Aloha, this is a subreddit to share information about emergency preparedness as it relates to disasters both natural and man-made for residents and visitors in the state of Hawaiʻi.

Hawaiʻi is one of the most isolated archipelagos in the world. Currently, we are extremely dependent on supplies shipped here. It has been said that if a major disaster should happen, we have only around 2 weeks of supplies to sustain on.

Feel free to post links, ask a question, and offer advice on how to prepare ourselves, our families, and communities.

Here we can talk story and share news about natural disasters that can occur in Hawaiʻi and how to be better prepared if they do.

Some examples:

  • Hurricane

  • Earthquake

  • Tsunami

  • Drought/ Flash Floods/ Severe Weather

  • Fires

  • Volcanic Eruption

How to prepare for other events that may occur such as:

  • Loss of job/ financial emergency

  • Indentity theft protection and scam warnings related

  • Disease outbreaks- dengue fever, measles, rat lungworm, hepatitis A, etc.

  • County water wells going down or becoming polluted- spare pumps/parts unavailable and/or broken

  • The potential that needed items being shipped to the islands could slow down or stop

This subreddit is also for offering suggestions, tips, and recommendations.

Need local source for a Bluetti/Jackery type power station in Kona area

I'm looking for recommendations on how to solve this problem...

A family member of mine just moved to Kailua-Kona this month and I would like to get her a emergency battery "power station" type to her for use in case of power outages. As every battery-powered power station has a LiFEPO4 or lithium ion battery, I can't seem to ship anything from the big "A" to her (is prohibited from shipping). Does anyone have a recommendation for local places in the Kona area where she could get one over there? Does Kona's HD carry any , or are there any other retail places perhaps? Would she have better luck in Hilo?

Assuming there are none, can I send it via UPS? Any locals have thoughts or ideas?
