Hanalei Colony Resort

I see this would be very dependent on the specific unit but what I’m wondering about is the beach that’s right there. I’ve got mobility issues - I know Tunnels is c,one, it is the beach right at this property swimmable? Snorkeling? Thanks.

Cars on the side of the road Kona side

Genuine question but I’ve always wondered why cars are parked on the side of the road in places where there is seemingly nothing to do. Example:

  • random “parking lots” in the middle of lava fields
  • Kua bay gate: cars parked there all day. I thought maybe they came in before the gate opened but then how did they get down?

Where are these people going after they parked?

What's cool to see on Big Island's east coast?

My family and I are kinda circumnavigating Big Island. We're starting from Kona Intl. and heading down 11 to VNP. After staying there for 2 days, we want to continue north and stay one more night before heading to Waikoloa Village. I'm thinking of staying in Hilo and then heading to Waipi'o Valley, but I'm not committed to these yet. What are some must-see/must-stay places on Big Island's east coast?

Edit: Our kids are 11 and 8, if that makes any difference.

One week for Wedding - Sheraton Princess Kaiulani or WayFinder?

Hello everyone! We are traveling to Oahu for our wedding for a week and we have two (fully refundable) hotel bookings for the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani and the Wayfinder hotel in Waikiki. I have stayed at the Sheraton before, but not the recently renovated Wayfinder. The price difference between the two hotels is $1,000 so we would love to have anyone’s thoughts on if it is worth the money or not. Thanks!

Kauai - Accommodations for 8-10 people ?

We don't want to get separate hotel rooms. Any recommendations outside of picking something off of Airbnb/VRBO?

Is it crowded in September?

My husband and I booked our room at Royal Hawaiian Resort and now I’m second guessing our decision. I’ve seen on serval reviews that the beach area in front of the hotel can be heavily crowded. Has anyone stayed in September? We’re just wondering if we should choose a different hotel further down the strip toward diamond head. Any feedback is appreciated!

Planning a trip to Oahu

Hello everyone! I’m planning a surprise trip for my Fiancé and I to Oahu next year. We originally were supposed to go on a cruise but I’m going to cancel it and book a trip to Hawaii instead (he keeps talking about how bad he wants to go).

I have only been once about 20 years ago and he has never been. We plan to spend 3 nights at Aulani at the end of our trip for a more relaxing experience but I’m struggling to plan the first 3 nights of our stay.

We are planning to go in February (our original trip was for my 30th birthday so keeping it the same time to not ruin the cancellation of the cruise) and looking for a recommendation for a hotel (doesn’t have to be on the beach) that won’t break the bank since we are planning a wedding and splurging on Aulani. We plan to sightsee a bit and he isn’t a huge beach person but loves food so not sure we will hang on the beach much before Aulani. I’ve been searching but there’s so many options with reviews all over the map.

Alternatively, should we look into renting a car for those 3 nights, we probably would return it before heading to Aulani. My initial instinct is yes but if we can save money by not renting one then great too.

2 weeks in Hawaii advice needed pls

My partner and I are planning to travel to Hawaii from the UK next Sat (4th May) for about 2 weeks. We are struggling with itinerary as we wanted to do 4 islands but starting to think it could be too much. So we're now considering leaving out the big island and focusing on Kauai, Maui and O'ahu but not sure how to spend and split the time on each. Would anyone be able to advise? Thinking maybe 5 nights Kauai, 4 nights Maui and then 5 nights in Oahu.

We planning to fly in to Kauai and go from via Honolulu.

Hilo Car Rental

Has anyone rented from one of the locations in Hilo recently? How have the lines been? Our flight lands at 7am. It doesn’t look like any of the companies have skip the line or anything. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

Best location for NPs plus watching surfers?

My goals for the trip, see some big wave surfing and visit the two national parks and relax. Can anyone recommend a good central location as a jump off spot? Thanks in advance. Would also like to check out Pearl Harbor, some boat tours and possibly snorkeling.

Help choosing an island for winter vacation

I've been researching like crazy for the past few days and still feel very indecisive. My boyfriend and I will be visiting Hawaii for the first time in mid-January. We will be spending 10-12 nights there, flying in to Oahu and (hopefully) out from another island.

We will start the trip with 5 nights on Oahu to visit family and see the sights. We plan to stay in Waikiki and rent a car: top priorities are beaches and snorkeling, with plans to visit Pearl Harbor, road trip to the North Shore to watch surfing, a couple short hikes, maybe tour Iolani Palace.

I'm torn on which other island to visit for 5-6 nights. I've ruled out Kauai since it seems south Maui or Kona coast will be our best bet for warm, sunny weather in January. We want to have lots of time to relax on a beautiful beach and do some easy snorkeling. Maui looks like the best option for those, but I'm also really interested in VNP and coffee farms on BI.

Which island has better options for snorkeling in the winter? Will we find enough beaches to relax on if we go to BI? Or will we get our fill in Oahu and not need sandy beaches? How is the attitude towards visitors on Maui now? We would be staying near Kihei, away from the devastated area. Budget would also go further on BI (we will not be staying in resorts).

Any suggestions appreciated. Thank you!

Waikiki beach hotel recommendations

Trying to decide where to stay

Beachfront and easy beach access is the top priority followed by at least somewhat modern rooms

Looking at Outrigger Waikiki beach and Moana surf rider but not in love with either of them. Any insight would be appreciated !!

Kalalau Beach - stay a day?

I’m hiking the Kalalau trail in July. I know the solitude of the beach is second to none in Kauai, but is it worth spending a full day there in addition to the two days spent hiking out and back?

For reference I’m in Kauai for 10 days excluding flight days.

Kauai fine dining?

It's my last night as a single traveler and wanted to eat somewhere nice for my last day. Reviews are all over the place and I'm having a tough time narrowing down a spot. I definitely want fresh caught fish. Any suggestions?

I'm close to Lihue

Best family-friendly area to stay on Big Island?

Hello. We are planning on visiting the Big Island in the winter. We will need to rent a condo / house. What area of the island should I be looking in?
We have kids (teens and little ones). Don't want to be in a busy area. Do want to be in walking distance to a nice family-friendly beach. Also trying to entice my parents to come, and they would want a nice, calm area where they can go for lots of walks. Would be nice to be close to something like a farmer's market.

I am currently looking in Kona as I heard that's a nice side of the island. But any recommendations to narrow it down further are welcome and appreciated!

Also if you have any other advice or recommendations for me, would love to hear it. I am just in the beginning stages of planning this vacation.

Sunrise or Sunset Couples Photo Session

Hi all. Apologies for the long post.

I’m surprising my wife with a photo session when we are in Oahu coming up in mid-June. I have already reserved the services of a photographer and looking to gather feedback on possible locations based on some options he provided. I’m currently thinking of a sunset photo shoot for an hour but open to a sunrise session too, though it would require a little juggling of our itinerary not to mention getting the missus up super early on our vacation - Lol. Nevertheless I wanted to ask about the following locations and what you think is best. If it helps, we are staying in Waikiki and will have a rental car for our entire stay, so driving isn’t an issue as much as it is traffic/ drive time and possibly summer crowds.

For sunrise:

Kualoa Beach Park / Waiʻalae Beach Park / Waimanalo Beach

For sunset: Magic Island / Waiʻalae Beach Park

I had asked about the Ko Olina area but was told security is strict and we could get booted. That would suck with the drive all the way out there so that isn’t an option we’re looking at. Unless there is a secret spot we could get to that is open to the public.

Other than that, we’re just looking for a setting that captures the magic of Hawaii and its scenery. Please let me know your thoughts and if you have other suggestions for either sunrise or sunset.

Thank you!

4 Hour layover in HNL. Is it possible to visit Waikiki area ?

Will be flying on Hawaiian Airways from Kauai to Maui mid afternoon on a Friday in mid August. How long will the Uber take me ? How long to get out of airport ? Is this at all doable ? Expectation is to spend about 1.5 hours in Waikiki. 🙏

Edit: Thanks to everyone for their input. After reading all the comments and thinking about it more, I decided not to put myself through the stress express. The traffic and need to go through airport security will likely cause this to not be enjoyable.

Oahu next week for 6 days

Arriving in a week from the mainland in the early afternoon. We have nothing planned that day yet, looking forward to recommendations. We will be touring Pearl Harbor on Saturday, Aloha Kai Luau on Sunday night. One of the days we do plan to visit Kualoa Ranch and maybe parasailing. Also interested in good places to eat for $100-200 budget a day. We want to try some local authentic cuisine.

Haena State Park worth it with shuttle?

My husband and I are going to Kauai at the end of May, and we weren’t able to get the parking passes for Haena State Park. It would be $80 for the two of us for the shuttle passes vs. the $20 for entry/parking. I’m feeling really torn on if we should book the shuttle or skip this activity, but if it’s worth it for the views, we’re willing to pay for it. Hoping to crowdsource some opinions! Info about us: we like moderate hikes, will have a rental car, like beach and forest views, like snorkeling, would probably only do the first two miles instead of the longer waterfall portion (but would consider doing it since the shuttle gives us more time). We are also planning to do mountain tubing, helicopter, and Napali boat tour.

Kaena Point Vehicle type? 🚙

Anyone know what kind of vehicle can make it to the end of the off road part of Kaena Point. I'd like to visit the Albatross. I've hiked it before, but it was long and hot! Would like to bring family so they can appreciate the conservation efforts. Unfortunately, I only have my Prius 🚙😅. I wonder if the road is flat enough for a standard sedan?

National Car Rental Upgrades Question KOA

Hello All,

Appreciate all the help! My wife and I are flying into KOA for the first time to the big island in a few weeks and was looking to rent a vehicle. I was able to get a jeep wrangler through Expedia at Alamo for 7 days at a total of $515.

Now here’s the gamble, I just got status with National through one of my Amex credit cards as an “executive” status. They have a midsize for $400 total for the same time period.

First time using national so not entirely sure how the whole upgrade process works. Do you think it’s worth the gamble to pay less and ask them to upgrade me to a jeep? I mean worst case if I get a midsize, it’s not the end of the world(is it really necessary to have a jeep on the island?).

For people who flew there recently and used national, how are the car selections? Thank you all!!

Oahu and fear of chickens

I’m visiting in a few weeks and I have an intense fear of fowls (chickens, ducks). I go into a panic attack every time there’s a rooster or hen nearby.

I wanted to check out Giovanni’s shrimp truck but I read that there are chickens everywhere.

Any other particular spots on the island that are known to have fowls? I presume they’re most likely at the North Shore.

I don’t wanna pass out on my vacation.

Looking for cheap one night accommodation near Honolulu

We are arriving in Honolulu a day earlier than we had originally planned. (We are able to get there a day earlier now do to schedules shifting and want to take advantage)

We booked an Airbnb for 6 nights originally but now we just need a place to stay for the first night we will be there. (The Airbnb is not available to be extended as it is booked). Are there any good options for a couple that’s relatively cheap?

I saw some hostels for $50 a person which would be fine for us. But wanted to ask around if anyone had any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Volcano National Park: 3-4 Hours

Hello!

Family of 9 (4 adults, 5 kids ages 6-10) will be visiting Hawaii - Big Island for 6 nights. We fly into KOA and setup shop in Waikoloa.

We head over to Hilo side to explore and then stay at an Airbnb for 1 night before flying out of ITO.

We have budgeted 3-4 hours for VNP but wondering if that is enough?

The families are not much of an outdoorsy group, but thought it would at least be nice to stop at VNP and maybe do a very short visit - such as seeing Nāhuku (Thurston Lava Tube) and Puʻuloa Petroglyphs.

Does anyone have any recommendations from their own experiences?

Thank you!

Hurt feral cat

Hi, I’m visiting the Big Island right now. There is a (what I am assuming is feral) cat at the resort I’m staying at, it is hurt really bad. We were sitting at dinner by the pool, there was a little black kitty and we all thought it had a collar on. Turns out it had a gnarly wound on its neck. It looks like it was almost de-gloved around the upper neck/shoulder area. The smell was very offensive, as well. We gave him some food as well as some water and he ate it right up. My problem is that we dont have anything to trap the guy with and I’ve tried calling multiple places, no one is picking up. One place I was able to get ahold of told me that normal procedure is to call the HPD non-emergency line, so I did. They told me to call animal control, animal control is closed. Their voicemail told me to call the non-emergency….Not sure what to do but left a voicemail for the animal control. I’m a huge animal lover and seeing the little guy like that is hurting my heart as I have a black kitty at home, as well. Any help or advice would be welcome. I’m over by Waikoloa beach area.
