Aloha! This is a community of Big Island redditors.

Aloha and welcome to Moku o Keawe, also known as the Big Island!

This is a friendly subreddit community dedicated to sharing news, pictures, videos, and events taking place on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi.

Reefs At Risk

Set on the beautiful beaches of Hawaiʻi, “Reefs at Risk” explores the harmful effects some sunscreen chemicals have on coral reefs, marine life and people. In order to protect this fragile ecosystem, Hawaiʻi lawmakers pass a bill to ban the sale of sunscreens with oxybenzone and octinoxate. Beach Safety - Know before you go.

Hawaiʻi’s ocean and beach conditions are as unique as the islands themselves. This website constantly monitors the surf, wind, and reports from public safety officials that directly affect the conditions for safety of Hawaiian beaches.

Fair price for A’e A’e - Variegated Banana bunch

We moved into a new house and there are some variegated banana trees. We just harvested the first bunch and found out they’re sort of valuable. (The prices online are crazy, $47 for one banana!). What would be a realistic, fair price for a bunch, approx. 25 bananas?

Are my kids going to be picked on?

Aloha!

My wife and I are looking at moving to Hawaii for a year and we are looking at the Kona area. We have four kids (8, 6, 4, 2). They are all very pale, blue-eyed, blonde-haired kids.

I've heard that there are some ill feelings towards pale-skinned people from some of the people in Hawaii. If I send my kids to the public school system will they get picked on for being pale or is that not a thing?

Thank you in advance!

Lost ring - metal detector

I'm visiting from Oahu. A friend lost his wedding ring at the beach. He knows roughly where it is, but can't find it. Any chance anyone knows someone who has a metal detector or knows where he can rent one. He lost it at Hapuna Beach but he is staying with another friend near Hawi. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Mahalo!

Bulk Compost?

What’s the best place to get quality bulk compost? Looking to get a truckload, 15 yards or more, delivered in Kailua Kona. Using for annual vegetables.

Possible to move there

husband owns a reputable framing company in Canada (does condos, commercial buildings, houses, shops) with over 10 years experience. Wondering if there is at all any need for good experienced framers on the island for long term? Love the island and the people and our family would love to make a big move over. Obviously many many hoops to jump through if it would even be possible but wanted to get a feel if framing was even a high need job on the island first! Any insight would be great, thanks!

What ate the avocado ripening in the kitchen in a paper bag?

Aloha! I put some avocados in a large, grocery store paper bag to ripen Sunday night. Today I find that a creature has been enjoying the avocado! It bit off pieces of skin which were left in the bag. I see teeth/knaw marks...but who left them? I thought rodent, but there are no mouse or rat droppings or urine on the countertop. It must have been in the bag for a while, but again nothing "rodent-y" in the bag. And there were no marks on the paper bag, so it slipped in from the top of the bag. What do you think? Mahalo!

Any word on merrie monarch streaming this year?

Last year they streamed for all of us who couldn't get tickets. Not seeing anything on their site about it, figured I'd ask.

Any help would be appreciated.

Does anyone know anything about tankless hot water heaters? Mine quit heating water Friday, two full tanks, the stove works (propane also), no electrical breakers are tripped. What else can I check?

I haven't heard from my property manager yet. I would love to take a hot shower!

TIA

Leis in europe

Is it possible to get leis shipped to europe, or is it possible to buy dried leis (is that a thing) and have them shipped?

When I google leis in europe, only fake plastic crap comes up, for obvious reasons, but I am looking for something genuine. Any assistance would be appreciated

Anyone do RC planes on Island

Now that the farm is up and running... mostly... I'm getting back into my hobbies when I have spare time. And since it's raining all the time up here, I get to spend a lot of time building stuff. Which I enjoy.

Anyone else on the Hilo side do rc planes? I'm talking the big stuff, the stuff you build, not the foam based imported stuff that crushed the hobby before the FAA went and did it again...

Sacred Rope Offerings

While visiting your beautiful island, I came across a few sacred sites with offerings. I’m trying to learn more about the name and meaning of the rope example in the photo above. When I searched for it on the internet I couldn’t find much other then references to Japanese Shimenawa sacred ropes.

Are there any Zoology related majors at UH Hilo?

I went on a college trip to University of Hawaii Hilo and I loved it a lot. I want to study zoology specifically major in something that works with animals in their environment. Does anyone know if there are any classes there that relate to this. I really like the area and the school and would like to play baseball there as well so having something to study revolving around zoology would most likely seal the deal in where I would like to go. Thanks

How to order when your nearest Tesla Delivery point is Oahu and you're on a different island?

I set my Delivery Zip Code on the order page and then proceeded to order. Order fee and mobile connection was charged.

Later I find out that Tesla doesn't actually deliver to your zip code. In my case it was on Big Island. I contacted Tesla about how to get the car here and they would not help and wouldn't reply.

So just like that Tesla web site is deceptive about delivery, so I was duped and ripped off no refund.

My question is how does anyone actually buy these cars when there isn't a nearby delivery?

I would have to fly from Big Island to Oahu, rent a hotel and car, hand deliver the registration and insurance to Young Brothers for shipping, fly home, wait a few weeks for the shipping schedule, fly back to Oahu, rent Uber, pick up car drive to port, Uber to airport, fly home andwait for arrival. This seems ridiculous, isn't there a better way?
