Set on the beautiful beaches of Hawaiʻi, “Reefs at Risk” explores the harmful effects some sunscreen chemicals have on coral reefs, marine life and people. In order to protect this fragile ecosystem, Hawaiʻi lawmakers pass a bill to ban the sale of sunscreens with oxybenzone and octinoxate. Beach Safety - Know before you go.
Hawaiʻi’s ocean and beach conditions are as unique as the islands themselves. This website constantly monitors the surf, wind, and reports from public safety officials that directly affect the conditions for safety of Hawaiian beaches.

Are there any events, sales, specials, etc that are happening from Dec 3 - 21? Maybe some tides or astronomical occurrences? We are staying Kona side but have a car and have made the drive around before no problem.
If you have any other recommendations for our stay they are welcome.
Thank you!
Anyone doing Gunpla build nights? (Kona side?) I've seen them on the mainland, and have a kit and another coming, and thought it'd be so fun to build with others into these! 😆🤙🏾🤙🏾
Just curious if this would work with the weather in lower puna? Domes seem like they would be hot, but they seem popular so i wanted to see what peoples experiences were?
Are the top five winners of the coffee cupping festival declared? Couldn’t find any information on the website yet!
Who is a good travel agent on island?
I’m looking to book a trip to Japan and there are several people going from various locations, so I thought I would get someone to help.
Anyone know why the Full Moon property in Orchidland sometimes gets packed with people and cars? On laniuma st?
What to bring what to sell? I’m looking at selling my mainland house and trying to get something, even some yurts with a bit of off grid property so I can grow food, have some chickens, give excess to food banks/neighbors (I do that here). I’m in healthcare so could get a job quickly. I’m terrified of what the mainland will become in the next few years and want to live next to “good” family (already live there).
Passed my driving test with flying colors, thanks to everyone for the helpful advice!
I just looking for see if anybody Kona side has anything they need assistance next weekend with, on 11/16 or 17th. Can do rough carpentry, sanding or painting/staining, garden/yard work and slight finish work.
Fairly new to the island so still learning agriculture and gardening aspects but am happy to work side by side and offer a hand as I learn more.
Buy any materials needed for projects around the house. I'll plan to bring all my tools for a half day and help out any kine possible. As of right now, this will occur every weekend but I also don't want to be a buggah to mods or community. As continue to learn and grow my time will become limited.
Shoot me a PM or reply and can work something out! Sorry if can't help everyone who needs, just trying to offer my spare time on the weekends!
Random but wondering if anyone rides MR2s here on island? Have fallen in love with them over the last 3 years and love seeing them ride around 🙏🥲🏎️
So, driving over Saddle rd. Close to Kipuka 21 and suddenly there’s all these big splats on my windshield. I thought it was big rain, but it’s bugs.
I’ve driven this road hundreds of times. Never seen this.
Does anyone know what kind of bugs these are ? I can’t post pics bc it’s just bug guts.
What the eff is this? And they want to increase from 200 to 500 attendees next year 🤬

I have a relatively large beard and mustache and need to get it trimmed up a bit. Any recommendations for a good barber or stylist for beards on the Hilo side? Mahalo!

Hey y'all. Looking to see if you know of any mutual aid orgs / groups on Big Island, Kona side I can get involved with. The election results have me wanting to make sure I'm connected to mutual aid orgs as much as possible to care for my neighbors. So thought I'd come here and check. Mahalo.
Power has been out on the kona side from the top of Hina Lani to makalei. Hawaiian Electric’s power outage map has no cause or eta, just wondering if someone out there knew anything about it.
Does anyone know where county results are? On the Hawaii country section of the state website nothing is loaded.
Where the heck are the election results?
Hey I'm getting rid of some stuff (no furniture or anything too heavy) and could use someone with a truck to take it to the dump / salvation army. Probably less than a single truckload depending on how big your truck is.
Let me know if you know someone or are someone, thanks
It was crazy flooded yesterday. Can get through now?
Fairly long quake just now felt in Honoka'a.
Does anybody have this past year’s (2024) bon dance playlist for the BI?
I registered at the DMV to vote a couple weeks ago, but was never mailed a ballot for the election. Where can I go to get a ballot and vote by tomorrow? I’m relatively new to the island and this will be my first time voting, so I’m super unfamiliar with the process. Mahalo in advance!!
Howzit, my husband (22) and I (23) are looking for long term renting in Kona side. We both work 40-80 hour weeks, don’t party, no pets, don’t smoke cigarettes. Our budget is 1000-1,750 a month. I’ve been homeless for a while trying to find housing that isn’t vacation rentals but I haven’t had any luck. The waitlist for section 8 housing is years from now so it’s not exactly an option for me. Born and raised Kealakekua, it would sadden me to have to leave my home island because I can’t find anywhere to stay, so if anyone knows someone who is looking for honest long term renters/ or is offering long term units please help us out. We malama ka aina, always clean up after ourselves and try to spread aloha. Mahalos for the help/ reading our post.
Just curious, how bad the cops are with weed? I know a small amount like an 1/8 or below is decriminalized, but curious if these laws are strict? I can't imagine them being serious in Puna or the rural areas but i figured I'd ask. I know Hawaii does medical, so thats cool.
