macOS Updates

Hey all,

I’ve been trying to get a clear answer to this but haven’t been able to confirm yet. If a user is on macOS 14.7, can they jump directly to 15.1? Or do they need to first update to 15.0 and then proceed to 15.1? Essentially, is it possible to skip directly from a minor update to the next major release?

Is there a workaround to make it so you can open system settings in a full panel window?

I have been trying to find ways to make the Mac experience a little less convoluted as of lately. Rectangle drove me crazy when dragging a window up to the menu bar to snap it to a full panel bc it would open Mission Control. I found out that Sequoia somehow in 2024 (let that sink in) introduced OS integrated windows snapping, a simple concept Windows released over FIFTEEN years ago.

I installed the new OS thinking it would correct the annoyance of dragging windows to the full bar only to launch MC. I find out that I have to have a second virtual screen enabled on my laptop to use Apple's window snapping feature and that Rectangle wouldn't open MC if I disabled this annoying MC default setting I didn't know about. This sent me on a crusade to finally figure out how to correct all the little things that have slightly inconvenienced or annoyed me about this OS since I started using it less than a year ago. I needed a laptop last second for school and this was the best deal considering its processing, quality-housing, screen and keyboard.

** ↓ Start below here ↓ – At least, if you don't want to read my dumb rant lol

I figured out basically everything that annoyed me since then except one thing that seems so weird to hardwire into the OS. For whatever reason, Apple Devs decided that being able to make the Systems Settings window take up more than half a full window panel wasn't something worth integrating.

I know this is nitpicky and not a dealbreaker, but I thought it would be cool if there was some sort of terminal/python workaround, GitHub software, something I could use to make it so the Systems Settings window could snap to the full screen.

Obviously no snapping programs can do this including Rectangle or Moom, I tried that already.

Thanks!!!

Better screen sharing than VNC?

So I've bought a M1 mac mini to play around with ios/macos development, and I'd like to set it so that mac is has only a power cable connected (ethernet optional, I'd rather have less cables than more if possible) and I'm using it remotely from my main linux pc.
I've set up screen sharing in mac options, set resolution to my monitor's native one (1920x1200), and although it works, it's very laggy.

Running iperf3, I've got stable 95 Mbits/sec connection between my pc and mac over wifi. Over ethernet (pc and mac connected to same switch), I've got 950 Mbits. I believe even wifi should be usable for screen sharing there, but even on ethernet it lags.

At my job I'm using xrdp between two linux systems and I'm very satisfied, but it appears that there is no xrdp server available on mac (googling for xrdp either shows expensive propetiary solutions or outdated unofficial xrdp one). So, are there any other options?

Sequoia: Improved Font Rendering (3840x1600)?

Just upgraded from my 2019 Intel 16" MBP running Sonoma to a 14" M4 Pro MBP and Sequoia.

What I noticed is that fonts on my 38" Ultrawide running in 3840x1600 look much crispier than before. Not that it was bad under Sonoma but I noticed the improvement right away.

What are your experiences?

What the f is wrong with the passwords app?

I changed my username on a website and set up two-factor authentication using the codes function of the Apple Password app as the authenticator. This worked without any issues. After I edited the username in the associated entry manually, the code entry disappeared. There was no warning. I tried changing the username back, but that’s not possible. As a result, I locked myself out of the website account. Apple Support couldn’t help me.

Possible to change system printer dialog box to Word?

I noticed that Microsoft Word uses its own special printer dialog box when printing documents, and I was wondering if there is a way to make it so that it can be used as the system default printer dialog box when printing from other apps or files?

When viewing a PDF file in Preview, the shortcut to delete a page used to bed CMD + Backspace.

However, with a recent update I noticed the shortcut has been chanage to just Backspace.

Is there anyway to change it back to CMD + Backspace?

Is it just me or does the emoji menu and selected emojis take a long time to load.

It's less than a second for the menu to pop up but when I, say, right click it happens instantly.

Adding an emoji from this menu takes perhaps more than a second!

Does anyone else get this, and does it bother them?

Using a Macbook Pro with M1 Max.

The different flavors of all the MacOSes

I’m trying to wrap my head around similarities and differences among MacOS release versions, not detailed, but high level.

15 Sequoia, 14 Sonoma, 13 Ventura, 12 Monterey, 11 Big Sur.

Are these basically similar with minor tweaks and adjustments here and there, or are there gross differences between them? I get the impression that in some cases some of these major releases differences are quite significant, like breaking software functionality if you try upgrading from version N to N+1.

In the seemingly eternal divide between keyboard users and mouse users

Especially on the Mac, fingers on the home row, I think about something, and—tap tap tap—it’s done.

Likewise, on any computer, if my go to is always preferring and using the mouse, I think about doing something, and—taking my hand off the keyboard, grabbing the… where’s the mouse… there it is, and let’s see… which menu was that under, oh, yeah there it is… and select this option and wait for the dialog box, type in a file name and set the right startup options and… let’s see do I want it to be black and white or do I want color, and double check again and click “Okay” and there it is starting up, and—it’s done.

Even the length of the two paragraphs above mirror what’s happening.

Here’s the hard questions:

Are keyboard users aware of keyboard-vs.-mouse differences?

Are mouse users aware of keyboard-vs.-mouse differences?

Is there awareness in both but mouse users have simply decided it’s not that important?

Is it some other factor?

Are you a keyboard or mouse user?

I’m looking at its underlying psychology or sociology.

Make sidebar show on mounted DMG and folders open in same window?

I've created a DMG with some file on it to be able to take back and forth (and view on my iPad), but I can't see how to make the Finder window appear like it normally does. And, when I click the folder, it opens up in a new window. I don't have the same issue with Sparse Image format, but this is annoying. Any fixes? Or did I set it up wrong to start with?

Transfer data from an external drive to Macbook Pro running Sonoma.

Dear all,

Hopefully someone can help me.

An old Macbook Pro using Yosemite has definitely stopped working and would now like to transfer data such as music, videos etc. from the SanDisk Solid State Drive hard drive of this old Macbook Pro to my other and newer Macbook Pro running Sonoma.

I have connected the SanDisk hard drive via a USB-C to Sata cable, but the hard drive does not show up in Finder or on my Desktop. I do come across the SanDisk hard drive in Disk Utility, but have really no idea what to do next.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Screen recording Google Meet in Safari (or any other service for that matter). Why does it not record my microphone input?

This is my very first experience with macOS (MacBook w/ M4 Pro - 15.1.1) and I apologise in advance is this has been discussed plethora of times or is just common knowledge (for Safari) but I've noticed that when I record my screen during Google Meet calls (or any other service - Brave Talk, for instance) on Safari, It captures everything except my microphone input. Interestingly, I've observed this abhorrent behaviour is idiosyncratic to Safari and microphone input is recorded perfectly fine when I'm using other browsers.

I predominantly use QuickRecorder but this is reproducible even with vanilla Quicktime or OBS. Permissions are also set to allow for microphone (people would hear me otherwise if it weren't)

Is anybody else facing the same issue?

I want to slave my old iMac to a Mac Mini. How do I do it?

I’ve gotten as much life as I’ve can from my iMac. The hard drive died and I replaced it. This one is getting to the point where it’s so slow and software no longer updates because the operating system is too old.

Trying to block websites using terminal, not working 100%

I know I've done this method back in 2017-2018 and it worked, but for some reason it is not taking on this go around all the time. I go to terminal and do the following steps. Any ideas why it only works sometimes?

  • Type or paste sudo nano /etc/ hosts and press Return.
  • Type in your admin password.
  • Look for the line that starts 255.255.255.255
  • Use the down arrow key to move the cursor to that line and press Return to create an empty line above it.
  • Type: 127.0.01 followed by the tab key and the URL of the site you want to block.
  • Press Return.
  • Repeat steps 6 and 7 for every site you want to block.
  • When you’re finished, press and hold Control and O to save the file and then Control and X to close it.
  • Finally, clear your Mac’s DNS cache by typing this command in Terminal followed by Return: sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder
  • Quit Terminal.

2019 iMac running on Sequoia 15.1 keeps getting disconnected from the internet

I have been having this issue for over a year now. I just manage it since I use my iMac mostly for Photoshop and Lightroom. But it's really getting on my nerves lately and I tried every possible solution out of google but the problem still persists. It shows I am connected to my wifi, but I am not connected to the internet. Sometimes renewing DHCP Lease works, sometimes, not. I also changed DNS servers. I would have to restart and it connects again. And then I get disconnected again. All other devices are working fine. I have my iPad and MacBook connected to the same network and they are fine. But my iMac will just randomly get disconnected. Maybe somebody out there has the same issue and found a solution.

Can you make Finder windows remember their size for a specific folder?

The one thing that annoys me about macos is the way Finder handles / saves window sizes.

I have some additional Folders inside my home folder and want Finder to remember the window size, so that everytime i open it, i can see all folders in it.

Sometimes when i open Finder in another Directory, and then click on my home folder in the side panel, it now takes this as the new default size, and when i enter my home folder again, the window is too small.

Is there some way around this? I tried write-protecting the .DS_store file using the terminal, but that didnt seem to work.

is there any way around this behaviour?

Arrow keys now move the current window to the direction of the key pushed. Is there a way to disable this?

It is causing my stuff to jump around the screen when using arrow keys for in-software tools and and shortcuts. I’d like to disable this shortcut feature.

“IOS Files” saving as .TXT files?

Not sure if this is the best place to ask this, if not let me know.

On my Mac I found “IOS Files” in the saved memory.

I downloaded these files into a folder. Within the folder are numerous sub-folders labeled with different random strings of numbers and letters. Within the sub-folders are numerous .TXT files. When downloading/opening the files, I see they are old pictures and videos I had on an old iPhone. Presumably I believe these files were an iPhone back up from some years ago. I no longer have some of these specific pictures and videos anywhere else other than within these iOS files.

The .TXT files that I know were pictures can be converted to JPEGs no problem, so that’s great.

The problem is with some of the .TXT files that I know were videos. When converting, I can only convert to JPEG or HEIC. I’ve tried an online TXT to MOV/MP4 converter, which does not work. I’ve also tried iMazing to see if I can upload the files to the iPhone, this doesn’t work as well.

Doesn’t anyone know how I can get these TXT files to return/convert to the video files I knew they were?

Any advice, tips, or suggestions is appreciated. TIA

Hard drive mode connection doesn't work

HI all ...

I have a new MB Pro, M4 and want to transfer data from old one, Pro 16" 2019. I have started the old one into hard disc mode (power and USB symbol visible) and connected both with an Apple USB-C cable. The new one complains about non working Thunderbold and no disc is visible. Any ideas what's going on?

Thanks in advance for any advise.

Manually set the range of refresh rates for Adaptive Sync

Hi!

Background:

I just bought a Mac Mini M4, main reason was it having HDMI 2.1. I want to use it for Geforce Now Ultimate on an S90C Samsung TV, to play with all the features enabled (all of them at once, not some of them):

  • 100+hz refresh rate
  • VRR
  • HDR
  • 4k

I have an Ultra High Speed certified HDMI cable. Unfortunately I've run into a problem: I'm unable to turn on both HDR and Adaptive Sync at the same time in 4k in the Mac display settings menu.

I did some testing and I noticed that I also can't enable HDR if I set the refresh rate to static 144Hz, but I can enable it as soon as I drop the refresh rate to 120Hz. Because Adaptive Sync in my setup shows a refresh rate range from 48-144 it suggests to me that I can't enable HDR with Adaptive Sync because of that ceiling value of 144Hz for Adaptive Sync.

After some digging I found that the Samsung TV might be doing some false advertising about it's HDMI 2.1 support and in reality the bandwidth of HDMI is capped which means that at 144Hz there is not enough bandwidth for HDR.

I think what would resolve the issue and allow me to have all the features at once would be to change the refresh rate range of Adaptive Sync, from 48-144Hz to 48-120Hz, since I'm able to enable HDR at 120Hz.

Question:

Is there any tool/app/config/script I could use to manually set the ceiling refresh rate value for Adaptive Sync? E.g. the Mac Mini wants to use 48-144Hz as the Aaptive Sync refresh rate range, but I'd like to set that to 48-120Hz.

Any suggestions are appreciated, I have 14 days to return the Mac if I can't make it work :D

MacOS Sequoia (15.1.1) - Does not display sample rate & bit depth of an audio file when "getting info"?

https://preview.redd.it/y6cpf5b9rl4e1.png?width=530&format=png&auto=webp&s=3b804b9be7117128fcf100dfb9d80f9a930c4f27

Dear Sequoia users,

I updated my OS recently (14" M1 Max, 32GB) & I noticed that none of my audio files display their sample rate and bit depth when "getting info" about a file. As shown in the screenshot, none of the audio files (mp3 / wav / flac / aiff) display their additional characteristics.

Has anyone else encountered this problem?

Thanks!
