I’ve often found when British musicians take inspiration from American mythology the results can be really interesting. From Langley Park to Memphis is a high point of that creative exchange.
It’s also a terrific spring-summer listen.
Each track is beguiling in their ability to be both candy for the ear and the soul. It’s like a lost ‘60s musical filtered through tight-post punk musicianship and crystal-clean ‘80s technology. It sounds suspect, but it works. There’s something so rooted in it, yet unclassifiable. Pseudo-musical? Cole Porter-revival? Kitsch-pop?
My vote for one of the top forgotten albums of the decade. It changed my life (for a little while) and definitely broadened my ideas of what’s possible in pop music when truly talented people run with their ideas.
I always feel like Mary Jane Girls don’t get the 80s recognition they deserve. “In My House” was such staple to the soundtrack of my 80s youth
