Lisa Stansfield • Affection {1989}

Bruh, this me steppin’ back in time and immersing myself in this electrifying era that gave birth to the groundbreaking "neo soul" movement. The mid-80s in the UK were on fire 🔥🔥🔥 with an unparalleled vibe that set the stage for a musical revolution. From the soulful melodies of Lisa Stansfield (pictured above) and the captivatin’ beats of Soul II Soul, to the raw talent of Terrence Trent D’Arby (not to mention the homies James Brown dance moves) and the mesmerizing voice of Sade Adu (timeless), the scene was bursting with talent. Caron Wheeler, Omar, Young Disciples, Jamiroquai, and countless others added their own sauce to this musical recipe.

Meanwhile, in my city of Chicago, house music reigned supreme, weaving its way into the cultural fabric of the city- it was our heartbeat. It became a part of our DNA, and this british wave paid homage to Chicago by infusing their sound with the soul of that iconic Chicago House Sound. As a former House DJ, I could ignite a party by spinning these tracks, treating the crowd to a sophisticated sound that built anticipation before hittin em in the gut with a 120 bpm beat with a bottom that would shake the dance floor {I was more Ron Hardy than Frankie Knuckles}

Now, as a seasoned 🤣🤣🤣 54-year-old, I find myself transported back in time, reflecting on a period that holds a special place in my heart ❤️. I long for a resurgence of that extraordinary era, but I wonder if we will ever witness such a remarkable time again.

In closing, i’m going to let the needle drop, pump of the volume (another nod to that time), spark a J, put my feet up, enjoy this Cali breeze, and be thankful that I grew up during a remarkable time for Soul and Dance music.

Did you know the WEIRDEST vinyl records came from a 1980's garage located in Hollywood, USA? HOLLYWOODS WEIRDEST RECORD LABEL is a short film about the world of outsider art in vinyl records and LA's underground metal scene! Turn it up to 11!

Off the Wall Vinyl Requests

What off the wall album would you like to see pressed on vinyl that you know with 100% certainty will never, ever be pressed on vinyl?

I’ll start, I loved the Rockabye Baby series when my girls were babies. Radiohead, The Cure, Weezer. I played them all.

If I saw the Radiohead version at my local shop on vinyl, I would buy it in a heartbeat. It’s so soothing!

What's up with people hating for no apparent reason?

Quick question: why do some people have nothing better to do than hate? I made a post about an hour ago on r/vinyl about my new Slipknot record that came in today. only one person so far voted on it, and they gave it a downvote. I have no problem with someone not liking a post I made if it offended them or they didn't agree, but this person left no explanation as to why they disliked it. Sure, they're entitled to their own opinion, but I spent a long time writing my description out and making sure I didn't say anything that people wouldn't like. and if you don't like the band or the album, then just say so. or better yet: don't negatively impact me because you didn't like something I said about my property that I spent my money on. I'm not attacking anyone with the post, so why hate? I don't care if you don't like what I bought or what I had to say about it, but I never said anything bad about anyone or anything. Again, if you didn't like my post then I don't care, you're entitled to that. but there's just no reason to downvote a wholesome post where all I said was that I like Slipknot and I liked the record. I guess someone was in a bad mood today 🤷‍♂

Storing multi-record albums

Update: I think my terminology may be a little off here, which could be confusing my question. For clarity, I mean single albums which have two or more discs (e.g. side a/b and c/d), rather than a box set of multiple albums.

——

I’m just starting to get fully into my vinyl collection, and have recently started cataloguing my collection and have bought both inner and outer protective sleeves for all my records.

What is the best way to store multi-record albums? For instance, where a record has two (or more records), do you put both of them behind the sleeve/gatefold, or do you put one inside the gatefold and one behind? I know convention seems to dictate that at least one goes behind the sleeve, but would both usually be placed behind too? Obviously, each individual record would be in its own inner sleeve, rather than putting both in one!

Similarly, for a collector’s edition, or book-like set (something like this - https://shopuk.niallhoran.com/products/the-show-the-encore-hardcover-2lp-photo-book), how would you go about storing the individual records which originally come in the front and back “covers” of the set?

New to Vinyl? What’s the easiest way to ID your exact record on Discog?

I’m trying to catalog some records I’ve recently inherited and having a tough time. How do you quickly find the year, pressing, etc?

Jacket Covers

I'm sure his this has been asked many times but I cannot find specific answers to my questions. I'd like my jacket covers very tight, thickness on the thinner side, and clear. Because I like them tight, I would need different size jacket covers for single records vs. double records or gatefolds. I really dislike grabbing a record and it nearly falling out of the sleeve because it's loose. And I really do not like all the different sleeves sticking from the shelf because they do not fit well. Certainly, first-world problems. I appreciate your suggestions. Thanks!

Got this album today. Might just be the best day of my life.

I ordered a record of my favorite Slipknot album, cleverly titled "Slipknot". Big metal fan, even bigger maggot (Slipknot fan, if you're unfamiliar with the term). It has some of my favorite Slipknot songs, and I think all the songs on this album are consistently good. It's a limited addition vinyl, and I love the lemon color of it. I've also always been a fan of the album cover. I'm surprised it was only about 20 dollars. I think that's incredibly generous. I absolutely love this thing. I've had it running ever since I got it, about 30 hours ago and I've just let it play the whole time while I listen to the entire album. The sound of this album is absolutely perfect for a metal fan like myself. it's eerie, dark, and unhinged. All of Corey Taylor's vocals sound like they were recorded in a closet with a broken door while he loses his mind. It's my type of music, but I understand how some people don't like this type of stuff. Also, for the basic old people out there thinking all metal music is satanic and evil, it is not. Even though there's an Ouiji board picture on the back of the cover, I swear I don't worship the devil. I just love the adrenaline thisusic gives people. It's a coping mechanism. When you're angry and feel misunderstood or treated unfairly, you can listen to this music and accept your anger without lashing out. No matter how many members pass away or leave the band, Slipknot will forever leave an impact on metal music with their amazing sound and original look. Long live the Knot.

Vinyl Cleaner

I’ve seen quite a few older threads regarding how to clean records. With tons of recommendations. What is everyone’s options on the boundless cleaning solution? I currently have it. And was planning on cleaning my record today, but have now seen mixed reviews here on it. I want to make sure it won’t hurt my records if I use it and make sure it dries before putting them away. I variant collect and want to make sure I don’t screw up the ones I can’t get new versions of. TIA :)

Is buying vinyl from gamemusic records safe?

There is a possibility of pre-ordering a vinyl with baldur's gate 3 soundtrack and I found it only in this store but recently I ran into some suspicious sites and I can't tell if it's scam or not. Here is link for the site: https://gamemusicrecords.com/

Millie Jackson

I'll always pick up a Millie Jackson album that I don't have (becoming less and less likely). It's interesting to track an artists career when you've got the majority of their discography in your stacks. I've got a ton of Emmylou Harris too, and it's cool to flip through and watch her hair go gray. Which artists do you always grab when you see them out in the wild?

Wrong disc in new record?

Picked up the National’s High Violet (new, shrinkwrapped copy)only to find that disc 2 is Fugazi’s repeater! Thought the blue color was a bit weird as I was pulling it out… Planning on returning, but has this happened to anyone before? Assuming they were pressed at the same plant. Do I hold off on returning and keep the unicorn 😂? Maybe it’s the universe’s way of telling me to become a Fugazi fan!

I've just used a Magic Eraser on my really old crackly Singles. After they dried, they sounded near enough brand new! I'm in shock.

I wish I could post a video here, can only choose a picture. These records were scratched to high heaven and crackled heavily.

Just to be clear, I used a light pressure and went along the groves of the record. I didn't scrub it like I'm washing a plate. Doing it this way is equivalent to clearcoat buffering... 6000 grit sanding. Perfectly safe.

Took my dad's entire collection for free

He's gonna move soon and he was planning to throw these away, I took a quick look at what he had and I couldn't leave them behind, there was some true grails here!

Most of it was rock/punk from the 80's and early 90's but there was a bunch of other stuff too, things like The Police, Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Billy Squier, Anthrax, Queen, Ozzy Osbourne, Deep Purple, Duran Duran and much more, loved going through it and my discogs is now even more loaded lmaoo

My great aunt worked for EMI Record so she got to keep a bunch of promo's and blank labels so that was amazing to see here as well, she still has some at her home so I hope I can get to see them someday :)
