Soundbars
99.9% of the time Soundbars or HTiB (Home Theater in a Box) systems are not a good investment of your time and money.
It is the general consensus of r/hometheater not to recommend these things and instead simply steer a user toward a 2.0 or 2.1 system made of quality, Audio-Centric name brand components which are easy to assemble and cheap enough for low budget or space conscious buyers.
Most can be expanded to 5.1 if you buy the correct items in the correct order.
For further explanation please read Why You Shouldn't Buy a Soundbar

Hello my friends!
Well, I’ve come to the conclusion we simply won’t have true surrounds in my living room setup. With that decided, I started thinking of alternatives.
I have a Denon S760H receiver. Would you all recommend this overhead setup on my vaulted ceiling? Or waste of time?
We are fine with the 3.1 as it stands and don’t plan on placing surrounds behind the couch. Just spitballing and seeing everyone’s opinions! Doodle picture for reference!
Preferably < $200, quality doesn't need to be amazing, and ideally available on Amazon
Just finishing up my basement renovation this month and planning to set up a nice home theater in the TV space. The TV area is about 200 square feet, full basement is about 550 sq ft. Between my wife and I, both of our parents want to support the new build by buying a set or item, so here’s my plan:
-TV is already purchased 77” Samsung OLED -I would buy a 7 channel Dolby Atmos receiver and a good used pair of bookshelf speakers on FB marketplace to get going before Christmas -Wife’s parents will buy Klipsch 450C or RP 504C Center channel -My parents will buy Klipsch 12” sub R-120SW or SPL-120 -I will then fill in the rest from FB marketplace (Right + left surround first, then ceiling, possibly rears later)
Note: my wife and I don’t love the aesthetic of giant towers. Just a personal preference for now, I know we probably lose a little sound value there.
So in a few months it will be 5.1.2, and eventually 7.1.2
Any issues with my plan? Thanks
Looking to buy one for movies and ps5 gaming. I can't mount an ALR screen so I guess I shouldn't go for a UST projector?
Hence looking to buy a short throw laser projector that you can mount on a tripod and project onto a white wall. Budget around 2500aud. What would you recommend?
Should i buy it for 100€? Is a good blu ray player?
Hello!
I have two JBL 305P MKII for my record player that I have plugged into my 2019 TCL 4K 65" TV along with a shitty Energy subwoofer someone gave to me lol.
I'm looking at improving my home theatre setup, I'm cool with just a 3.1 setup for now and adding speakers later.
There's a Pioneer VSX-935 Receiver available nearby for $300 and I feel like I could get him down to $250.
Paradigm Studio Monitor 3 v2 for $200 and feel like I could get him down to $150.
Paradigm CC-190 v6 Centre Speaker for $180 and feel like I could get him down to $150.
These are all sold separately and just wondering if this seems like a good deal / budget setup with some compatibility for upgrades down the line?
I think eventually 5.2.2 would be my goal!
I’m looking for a mount that I can use for my pergola. I plan to put a TV (maybe 40-45”?) in the far corner. Ideally I would like something that swivels and can fold up out of the way when not in use. I don’t know if that even exists honestly. Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated!
Hello! I received some rear speakers from a friend who wasn't using them anymore. Unfortunately there is no manual and I'm struggling to get the TV to pair with them via Bluetooth.
I've attached a photo of the back of the speaker for more information.
I am dog sitting my friend’s dog. I was watching a movie and I paused to go to kitchen to get some water. While filling the cup , I heard a pop sound from the TV area and TV has no signal message. When i checked I found pee all over the receiver . It is fried..! It was Denon X3600 2019 Model. I doubt it is fixable .
I think x1800 is the newer version with similar features and 2 less channels ( I don’t need them, mine is a 5.2.2 setup). I might order that , any better recommendations in that range ?
As i need more space for my subwoofer pb 2000 pro i would be mounting the tv on wall now. As i have my dali fronts to the left and right of tv and their height from bottom is 42inches. My question is Can i wall mount the tv higher say tv bottom start from 43 inches from bottom so that my dali speakers dont cut the screen or it will strain my eyes or worsen the video quality? I would go with tilt height adjustable mount. I have 3 options. As i am having some null in bass frequency range75-80hz i can try all 3 walls IF BASS null can be treated if i change my wall?
1st is my current position here tv is on tv unit but here both sides have wooden gates and i am having bass null in 75 to 80hz range frequency.
2nd option is this and it has concrete wall to left but has wooden gate to right and will have small window and in wall wardrobe opposite to tv wall where i will sit.
3rd option is this wall it has concrete wall to right but has wooden wardrobe in wall.
I want to try all these 3 walls just because of bass null if in any case these wardrobe or gate opening to right of wall can cause null in subwoofer bass or does not matter?
If on all 3 walls bass will have same issue i would like to have it mounted on my current position which is 1st but it has gates both sides. what do you suggest? And how maximum high the bottom of tv should be if eye level in chair is 42 inches
I’m looking to buy a new TV, but I’m not sure which size would be best for my space. The wall where the TV will be mounted is 5 meters (about 16.4 feet) wide, and I’ll be sitting about 2.5 meters (around 8.2 feet) away from it. I’m deciding between the LG G4 in 65 inches or 77 inches. Any advice on which size would give the best viewing experience at this distance?
First time poster. So pls bear with me.
I’ve been wanting to upgrade to a proper home theatre sound system for a while, on a budget. Been talking to people, even did wiring through the wall when my apartment was renovated. But due to certain unforeseen reasons I couldn’t just afford to invest in a good system.
Finally I’ve made some savings. (Still on a budget)
I’m staring at two options.
Either a Marantz PM6007 plus Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 - connect to my 55” TCL tv and if possible connect to my Denon LP player 29F. Or do I go for a Samsung W990D soundbar with Dolby Atmos
I’m torn guys. Please suggest pros and cons.
Hi
I have used Audyssey a few times, and the results are almost always the same. Then I found A1 Evo, which people rave about, and I gave it a go. I have run it a few times, but I always get the same results.
In one picture (I just used the centre, for example), you can see what Audyssey got and how it altered it, which looks to be a good job to around 1k, where all speakers have that dip. Because it's on all of them, that's down to the room.
In the other picture, you can see the centre channel again. After around 180htz, it's flat, but for some reason, L/C/R and the surrounds (not the heights; they seem flat or very close) all have big dips in the range of 100htz to 180htz. In the original data, you can see big spikes in that range, so it would need to be dropped, which Audyssey seems to have done, but for some reason, A1 Evo does not level it; it drops it even further.
Should A1 Evo really drop L/R/C/surrounds all like that, or is it way too much over-compensation?
Thanks
As above.
Trying to find an HDMI matrix that supports 120hz 4k HDR on all outputs? All I can find is devices with 1 output being 4k and the other downscaled to 1080p
thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Hello,
I'm looking to upgrade my speakers with a budget of around $1500. I can't fit floor-standing speakers, so I'm looking into bookshelf and was going to start hunting for Black Friday deals soon. The options I've been looking at are:
Ascend Acoustics - Sierra LX
Wharfedale Linton
ZU Audio DW6
KEF Concerto
Anybody have any recommendations of what I should be leaning towards? Thanks.
P.S. I have a Yamaha RX-V679 A/V Receiver
Hello,
now my hometheater i choose and ordered all the needed parts.
AVR: Denon 1800H
Speaker: 4x Triangle Comete 40th
Center: Triangle Voce EZ
Subs: 2x SVS PB 1000 pro
DSPeaker Anti Mode
now my question:
Location Australia.
Ordered a Sony 85” x90L from Amazon on Prime Day.
First one that was shipped - I had professional mounting guys come unbox it, mount it, turned it on and boom - defective screen. You cannot see any external damage on the screen but when you turn it on, it looks like shattered screen inside from a single point of pressure. (I have a home camera recording)
Called Amazon up - they were excellent in organising a replacement right away. But for the original item, they said they had no option of booking me a carrier. They could only do non-specific carrier return labels that required me to pay the carrier upfront. They wanted me to organise a carrier, pay for the cost, and said they will reimburse me later. Which is already absurd. I spent an afternoon talking to multiple carriers and most of them do not take an item that large from a regular consumer. They mostly do B2B. The only carrier I found quoted me $500 dollars, which I was not comfortable paying even if Amazon says they will reimburse me. I’m already down 3K and no TV. After some back and forth with customer service, they said they will organise for the carrier that is delivering the replacement to pick up the defective TV at the same time. All good.
Then, the replacement TV arrived a day early out of the blue, when I wasn’t expecting to be present. The carrier dumps the TV outside my garage, leaning against my car on an angle, under the hot sun. I was made aware two hours later, and recorded walking up to the TV leaning against my car. My neighbour also has CCTV footage of the event. I called the carrier - he says he knows nothing about picking up the original defective TV. I also found out he unloaded the TV by himself - single person carrier, when the 85inch TV is supposed to be two person carry. (Call recorded)
I called Amazon customer service right away and explained my situation. I was okay with moving it into the garage but I did not want to be blamed if the TV turns out to be defective again. After a lot of reassurance from the customer service rep, saying Amazon will make it right, they will not try to blame me yada yada, my partner and I moved it into the garage standing upright (this process also recorded). They also told me to just keep the original TV or dispose of it.
I had the professional mounting guys come again. This time they tested the TV first. I recorded the whole moving and unboxing process. The TV is again, defective. Same issue, different spot. Cannot see damage outside, but when you turn it on, it looks shattered.
Called Amazon again, and this time they were outrageous. Basically saying there’s nothing they can do. The only option is to refund me after I have returned the TV by organising a carrier myself and paying for it out of pocket. There’s also no option to send another replacement. The whole time I tried to be civil and say this is unreasonable and unacceptable - if it were you, wouldn’t accept it either. The customer service rep hung up on me after saying there are no other solutions she could offer. Called again, basically same story, only difference was “an internal team will be in contact within 48hrs.”
I am going to speak to Fair Trading & my bank about the possibility of a chargeback. But any suggestions or insights would be appreciated.
Can I go out from subwoofer speaker-out from Onkyo HT-R390 AVR (https://assets.onkyo-av.com/product-manuals/Own-Man-3400\_HT-R390\_290\_En\_web\_2022-11-02-203927\_zemy.pdf?v=1667421605) into SVS 3000 Micro (https://content.abt.com/documents/120020/MICRO3000-owners\_manual.pdf) line-in?
Do I just need a speaker wire to line-in converter? Is AVR out speaker impedance into woofer impedance an issue? Thanks r/hometheater .
Anyone know of a hdmi switch that is at least 2 in 2 out, 3D, and Atmos compatible with a 7.1.4 surround system? My setup would a 3D bluray player, fire stick in to Samsung 7.1.4 surround and Epson 3d projector out.
I am building a guest/pool house. I have a AV receiver for the inside surround sound, along with a TV, and will have another TV on the patio just outside the pool house, and I'm also looking to add some outdoor speakers, and doing it all on somewhat of a small budget ($1000 for all audio equipment).
I want to accomplish a court things:
1- to be able to play the same music in the main house, the pool house, and the back yard when we are having parties. This will mainly be Spotify, and using "speaker groups" that will include several echo devices in the house, a WiiM amp for outdoor speakers on the main house, both already exist, along with what ever goes into the pool house.
2- have audio in the pool house separate from what's going on outside patio, which I'd like to be able to use for audio from the TV.
Looking for some advice Incase I am missing something or not thinking it through.
I'm thinking of setting up the AV receiver as normal, with a WiiM mini, running the zone 2 pre-outs to a 6 channel amp, that would feed the outside speakers.
To connect the outside speakers, the amp will be in a small closet, and I'm planning on running the speaker wires to a weather proof box, where additional speaker wires will be run to the outside speakers. For this, I need a solution for connecting the wires together, like a patch panel that fits in the weathproof box.
I'll also be running ethernet and a HDMI extender from the zone 2 HDMI output on the receiver, to the patio TV, which I believe will allow me to play the same thing on both TVs and share audio?
Any thoughts on anything I'm missing, or if there are ideas on how to better accomplish this? I'm am trying to do it DIY and not spend several thousand to have a pro do it.
I recently purchased a Panasonic UB820 after my Sony player kept freezing (I know that issue is very common).
When I first got it, I watched my 4K copy of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and it was flawless, absolutely stunning!
However, when I went to watch a new copy of Blade Runner: The Final Cut (4K) it froze in a couple scenes. While I don’t have pictures it looked very similar to the issue in this post.
I have a few notes from my time troubleshooting. When I opened the case for the first time, the disc was loose, and while I didn’t notice any scratches, it is possible I missed something. It freezes at the same couple spots every time consistently (about 2 minutes in total between the two scenes). The only thing making me doubt the player is that when I tried it on my PS5, it played through most of the scenes perfectly (with the exception of it freezing for a couple seconds).
I’m not sure if the player is just more sensitive to little scratches than a PS5 or what but I was hoping to get some help from this community. Thank you all in advance for the help!
The screen will be the full width of the room which is 18.1’ wide and full height of the room which is a bit over 10 feet. That puts the diagonal screen size at like 248”. The room is 28 feet in depth so I’ll have ample space for the seating area but just curious if the screen size will be uncomfortable. Anyone dealt with this before?
