Virtuality is the environment in which users of virtual reality, augmented reality, or mixed reality interact with. It can be used to refer to any of the three types of digital realities, though it is most commonly viewed as the short hand noun for "Virtual Reality" or VR.

Welcome to /r/Virtuality! Click above to subscribe!

You've landed in Reddit's meeting space and network for all things virtuality. The term "Virtuality" is an umbrella term that includes:

(VR) Virtual Reality,

(AR) Augmented Reality,

& (MR) Mixed Reality.

Discuss virtuality news, speculation, games, hardware, software, VXPs [movies] , books, other media, or anything else virtuality related! Share a personal project? Go for it! Either way, it's all virtuality and it's all awesome!

Assigning Link Flair - Advice

Tagging your posts as VR, AR, MR, MV, or NA is advised. If you don't feel like doing this, feel free to post anyway, we will assign a flair for you.

Use the VR flair for posts about virtual reality related topics.

Reserve AR flair (augmented reality) for non-immersive devices such as cell phones and cameras. Using AR for immersive subjects is okay, however, if the article linked to refers to the technology as augmented reality.

Use MR (mixed reality) flair for headsets such as Hololens and Magic Leap, as many of their features lean towards VR with real world elements transposed. Yes, they may be augmenting reality, but they are the only devices capable of mixed reality. So we are making this distinction for organizational purposes.

Use the MV flair for topics that are metaversal in nature, or more precisely, about the metaverse. The metaverse crosses all realities - VR, AR, and MR, so it is not directly specific to any of them, despite mostly being related to VR at the moment.

If you are unsure what flair to assign, please assign NA (not applicable) and a moderator may choose to adjust your flair assignment.

Beta Testers Wanted for New Free XR App

We’re soft launching Salsa XR, an XR app for learning basic steps of salsa. We’re in the soft launch phase and could use some hands-on feedback from the community.

Doesn’t matter if you have prior dancing experience – we’d like to hear your thoughts about everything: the quality of the tutorial and the dance coach, the immersiveness of the app, its stability, etc.

It’s JetStyle’s non-commercial pet project, and we’re planning to keep it free-of-charge. We want to contribute to the mass adoption of XR, and Salsa XR is how we do this. It’s a useful XR app that solves a practical task and integrates well into everyday life.

What's some features and designs you would like to see in the upcoming Samsung Mixed Reality Headset? 😎

What's some features and designs you would like to see in the upcoming Samsung Mixed Reality Headset?

I can't help but be hyped, as a VR/XR tech fan and after the release of the Apple Vision Pro and years of Quest headsets, I am excited for a high end headset for XR that won't be locked to the Apple Ecosystem, since I don't use a IPhone or MacBook.

I did Demo the Apple Vision Pro twice now, and that is amazing 👏 🤩. Borderline was about to jump ship for a moment there. Lol.

I made this thread to perhaps get a discussion started on some potential design request for the upcoming headset. Could be software side or hardware design.
I can start by sharing some ideas 💡

    1. I want a large soft stock headstrap with built in dial, like the Apple Vision Pro. I was pretty shocked how much I liked the Apple Vision Pro default strap. I changed my Quest 2 and 3 straps to more elite third party straps. They great for gaming. But uncomfortable to lay down in bed and use. I like how Apple designed theirs to be able to have a dial built in while still a soft strap.

    2. Window Position Lock 🔐. We see how Quest 3 don't really have this. Well AVP does have a travel mode that does this to some level. But this should be a default option to lock a screen to your view so it follows your head as it moves. Allow it to be unlocked so it can be placed anywhere, like Apple Vision Pro currently does.

    3. Slimmer design from face to front. I don't mind it being wider but I want less front bulk. Apple Vision Pro could possibly been smaller without that eyesight feature. It's cool, but I may be willing to sacrifice that if the front still looked good on its own.

    4. built in mirroring features for Android Smartphones and Windows PCs. Similar to what Vision Pro does here, but for the Android and Window's side of things.

    5. External Battery/Puck. I actually support thus concept as far back as Magic Leap. But I do like how Apple Vision Pro does that locking mechanism. Would be nice here as well. Also a data port USB C on the battery would be nice for Pass-through data connection.

    6. USB C port on the side of the headset like Quest 3 has. Allows connection of devices to it. Example, on my Quest 3, I can connect a USB C to MIDI for connecting a Piano to my headset to play PianoVision with. Pretty awesome. Some people may plug in a external IR light for hand tracking in the dark.

    7. Full Hand Tracking and Eye Tracking Ui controls, BUT with optional First Party VR controllers with tracking capabilities. I like where Apple Vision Pro, went with the Eye tracking software Hand tracking, but I don't like how it outright abandoned VR controllers. Should still be optional for gaming in VR. 2D console controllers don't cut it. It's not the same at all for VR gaming. At least make this optional, even if it's a separate purchase.

Are WMR headsets just not good for modern PC gaming or is it just my performance?

    My specs:

    HP Reverb G1

    5700x

    32 gb RAM

    RTX 2060 6 GB

Latest Windows 10, latest GPU drivers, and latest game updates

I have been gaming with my dad's hand-me-down Reverb G1 and it has been really crappy these days. He plays in the G1 with 1 game and it has been serving him well, but for me, I play a variety of steam games on VR. Some of them use Steam VR, some of them don't use it, others you can switch between that or OpenXR.

Recently however, things have been extremely bad for me. When the computer restarts, the headset is not found even though I lay it on the floor in the corner and don't touch it. I have to manually replug it back in to detect. Then, it forgets the room boundaries, so I have to set that again.

I recently put fresh out of the box batteries (DuraCell) in the controllers, 2 days later, battery low warnings and the left controller loses power constantly.

I haven't dropped them. I haven't bent the cables. It has been exactly like this for ages, yet they are a common occurence for the past 2 months.

    Not to mention game performance:

    • Pavlov VR has lost all my previous mappings and even though there are ways to bring back those mappings through a really strenous way, they are not permanent and sometimes cause the game to crash.

    • Some games like BeamNG don't even detect the headset, so I can't even play it.

    • Some games crash almost every time I try to run them - like F1 22 (but that could be a VRAM problem)

Is it just me or does WMR suck these days ?

Which companies use AR/ VR in manual assembly?

    Greetings from Germany,

I am currently writing my bachelor's thesis in business administration.

Thematically, it is about the use of AR / VR in manual assembly for personnel development. This can be done on the line or off the line for training purposes.

I am currently looking for such companies that use it.

Unfortunately the internet does not give much and big companies like Volvo, Audi and co. do not want to give interviews.

Therefore the question to you: Do you guys know of any smaller companies I could contact regarding this?

    Thanks in advance!

One of the most comprehensive, imaginative AR/VR use cases videos ever made

I made this, it's a little lengthy but I don't think you're going to find something like this anywhere else. I list everything from all the use cases of fully mature AR glasses, to the distant future of AR/VR and how they could function in tandem with direct neural interfaces. I discuss a lot of BCI use cases that are separate from AR/VR as well at length. I put a lot of time into this video and intend to post more like this in the future, so l'd appreciate it if everyone would check it out!

Reality Mixer now fully supports Windows Mixed Reality (WMR) headsets

Reality Mixer app using cameras of Windows Mixed Reality headset, showing camera calibration settings

Reality Mixer app using cameras of Windows Mixed Reality headset, showing view in headset

Reality Mixer is an app that mixes part of your real word into the VR world. It now officially supports Windows Mixed Reality (WMR) headsets.

The cameras on the headset are used to cut out a piece of the real world and show it in VR. The (part of the) camera image is shown on the sides of one or more boxes that you can place anywhere.

It can be used to see real objects in VR, such as your keyboard, a racing wheel, button box, HOTAS, an instrument panel, etc.

You can also use it to see the floor beneath your feet when you gaze down, or to see your lap when in BigScreen. For racing simulation games, you can use the app to make a cockpit so you will see your arms and legs from the corner of your eye.

It's possible to use both cameras of the WMR headset, but you can also use just one. If you use both, it's best to align the left and right camera images so you get a correct stereoscopic view. This alignment is done on the Camera Calibration screen. It uses one of your controllers to position the camera image. When performing the calibration, place the controller at the same distance from the headset as the object will be that you want to see in VR. E.g. when calibrating for a racing wheel, put the controller next the wheel and perform calibration while sitting in the same place you'll be when playing the game. This ensures correct stereo overlap at that distance.
