Some blasphemy / George Jones

I can appreciate George Jones' voice. It's a perfect voice in many ways. His early stuff on Mercury was pretty good. But man, WTF is up with his choices in the 60s 70s and early 80s. Talk about shitty production choices and wasted potential! So many strings and backup singers and soundalike slow plodding songs. His Tammy Wynette duets aren't that good or interesting, especially considering the alternatives at the time. I feel the same way he did about He Stopped Loving Her Today. I get people revering his voice, but if we're being honest, his song and production choices left a lot to be desired. In that regard he's like the anti George Strait, who has consistently chosen good songs and production to complement an equally impressive voice, but GS clearly has the stronger discography.

I’ve never listened to Bob Wills. Where should I start?

I’ve loved Waylon’s “Bob Wills is Still the King” for years, but I’ve just never bothered to actually look up the King’s music. Where do I start to hear what Waylon was talking about?

More music like Roger Miller’s The 3rd Time Around?

Roger is one of my favorite country/country-adjacent artists and I would love to find more songs in his vein of writing. Essentially, I am looking for some more country-ish style songs with quirky and odd lyricism and an unconventional approach to writing.

Fancy - Acoustic Version

I am loving this acoustic cover of Fancy by Reba Mcentire. Better than the original hit recording.

I am working on a list of Legendary Female Country artists. Who do you like that I should include on my playlist?

Number one country hit form 1978, sounds more like yacht rock.

Whenever I see people talking about how country used to be more genuine and blah blah blah, I have to laugh. Pop music began infecting country music almost immediately. And the peak of that isn't today. It was 1979. This is a yacht rock song. It is not a country song. The production has nothing to do with traditional country. The chord progression. The melody. The singing delivery.

Don't complain about how pop is infecting country today. Just got find the country music you like. If you can, find an appreciation for the pop stuff. It isn't all bad. But, if you can't...don't waste your life being a person who defines themselves by disliking things or being a snob. Enjoy what you enjoy. Ignore the rest.
