I'm running PLEX in an unRAID Docker. I added a new folder to my Video share, which is where my other PLEX libraries reside. I've added an Other library in the past, but PLEX can't seem to see the new folder. I capitalized the folder name, so not sure if that's the issue. I did rename the folder, but another app is currently writing to that folder.
I'm not sure if it's a folder name issue or an access issue. I can see the folder in Windows and access the files in it.
I have thousands of videos setup in a Library in Plex under "Other Videos". These are videos that I have setup in a unique filename format, and I want Plex to ignore everything else about the video except just showing me the filename. For most videos, this works perfectly. Except some of them have embedded metadata for the titles and Plex pulls that metadata as the title for the video instead of the filename. I want to keep the metadata intact for these small number of videos that have it, but I also want Plex to ignore that metadata and use the filename for the video title. Is that possible?
So I just setup a few movies on a plex server. When I tested on my firetv I realised that the subtitles don’t work when i am on the “play orignal quality” option. But they work when I play on a lower resolution. I can’t understand why this is happening. Any help would be appreciated.
Does anyone know what happened to actor photos this week? They aren't pulling from TMDB anymore, and actors who have passed have had the photos from their prime career years replaced with (apparently) the last photo taken before they stopped breathing. It's horrible.
Hey so, I already have both of these running in my plex server and currently I have transcoding set to the 1050ti which has been working fine, but I saw a post earlier saying an Intel cpu might work better. Wondering if I should switch the option of just keep it like it is?
I recently moved my PMS from a Windows PC to a new TrueNAS server. I've just noticed that there is no LOCAL bandwidth showing in the Plex Dashboard when I am streaming to any of my devices on my local network. Not a huge deal but I'd rather it not going out to the interwebs before coming back to my device, unnecessarily using up bandwidth on my internet connection.
I have a content library in the 12 TB range, and I'd like to selectively share parts of it with my parents. This is less about me being concerned about them seeing some of the content and more with them being older and not as friendly with technology, so I don't want to overwhelm them with choice when I know that only about 10-15% of the library is to their taste. I am quite handy with creating managed accounts, but I'm trying to figure out the best way to show only a subset of the content to them.
Current ideas:
Create a new library and use symlinks to the shared content
Pros: Gives me precise control over the offerings; doesn't take up much space or create redundant files
Cons: Pain in the ass to set up; highly likely to break if a given piece of content is moved or renamed
Create a custom playlist and only give them access to the playlist
Pros: Gives me precise control over the offerings; no fear of content being deleted or renamed and then 'breaking' in their share because I didn't update the manually-created pointer
Cons: Pain in the ass to set up; playlists aren't easily searchable or browsable; searching using the Search field will return many irrelevant results - which again I'm not concerned with them seeing, but I don't want to overwhelm
Create a custom collection of content and have that be default thing that loads
Pros: Gives me precise control over the offerings
Cons: No way to restrict search to just the collection, so search will return irrelevant results; if they manage to navigate to a different region of the interface I'm not entirely convinced of their ability to easily return
None of these solutions seems entirely satisfactory. Very open to alternative suggestions.
I send everyone an invite on plex through their email they used to sign up and most of the time they make it to the friends list but some remain in the pending section even though they dont have any problems accessing anything. Is there any way to change it? Its not an actual problem, just kind of annoying.
I apologize in advance if this is common knowledge, but I just discovered what I think is a really neat Easter Egg feature. Note that I found this using Plex on Roku. I'm not sure if it applies to any other platforms. While your media is playing, you can long-press the OK button on the remote to jump directly into playback settings. This is way faster than manually going down into the menu, and lets you change things you might want to be tweaking frequently like playback speed.
Just thought it was a neat find and wanted to share.
What's the best way to go about adding subtitles to shows? I know the option to add subtitles, but can't always get the right subtitles to appear for the show im watching
I am running Plex on a Synology DS1821+ NAS and I just upgraded the Operating system to DSM 7.2.2-72806. The Plex application now has an error in the Control Panel saying 'The Plex package version installed is incompatible with your DSM.'
Anyone else suffering from this problem? I've tried to contact Plex but Plex support just gives you a list of articles to read. Anyone have any ideas?
I can't claim my server, I am running Version 1.41.1.9057, there are no other updates available. Has anyone come across this before and how do I fix it? :(
Hello, I have been on Plex for two years now and I bought the lifetime subscription last month and it seems great, but when I start using the download function on my mobile devices (Iphone, Ipad) it takes a while to download a simple 5 or 10 GB movie, for example a two hour movie takes two hours to download (the movie weight is only 9 GB), it seems that the movie is playing and not downloading.
I use Plex in a VPS with a very good connection (2000 megabits) and my home connection is 300 mbs, I have not used the transcoding option. I use the original quality.
Currently I have all of my TV shows spread over multiple HDD with each drive having a folder called TV Shows. I would like to pull all of my classic shows into a subfolder called Classic TV. What is the correct way to do this so that Plex will show a separate category of Classic TV?
I’ve had a decent look around to see if I can resolve this issue prior to reaching out but no joy.
Plex was working perfectly up until a few days ago on 4K fire stick. Since then, I get a playback connection error which resolves itself when I restart the video, however I’m lucky to get more than 20 minutes before the issue repeats.
Intermittently, the video will stop playing but the audio will continue.
I thought it may be the file type, however I’ve checked a file I know worked perfectly all the way through in the past and they were both MP4.
Prior to the issue first appearing there had been no changes to my set up.
Troubleshooting so far: restarted fire stick, cleared cache and data and reinstalled app.
Anyone with experience in resolving this problem’s help would be greatly appreciated.
I moved my Plex server over to a friends house because they just got fiber and I wanted to be able to direct play remotely for all my users.
He has a TP Link DECO mesh system. Remote playing works completely fine as I intended with fiber speeds. The problem is with the LAN ONLY using Plex. It lags and buffers. I have tried both the native Plex app on the shield pro and PKC (PlexKodiConnect) on Kodi on the shield pro and the bandwidth seems to throttle out at around 35 Mbps.
BUT if I SMB into my NAS using Kodi on my shield pro, that plays completely, no buffering. So clearly it’s something configured incorrectly on my Plex server or my friends router. Has anyone come across this?
Edit: I do want to mention that if turn off remote access, none of the Plex clients on LAN can connect anymore.
SOLUTION:
Flushing the DNS on my server fixed it
As title says, anyone been able to get this working?
Iv bought a pc tuner and can scan and pick up channels but it keeps failing at epgs.
I can't find an xmltv guide that plex accepts.
Any advice?
Hi everyone. I always thought the decision on what client hardware to get is easy as I usually watch plex from home and up to now I never had problems with my shield pro & always recommended it. but now I am watching my content from my girlfriends place most of the time & the key focus is not maximum compatibility as the stream is limited anyway to my upload speed.
She had an old Apple TV that does not support plex and that’s why I hooked up an old FireTV stick (1080p) which used to be on my guestroom tv but it’s horrible, even 1080p rips have to be transcoded if there is a multichannel audio track (5.1 or higher) and it just keeps buffering. My server is running on an i5-6500 with hardware transcoding turned on, which should be enough to transcode h264 to h264 if I am not mistaken.
The big question now is: what’s the better investment: a newer CPU / GPU that’s better at transcoding or a new client that supports more codecs?
I will test if I get better results with my shield pro and might keep it here if it works & get myself an Apple TV 4K for my home setup but I am thinking about getting a different server (a nuc for example) as it’s pretty much the same in money.
Note: most of my library is self ripped blurays and dvds, in varying quality profiles as I have curated it over many years now & changed settings in handbrake multiple times.
Edit: yes I have checked my network settings, everything works fine on other remote clients like my phone, several notebooks or iPads.
I need some advice on my HTPC set up which is getting a bit sluggish and outdated.

Would appreciate any thoughts or suggestions. I’m trying to keep it simple, stable with minimal maintenance. Also secure with automatic updates and having to worry about viruses, etc. Should be good for at least 8 years.
I'm trying to pay for the one time purchase so I can watch stuff on my friend's server on my phone, but once I've entered my info, I'm greeted with a spinning circle and it'll stay like this for minutes at a time. Is this normal? I just wanna watch shows in bed :/
I've been running a Plex server successfully for a couple of years on a RP4 with a 4tb ssd connected to it, however the lack of transcoding and the server going down from time to time has forced me consider upgrading. I recently bought a dell optiplex i5 9th Gen, 16GB ram and 240GB ssd for this use. My question here, is will I be able to easily move everything over or will I have to completely rebuild from scratch. Also the Optiplex comes with windows and I'm considering installing Linux as I'm somewhat familiar with it as I've been using Debian on the RP4 (permissions are annoying but I'm used to it)
Also any tips I should be aware of before I make the switch?
Thanks in advance
Hi all - I'm hoping someone can help me troubleshoot what I assume is a bandwidth issue. My goal is to be able to stream uncompressed 4K (Bit Rate = 60Mb/s+) from my Plex server without buffering issues. I am currently unable to stream content with high bit rates, however lower bit rates (20 Mb/s) are no problem. My hardware is the following:
WiFi = Google Nest Wifi Mesh
NAS = Synology DS1522+
Client = Chromecast with Google TV (4K version)
My network setup is:
The NAS is connected via ethernet to one of the Nest Wifi mesh points. The Nest Wifi point is in a separate room from the Router and the Client. The Chromecast is connected via Wi-Fi to the router. The 4K content is not being transcoded, and when I check the "stats for nerds" on the playback of the content via the client through the Plex app the bandwidth average is ~80Mbps.
My question is:
If I can connect the Chromecast directly to the router through ethernet instead of using Wi-Fi, will that improve my speeds? Or is the bottleneck because the NAS is connected to a mesh point in another room as opposed to being connected directly to the router?
Thanks for your help!
Hi Everyone,
i would like to merge/group a few videos in the "other Videos" Cathegory, something like in the "Series" Tab,
i tryed different naming scemes and grouping them in folders but somehow nothing does the trick,
is it even possible to have them grouped in "other videos" or is this just a "series"-only feature?
Here an Example what i try to have in the end (im totally fine with changing moviefilenames):
- Other Videos:
- - Trip to next Town
- - - Colluseum.mp4
- - - Beach.mp4
- - Reunion with School
- - - Festival.mp4
- - - Dinner.mp4
Kind Regards
I've read through every website and post I can find about this but still haven't found anything that works. Put simply, I have three folders in my current TV Shows library. One folder for TV shows and the other two are learning courses of magic tricks. I want to move these learning courses folders to a new Library called "Learning Courses" (clever, I know). Each of these learning courses folders have extensive custom metadata and thumbnails that I want to maintain. How can I move these two folders from my TV Library to a new Learning Courses library and maintain all the thumbnails and metadata?
I've tried a few times and none of the thumbnails are populating in the new Learning Courses library. I created the new Learning Courses library with similar settings as my current TV Library also. Not sure what I'm doing wrong.
I'm using a Synology NAS in case that's relevant.
Hi all,
I've been a plex pass owner and plex user for probably 10 years at this point. I've used the same PC from the beginning as my server:
A 2011ish Dell Intel i7-2600 3.4GHx with 12GB Ram on Windows 7 Ultimate and an onboard video card.
I've got 5 16tb external HDs. I use it to run Sonarr, Radarr and sabnzb.
I have about 5-6 friends that regularly stream (720p and 1080p) from my server and don't normally have too many issues.
So I'm looking for suggests to upgrade from this. I don't know if going to a mini-pc is an upgrade at this point or if I should be going for a fully optimized PC. I would prefer to just buy something off the shelf and plug everything in, install and configure it just like my PC is now.
Any suggestions on what to buy?
Thanks!
Hi;
I have installed the Plex app to my MIL's smart tv. It says my server is currently not available. I am on the east coast with her TV so cannot run to my cellar to see if the server is still on. But I can access it from my phone and laptop so I don't think that's the problem.
Internet is through Verizon FiOS but with an old box, not the 'streaming' box, so I put the app on the smart tv since I can't figure out how to add an app to the internet box.
I do have a laptop so can access server settings, just not the actual machine.
Any helpful hints for how to get the tv to see my plex server?
I am using the DVR function in Plex with my HDHomerun. The recently released TV show Matlock, which of course uses the same name as the 1986 show it is named after, is not recognized correctly by the Live TV Guide. So instead of recording content and placing it in the correct folder (Matlock (2024)), it creates a new folder every time it records a new episode (Matlock (1986)). It therefore also uses the incorrect metadata and uses the wrong poster etc inside Plex, disconnecting it from the already establish show/series in Plex. I can fix the match (which I did earlier in the week), but subsequent episodes repeat the same issue. Plex Series agent uses TVDB data by default, and when using the TVDB ID to fix the match, it changes it fine. Is there anyway to get the TV Guide/DVR to recognize the correct show up front in an instance like this, or will I need to fix each episode every time a new one is recorded?
On Plex tv setting, do you keep it on or off and why you need it off or not from your prospective
I couldn't believe how much partial and incorrect information I found trying to Google this. If this has been answered somewhere, please post the link.
I have a Plex server running on a Windows 10 desktop that I'm sharing with a friend who is coming in externally. I have SD movies and HD movies in separate folders. I want him to be able to see the SD movies but not the HD movies because I don't want to tax my internet connection.
I go the bright idea of setting up a secondary Plex server with a different name. I could share server instance A (stargazer) that only reads the SD folder and for the home network I could use server instance B (stargazerHD) that reads both the SD and HD folders. Do I need to run two instances of Plex or can I run stargazer and stargazerHD off the same instance? Is there a guide to setting up the second server/instance somewhere? OR is there a way to configure an external account to only see certain folders/libraries? I tried using parental/ratings access then setting the folder rating but the account could still see the HD folder, titles, and thumbnails.
Thanks,
Joe
I have about 30Mbps download, 8Mbps upload speed and have a really small apartment with virtually no data loss due to WiFi. What's the problem? I feel like Plex is giving me problems past 1-2 months.. And today some of the films on my library got unmatched.. Any ideas??
Yeah and then there's that some films get stuck at particular points! For example x film gets stuck at 21:53 so that just before that frame I'd need to move ahead 30 seconds..
The success rate of being able to watch a film without having to get up dropped down to %40 from around %90! What's up!!!!??
