(HELP) Puakenikeni Browning

So I’ve been trying to make puakenikeni lei’s recently from the tree in my backyard. After picking, cutting and rinsing the flowers, they keep browning.

The first time I thought I left some in a thin layer of water as I cut the other ones. By the time I looked, they had already browned.

The second time which is today, I rinsed shortly then put inside a plastic bag, but they browned within 15 minutes.

Does anyone know why this is and how to prevent browning before making a lei?

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Vanilla orchid donation to nursery/community garden?

I have a vanilla orchid that I've been taking care of for over 4 years, and through a few re-pottings and one bit if pruning, it's just too much for the tiny apartment life I live. The gnats are just too much (no lanai), and it really needs a bigger space to thrive and have a chance to actually flower.

Will a nursery ir gardening club take it for free if I just show up and give ut to them? Or just give it to someone in a community garden? I really don't want to throw it away, and no one O know wants it.

I don't want to deal with FB Marketplace or meeting a stranger. I just want to know if there's a place on Oahu where I can donate this vanilla orchid and give it a good home.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Growing hapuu on a lava shelf or solid surface -- how much soil is needed?

We have ample hapuu on this Volcano property, but want to convert a section of a parking lot, solid base coarse, to ferns. The material is too dense to dig holes. We are thinking of dumping piles of dirt for each fern, say minimum 3 feet deep and 6 feet across. Or build a rock wall 3 feet high in rectangular shape, 4 ft. by 10, and then fill with dirt and then plant 5-6 hapuu inside.

We want the hapuu to grow large eventually, at least 1 feet diameter and 6-8 feet tall trunk. Anyone have experience with this?

Pahoa, Big Island: Sunday food forest class & tour, FREE plants & cuttings

Pahoa Urban Food Forest (PUFF) hosts events the second Sunday of each month, exploring various aspects of permaculture and living sustainably with the land. Each event includes a discussion, a tour of our developing food forest & our perennial edibles, and free keiki of useful plants.

This month: Get an introduction to the permaculture design framework—its ethics & principles, and commonly used techniques. We'll focus on food forests and perennial polycultures as the easiest way to grow food without needing to import resources.

DAY: Sunday, April 14
CLASS: 11 AM til noon. Introduction to permaculture, food forests, and perennial polycultures.
TOUR: noon til 1, with time to chat or wander more afterwards.
PLANT GIVEAWAY: 1 PM
WHERE: Pahoa Urban Food Forest (PUFF), between Habitat Tattoo and the County Council building. (The building doesn't have any identifying signs yet.) Walk through the side gate to find us.
ADDRESS: 15-2881 Pahoa Village Rd, Pahoa
PARK: Across the street in the parking lot next to NAPA Auto Parts.

We hold regular work parties. If you'd like to learn hands-on, get in touch to find out our days and times!

We'll share seeds and starts of several species, including:

Ulu "Ma'afala" seedlings - Artocarpus communis
Rainforest plum - Eugenia candolleana - small fruit tree, supposed to be one of the best tasting Eugenias
Cabeluda - Myrciaria glazioviana - jaboticaba relative with good-tasting yellow fruit
Blackberry jam fruit - Randia formosa - 5?' shrub gardenia relative, with small fruit with pulp tasting like blackberry jam
Ice cream bean - Inga edulis (probably) - great nitrogen-fixing chop and drop, and yummy fruit if it's allowed to become a large tree
Achira "Verde" seedling - Canna edulis - low maintenance herbaceous root crop, biomass, and ornamental
Jamaican cherry - Muntingia calabura - tree maybe 30' (can be kept smaller), small tasty fruit
Malabar chestnut - Pachira glabra - easy tree with chestnut-ish nuts (but high in cyclopropene fatty acids which may or may not be harmful, so probably best eaten in moderation rather than as a major staple crop)
Mitsuba - Cryptotaenia japonica - AKA Japanese parsley, 2' herbaceous plant.
Pigeon pea - Cajanus cajan
Air potato bulbils - Dioscorea bulbifera
Mint potato - Plectranthus rotundifolius
Bele AKA edible hibiscus - Abelmoschus manihot
Chaya - Cnidoscolus chayamansa
Cassava - Manihot esculenta
Longevity spinach - Gynura procumbens
Katuk - Sauropus androgynus
...and more...

Hope you can join us for any or all of it!

Got some Mountain Apples from Etsy. Turns out the dude is in Mililani! Maybe you’re on here, maybe not, but the one I put in dirt is **THRIVING**!

After about two weeks, this bad boy is taking off. And if the guy isn’t here, at least y’all can see my sweet new Malay Apple sapling.

What is this red bug? Found on a cacao tree. Hamakua coast, Big Island, approx 400' elevation. At first I though a bit of fungus but then a couple moved.

Compost club

Does anyone know if the Windward zero waste compost club is still operating and open to new members? I was hoping to join but I can’t find much info

I saw that they were barred from continuing at Kainalu Elementary cause of the continuous complaints from one neighbor

Millipede Infestation

Hey there! So I am experiencing an issue with a millipede infestation in one of my outdoor garden boxes. i am clearing it out and resoiling for the next plant season but before that they were eating my strawberries and so I decided that they cannot stay. So far I have been raking the soil so that they are unburied and spraying Triazicide on the soil but they keep coming back and it seems like there might be more everyday. I don't think it is a good idea to keep spraying like this for the soil's health. Does anyone have any other suggestions of maybe something more natural or another pesticide that will get rid of them? I can wait to plant in this box but my seedlings are getting stronger and closer to the need to be planted. Thank you in advance for any suggestions! Mahalo

Unexpectedly okay?

Non-trellised tomato.

I need to ask for advice on water catchment systems on a SFH w/no rain gutters, but the laundry basin is diverted to the yard via gravity, and I have a dishwashing setup in the garage.

I’m on a limited budget, but recognize that Honolulu BOWS gross meters sewage use when I water my yard, but such is life.

We have a standing deep freezer & a food saver, and I have great neighbors, but am curious about storage and canning, dehydrating, etc.

I’m very thankful to try and fail and even gave a yard, but really lack the expertise to can and wax my own gravy, jelly and jams.

Hedges vs pigs

Aloha kakou,

What kind (if any) of plants can be used as a hedge row that would grow thick enough to keep pigs away?

Located east side, real rainy.

Mahalo!

What is the dense clumpy grass?

I came across these unusual grass clumps on the Big Island, near Waimea. Can anyone identify them? Are they an invasive species planted to provide cattle feed? They seem to be on a relentless march! Comments appreciated. 0 1 • Share
