Now that Queensland has disastrously (for the workers, health, economy, environment, society) reelected ̶c̶̶̶a̶̶̶m̶̶̶p̶̶̶b̶̶̶e̶̶̶l̶̶̶l̶̶̶ ̶̶̶n̶̶̶e̶̶̶w̶̶̶m̶̶̶a̶̶̶n̶̶̶ david crisafulli is it time Queensland restored their means of legislative review aka the senate?
It will take a referendum in Queensland. This could happen if the independent members and the smaller parties get balance of power. The two major parties do not want any sort of scrutiny; therefore the only hope is if the minors get balance of power and make the referendum part of their platform for forming government.
The issue at play here is that the older system which basically gave large swathes of regional Queensland extra seats per head because the size of the electorates were considered highly in redistribution; have been changed so that population is the major factor. That eventually will leave Queensland with the vast majority of power residing in the S/East corner. I don't think that's a good thing for the State, or for democracy.
Therefore a balanced approach needs to be enshrined in some sort of legislation requiring a referendum to change electoral laws. This will stop most of the mucking around they currently do in spite of democracy.
Hailing rn in Brisbane
Hi everyone! I figured Halloween of all days was the best time to ask this lol
I'm looking at doing a ghost tour of Queensland in the next year or so and google is coming up a bit short. So what are your best locations?
Give me your pubs, hotels, gaols and asylums (and whatever else there may be!) I'm looking primarily at historical places in general but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Looking at starting around Brisbane/Sunshine Coast and going up to far north Queensland. We're not looking to go as far as Cairns at this point but if there's a lot of good locations we can certainly be swayed!
Children are not adults. Ever.
The evil of the "Adult Crime, Adult Time" slogan is that it stops us from seeing the offender as a child.
A child committing an "adult crime" - whatever meaning that nonsense term might suggest - is still a child.
A useful thought experiment - how do we think about under-age sexual activity? Some children enthusiastically engage in the most adult of sexual adventures. But the law is there to protect them from themselves. And also from the malign influences of peers and adults.
Children have always misbehaved. They will in the future. The policy choice is how we respond. We're responsible for that choice. The children are not.
If we just say, "They knew the consequences. They made their choices," then we're dodging taking responsibility for our adult choice about the consequences. It's a cop-out. We will have failed the children, morally and practically.
At a practical level, harsher sentencing doesn't work. Deterrence has less effect on impulsive people who act heedless of consequences. It's a policy which delivers ever diminishing returns. An abusive, punitive policy will produce tomorrow's generation of addicts, armed robbers and rapists. It's in our self-interest to look after the children.
The harder we whack them, the more dangerous and violent they will be later.
A good guide to how we could respond better is to think about the difference between how a wise school principal deals with a child, compared to a prison guard.
I'm all for accountability, consequences, and responsibility. Reasonable minds can differ about how best to deliver those to children.
But not about whether they are children. Nor that our response should be appropriate to the child.
The political power of the slogan lies in turning our minds away from the child.
Once we adopt this slogan, we can justify to ourselves doing things that we know to be wrong. Doing things which we know should not be done to children - and we can even feel good about ourselves for doing it - because we've bought into a fiction that the offender is not a child.
Whatever the faults of other political parties, once the LNP put this slogan on billboards - chose it to be the main plank of their campaign - took this cheap opportunity, which they must know to be wrong, and which must lead to injustice and cruelty - I could not vote for the LNP.
It's not just wrong. It's evil.
This is how evil is done by governments, especially by democratically elected governments. It starts with denying the essence of the human being on the receiving end of a brutal policy. Here, the essential feature is that we are punishing a child.
Whilst on private property (in driveway) ignition on to reverse truck into a tight spot for friend but hadn't moved. Legitimately hadn't gone anywhere wasn't intending to and police hadn't seen the car even reverse. Where can I find information on this. Or anyone been through the same. Thanks
Heading to Queensland 16th to 29th of December. What’s the culture like in summer and before Christmas? All beach bros or is it fairly kind? Small town American visiting looking for a realistic view. Good or bad.
The title is pretty self explanatory. I've seen a lot of discussion around people moving to Queensland from other states over the last 4 years, what are your thoughts on how/ if any impacts this had on the recent election?
Hey all! I’m not sure if this is the right subreddit for this question, but I’m looking to find a dietitian (edit) near Rockhampton. I don’t mind driving if the person is worth it.
Here are some things that I’d like to see them for: weight Management, food sensitivities, nutritional support for mental health, and gut and brain connectivity health.
Any suggestions?
*Edit: comments say I should be looking for a dietitian instead of a nutritionist - thanks!
Can kill you if you drink too much too.
I had a friend die last year, drinking too much water on a trek in Indonesia. She was sweating profusely and kept drinking water, like over 4 litres at least, then suddenly her organs started to shut down. She died on the way to a hospital.
Just saying.
I feel like we need to stop letting political groups push absolute bullshit slander advertisements and instead keep their advertising focused on facts and policies they plan to implement with some legal repercussions if they advertise something they never do.
It seems every election at every level all I see are shitty advertisements with crappy insulting rhymes.
Why is this even allowed to happen, shouldn’t politics be serious and to the point? Why is there so much shit.
Was just in hospital emergency with my son who broke his foot.
Wait times were a bit as it was a busy night, but the fella next to me ducked out and brought McDonald's for me and my kids.
We're all divided a bit right now, but don't forget what makes us Queenslanders
Get used to seeing or hearing these words "Queensland LNP Scandal"
The Qld LNP haven't held office for a decade and will struggle to govern. Expect a lot of voter remorse.
It will get petty and vengeful as they bludgeon their way through the Treasury. There is a lot of corporate welfare to pay.
EDIT: house is in Bowen, not Airlie 😂🤦🏻♀️
I’ve just been offered a dream house sit in Bowen! I’ve never been before, and it will be over the Xmas & NY period so verrry hot. What can I expect? Any tips/areas I should visit? Is it a safe area? I’m a single female and am nervous about staying in an area I’m unfamiliar with . Excited to explore the region + Airlie & Whitsundays
Im 19 and is still learning about politics. Honestly, why is it all about LNP or Labor, many people said they voted for LNP because Labor had been in charge too long. Why cant we just vote for those other 6(?) groups? Green? One Nation? and other groups? I’ve never put 1 or 2 on LNP or Labor the entire time and i know many people who did the same, so why can’t the rest of you do? just a genuine curious question, no hate!
