So I’m going to Oahu for the weekend, i’m leaving immediately after work and I’m thinking of taking the bus instead of drive so I don’t have to pay for parking.
I’m just wondering how the suitcase situation is. One time They did let me bring my full size suitcase on the bus home from Oahu because the bus was empty, but is this their usual policy? I’m gonna try and squeeze everything into my carry on size bag/personal item cause I don’t wanna crowd up the bus. Mahalo!

Does anyone know who is trapping what along the south shore near the mouth? Saw about a dozen traps out there today.
I’m trying to setup a weekly grass mid-to-high level grass volleyball game in Anahola : doubles, triples or quads. Have the net , need more mid/high level players.
Anybody know a good men’s or coed soccer league? Or pickup games too. I found this one online but can’t find the contact info anywhere. Would love to join the Hanalei team if it’s possible
Was in Lihue today and the Costco had a big sign right inside the door that they are hiring. Hadn't seen it before, so they must really need people. $19.50/hr. plus benefits. Beats the pay I've seen in other places.
From the "captions" of the March 13 County, County Council voted on Resolution 2024-12 to oppose Senate Bill 3335:
No: Bulosan, Kagawa, Cowden
Aye: Carvalho, DeCosta, Kuali‘i, Rapozo
Find the start of the discussion by searching on "2024-12". The vote takes place at "If not, the motion is to approve, roll call."
The discussion in video starts at 2:06.
Anyone have any insight on flight patterns like this?
As I drove by today, I noticed that demolition has started on the southern part of the complex.
There’s been a few more negative posts recently and I figured I’d share the aloha reminding us all that we live in paradise! Just went for a dip in the ocean during sunset and can’t imagine a better place to call home. Hope everyone reading is happy and in good health 🤙
I stopped by for lunch in early February and there was a sign on the door saying they were short staffed and closed. Yesterday I went by again and it's still shut down.
No huge loss, but I'm so tired of local businesses shutting down during normal operating hours and not posting anything about it online. Toss a post on fucking instagram, at least. It takes two seconds.
Also, a sign telling me your entire staff quit does not want to make me eat at your establishment. It tells me that everyone hates working for you and I don't relish the idea of eating somewhere with deeply unhappy employees.
Can't figure out what to do with a dead push mower. Any ideas?
So many ads say "must be working." Do landlords understand they are discriminating against disabled people, who are a protected class under federal housing law?
I see soooo many ads that say this. When I asked a few landlords if they understood they were being discriminatory, I got some scoffs and one person said that if a landlord is letting a room in an otherwise occupied property, federal housing laws don't apply.
Why isn't proof of ability to pay enough? I have more financial resources than many working people. Why do so many landlords in Kauai want to keep disabled people out of housing?
And few years ago I spent a year looking for housing. It's so easy for landlords to see one disabled person and toss their application. It is not fun.
I seen like 6 fire trucks shooting Westside is something happening?
Just wondering were to get a lift kit installed in my Tacoma.
An article covering the same meeting that I posted about recently. Most of it was devoted to Council Chair Rapozo's opinions, which is reasonable since he was presenting his proposal:
Rapozo referred to a Sept. 2023 study from the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, titled The Economic Benefits and Social Costs of Legalizing Recreational Marijuana.
He cited the study’s finding that states with legalized recreational marijuana have seen increases in substance use disorders, chronic homelessness, and arrests for both violent and property crimes.
The study tempers that a bit, pointing to heavy users, which makes it understandable:
Although some of our estimates are noisy, our findings suggest that the economic benefits of legalization are broadly distributed, while the social costs may be more concentrated among individuals who use marijuana heavily.
and later
At the same time, costs are more likely to accrue to heavy-user individuals and are not easily found in aggregate state-level data.
On the economic benefits, the article said
According to Rapozo, revenue from marijuana sales accounted for only 0.78%, 1.77%, and 0.4% of the 2022-23 fiscal budgets for Colorado, Washington and California, respectively.
“It’s a very small portion of the operating budget of the states, and it really was not what it was portrayed to be,” Rapozo said.
This sort of jumps out because California alone is the fifth largest economy in the world. The percentages of total budget are small, but the actual numbers are significant. Don't know his source, but these might be representative numbers for 2022:
Colorado - $313,242,000 (1.6%)
Washington - $484,009,000 (1.2%)
California - $712,405,000 (0.2%)
Another source showed these numbers for 2021:
Colorado - $457.4.1M
Washington - $599.4M
California - $1.5B
I took a quick look at the article's CDC reference to addiction and the specific citation is Prevalence of Marijuana Use Disorders in the United States Between 2001–2002 and 2012–2013. I haven't looked closely at the methodology etc in the study, but this stood out:
Because the risk for marijuana use disorder did not increase among users, the increase in prevalence of marijuana use disorder is owing to an increase in prevalence of users in the US adult population.
Fortunately, there's something called "captions" for the County Council meetings. This is the one for the meeting where it was discussed on Feb 28. You can search on "3335" to see where the discussion starts.
They ended up voting to defer until the next Council Meeting on March 13. The vote looks like a proxy for how they might vote on the resolution, i.e., aye = no on resolution and no = yes on resolution. At the least, a vote to defer might show being hesitant to support the resolution. The results on vote to defer ended in a tie:
- Bulosan - aye
- Caravalho - no
- Cowden - aye
- Kagawa - aye
- Kuali'i - no
- Rapozo - no
Not present was DeCosta.
They are apparently deferring the proposed Ag lots mauka of Anahola, up near Spaulding Monument.
But they are proposing spending almost $20.7 million to buy 358 acres of Grove Farm land, currently ag zoned, and eventually, build 1000 single family homes and 200 subsistence ag lots. Phase 2 (the initial building phase) calls for 240 lots at an estimated additional cost of $71 million, but that money would come down the road from the Legislature..someday.
Pic of the slide is included. Also, a link to the meeting video. The brief discussion of the two Kaua‘i projects (Hanapepe, and this one) starts at the 3 hr 49 minute mark

Safeway bathroom was closed. Had to use the portapotty by the boat ramp. 1/10 would not recommend.
