I’ve ran into one the other night. Majestic. Driving along Haleiwa when I spotted one. I remember my tutu dem having superstitions about seeing on owl but I forgot what that superstition was
Has anyone using Tesla solar opted for the Tesla Backup Switch for whole home backup rather than the gateway? If so, any regrets? Any problems with HECO going this route?
I was recently sent this ring with the phrase “Hopena Ho’ohiki” engraved on the inside
Does anyone know what it means?
I am currently in the middle of creating an online project to celebrate and bring attention to our islander culture to a bigger audience. (At least that’s the idea.)
I would like someone who is confident in character design and creating Hawaiian kākau and Māori Moko.
Of course you will be properly paid and credited, I’d never let a cousin feel cheated!
Please hit me up if you are interested!
Mahalo nui loa!
Aloha!
For a human, not a dog! Looking for a doc or service that will do a gentle wax cleaning - NOT by digging it out. Just had a terrible painful experience with that. But I have, in the past, had gentle, water or oil flushing out, which was a much better experience. Can anyone recommend? Mahalo
Now that I'm all moved back, and I finally have a kayak, I'm looking at Lake Wilson as a kayaking option when it's too windy or too high surf for the usual ocean spots (I live in Wahiawa). It's usually pretty calm and so pretty. It looks like it would be great to kayak in. Yet I don't often see people out there when I drive by (could be my eyes are on the road). Is there a reason NOT to kayak Lake Wilson? Mahalo in advance~
“It does seem like there’s a pattern with transportation and corrections that we just get claims over and over and over again.”
People literally died or got crippled for life because state workers were lazy and decided to milk the clock. And yeah, I get a lot of claimants were prisoners, but it’s not the workers’ duty to play judge, jury and executioner. They’re in their care and it’s still abuse and neglect.
Steve Lehto: Dept Arrests Drivers for DUI Who Blow 0.00
https://youtu.be/7bjKUKotDQc?si=y8uKCYhAcAAX8kAX
"Out of 1283 DUI arrests the cops referred to the prosecutors, the prosecutors declined to pursue charges in 1038 of them. That's an 81% rejection rate."
One of the comments: "As a military member who lived on Oahu for 5 years, I saw this situation happen to 2 of my troops. Both arrested for DUI but had zero alcohol in their system. This created serious implications for them as they held a security clearance (which got suspended and forced them into a position where they could not perform their required duties). It took them several months and cost them financially to clear a matter that never existed in the first place. Between civilian and military investigations along with money out of their pocket to retain an attorney and have the arrest expunged, their lives and careers were unjustly damaged so that the HPD can make their “quota”. The officers who perform this tactic should be held financially liable should the case be rejected due to insufficient evidence"
I was born and raised in Hilo, but had a complicated relationship with it for many years. I loved the people and the culture, but always wanted more in life, so when it came time for college, I jumped at the opportunity to go to the mainland-- and guess what? Just like 98% of local kids, I absolutely hated it. I would've transferred back, but unfortunately, my mom and sister followed me up here (long story). Now after two years, I'm taking a break semester just to be back home because I missed it so freaking much. I don't remember the last time I've been so happy.
Has anyone else felt the same way? Trying to leave for whatever but just... can't?
We have had multi generations of spotted dove nesting by our porch light and we never bothered them, but our HOA recently removed them and now we found them starting a new birdbnb outside of our window AC.
While I am pretty happy to see them hatching eggs, should I be concern about bird mites? Our window can’t be fully sealed as it’s a jealousies window.
Why is it widely acceptable to not wear helmets on mopeds, but reckless if you don’t have one on a motorcycle? Many wear sandals, shorts and no shirt. What gives?
I’ve never lived in an area where scooters/mopeds were popular/useful so this is a very new concept to me. Just wondering what the difference is?
Edit: meant mopeds not scooters!
I’m on O’ahu, and opening up my boxes of LEDE and was wondering if anyone’s up for swapping cards.
Just got an email that Biki will raise their prices starting June 1st, with a $10/month increase for the Commuter plan, going from $15 to $25.
A little disappointed, but not surprised, seems like the quality of bikes and stations has gone down (the number pads to unlock bikes are buggy as hell), so hopefully some of this will be put towards better maintenance. Still, Biki has been worth every penny to me so far, and while $25/month for the base plan is a little tough to swallow, I always thought $15/month was a steal for what it offered.
Anyone know why ocean safety chief John Titchen was placed on administrative leave?
Hawaii came closer than ever this year to legalizing recreational cannabis. The state’s Senate passed Senate Bill 3335 by a vote of 19 to 6. The measure was then passed through three different House committees and a procedural vote from the whole chamber. Its last stop before a final House vote and then supportive Governor Josh Green was the House Finance Committee, with the chair refusing to give the measure a vote before a deadline, effectively killing it for the year subverting the will of the people.
The proposed law would allow adults 21 and older to possess up to an ounce of cannabis and up to five grams of cannabis concentrates, purchasable from a licensed cannabis retail outlet. The legislation would establish the Hawaii Cannabis Authority and Cannabis Control Board within the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs in order to oversee the legal cannabis market, including licensing and regulations. Recreational cannabis would be taxed at 14% and medical cannabis taxed at 4%. The personal cultivation of up to six plants would also be allowed.
We need to come together and tell this committee what we think. If you agree or disagree with the bill shouldn't matter, what should matter is our vote. One person in a committee should not be able to take that away.

I've got family finally moving back home to Oahu. They're considering shipping their vehicle (instead of selling there, buying here). Anyone have recommendations for a full service transport company that'll pick up the vehicle at their LV address? We can pick up at the Oahu port.
I've done the transport from HI to LV, but never the other way around. I assume the process is the same.
Thanks for the recommendations
I'm not from the U.S. and I ask because there have been some students in my class that disrupted classes because they don't think the white teacher deserved their position. It's also so common to hear hate agains haoles and white people. I understand the negative impact of colonialism, but things weren't all gravy prior to contact. Plus, there's evidence that Hawaiians were also pretty destructive to some native species as well so it's not all like only the white man destroyed the environment.
Isn't judging white people by their skin the same as when some white people judge others on the basis of their skin? I don't get how it's better if non-whites do it. Plus, discrimination and prejudice exists pretty much everywhere and no white people did not invent it.
I'm not trying to point in one direction or the other, but just seems that when people talk about the history here they romanticize it and seem to think everything was so swell beforehand when there are so many things that I'm sure many Hawaiians today wouldn't put up with even under Hawaiian rule. Not to mention how much corruption I hear about in Hawaiian run projects and organizations. Again, it's not a race thing because corrupt people come from all races. I find that this approach of romanticizing history and blaming everything on the white people seems to perpetuate judging others on race as opposed to actual values, attitudes, behaviors, or policies.
I believe racism is taught. As a kid I never thought about race and was friends with everyone. It wasn't until adults pointed out differences or made comments about things that I started to pay attention to it.
Again, I KNOW the negative impacts people have endured and continue to suffer from due to colonization, but if you take into account world history you will see many people have done many worse things to others. I have taken Hawaiian history classes and researched things on my own as well and I understand those sentiments and the anger, but it just doesn't seem like a well rounded perspective.
Plus, the Japanese population seems to benefit more than the Hawaiians or even white people here. I just don't get why the continued focus on race and why not teach a more nuanced perspective on things.
I'm just curious what people that grew up here think and look at things.
Is there any real Muay Thai in Honolulu? I know there’s plenty of MMA and BJJ but do any schools offer pure Muay Thai classes?
I am talking sweeps, clinchwork, knees and elbows, not watered down “Muay Thai” which is basically kickboxing with some knees.
Hello all,
I have been growing my skills in cooking Hawaiian cuisine, and I will be throwing a party where I will be cooking Kalua pork shoulder in a homemade Imu.
I want to be as authentic as I can and I have sourced banana and ti leaves. I am wondering if Alaea salt is something that is actually used and adds a distinctive flavor to the pork and other foods and is part of the tradition, or if this is just some marketed bs product.
It will be expensive to order online, so I want to make sure it would be worth it!
Thanks!
I love assagios house salad dressing, but $10 for a small salad thats crazy. Does anyone have the recipe?
Aloha
Been living in Hawaii for 2 years now. Wife and I want to spend a weekday daytime without kids just having fun.. but she doesn't want beach, hiking, shopping. I'm not sure what else is available but looking for some fun ideas for 30-something couple can spend 9am to 3pm.
Any activities/places/unique sighting welcomed. Mahalo
I recently adopted a cat who has resorptive lesions (dental condition) and has had over half of his teeth removed, his remaining teeth are healthy at the moment but I was wondering if anyone knew about any good vets that do cleanings or teeth extractions just in case (trying to find the least expensive options that will provide him the most care)
I’ve been trying to shop around looking at vets and pet insurances but they either don’t list the prices, or don’t cover dental.
I was just wondering if someone might have any information that’ll point me in the right direction.
Thank you.
I'm just here to save people the work of finding this themselves, in hope it makes it easier for people to hold elected officials accountable.
