The normal way of deleting the folder of apps isn't working for some reason. Basically it's a fresh install and updated M2 Mac Mini.

Not sure if I should be posting here or in r/ios or r/iphone, but long story short, I tried to update my iPhone XS, it had some connection issues so I tried to update it through Finder on my MacBook. The phone is now stuck in recovery mode, and when I click on it in Finder it opens as if it is an empty folder. Not sure what to do and need help, cheers.

EDIT: Restarting the laptop seems to have fixed the issue and I'm now able to update the phone. Might have panicked a tiny bit icl. Will keep you updated.

Hello, I'm trying to ditch iCloud and keep all my data locally on my Mac and its Time Machine backups.

I've already figured out how to do that with Music and Photos, and it works perfectly. But I couldn't find an option to sync my notes, although some websites claim there used to be a flag under the Info tab, but it only shows contacts and calendars. Interestingly, there's no option to sync Reminders either.

How do I sync iOS notes via Finder over USB or over my local WiFi network, if possible?

I am not interested in using a different app or cloud provider. I do not think it is necessary to keep my mostly useless trash in the cloud lol

I recently got one drive in my mac and this is now happening. The cloud symbol keeps appearing and disappearing every second so It keeps causing things to unclick. Meaning I’m basically not able to use my mac. I’ve tried deleting one drive but its telling me that is open and the way to quit it is my clicking on the cloud (one drive) and then going and doing something else, but every-time I click it it doesn’t load and then disappears.

What other solutions are there?

I wanted to disable swap memory on my M1 MacBook Pro, I disabled System Integrity Protection (SIP) from the recovery. After that I booted up into the operating system (MacOS Sonoma) and entered the required commands to disable swap.

After disabling I went to turn System Integrity Protection (SIP) again and, to my shock the boot arguments I entered in order to disable swap, were reset to the default values!

I know this is for the security, but there should be some (harder than normal) way so at least someone can enter the boot argument when it's their choice.

I have no way of turning on System Integrity Protection (SIP) without it making my boot arguments go back to default. If there is a way you're welcome to respond in the comment section.

It's quite a shame really that there is no workaround aside from disabling System Integrity Protection (SIP) all together which I absolutely hate to do but I now have to keep it off in order to keep my boot arguments as I intend them to be. MacOS is a nice operating system but sometimes for not very "normal" users there should be a way to bypass some stuff without sacrificing security measures.

I'm not really sure what community a question like this belongs in, so I'm kinda scattering it across several.

The Issue

Due to circumstances with my vision, looking at white/light surfaces (walls, paper, screens, etc.) is problematic.

I've been using Dark Mode on my iMac for several years now, but some applications still don't use it and PDFs and creating artwork/documents (you can write a document on a black background in Pages, but you can't send it to anyone "normal") have predominantly white backgrounds.

As a result, I've had to keep switching the Invert Colors option off and on based on which application/document is on the screen, using any non-Dark Mode windows at full-screen size (otherwise the Dark Mode backgrounds switch to light). This obviously has the unfortunately side-effect of screwing up the colors and making artwork creation very confusing.

Possible Solutions

I suppose one option would be to use Light Mode on everything and then lower the monitor's brightness, but even in Dark Mode, I can't go higher than level 4 (of 16)–I can only use level 1 in Light Mode. But at that brightness, it's very difficult to read anything.

I'd thought to try buying an external monitor, placing the windows for non-Dark Mode apps on the second screen, and using Invert Colors there. But after ordering the monitor, I started finding comments on the internet saying that this isn't possible to do.

I'm trying applications like BetterDisplay, Black Light, Lunar and Monitor Control, but I can't get them to adjust anything.

I don't want to open the new monitor in case a solution isn’t possible using it (and could then return it), so I've tried by using Airplay to share my screen with an older Sony TV via Apple TV and with a Roku TV to test the apps. Maybe they just don't work with Airplay?

I'd be grateful for any advice on any and all fronts: ways to handle non-Dark Mode apps on a single screen, ways to use two screens to handle non-Dark Mode apps (even ways to actually use the display apps I mentioned if you're familiar with them), or alternate methods you've found to help with brightness/eye-'remnant' issues on a computer.

what is the easiest way to switch between MacMini and MacBook pro. The idea is to not lose work continuity. I use the MacMini desktop for dev work and would l like continue working MacBook pro , when not with the desktop. Anyone who has experience with this? best practices suggestions?

For a couple weeks my 14 inch MBP (2021, M1 Pro) has had this issue with connecting to any wireless access point, be it my home router or even coffee shop WiFi or my phone's hotspot. Basically, for a few hours everything will work fine, but after a certain amount of time (still not sure how long), every app on my mac except for Safari will lose internet access, and I haven't been able to fix it without a restart. I suspect it might have something to do with DHCP, but I have tried everything from renewing leases to manually setting the IP. I'm not running a VPN or anything related, and my firewall is not set to block anything out of the ordinary. If anybody has suggestions I would greatly appreciate them.

Also updated to latest stable macOS (14.4.1 (23E224)) with no improvement. There's another admin user on the mac and it does not have this issue, which makes me believe it is specific to my admin account.

I saw someone sharing their screen yesterday, and he had a feature that I'm looking to enable on my Mac.

He had multiple Excel files open, and when he hovered over his Excel icon in the dock, all open files fanned out into an accordion-type list.

I figured out how to minimize open windows to the dock, but in order to see which windows are open I have to right click and choose from a standard menu list. Does anyone know how to enable the feature I'm describing?

Hi everyone, I own the old Pixelmator version (not PixelmatorPro) which I bought several years ago and used a few months ago for the last time. Now, when trying to open it, the icon jumps as usual, the dialogue shows up for a second or so. Then it shows "Pixelmator was ended unexpectedly."

Is there a way to still use Pixelmator on Sonoma? I don't want to spend 60€ on the Pro app.

I recently bought a new Macbook Pro and I'm using MacOS (Sonoma) for the first time. I also use a Windows 11 system and I use OneDrive to sync my files.

I tried experimenting with Symlinks so that I can sync my "Onedrive/Desktop" folder across my Windows and MacOS systems, and have the MacOS Desktop symlink into the OneDrive/Desktop folder. I copied some instructions I found online that involved using the Terminal.

It hasn't completely worked. I now have a "Desktop" icon on my MacOS Desktop (which I believe is a Symlink file) which I can't delete. Finder prompts me for a password, then says "The operation can't be completed because you don't have permission to access some of the items".

I can't now put files on my MacOS desktop; I get a message which says "The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -8004).".

Also, the files aren't syncing from my Onedrive/Desktop to the MacOS desktop.

I need to return to my original state before I fucked it all up. How do I remove this Symlink, and restore my MacOS desktop to default, please?

So is it just me, or have alert Sound Effects stopped working in 14.4.1? I can’t get them to play even thru my MacStudio Speaker… and no, no headphones are plugged in….

I got a premimum iCLoud to back up my mac and i absolutely hate it (esp for my desktop and document) but I am not sure how to go back? I am willing to keep iCloud for my pictures and contacts and stuff but want to just have all of my documents saved to my computer and off the cloud... how do I do this? Is there a way for me to just take them off the cloud? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have an M2 2022 MacBook Air & last night I updated from Ventura to Sonoma. I really want to revert it & I am wondering if there is a way?

I don’t have a time machine back up of my old system, unfortunately. Although, I am not concerned about resetting or losing any data as I have everything saved elsewhere.

I tried going to recovery mode but there was no option for Ventura. I also tried installing Ventura to put it onto a USB, but the installer was not able to be downloaded.

Is there anything I can do?

I have a M2 Pro Mac Mini (Sonoma) and it cannot detect my external webcam. It can be detected by the system, it can be used during accessibility setup and it can detect head pointer. It just cannot be used for FaceTime or any other apps.

Anyone has any idea what is the cause and remedy for this?

As noted, chrome won't open reddit.com but safari does!

Running on a MacBook Pro 20212 A1728 with Bug Sur via OCLP. Chrome version is Version 124.0.6367.119 (Official Build) (x86_64) and is up to date.

No issues getting access via Safari. Ping to www.reddit.com works fine.

No other issues with any other web sites on Chrome, just reddit.

Any ideas?

I’m trying to connect my mac to my xbox. It’s a Macbook pro 2015 and running the latest update. The HDMI lead is definitely working so I tried going into display settings and holding the option key but when i do this the detect display key doesn’t appear. I have checked that my keyboard is set up right and the option key is definitely working.

Anyone got advice on what’s up?

Lately documents that I've been working on on my laptop have been taking much longer to load. I noticed that every time I make any change at all it syncs to my icloud. I tried to turn off this syncing and it removed all my files in my documents folder. I assume this means that the whole folder is stored in iCloud. I want to be able to access my files from my phone, but I don't want to have the documents themselves saved in the cloud but rather on my computer. Ideally I would have the cloud update once an hour or so to sync to the changes with the documents stored on my computer. I don't want to have to have wifi to access my documents on my laptop. Does anybody have any suggestions regarding how I should solve this?

Considering first mac (an M1/M2/M3 series rather than intel one) but have the issue of worrying about occasionally wanting to run random little windows programs. How well do the options for running windows apps work?

Hey I came from windows to a m2 MacBook Pro, and the only thing I am missing is that in discord calls I did not need to use headphones when in my laptop and the other people would not hear themselves nor anything else that could be playing in my pc. But now in macOS even with Voice Isolation they can still hear themselves. I have tried to use macOS built-in Voice Isolation and even installed krisp but that one says it only works with headsets. Any help in dealing with this would be appreciated.
