, sometimes, there is a missing portion of the audio recording. It may happen after the 11th minute, or not at all.

Because it happened twice, I decided to connect a USB SSD drive yesterday, to serve as backup. The funny thing is, this time it happened on the USB drive and not on the PC.

So let's say the whole audio recording is 30 minutes, and around 11:15 the audio is missing, but there is no silence, instead it jumps 3 seconds later and continues. This screws up the camera sync later in post. I will post an example exactly how it sounds. The speech between 1 and 2 is cut, there is 0.5 sec missing inbetween.

https://reddit.com/link/1h4ept7/video/b7hb4cjl6b4e1/player

BTW I am using Adobe audition CC and sample rate is matched (48Khz). What can I do to diagnose this? I can replace the PC, but since it happened on the USB drive as well, I am not really sure if I should.

Thankless

Looking for a serious discussion. Not intended to be complaining or anything like that.

Is this one of the most thankless jobs there is? I'm asking this off the basis of the fact that we can cater hundreds, sometimes thousands of people. What we do is extremely important, sometimes critical for the show (meaning it's not happening without someone in the audio board):

  • Each audience member worried about their specific experience and usually completely ignorant of how our job works.
  • We're usually the first to arrive and the last to leave a given event, sometimes days before/after
  • When something goes wrong (however small or inconsequential), we are ridiculed, stared at, or worse, even if it's not our fault or even in our control
  • When we do a good, or great job, most don't know or pay attention that you were even there.
  • We are expected and usually encouraged to go above and beyond our title and do more than what is necessary and cover the mismanagement or ill preparation of others.

What other jobs have this kind of thankless nature? Jobs where you're directly interacting with your audience with your expertise. I know there's a lot of jobs that go unnoticed by others and others that are underappreciated, I'm Just curious where live sound (or production as a whole) measures in the professional realm

*** I love what I do!! Couldn't imagine doing anything else. And tbh I absolutely love the fact that I can do a good job and go unnoticed, the introvert in me wouldn't want it any other way***

What to do with an x32, two qsc k12.2's and a ks118 in San Diego?

So I recently came up on a great deal on a Behringer x32 compact with two stage boxes, a pair of k12.2's and a ks118 and a ton of cables and direct boxes for a deal I couldn't pass up.

I can run them and I know others can also, but i wasn't thinking of getting into the rental business until now. With just this system, how could I monetize this system? Everything is literally like brand new and comes in covers/cases. Is there an app in SoCal for this stuff or what other ways could monetize this system, with or without providing a sound person? What sort of price for a daily or weekend rental with or without a soundperson is doable?

Thanks in advance for any and all responses!

PS. I also have a large collection of synths that I am looking to monetize for rental in studio or live use, so any thoughts on that would be helpful as well. Thanks again!

HELP!!! Shure Wireless Mics!

Been having frequency issues with my Shure wireless Mics.

1 PGX - group 0 and channel 7 1 BLX - group A and channel 6 1 BLX - Group A and channel 1 1 BLX - Group J and channel 7 1 GLX - Group 3 channel D 1 GLX - Group 3 channel 1 1 GLX - Group 4 channel 1

So I run sound in a small church and the above are the mics and the groups and channels they are on and we are having issues where the GLX mics are dropping signal and make it sound like the speaker is under water.

Previous to a wedding a few weeks ago we didn’t have any issues. Setting up for the wedding they blew a breaker which controlled our router. The router came back online and our networks were there but since this and setting the mics back up, in the exact same places, we have been having issues with them dropping signal.

The BLX and PGX mics are in a back room but no issues with them, through a wall it’s about 15 feet to the mic. The GLX mics are on stage and at the most are 25 feet away.

In my tests I have seen them randomly drop connection and not get it back. But I landed on the groups and channels and seemed to have no issues.

This morning in our service, everything was fine during practice even during the opening. Our pastor switched the mic off and went to sit down while songs were sung.. when he went back up his mic would not renegotiate a signal and he had to switch mics.

After service I swapped them all to the group 2 and different channels and once again during testing it all seemed to work fine. The podium mic is even back on the same group and channel as it used to be before all this started. I turned them off and on again and each time they resynced.

I have a company coming in this week to help get our networking updated and move everything over to 5GHZ.

Is there any other suggestions or things to try?

Rivage Editor on Mac - Sequoia

Tried using the Rivage editor on my Mac Air M1 using the previous version, and it kept crashing my computer. I updated to version 6.6.1 released 10/31/24 and it still crashes. Apparently it's a known issue. Yamaha released an update on 10/11/24 stating that an update is planned, but as of 12/1/24 there is no update. I didn't see anything on Reddit regarding this issue, so if you come across this looking for an answer know that I feel your pain.

DM7 is in the same boat.

Buzzing sound in new IEM’s?

Using a Behringer x32 compact, I just got the new Behringer UL1000g2 (we're guinea pigs for the cheap IEMs) . The problem I'm having is there's a really loud constant buzzing tone that won't go away and if I turn the pack and transmitter down where it goes away the volume is simply too low to really hear the instruments.

I did touch the transmitter around the antenna and the buzzing changed a little but it didn't go away.

I've heard of attachments I could add to the plugs, but what other things should I check out before I do that?

Figure of eight mic on toms?

I need to mic up a drum kit but don't have enough inputs (I have 16 overall). Ideally I need to keep the drums to 8 microphones. So I was thinking: Kick, Snare Top, Snare Bottom, Hat, OH L, OH R. But that would only leave space for two tom mics. So, could I use a single mic on the low tom, and then position a figure of eight mic (AKG C414) in between the high toms? If so, would this create polarity issues when mixed with the overheads? OR should I just scrap the hat mic and have an extra tom mic? ANOTHER thing to consider, is whether I should cut down to seven drum inputs so that I can have the Nord in stereo, as currently I can only have it in mono. For context, this is going to be in a reasonably large school hall for a standing rock event which will be as loud as the school lets me make it. I'm then going to use the same setup for a separate outdoor event. If possible I'd like to record it so that needs to be taken into account (also for the first event I need to do virtual soundchecks for a few songs that I'm also playing in so I'd like to minimise stage noise and have as much of the sound coming out of the PA so that I can mix it as well as possible virtually.) Would appreciate some help!

edit: upon your recommendations, i'm going to ditch the hat mic to get the nord in stereo, and either ditch the snare bottom mic to get the third tom, or use one cardiod/omni across both rack toms.

"Silent" Rehearsal Setup Question

Hey guys, this is a rookie question but I'm used to recording equipment and interfaces rather than live sound so I'm very new to this, just wanted to make sure I'm on the right track.

My bandmate and I are looking to go "analog" due to some accessibility issues (she has low vision) and so I've currently got us a mixer setup I'll describe below. We'd like a "plug and play" type situation where we can turn things on and then just start jamming. let me go through the setup as I'm imagining it:

I have a guitar going into a peavey classic 30 -> classic 30 "external speaker" output into a TC electronic Impulse IR Loader pedal -> Mackie ProFX12v3 -> headphone amplifier

Her setup would be a guitar into a marshall tube "external speaker" output(I can't remember which kind, I don't think it's incredibly relevant) -> another TC electronic Impulse IR Loader Pedal -> Mackie ProFX12v3 -> headphone amplifier

Both of our microphones would go straight into the mixer preamps.

Would this work for a near silent rehearsal? Cutting the speaker cabinet out of the loop into the mixer makes the Peavey classic 30 sound really bad as expected, I'm hoping to fix that with the IR loader pedals. What do y'all think?

Mixing Different PA Speaker Brands

I have an event coming up and I usually use the JBL JRX115 pair but 1 of my speakers decided to crap the bed. Granted they are old speakers so it was only a matter of time. Thing is that because they're so old they're not really worth buying used to replace and Im going to just get a new set

In the meantime the event coming up is this Saturday and I dont have time or money to run out and get a set of new PA speakers this week so I was considering renting 1 from guitar center to pair with the JBL. GC says that they rent out the Harbinger brand and im not sure if it would make a huge difference pairing it with such an old speaker. Would love to get any input or advice.

What happened to the Northeast College of Communications in Boston?

Hi. I went to, and graduated from, a 2 year associates program in Boston called (I think) the Northeast College of Communications back in 1997. (I think it was previously called something like the Northeast School of Communications and existed as far back as the 70’s) It was an accredited recording arts program and (if I remember correctly) very hands on and a pretty decent school. I think it was bought by the Art Institute and then that closed but I can’t find any information about it on the web. If anyone has any idea what I’m talking about, I’d appreciate the insight. Thanks.

Anyone using a Stacking / Rolling toolbox for live sound transport? Would really like to see your tips and tricks.

I picked up a Milwaukee Packout recently and plan to use it to store XLR, IEC, Mics, wireless packs, DI boxes and some random gig necessities.

I'm trying really hard to be smart about how things are packed and stored, but having a hard time seeing examples of others going this route.

For reference I'm just a guitar player running sound for my 9 person band and trying to shrink as much as I can into this stack.

Would really love it if I could see some examples of what others are doing mainly in regards to cable storage and organization. For the rest, I'm planning to use foam for permanent placements.

TIA

PA alignment

I’ve seen many videos claiming that if your PA setup is symmetrical, there’s no need to time/phase align the left and right sources. Instead, you just pick one side to align your mid/high speakers with the subwoofers, frontfills, etc.

That said, I’ve tried time-aligning the stereo image itself, especially in asymmetrical rooms (even if the PA is symmetrical), and it seems to improve the overall sound.

What are your thoughts on this approach?

Rate my acoustic solo set-up, please and thank you :)

Solo acoustic show next weekend, I'll be using the following setup:

Acoustic Guitar:

  • Plugged into a Traynor Acoustic Master Amp, which will sit behind me. I'll use the amp as both my personal monitor and the primary amplification for the audience, with no separate monitor for the guitar. Should I send the amp to the house as well, even if it's a small venue and just use the amp as a monitor??

Vocals:

  • My vocals will go through a Bose S1 Pro, which I’ll use as a monitor.
  • From the S1 Pro, the signal will be sent out to the house speakers, so the audience hears my vocals through the venue's system.
