I have been running Plex on a synology DS 920+ with 8 drives running from 10-18 tb each.
I recently (today) started playing with Unraid and am running it on a server with
Intel® Xeon® CPU E5-2697 v3 @ 2.60GHz
Memory: 448 GiB DDR4 Single-bit ECC
Am I better off moving the PMS to a docker on the full server?
Is it possible to move a movie from one plex library to a different plex library and still maintain watched, date added, and other metadata?
I've found plenty of discussions online around moving a library to a different physical location, which is not what i want.
Arbitrary example:
Library #1 = Movies = located 'D:\plex\Movies'
Library #2 = Movies-Kids = located 'D:\plex\Movies-kids'
If I want to move a movie currently in Library #2, to Library #1, by moving the physical movie from one file directory to the other, and maintain it's watch history/metadata/et al (not have Library #1 see it as a 'new' movie), how would I accomplish this?
So... until I discovered the HDHR forum on Reddit, I had never heard of Plex. After browsing their website, reading Wikipedia, etc... I am still not sure I get it...
If you have a massive collection of movies and shows saved on an HDD, it organizes them and puts them in 1 place?
If you use something HDHR, it allows you to use a nice DVR?
If I don't have a personal collection of digital movies and shows, it adds minimal value?
Trying to understand the excitement and I don't see it clearly spelled out.
Sorry if this is a silly question, but I’m new to Plex. I’m using my personal computer as a server, and it’s working great so far. I’ve set up different libraries with movies for different age groups - one for kids' movies and others for everything else.
The issue I’m having is that when I’m logged into my account, it doesn’t show all my libraries in the suggestions. For example, if I select an actor, it only shows movies from the kids' library, which is shared with everyone. It doesn't show anything from my other libraries. The same thing happens if I select an actor in my private library - it only shows movies from that library, not from the kids' library.
How can I set it up so I can see movies or TV shows from all my libraries when searching for an actor or director, especially as the main owner of the server?
First time setting up my Plex Server on PC, but had the error:
Not available outside your network
Your server is signed in to Plex, but is not reachable from outside your network.
Firewall enabled and allowed Plex apps. I restarted the router, no effect. Ran through troubleshooting, followed Plex's guide. My AT&T router does not have uPnP or NAT-PMP so I was moving on to further configuration of the router / port forwarding, but I dislike the idea of static IP for my system.
What ended up solving it for me is much simpler not in any guide so I'm providing it here:
Open Command Prompt
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
Now I can access my content via my phone = SUCCESS
Hope this helps- cheers 🎵
I'm frustrated. Plex has been shoving multiple shows together. Show #1 has 10 Episodes, And Show #2 has 4 episodes. I select Show #2E01 and it defaults to Show #1E01. I have to then go select another Version to see it.
Looking for a SFF GPU to use for my Plex server. I'm currently running an GTX 1070 Ti which has been great. The CPU is an i3-9100f but the passmark score is around 6700. According to the Plex article, transcoding 4k HDR10 streams would require a CPU with a score of around 12000... So, I grabbed the 1070Ti from my old PC and it works great, plus it was free.
Fast forward a year to now - I'm trying to build a nice server for my new home rack (small 8U rack). Currently, the 1070Ti sits sideways in my old clunky 3U server chassis. I drilled holes into the top of the chassis cover, and 3D printed a bracket to sit over the PCIe slots and is secured to the mobo standoffs. This is not ideal, but it works. Ideally, I'd love to get down to a 2U server chassis like this but would then need a new GPU. Wondering what SFF GPU would support 3 simultaneous 4k HDR10 streams? I share the server with a few family members and also have 2 devices I watch from with subtitles as well, hence the "power user" title. Not sure if I really need to go overkill, but I'm guessing others have done this. Thanks!
I have tried reading a lot of things to help solve the problem but I am at a loss. I keep losing connection to my plex server from my devices.
I have my plex server setup on my QNAP Nas and everything is set up correctly as it has worked fine in the past. Recently I had to unplug my NAS and move it, but it has since been reconnected and this is when the issues have started.
Currently my NAS has a direct connection to the router and I can access the Plex Folders I created (Movies, 4k Movies, T.V. Shows etc...) on my PC over the network via a wireless connection. When I run the plex app on either my phone or tv it says my server is offline.
When I log in and go to Account Settings it either says "Unable to connect to "Plex Server" securely....or sometimes I can get in to the remote access setting to which it constantly says Unable to access outside of network.
Completely stumped and looking for any help
Hello

Hey all, I've been working on moving over my music library to Plex. Went and got a little baremetal server from a friend who does datacenter work, wiped and installed Plex, couldn't be happier with Plexamp.
That said, I do miss being able to set up group listening with the "Jam" option through Spotify where multiple people can join to listen to the same audio. Is there any way to set up this kind of synchronized listening to multiple users?
Well, I finally got my Plex all set up, and got the wife and kids convinced to use it instead of YouTube... And my 12 year old gaming PC's power gave out.
I knew it was coming, and all my media is saved to an external hd.
I've been interested and reading about mini PCs and I'm ready to buy one (and convincing myself that it's better to buy one now before tariffs).
I'm not computer smart, I understand the basics, and Google my way through issues.
I'm lost when it comes to the options for a mini pc.
I almost ordered the beelink s12 pro with the n100 last night and then came across some posts saying that it was good but can't do power hungry tasks.
So is an Intel i7 better than the n100?
Currently I don't have multiple people accessing at a time, kids in the morning, family at night . And I don't foresee that changing much.
I'm at less than a tb of data on a 4tb external drive. My router isn't set up for networking it.
I'm friendly with windows, but curious about Linux. I did try to setup the arrs and qbt but it didn't work before the computer died. I want to learn more and be better at computers and Linux, I don't really like windows but it's what I've been using for 30 years.
I use my laptop for Adobe Creative Suite and I don't game. So I'm not really sure what I need.
I don't want to spend more than 300.
What should I get?
Synology 423+, standard plex install package (non-docker), running latest version of plex
I spent a long time choosing theatrical poster artwork for each (3300+) movies over the years, erroneously believing that manually selecting a poster locked the field.
Upgraded and moved plex install to a new synology a month ago, and unfortunately all the metadata updated when I pointed to the newly migrated library...which of course detonated all previous poster picks.
Short of going through one by one and then dragging a poster to the desktop, then navigating to the film's directory and dropping in a local asset...is there any way to "permanently" lock the field in Plex? En masse or one-by-one manually?
Thanks in advance for any guidance!
Looking for some advice. I have been running Plex for quite some time without any issues. I have it running on Unraid. All of my devices are hard wired. This started about two days ago, and I think I have tracked it down to files with 4K True HD 7.1 sound.
All of a sudden, they will not now play on any of my devices, Nvidia Shield, Onn 4k Pro, or on my tablet using the Android app. They will play using the Windows PC app, but will not play using the browser app. All of these files played before with no issues. I have not changed any settings on anything Device or Server Side. I'm trying to save doing a fresh install of Plex server because I am not sure if that will fix it. Anyone have any suggestions? This is the error Plex is giving me, but I don't know why.
I got the files working, after changing the audio, but I dont know why all of a sudden it started doing it. Before, it would just transcode the audio, I didn't have to select the Dolby 5.1 track. I was wrong, and the Nvidia does play them but it can send the True HD audio through.
I’ve been using my main PC as a Plex Media Server and I’ve been experiencing a very consistent issue that’s so freaking annoying that it ruins the Plex Experience for me. Every time I get close to the end of the video, after around 90% of the video(wether it’s a 20 minutes video or a 3 hours one) the video stops and starts buffering, only it won’t actually every manage to buffer - it will just crash after around 30 seconds of waiting. The only way I can force Plex to continue playing the rest of the video, is to rewind about 10 seconds back, and then it will run smoothly for around 30 seconds until it happens all over again. This only happens after around 90% of the video, always the same symptoms, and it never happens throughout the entirety of the video up until that point.
I have not changed anything in the settings after setting it up.
If it helps, here’s the specs of the server’s PC CPU: Ryzen 3 3700X RAM: 32GB DDR4 GPU: GeForce GTX1080 Connected through ethernet 1000Mbps Download, 100Mbps Upload.
The device I use to watch the content is my TV: Samsung NU8000 55” running TizenOS.
Anyone knows why is this happening and what can I do to fix it?
So I have an older Samsung TV from 2014 that has an outdated Plex app, that while works, is really slow and doesn't support many premium features.
I am thinking on buying a Chromecast 4, since I heard that with that I can use the main Plex app with all the bells and whistles.
However I read here that Chromecast is bad with Plex. Keep in mind I live in Europe so no Roku stick here and Fire sticks UI looks awful...
ALSO I have my TV connected with a LAN cable, so I stream my content over cable. Would a Chromecast mean lower quality with this setup?
Thanks!

Update: I ordered a Chromecast 4, will see if it was the right call. :)
My folder structure and file names do not conform to Plex's prescribed naming convention. I was told that symlinks could be an alternative to renaming all my files so I decided to conduct a test.
I am working on a Windows 11 64-bit PC and did a fresh install of Plex Media server and Plex Desktop yesterday.
I have used the app Symlink Creator to create a symlink on my external SSD which points to an .mkv file (a TV episode) on my external HDD. I did this whilst running the app as an administrator.
The folder path for my symlink is this:
O:\- Media File Links\Soft Links\Shows\Sailor Moon (1992)\Sailor Moon Season 1
As you can see the folder structure conforms to Plex's preferred structure.
Running both Plex Media Server and Plex Desktop as administrator I created a TV Show library in Plex and had it scan the folder with my symlink in it.
Nothing appeared.
I ran some further tests, which included having Plex scan the file with the original file name changed to conform to Plex's naming convention. this did appear.
I deleted the old symlink and created a new one pointing to the media file which now had the naming scheme Plex prescribed.
Again, nothing appeared.
I double checked the file type of the symlink as I was told (perhaps this is incorrect) that Plex will not recognise hardlinks, only soft links.
Under properties, The File type read:
.symlink (.mkv)
Which I presume to mean it is indeed a softlink not a hard link.
I granted Full access to the folder under the security tab within properties and tried scanning again.
Still nothing.
Using an AI to instruct me (as I am not very technically minded) I even tried creating a soft link using command prompt in case the problem was the app I used.
Nothing. Nothing at all.
My questions are:
a) Can Plex recognise hard or soft links in the first place?
b) If it can, given what I outlined above how can I get it to recognise them?
Just in the process of migrating my Plex from PC (CentOS Linux) to Synology NAS and I am experiencing issue with adding photos. I know what the problem is per se, logs write the following:
File requested for photo transcode is over maximum size of 104857600 bytes, refusing to transcode
I realize now that all these photos are RAW where I use to shoot RAW+JPG and had the JPGs on my old Plex server. I did not think anything was wrong at first as the first few images did open up. Now majority will not load.
One question I can not seem to find is whether I need a Plex Pass for this to transcode an image. Or if there is a setting to increase max size or something. I am hopefully trying to avoid doing mass conversion to have JPGs & RAW sitting on my NAS.
if so is there any limits I need to know?
While my Plex library includes many regular feature films and shows, I also have some material that doesn't get picked up by the regular outside databases. I therefore want local metadata for everything. I have read everything about how to correctly set this up and was able to get it to work properly in Emby, but I can't get it to work in Plex! I have reviewed my agents settings and have local data listed first for everything.
What am I not doing properly? I had it working correctly awhile ago, but now I can't figure it out.
Hi!
Looking to buy a Phillips TV, all 2024 version have Titan OS, does it have a native Plex app? I can't find this information anywhere.
Thanks!
Hi guys!
I've looked around on forums for a solution to this, and everyone seems to say it's the tv or firestick settings, but I don't see anything that would cause that.
When I play movies using the firestick on my onn tv, the text runs off the edges. This does NOT happen if I just use the built in Roku player the TV has (I like to use firestick because I have various apps and plex seems to be smoother on there as well)
I've checked the firestick display calibration and it seems to be perfectly aligned
I've tried each of the TV's display settings and I'm already on the best one (zoom/fit/auto/etc)
Any ideas as to what this could be? Thank you!
Hi guys,
Since last update, my LG TV cannot play any files from the PLEX server. I've been using it for years, but now when I try to play anything it just tries to load the file on the Tv for a while, than says "format not supported". The XPLAY app also says "The video could not be loaded either because the server or network failed or because the format is not supported".
This hapened after the last update of the PLEX server and I'm trying to play files, that worked perfectly fine before.
Any idea what's happening?
I'm running the up-to-date Plex app on the Onn 4k Google TV streaming box. It works wonderfully except for one glitch. When returning to Plex and continuing to navigate in my library tabs the homescreen automatically loads after a few seconds. Then I have to start navigating all over again. I have Remember Last Tab checked and it does work as I initially start back where I left off but then a few seconds later the Home Screen loads and it is never helpful. Is there a way to stop this from happening?
Hi All,
I've setup a PMS on my Raspberry Pi. It's working great on the web but unfortunately shows as offline in both the TV and Mobile app.
Does anyone have some advise?
I use docker compose to spin up NGINX and Plex containers.
the NGINX container has ports 80 and 443 exposed (which are then forwarded through the router).
The plex container has port 32400 exposed.
NGINX is configured such that requests to https://plex.mydomain.com:443 go to the internal https://plex:32400 (docker networking)
I have added https://plex.mydomain.com:443,http://plex.mydomain.com:80 to the custom urls section in the plex settings. I also have remote access turned off.
Has anyone ever solved getting Plex to work correctly through a reverse proxy such as Traefik?
Apologies if this is a basic question, but just wanted to confirm the answer before I make any moves. I have had a free Plex account for some time now - essentially I just have it pointing at some folders on my PC where I have photos, videos, music, etc so that I can access it all on my phone from anywhere.
I'll be heading to my parents' for the holidays, and I know they have requested I transfer them my photo library. Obviously could do this more manually through a USB, or Google Drive, etc, but since I already have it on Plex I thought I might see how I could do things this way.
My understanding is that on the Free account I can not download anything on a different PC even if I log into my account. My main question then would be if I say take a Plex Pass account, would I be able to do so? From the feature descriptions I see it specifically mentions downloads on mobile devices but doesn't mention desktops - not sure if there would be a restriction there. Would appreciate any help clarifying, or if anyone has suggestions for the easiest way to make my Plex library more transferable.
EDIT: Thanks for the input. Sounds like Plex is not the best option for this.
Anyone feel like the commercials on Plex are excessive? I recognize the revenue needs but it’s way too many and I’ll limit my use of the service as a result
