British pop + kitschy Americana

I’ve often found when British musicians take inspiration from American mythology the results can be really interesting. From Langley Park to Memphis is a high point of that creative exchange.

It’s also a terrific spring-summer listen.

Each track is beguiling in their ability to be both candy for the ear and the soul. It’s like a lost ‘60s musical filtered through tight-post punk musicianship and crystal-clean ‘80s technology. It sounds suspect, but it works. There’s something so rooted in it, yet unclassifiable. Pseudo-musical? Cole Porter-revival? Kitsch-pop?

My vote for one of the top forgotten albums of the decade. It changed my life (for a little while) and definitely broadened my ideas of what’s possible in pop music when truly talented people run with their ideas.

The Cure’s 8th studio album ‘Disintegration’ was released on this day in 1989. It’s my favorite Cure album.

Mary Jane Girls

I always feel like Mary Jane Girls don’t get the 80s recognition they deserve. “In My House” was such staple to the soundtrack of my 80s youth
