One of the 7,000 Minstoya houses. Who wants this studio with the $824 Hoa? Only $4,662 per month.
Bless this Mayor
It’s the little drive thru across the basketball courts of Kalama Park. I saw they put up some different hardware in the drive thru lane and I’m curious what’s going in there.
Anyone know where is the brush fire and what is the status?
Winds are light and they have a helicopter dropping water.
Does anyone else fondly reminisce on stories you read on "Eh Brah?!" in the maui times in our childhood? Would love to hear some funny/crazy ones
Too bad Maui didn’t learn from the City getting spanked for unconstitutionally attempting to legislatively phase out vested property rights to STRs:
KITV had this yesterday. I get Lopes trying to avoid the release, but I am glad Cahill ordered it. As for people changing their stories.....I think Missin Bissen's already done that four or five times!
In a Hawaii news story last week they stated Maui County was already in a recession and now we’re about to double down on that. I’m posting this because people continue to post inaccurate numbers on how short term rentals exist and zero economic impact study was done on the Mayor Missens plan.
Thoughts? Looks rushed to allow a year. Where is the county going to replace its tax revenue?
Aloha!
I am in desperate need of work and have had no luck since quitting my job a month ago. I was previously working at Lokelani Intermediate as the Tech Coordinator, and was there for a little over a year. I've applied to many places, gotten interviews, and followed up but nothing. I'm so desprate to be completely honest, but I feel like I'm being held back by my social anxiety and lack of ability to drive.
I am willing to do pretty much anything but it seems like you either need experience, a driver's license, or both. What do you think I should do?
Curious about a few things:
Does anyone know what used to be behind the Mantokuji Mission? It looks like the erosion may have taken out a structure of some kind based on the cement and rebar remnants on the beach. Wondering how far away from the water the Mission originally was.
What are the single bars over some of the graves for?
If you have any additional information or old photos to share, that would be awesome!
Seriously, the County now blames cell carriers for deaths in the fires?https://mauinow.com/2024/05/01/breaking-county-of-maui-files-complaint-against-cell-carriers-alleging-failure-to-report-outages-during-august-2023-fires/
Best shaved ice in Maui?
I have lived on Maui for 12 years now. Came here with my late wife because she wanted to be back on her home island and to be with the bulk of her family. She passed in 2021 and I am looking to diversify my circle of friends beyond my "in-laws."
Where are the local watering holes where I can meet people and hopefully establish some non-familiar friendships. I currently live in Wailuku.
Would appreciate community's help to make a list. You would think it would be easy to find, but there does not seem to be a complete map anywhere of every place that has diesel. Google maps has a few, but misses several I know about.
Where have you seen the green handles?
Ms. Chings in Keokea has diesel. Safeway has diesel. Maui Oil Co has diesel. Where else do you know?
Preferably, I would not like to travel to the west side for Mother’s Day because most likely I will have to work in wailea after. Are there any nicer, maybe a tier below upscale brunches? I’m not looking to spend over $110 per person for a brunch buffet because my mom doesn’t eat too much or stuff herself too fully to get the whole “worth” of a buffet. Somewhere with a nice view/inside either upcountry or in wailea. Also I’m not a fan of the mill house so please do not recommend it. Thank you!
HELP! I’ve been on Maui Hawai’i for about 10 months now and I’m missing some of my favorite chain restaurants. I know I can cook any and everything I could want but groceries are expensive and then it’s hot , and I want to support because I’m tired of seeing restaurants close! So I’m looking for places I can try . I also wanted to start a food series on TikTok because it’s not many at all! Not many suggestions and I feel like it should be known . I also know about Poke Local spots like: Foodland and Tamauras but I’ll even take more of those!
Food truck wise, local places, anything similar to the following :
Chipotle, Cava , Quidoba ( can you tell I want a bowl ?) Wingstop ( I think I’m just watching too much TikTok and want the ranch, I know it’s easy to make) Indian influenced (where is the Pani Puri) Caribbean, Jamaican ( Where is the Curry, Rice and peas and Plantins?) Italian , Greek, Mediterranean! The list can go on, on but does anyone get my drift?
It’s not a lot of advertising, don’t get me wrong even the fast food places( McDonalds , Taco Bell, etc) is prideful on the way it looks just like the advertised picture. I don’t want that all the time!
I hope people see this because I’m ready to eat! Thank you
Hello,
I wanted to ask the opinion of this community about how recovery efforts are going?
Trying to see the mindset of you guys of what has worked in recovery, what hasn't worked and what you're hoping for.
Thanks!
I know timing is less than ideal to move to Maui and eventually attempt to buy or build a house. We're very sensitive to the immense help needed for those who lost their homes, the ongoing impact of developers, the rental market, and the ultra rich buying up land. And then there's the impact of people like us who have saved their whole lives on the mainland and just want to move there.
But my wife and I have talked about moving to (and eventually retiring to) upcountry Maui since we made our first trip over 30 years ago. Time flies and here we are: retired, just sold our beautiful custom built family house in a snowy region, just finished our 5 months of bucket-list travels, now renting a tiny house back in the same town, and ready to move to upcountry Maui next winter (with dog, cat and car) to test the waters and make sure it's a fit, praying we can even find a long-term rental house.
Of course the housing market is ridiculous. We have a pretty strong preference for settling upcountry (e.g. Kula) where it's not too wet and not too dry and perfect elevation for us. This is fairly limiting in terms of looking for real estate, but that's the vision we're starting with anyway.
For those of you who have come before us, how difficult was it to move to Maui? Did you take the time to make sure it was a fit and how long did it take? For the moment, all the real estate we've looked at has been underwhelming - old houses, some tiny, most lacking in architectural interest, and asking $2M - $3M or more. Ugh. I'd seriously consider building even with all the warnings on Reddit. We've built 3 houses prior and are pretty particular in our standards of quality. I know whatever lot we buy would need to already have a water meter. Is it in the realm of sanity to think with $3M we could find a "quality" existing house or buy land and build a 2500 sq ft home on 2 acres? It also seems a bit crazy spending over 50% of our NW for a house, when just about anywhere else in the US we could spend so much less for so much more... but we've already come to terms with that.
What is also unknown for us is what VHCOL really means. If our existing budget is $80,000 (mortgage free), how much more will it be on Maui? Any other advice or encouragement? We've been working with a realtor and I do believe that a perfect place for us will show up. We may just have to redefine "perfect."
Thanks for your thoughts.
Watching this video makes me believe that we need to see this as opportunity. https://youtu.be/UJeSWbR6W04?si=jJ_FkMcciLK4eTYU
Because I have to admit, I'm not. As someone that frequents the park, knows the park boundaries really well, and has witnessed cultural practices in the park...
...I just don't get it.
It's starting to come across as anti science and anti astronomy.
Also. No. I'm not a transplant.
Hello is anyone familiar with the seating situation at Merrimans? I reserved a dinner slot for 6:45 and hoping to see the sunset. The website says seating is done from front to back starting at 430 or something like that. Any tips on getting a good table? Thanks
So I regularly watch this guy on YouTube that does docs. He’s doing a series on Hawaii and this video is about Maui.
There this local woman who is making all kinds of claims about her lineage and land owner rights. The weird part is she’s basically saying people buying land in certain areas of Maui are really only leasing the land because it belongs to “the crown”. The people who buy the land only own what’s built on it but the land itself is a “lease hold”.
She comes off as crazy or high from my perspective but wanted to hear y’all’s thoughts lol. Below is the video and the 12 minute mark is where she comes in.
Anybody hear something big fly over Waiehu late night ? Second time in a couple weeks. Too late/dark/asleep to see what it was but it woke me up.
