RANT: Rainbow Drive In, we are done with visiting you in Kapahulu randomly once every other year with hope that you've recaptured even 50% of your former delicious magic.

But the truth is, you haven't been enjoyable since the early noughts. Nostalgia from last century cannot make up for how inedible your food is now.

If someone put a gun to my head and forced me to eat there, maaaaaybe I'd order the chili or a Rainbow Royal and fries with a slush float, but I'd still need to take Tums every three hours for the rest of the day. Every single protein on your mixed plate, which is now $15 if you add gravy, is drier than three tablespoons of kinako taken straight.

(yes, I know there are lots of other places to eat for the price, but husband and I were in the neighborhood. you know the saying, bumbai you learn? well, bumbai was yesterday afternoon. should have just gone to the little Vietnamese place a couple blocks down or to Diamond Head Grill or to Hana No Sato on Kapahulu. sigh.)

ETA Rainbows is still family owned. Third gen now runs the place

ETA No 2, off topic: AAAAAAH DAT FAKAH WENT PUNAHOU!!!***

***I'd say something similar if he went to Iolani or Farrington or Kahuku or wherever.

Looking for a decent barber/barber shop that doesn’t charge much. Have a wedding coming up that I’m working and told I need to look sharp. Job will be out in Kaka’ako area and would love to find someone or some place that can do current trendy hair styles. Trying to get lined up a day or two before while setting up.

Looking to pay $30 (without tip) but price is negotiable.

Event Space for Artificial Superintelligence Research Event in Honolulu

Hi everyone,

My organization is planning an event in honolulu. But I'm having a slight issue with looking for an event space. I was hoping someone can suggest.

It's academic research although for the general public, so looking for an event space that fits this type of research event. It needs to host 100+ people. And we need to be able to host our own bar (this is what prevents us from using waikiki hotels as they require all food and drinks come from them).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Island Life Solutions: Dishwasher & Humidity-Friendly Towels

https://preview.redd.it/rjk9jr6khjqc1.jpg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8e77abaa706dd9af2ed4266fdb9e08c45e19b1cd

Moving back home, I've come across quite a few challenges, so I wanted to share a couple of my solutions! Feel free to share yours!!

Rented an older home with no dishwasher. Since my wife and I care for my elderly parents, we have 4 adults in the home and no time to be handwashing everything. We got this dishwasher (found on FB Marketplace for half price) and this faucet which makes hookup seamless.

We moved with thick, cushy towels and quickly realized that they would stink after a couple of days due to the humidity. After some research, we bought these Sandcloud towels that are super thin, dry quickly and don't stink. We still wash them weekly, but they're fantastic. Great quality and absorbent.

So, let's hear your advice! Share links! Mahalo in advance!

Pet Direct Release From Airport, Puppy

Aloha, I live in Hawaii and I am in the process of purchasing a new pup from the mainland. I believe at 3 months they can start the rabies vaccine, correct? However, will they be able to get the booster 1 month after that according to a manufacturer (which rabies vaccine manufacturers will allow a booster for a pup within a month after the 1st one?). And at what point do they get the rabies antibody test? Which lab has the fastest turnaround time for a reading?

I am trying to time this so I can book a flight to retrieve the pup and return with a "direct release" stamp of approval. Also, the people i bought the pet from are going to be doing all of this for me, bless them. Can anyone help me figure out a good timeline to give these people to get things done for direct release if my dog was born on feb. 13th? I have the animal quarantine checklist but it doesn't say "when" they should get the antibody reading (after the 1st vaccination or what? you know?) Any help would be awesome! Warmest Aloha!

UAVs Over Makaha/Waianae

Drones Patrolling Waianae / Makaha

Considering these alarming encounters and the sentiments echoed by residents, it becomes increasingly apparent that the unchecked proliferation of drones in our urban towns poses a significant threat to the privacy, safety, and well-being of our community members. Therefore, it is imperative to address these concerns through the implementation of stringent regulations and enforcement mechanisms.

  1. Invasion of privacy: According to a report by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), drones equipped with high-resolution cameras have the capability to infringe upon individuals' privacy rights by capturing images and videos without consent. In a study conducted by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), it was found that drones can operate at altitudes and distances that are virtually undetectable to individuals on the ground, exacerbating concerns regarding unwarranted surveillance and privacy violations.

  2. Surveillance concerns: Continuous drone surveillance in urban towns raises significant apprehensions about mass surveillance and its potential implications for civil liberties. Research published in the Journal of Law, Technology & Policy underscores the need for regulatory frameworks that address the growing prevalence of drones in public spaces and mitigate the risks associated with indiscriminate surveillance, which could erode trust in governmental institutions and foster a culture of surveillance.

  3. Data security risks: The collection of data by drones introduces inherent risks to data security and confidentiality. A study conducted by the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) highlights the susceptibility of drone-captured data to unauthorized access and exploitation, necessitating robust data protection measures and encryption protocols to safeguard sensitive information from breaches and cyberattacks.

  4. Noise pollution: The operation of drones in urban environments contributes to noise pollution, disrupting the tranquility and quality of life for residents. Research published in the Journal of Environmental Management emphasizes the adverse effects of noise pollution on public health, including increased stress levels, sleep disturbances, and cognitive impairments, underscoring the importance of mitigating noise emissions from drone activities through regulatory interventions.

  5. Safety hazards: In densely populated urban areas like Waianae and Makaha, the operation of drones poses tangible safety risks, including the potential for collisions with buildings, vehicles, or pedestrians. A study conducted by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) highlights the need for comprehensive risk assessments and safety protocols to mitigate the hazards associated with drone operations in congested airspace and urban environments.

  6. Regulatory challenges: Existing laws and regulations may not adequately address the complex challenges posed by drones in urban settings, leading to regulatory gaps and enforcement difficulties. Research published in the Harvard Journal of Law & Technology underscores the necessity for adaptive regulatory frameworks that accommodate technological advancements and address emerging concerns related to drone usage, including privacy, safety, and airspace management.

  7. Wildlife disturbance: Drones can disrupt local wildlife in urban areas, causing stress and disturbances to animals' natural habitats. Studies conducted by environmental organizations such as the National Audubon Society highlight the adverse impacts of drone activities on nesting birds, marine mammals, and other wildlife species, necessitating protective measures and habitat conservation strategies to mitigate ecological disruptions.

  8. Negative impact on tourism: The pervasive presence of drones in urban towns like Waianae and Makaha could detract from the tourism experience, particularly for visitors seeking serene and authentic cultural experiences. Market research conducted by tourism agencies underscores the importance of preserving the aesthetic appeal and natural beauty of destination sites, highlighting the need for regulatory frameworks that balance the potential benefits of drone technology with the preservation of local ecosystems and community values.

Serious question, what do all these out of state ‘influencers’ do to afford Hawaii?

Disclaimer: I am not Hawaiian or know much about the state other than visiting several times

I see posts a lot on social media about influencers and they all seem to live lavish lives. Mainly the ‘photography’ type influencers and they seem to mainly live in the North Shore of Oahu. They all have the same exact aesthetic.

What do these people do for a living to afford living there? Or do they all live in awful conditions and just don’t show it on social media ?

I imagine locals get by with generational houses, but how on earth these out of state people get by is beyond me.

Is there a lumen limit for headlight brightness in Hawaii?

Curious to know what's the brightest lights I'm legally allowed to buy and install onto my car's front low beam headlights.

Looking to get some legal H11s.

And do they have to be halogen? Or are LEDs okay as long it's below a certain brightness?

Edit: it seems there is a misconception that I am trying to be one of those annoying people who want to blind other drivers. Sorry but I was just trying to figure out the brightest light I could have for safety purposes that would still be legal. If I really wanted to blind others, I'd opt for illegal lights. And my question about LEDs is legit, I was just going for safety and wasn't sure if they were illegal or not.

Any explanation for the fireworks tonight?

It's been quiet the past few months, so I was caught off guard by a sudden bout of fireworks tonight. Is there any reason why this is happening? Any significant local/global holidays or events that could explain the noise?

I just want to know so that way I know when to put on my earplugs (I have sensory issues and I can't listen to sudden, unexpected loud noises.)

I’m considering checking out the Young Professionals program of the Hawaii Chamber of Commerce since they seem to have a lot of events and networking opportunities. Have any of you had good/bad experiences with them and is it worth becoming a member?

Katsudon?

My Grandmother (94) loves katsudon. She probably asks for it at least once a week. Pre pandemic this was not an issue. But with the closing of a lot of restaurants and Ala Moana changing every month, the few places where I could find it have closed or changed their menu.

I’m hoping people on the Reddit community have a place they know still has it. We live in Hawaii Kai, so closer is better. But for my gma, I would go wherever you recommend.

Thank you very much for your suggestions and recommendations.

Should I go to KawaiiKon?

Should I go to KawaiiKon? I'm conflicted about whether I should spend $50 to go there or save my money for other things.

The only reason why I want to go there is because Lizzie Freeman (the voice of Pomni from Digital Circus and ENA) is going to be there. Other than that, I don't know what else to do there, as I'm not into anime.

What do all of you think I should do? Is it worth it?

UPDATE: I'm not going. I'm saving my money for future events :)

Trying to get in contact with Dr at Queens please help

Hi,

So I saw a doctor affiliated with Queens at an outpatient practice 2012-2014… this doctor left that practice around 2014 and is now/and has been a hospitalist at Queen’s since that time. I saw this doctor on a biweekly/monthly basis during that entire time, and he basically saved my life dealing with a mysterious illness. Apparently when he left, he took his records with him. So now I’m trying to file my VA disability claim and have ZERO WAY TO CONTACT this guy and keep being given the run around so I’m pretty frustrated at this point.

I’ve called Queens records who say supposedly there is no way to give messages to doctors, but that I have to get those private records from him. I call BS. 2 weeks going back and forth with different departments, no callbacks, no nothing. BTW I live in Chicago otherwise I’d go in myself!

So I’m at a loss. I’m sure he would have no problem and I’m willing to leave my info so the burden of contact is on him but don’t know how to get this done.

Having the VA pull them for me will create more problems. 1. They won’t make as much of the effort I’ve already put through to get these records. 2. Submitting my claim without them isn’t even a viable option. ESP if I don’t want to be queued for years.

Is there ANYONE? That works at QMC that can hand a freaking sticky note to this doctor with a message to give me a call?? Or help me in anyways?! I’m frustrated and very desperate at this point.
