Soundbars
99.9% of the time Soundbars or HTiB (Home Theater in a Box) systems are not a good investment of your time and money.
It is the general consensus of r/hometheater not to recommend these things and instead simply steer a user toward a 2.0 or 2.1 system made of quality, Audio-Centric name brand components which are easy to assemble and cheap enough for low budget or space conscious buyers.
Most can be expanded to 5.1 if you buy the correct items in the correct order.
For further explanation please read Why You Shouldn't Buy a Soundbar

Dear hometheater People,
I would like to get your opinion on my setup sketch, as I have mixed feelings about it.
I might got some number wrong somewhere, because I'm pretty tired.
I calculated my distances based on angles by Dolby guides (the detailed one) and best practices I already read. I have some limitations in the room, which I had to calculate with, but at the end (after hopefully I virtualize 2 speakers to a better place with room correction) I would have a centered MLP.
The room has a big fireplace, so I can't put the fronts any more wider, but the right surround will be wider and set up in Audyssey. Same goess for the right back surround.
I tried Audio Advice page tool, but it was extremely laggy through VPN, but it gave me something completely different, starting with a way too close viewing distance.
Room:
Lenght: 530cm
Width: 370cm
Height: 270cm
I know it's ugly and way not size accurate, it's just a sketch, but I'm happy to answer any questions.
The result would be something like this:
This case, the angles would be the following from top view:
Front: 25°
Surround: 115°
Back: 140°
Top front: 40°
Top rear: 140°
The angles I used for atmos spacing lateral:
Surround would be ~10° above MLP
45+10/2=50°
The angles I used for atmos spacing longitudinal:
L/R is around listening height, so EF=0
TF=45°
Would this work?
Did I make some errors, or overlooked something?
Any advice or feedback is much appreciated.
Wish you a great day!
What would be the upgrade for a Jbl stage a130? A stage a180? Give me tips
Hello folks, I’m looking for in-wall speaker options for my front and center channels due to space limitations. Since I prefer using my existing OLED TV for video, I’m concerned about whether in-wall speakers might create vibrations that could affect the TV, which is wall-mounted on the same surface.
I’ve never used in-wall speakers or seen them in action, so I’m unsure how much impact they might have. Would vibrations be an issue, and if so, what are the best ways to minimize them? Thanks
I have a Klipsch 504C II, and was looking around for a new center speaker, when I randomly came across this site that sells some mod kit for the speaker. Are the GR-Research modifications miracle workers, or are they just kind of a neat/novelty thing to do to marginally improve your speaker? Reason I ask is they're not cheap, about $350 with shipping, and would require at least some modest electronics repair knowledge.
I'm comfortable with tinkering, but I'm curious, does this make the 504C II sound like an $800 speaker (~450 for speaker and 350 for mod kit), or does it just make better sense to just buy a speaker that was better built from the start?
I don't know anything about audio equipment, I've only had my speakers for about a year, and so I really don't know much about any of this. The only thing I'm confident in is my ability to perform the mod. Any input you want to share will be greatly appreciated.
Just purchased 2 of these speakers, and when I got them wired up I found they produced no sound. I have them running on a Denon AVR-S500BT.
Is my receiver just not pumping out enough sound? I’m stressing out because I was so excited to get them that I tore one of the boxes completely apart in the process of getting it out, so I don’t know how I would even return them given their size and weight if they turn out to be defective.
Hello to everyone here. I know struggling with long HDMI runs and finding the best solution to support low latency and high bandwidth is a goal for many with a projector setup.
I was able to get some help on r/FiberOptics. See my post here, which got me across the finish line to get this solution, https://shop.fibercommand.com/products/purefiber-ultravision-hdmi-2-1-48gbps-4k120hz-8k60hz-hdr-bundle-cable for a fraction of the price.
I can confirm that this Ruipro product works great with a keystone jack, such as this one here to get you a clean setup without any loss in signal. The part I was missing was the correct patch cable to go from the keystone jack to my source HDMI. This patch cable needs to be a Type A, Male MPO to Female MPO 12-strand patch cable. I ordered this one here. Order the correct lengths on everything for your needs.
This whole setup cost me less than $150. Much less than the Fibercommand kit. The HDMI handshake is instant, and the full signal is lighting up the project.
Hopefully this saves someone some time in the future.
So I just put together my Dolby atmos system and for components I'm running svs prime satellites and center, and an svs sb1000 pro sub with B&W DM610i fronts and then the little Sony upward firing Atmos speakers. The B&Ws are connected to an adcom GFA-545 and all the rest of the speakers are on a Yamaha RX-A2A.
My issue is that I can barely ever hear the surround speakers unless it is a REALLY well mixed scene and the faux overheads don't sound overhead at all they sound like the front. My couch back comes up to around neck level so no issues there and my ceilings are flat and not very high up I have not measured them but by my eye they look like the perfect height for the angle that these Sony speakers are at.
Does anyone have any tips for better immersion? It really sounds the same as before I connected all these other speakers.
And the YPAO room adjustment doesn't seem to want to also use my subwoofer and I don't know why.
Last thing, does anyone know how to make the stero audio from my Wiim streamer not come through the surround speakers?
Thanks!
Help! I've had my TCL Roku tv for a little over 2 years, today when I went to use it, it's blacks! The first time I turned it on, I could just barely see the screen. I turned it off, turned it back on (as most do) and the TCL screen flashed for 1 second in all color then went black again. The TV is on because when I use the remote, it makes noise. I've unplugged and replugged all the cords, I've left the power cord unplugged for several minutes and still nothing. Advice?
Hi all. I'm in the process of building out my ultimate home theater audio setup and have largely narrowed down my choices to the SVS line. I've noted that SVS currently offers multiple tiers of the Ultra Evolution speakers, including three versions of their tower speakers: the Evo Tower, the Evo Titan, and the Evo Pinnacle. They also appear to still have stock of their older, discontinued Ultra line of speakers, offered at a discount.
Has anyone here listened to more than one of these options and if so, can you tell me if there is a significant difference between the older Ultra speakers and the newer Evolution line options. Likewise, is there a significant difference between the three new Evolution choices? The price difference between the old Ultra towers and the new, top of the line Ultra Evo Pinnacle is pretty large: about $3,000.
For context, my use case will be ~59% gaming, 40% movies, 1% music. If the newer Ultra Evo lineup is much better than the older Ultra speakers then I have no issue spending the money; same for if the Pinnacle is leaps and bounds better than the two lower Ultra Evo models. I just don't want to spend 200% more money for a 5% improvement in sound.
Just looking for something modest but solid quality for a non-gamer, that won't go to crap in 3 years. Have had mixed experience with LGs and Samsung, so I'm open.
I want a 5.0.4.. i currently have the marantz sr6011 and i can feel the dolby atmos is not as theater like anymore, also the new lg c4 has earc support and the receiver doesnt have which outputs atmos/surround and not clear atmos and dtx x but neural x so no clear atmos..
i have connected the playstation to the tv and the tv to the receiver to avoid the limitations.
I want to buy the marantz cinema 50 which the difference will be noticeable in everything i guess.. but when are the new receivers coming? Is it worth to wait? I dont know the plan of how often marantz releases receivers so when is the next line expected?
We’ve just upgraded our TV to an LG OLED my wife inherited. It’s a visible improvement on our old one, but there’s one problem: we hate the remote.
The pointer thingy? Get that gone. Hate it. It’s never useful. So I went to buy a replacement remote, but the options were kind of uninspiring.
Even for just own device, where universality isn’t required (we run everything in TV apps, Plex/YouTube mostly), what is the best remote to get? Thanks in advance for any help and advice!
I am completely new to audio systems. I've been researching for so many hours and days. I don't even know almost 95% of terms and specs. But so far my I came up with purchasing a Sony Str AN1000 and actually both a DN10 and a DN12 subwoofer. But for not that large a room I suspect the DN10 will work better. Also the DN10 is $369 while the DN12 is $750 I think. So how are my choices so far? Next I need towers and center right? But I'm too confused. I have small-medium living room and I don't have to have the best. Just decent quality and mainly for movies and PS5. Because I want to have something now I was thinking of just getting a cheaper bookshelf pair of speakers and then can relax and take time shopping for the rest? Good choices? Suggestions? Thank you!
I currently own a s570bt but I want 2 more channels for some of that sweet atmos and more power. I’m running rp8000fii’s as my mains and I have a matching center and surround. Obviously I’ll notice a difference with 2 atmos channels but will I notice an improvement in sound quality? I think the 8000’s sound fantastic currently but will the extra power add any more clarity or detail? Will the upgraded innards of the x2700 provide more oomph? Or will I largely be wasting money that I could save by just getting the s760h?
I have a 3.0 system with Klipsch RP-5000F and Klipsch RP-500C and am looking for an AVR.
I'm torn between these three options for which I currently have used offers.
The Marantz is really appealing because of the slimline design!
I will, at most, upgrade to a 5.1 system in the future.
The system is used 80% for movies and 20% for music.
Here are the options:
Which one would you choose?
So my wife picked up a cheap nothing special projector for my birthday last year something for me and kids to use in the basement. Well I’ve slowly been upgrading things and making it more of a home theater. Got a silver screen projector screen, set up the room for family hangouts… the problem is, projector is budget but im not ready to upgrade it yet and it has really crappy speakers. I don’t have anything set up for it sound now except a Sonos 5 but the delay is killing me. So I want to upgrade a bit but I’m not ready to go nuts yet. I checked out the FAQs and I see a good AVR is on sale that’s recommend so I’ll probably pick that up. The issue is I don’t have any other speakers and I’m not ready to spend real money yet. I just want something to sound theater-y to some kids. I saw a deal for a full set of 5.1 Klipsch Reference Theater Pack for $400. I know in the world of speakers that price point probably makes them garbage but I figured this would be better than a sound bar which is my other consideration. If anyone has a better suggestion please let me know…
Hello, everyone! I'm a newbie to all of this, for the most part, and have childhood rich with vintage audio systems memories. I think that is why I opted not to do simple soundbar system.
I have picked up a good condition Pioneer VSX-818V-K. So I could also connect a projector and video options via HDMI.
I haven't had a lot of luck getting all of the copper wired speakers to detect or the Onkyo subwoofer.
I have confirmed that all the speakers worked on non 5.1 setups, outside of the subwoofer, as it has nothing to truly test upon.
I am wondering if anyone can provide some guidance or feedback for setting this up? I have a center speaker plugged in for some testing, so the connections are mostly unobscured.
I just have a bluetooth adapter connected for testing at this time.
I feel as if I am missing something incredibly obvious.
Im looking to get a 10+ metre hdmi cable for a 4k 60hz tv to connect to my pc and wondering do I need higher than 2.0hdmi? Im seeing conflicting answers on google about the specs of 2.0/2.1 hdmi for the refresh rate and hdr10 support, and any recommendations of cheaper cables on amazon uk or de? Minimum length of 10 meters but if it is 15 or 20 i can route to hide the extra. Thanks in advance.
When looking at US prices there is a big price difference between the two models but in my country their prices are almost same. Afaik, C755 series is same with QM751G. Which one should i choose?
I got a Bravia 8 OLED TV and while movies and shows look fantastic, I was wondering if Blurays are something that I should invest in order to take the most advantage of the TV.
I do have points on Sony website so I can buy one player (probably the UBPX700M) for half the price but is it worth it? If so do you recommend any other player?
Thanks!
I am looking for a good TV for my home theater, around 3K$. I have an 11.2.4 setup with 4k now. My 65" is good but an 85" would be better. Thank you in advance.
Hi! Just wanted to share our humble setup - we closed on a new build with a media room almost a year ago and left it empty the whole time because we were too intimidated by the idea of setting it up (like, I didn't even know what a receiver was). A few weeks ago we finally decided to do some research and figure out how to set up a home theater, and this subreddit was a lot of help. One of our biggest priorities was making it look clean, so we decided to go with an AT screen (this is an 11'4"x16'6" room). I know our speakers might not be up to this subreddit's standards, but we are not audiophiles and it sounds amazing to us, especially coming from TV audio.
Sharing our costs below so others can have an idea of what it'll take since I know I had no idea what it'd cost at first (our room was prewired for 5.1 sound). Next up is adding more seating and putting up wall decor!

Ok so I have the matching center channel for my speaker system... however I just switched to a projector set up with an accoustically tranparent screen, which allows me to hide my fronts behind the screen. I have the choice between continuing to use the center speaker, or swapping it out for a speaker that matches all the other (bookshelf in this case) speakers in the setup. The other speakers have more range on the lowend.. is there ANY audio related reason I should continue using the center speaker over swapping it for another matching bookshelf?
I know I haven't named the speaker models.. but let's assume it's any matching model line from any brand. Where the center has all the pros and cons of center channels, when compared to the bookshelves/towers of that same model line.
Edit/bonus question: would TWO of them in series (or parallel forget which way it would go for my amp, although I could also run a line out to a stereo amp I have lying around too), be better than one? Essentially I have an 7.1.4 system, but my AVR can only do 7.1.2 or 5.1.4 and I've decided I prefer the 5.1.4, so I have two extra bookshelves to work with. I feel like two could interfere with each other some how... but I'd hate to have one collecting dust along with the center.
I snagged a great deal on the 683S2's yesterday. I know that matching these speakers isn't likely to happen unless I find a good deal on an HTM61/71 s2/s3 center, so I'm wondering which center channel y'all would recommend that will sound good for off-axis primary seating positions (galley style with the TV framed between seating)?
I've read the recommendations here and the AVS forums, but without being able to audition these in a store, I have no idea if they will work well for my setup. Figured I'd ask here as someone might have suggestions for my seating arrangement. Thanks.
I am searching for a white subwoofer, I noticed Minx X301 Subwoofer but maybe you can advice me another model.
Budget is around $300 (found Min X301 refurbished on $350)
