Why cant i choose Original Quality on some files? I use my Plex on a Pi 4 with cant transcode, so i must use Original Quality. First i thought it's the bitrate. But the videos i want to watch are 10mb/s. And so other with higher bitrate can be watched.
It only happens on Asterix Movies.
Im in my local network. Also my port is free, so i should be able to connect from outside too.
I also checked "Disable video stream transcoding". And Streaming Quality is set to Maximum.
Hi!
Did something change with Plex recently? As in the last couple weeks? I have been having MAJOR quality issues while watching videos recently. Movies or series that are 1080p content and look like they are 480p low quality at best. Fuzzy video. "no anti aliasing stairs" on logos. Things like that. And I just can't explain where this is coming from. Video is fine when watched through VLC.
My setup is PMS running on a Mac Mini 2012 2.6GHz i7 with 16GB RAM on a fast SSD. PHT is also running on this machine (which is hooked up to my TV) unless I am watching on an iPad, other (smart) TV in the bedroom, etc etc.
Until the last couple updates, everything was fine and I have been using Plex for years and never had any issues. I never changed any quality settings nothing. Now it all turned to shit. As far as I can tell, both server and app are set to no transcoding/original quality. Anyone got any tips where this sudden slump came from?
I recently set up an attic antenna and made the mistake of going with Tablo, thinking it would be set it and forget it (uh…no lol). I decided that Plex Live plus HDHR is the way to go based on the glowing reviews.
My question: my MIL lives with us. If I get Plex Premium, can I set up a separate profile for her so she can have a simplified guide and not see all the shared media I have from friends on Plex?
When I am trying to playback media from my friends server, before each playback I get a notification
"you're not connected directly to this server so streaming quality may be limited. you may be able to connect directly by changing your home network settings"
I also feel like the video playback is poor , sometime 720p even though the media is 1080p or 4K.
as in title, plex app and desktop used to work on my mobile untill today.
then, not changing anything server side, stopped.
since I have dual sim Samsung S24, I switched to another mobile operator and surprise, it works flawless.
same, using the first operator (YOXO - budget unlimited voice and data from romania) with a proxy service (tunnel bear) everything works again.
so, is it possible my mobile operator is blocking acces to my plex server?
Ok, i have been using Plex for over 10 years. I have run it in a huge variety of environments, but my current install is just so bloated i think i wish to start over. I have a massive media library, i do not like to discuss how big but i can confidently say i would be in the .0001% of users.
Just for anyone that encounters this, i believe i have done everything possible to speed up Plex, so i don't really want to get too down that rabbit hole. The Server spec's for this machine are:
Obviously i would like to keep my watch history and the server/library settings/config. I have Kometa setup for metadata, so i am ok rerunning it on a completely new library. Technically, i have my whole watch history sync'd to Trakd but i would rather not have to rely on that.
I am running plex on Unraid and will likely just create a new docker container, with the same docker settings.
What is the best way to go about getting the watch history and settings?
I recently moved ISP and it turns out they use CGNAT. Bit annoying as I did ask but fine, we move. I should probably wrap my head around other technologies anyway.
Looking into it the main options are IPv6, Tailscale and cloudflare tunnels. I’ve had a play and got them all up and running without too much issue. Each seems to have a use case and I had a thought to use a combination of them for remote access. But ideally want Plex to try them in a certain order.
If I enter all paths into server access urls, will it try them in order? Or is there another way?
i.e IPv6 > Tailscale > Cloudflare tunnel. (I’m aware that there’s a debate wether this is against CF tos)
There was an issue a few years back when having SRT subtitles enabled would cause a stream to crash at the end on the last line of the subtitle file. It was fixed in a patch and now SRT subtitles work great (I tried to find the relevant patch notes on the Plex site, but haven't been able to. I will keep looking and post in comments If I can find it).
Edit: Found it. Here's a link to the previous issue.
I'm now having the exact same problem with ASS subtitles. Everything works fine for most of the stream, but when it gets to the very end of the episode, the video will buffer on the very last subtitle line and the stream will eventually crash. If I rewind a few seconds and turn off the subtitles, then the video streams to the end without issue.
It only happens with ASS subtitles and it happens every time. Not sure if anyone else has been having this issue.
I’m new to Plex and trying to pick a NAS.
How would I go about getting a 4 bay NAS as cheap as possible?
I’m hoping to have 2 redundant drives.
ebay, new, or otherwise is fine
I've been facing what appears to be an ongoing Plex bug for years. It keeps relabeling my Various Artists albums as being by individual, unrelated artists. For a while, it thought they were all by Laetitia Sadier. Then it decided that they were by Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes. Now, it thinks that I have 393 albums by Vinko Globokar. (I do have a few of his, but the rest are wrong.)
I meticulously tag and organize all my music, following Plex guidelines, so we can rule out mistagging.
My hunch is that Plex is using some sort of token to represent the artists in its database, and that it's confusing the Various Artists token with that for an arbitrary artist.
I can't be the only person experiencing this. Is it a known bug? What's the fix?
I have movie and tv shows in one directory on my server. I create a Movie library pointed to that directory and only the Movies show up (perfect). I created a TV show library pointed to that same directory. The TV shows show up fine, but the movies are also in that library, but with no metadata. I would like the movies to not show up in the TV shows library.
Does anyone have any suggestions for movies that were missed from 'Santa's Nice List'?
I'll start with: Gremlins (1984)
I was trying to build a library specifically for my anime TV shows. These are stored within a larger TV show folder on my hard drive. However, when I selected that show's folder specifically it wouldn't appear in Plex.
For some reason however, it did appear when I selected the entire TV shows folder. However, many TV shows, most of which are not animes, also appeared in my Anime specific Library.
When I tried deleting one of them from the library it deleted it wholesale from my PC.
Whilst I managed to recover the files I would like to please know:
a) Is there a way to remove films/TV shows/etc, from a library without deleting the original files
b) Why my anime TV show wouldn't appear when I selected its own specific folder but WOULD appear when I selected the entire TV Shows parent folder
Hi, I'm wondering why whenever I play a 4K, HDR or Dolby Vision file plex always reports this as HD when I pause the video. It's definitely playing as 4K or Dolby Vision etc because that's what the TV reports when looking at detailed signal information. Plex is also definitely using direct play. On the screen before actually playing the file Plex also says 4K or HDR etc. I know it doesn't affect the quality of the file that I'm playing, but it's just kind of annoying that Plex always says HD during playback.
I have been trying to watch my content from my Plex server on my work PC when I have lunch and have been getting this message. This is a new issue that seemed to have started when we updated our network equipment a little over a month ago. Our IT added an exception for Plex in the firewall, but the error still comes up. I have also allowed "Secure Connections" on my end. Any assistance to get around this would be greatly appreciated!
I've looked through the Support section and don't find my question answered, so I'm going to Reddit -- the knowers of all.
If I UNPIN my Music and Photo Libraries from PLEX, can I still see/access them through PlexAmp and PlexPhotos?
Thanks in advance for your answers.
Editing to add: I tried it out and unpinned both music and photo libraries and I can still access them from the PlexAmp and PlexPhoto apps on my iOS. They both show up under the "More" tab at the bottom, so I can still work on them from within the server. Thanks for the help and patience!
Hi there, I was wondering if anyone in the community can shine a light on where we're going wrong with moving our media library to a new hard drive. We are following the below guidance from Plex: -
Our Plex Media Server is on an NVIDEA Shield of which we plug the hard drive straight into. We are purely moving the content to a new larger hard drive, renaming the hard drive to the name of the old one, and ensuring that that the content ends up in the same relative location. As per the instructions we have stopped and restarted the Plex Media Server on the NVIDEA Shield on either side of the migration / name change.
Now when we try to play a movie on the newly renamed hard drive, with the same structure as the old hard drive, it triggers the below message: -
"The file associated with this item is not accessible by the server. Please verify that the file exists and the necessary drive is accessible."
The parent file structure on both hard drives looks like the below with all the movie files existing in the NVIDIA_SHIELD folder. The name of both hard drives is the same, and the NVIDEA Shield itself recognises the new hard drive.
When I actually look at the media library location on the Plex app I can actually see some differences so I think this is where the problem lies: -
So to bring the situation back to Plex's original instructions: -
"If you’re simply upgrading to a new/larger hard drive, the easiest thing to do is to name the new location exactly the same as the original one. That means simply making sure the new hard drive is named exactly the same as the old one, and that the media files are in the same location."
Even though I've renamed the new hard drive to the same name as the old one, inserted the movie files into the NVIDIA_SHIELD folder, I'm guessing I still haven't technically renamed "/storage/432AE1852AE14707/" to be "/storage/39463F1F463EED66/".
The issue is, I dont know how to rename that in Windows as the parent directory is your standard Windows letter directory which displays the Android/LOST.DIR/NVIDIA_SHIELD folder structure above. Am I missing something?
Thank you for any help or direction you can provide.

Btw my internet is 1000/500 fiber ;) but transcoding is good sometimes when on the go, or older highend tvs that do not support x265 ...
My old is some fujitsu server with no transcosing support
Edit: its 150 euros foe this
Hello,
I moved my Plex folder, the one where Plex is installed (not a content folder), from a failing HD to a fresh one. Probably didnt do it right because I dont know computers too well. Now Plex wont autostart any more when the PC comes on, I have to manually start it up, but the bigger issue is, now it wont allow me to complete a server update. Can anyone help advise me what to do to fix both issues please?
Hello
I am creating a kids profile on Plex that points only to the kid-friendly media available on my Plex server. The profile will access via the Plex app on either a roku or firestick or similar.
Is there a way to lock the App down to not switch to a different profile that has all the rest of my Plex content?
Device: Dell 3070 Micro
OS: Windows 10
CPU: Intel Core i5-9500T @ 2.20GHz
Storage: 256GB SSD m2 (system and Plex), 1TB HDD 5400rpm (media)
RAM: 8GB
Internet: Gigabit (server connects via Ethernet)
GPU: None
I don't share plex with anyone else. I'm the only user.
The issue is with my TV, a Hisense 55U7KQ. It doesn't want to play movies in their original quality. I always have to select a fixed quality. However, it works perfectly on the highest fixed quality, regardless of what it is.
For example, if the original quality is 4K Dolby Vision/HDR10 (HEVC Main 10), which Plex reports as requiring 28.9 Mbps internet speed, the movie will just load indefinitely (as if there’s a slow internet issue). But if I select a lower quality, such as 4K at 25 Mbps, it works perfectly. My TV is connected via Wi-Fi, but I also tried Ethernet, and there was no improvement. I checked the internet speed using the TV's browser, and it reported 250-300 Mbps.
I also tried Plex on my Xbox Series S with the same movie. The Xbox is connected via Ethernet, but the speed test shows only 90-100 Mbps. Despite this, the same movie runs in its original quality. However, I experienced a different issue on the Xbox. When I start the movie, it plays with a noticeable lag (around 5 fps), which doesn’t seem like an internet speed issue but rather a performance problem. After 10-20 seconds, the movie starts playing normally, and I can enjoy it in its original quality (4K Dolby Vision/HDR10, HEVC Main 10).
I also tried playing Full HD movies on my TV in their original quality, but I faced with the same issue. They only work on the highest fixed quality or lower.
Finally, I checked the Task Manager on my media server while running the 4K movie on my Xbox, but everything seemed fine.
My questions:
Where could the issue be?
Which component should I upgrade in my media server?
Is my HDD fast enough?
Is it worth purchasing Plex Pass for more details?
So I can't get any of my movies to show up in Plex. When I click on the folders the files are all grey'd out. My permissions seem correct, and I have tried different encoding settings in hand brake as well as a straight .mkv from makemkv.
System: Supermicro x12 lnf04 motherboard Xeon e3 1230 v5 64gb ecc ram 5x6tb drives in Z2 Truenas Scale (up to date) Plex (up to date, no pass)
Handbrake settings tried: Fast HD (default) Super quality UHD (changed H.265 to H.264) I've tried bot web optimized and not for both settings.
I will upload photos of what I'm seeing on my end. But I can't figure out for the life of me what I'm doing wrong and would appreciate any help I can get
I am running into this odd issue where multiple different kid's TV shows (T.O.T.S., Marvel's Spidey and His Amazing Friends, Superkitties) all are only showing the first episode of the two part episode file. I have the episodes named properly, per the Plex documentation, as Show Title - S01E01-02 - Info but only episode 1 shows up in the list.
From what the documentation says, both episodes should show up in the Plex list but would play that same video file from the beginning, which is what I actually want. The problem is that I don't actually see episode 2 in the Season list, just episode 1, 3, 5, 7, etc...
I don't know if I have some setting off or if something is configured incorrectly, but this is happening for all TV shows that are like this with 2 parts per episode. I tried changed the Episode Ordering for the shows to a different source (like TheTVDB) but it doesn't change it from hiding the second episode in the Episode list for each season. How do I fix this?
EDIT: As others have said, I missed that the episode needs to have the format of SXXEYY-EZZ (two Es for the episodes) which I only had the first episode with an E in front. I was able to fix this by adding the E.
I can open Live TV on any device except for my Apple TV on which there isn't a button to be found anywhere, even under More...
The funny thing is, when I switch to my wife's Plex Home icon, it shows up for her, so I know there's no problem with a server connection or anything.
Where do I go to pin the icon to my sidebar?
Yesterday, I had posted about this problem, and I hope it's OK now. I went back to the older version of PMS 1.41.2.9200, of course uninstalled the latest one, in addition, I removed the reserved port on the router and put it back on and seems to work for now. But I think, I have to make the Ip address static, if I reboot the router or pc, it may change. Well, baby steps for me, I'm not really tech savvy.
I recently purchased a new TV (LG 77" OLED, up from Samsung 42" LED). I have noticed some small square/rectangular artifacts in certain places on some older 480p videos (local server). I know what you're thinking. "Playing 480p content on such a big screen is surely going to manifest some weirdness". But this never happened on the old 42" TV. I also tried playing the same video through Plex on my PC and it's flawless. I even double checked playing the video directly on my PC via VLC, also flawless.
What's strange to me is that the pixelations show up in the exact same places every time I play it. That seems to suggest it's an issue with the media and not with Plex. But I've scrutinized those same exact places on the old tv/PC and am just not seeing anything. I don't think it's just the fact that it's a bigger screen and it's just being stretched more to make it more apparent. It feels like it's some transcoding issue, but I don't know why it wouldn't be visible on the older tv. Now that I'm typing this I remember seeing these artifacts on higher res, more modern content, but it isn't as frequent.
Any ideas on how to remedy this? I don't know if hooking up the tv to ethernet will make much of a difference over wi-fi. I've thought about changing the CPU from "very fast" to "fast" or something, but why should this be necessary if transcoding was fine on the older tv?
Any help or ideas would be appreciated!
In my library I have two copies of the same movie. One is 720p and the other is 4K 2160p.
How do I select which version I want to see?
