Hi y'all! This is a performance I recently did for a Talent Show competition at my school, and I was looking for some feedback on how I can improve my Vocal Placement. Right now, I feel like I'm "swallowing" the sound, and it's affecting my pitch (I tend to be flat on lower notes) and vibrato (I'm having trouble sustaining it in the note) throughout the song. I want my belts to be clear (and in tune) but also well supported and sustainable, so any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :)
I’m trying to analyze and be able to hear good vs bad technique. I asked the same question on here about good technique and was like…yah they are good but then I realized I have no clue what makes them good.
So hopefully this doesn’t start fan wars or anything. Let’s try to keep a productive conversation. I’m sure there are amazing performers who can sing but just do things a harmful to their vocal health.
If y’all could provide a reasoning to your answer so I could understand that would be great🙏🩷
I am new to singing and have been practicing without any experienced vocal coach. So I had a doubt, I have been facing this issue for so long. It is about clearing my throat all the time , doesn't matter whether I am singing or not but I always clear my throat to get rid of the excess phlegm. But this strains my vocal cords. I have gone through a lot ways to cure this but none helped. Does anyone have a solution of this?
(I know this is kind of a weird sub to post this in BUT I didn’t know where else to go… r/linguistics and r/phonetics are too academic for this dumb a question but I still wanted some expertise from folks with an understanding of vocology)
I was just rewatching The Master and there’s a small part played by the actor David Warshofsky. His voice reminded me of someone, and I realized it was Tom Hanks. They share a similar vocal quality that I can’t pinpoint—a sort of bark? It’s not nasally but something else. If anyone knows how to define or explain it scientifically, lmk because I’m curious!
.
we have an upcoming competition this february 14—it’s a chorale competition per college department. i’m new to chorale, and we only have 2 weeks to prepare.
here’s the problem: i’m a tenor, and there’s this one line in our part where the note is just too high (it's like the first is smooth and then it will transition to like high). whenever i try to reach it, i run out of breath. i’ve been practicing proper breathing and i know it takes time, but even when there’s a pause in the line, i still look like i’m gasping for air.
any tips? i’ve watched a bunch of breathing exercises and continue to practice but it might take a while. help!
Hi, I'm a beginner when it comes to singing and I wanted to know if doing stuff like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCUdOedT7Vw , would help and develop my voice or should I start with something different? How did you guys start?
Hello guys I want to learn how to sing but don't where to start and I don't understand why my voice sound like a kid, maybe any advice or recommendations I would really appreciated it very much.
Hello all!
I am an alto, with a range of C3-E5. I'm looking for what my college lists as "art" pieces to use in an audition. I'm trying to become a choral music teacher. I don't have an audition or anything scheduled yet, I just want to get some practice in. I used to be in chorus years ago, but not since middle school (I am now 22 :'D) I was also in musical theatre, through only for a short bit.
Please help a girl out! Any suggestions would be appreciated, but especially those marked by difficulty and range! Thanks!! <3
It's very okay (mid to bad lol) .. because i was just improvising while i was sit down in my living room, and i decided to record to listen to myself and see what could i improve

What's your opinion about clavicular breathing for singing?
i can’t for the life of me sing glinda part is it just because i am not great at singing or its just way out of my range? i have included clip of me attempting to sing no one mourns the wicked
Many years ago, in the before times, I sang with a band that played shows all over the tri-state area (Long Island, NY, NJ, etc...). We had a pretty good following, but times change, and we eventually all went on our separate ways. Flash forward 30 years, and I wanted to see if I've still got the ability to carry a tune. So I did a couple of recordings and thought they sounded okay. Now here's where you come in. This clip is super short, and is the very end of the song Vienna, by Billy Joel (yeah, I bought the album when it first came out). So, is it any good? Should I start singing/recording again?
I’ve had range issues for a while and I couldn’t figure out my range or voice type. My range has been Eb2/E2-B3/C4 I thought I was a bass coz my voice would break around G3 and be in falsetto around C4 I’ve only recently been able to get the feeling of breath support and my voice felt so much healthier after singing and the G3-C4 range is as a lot smoother.
I’ve just been talking to someone from another room and had to yell so I thought I’d use a pitch app to see where I’m at and it said E4/F4/F#4 a few times.
Only thing is my voice hurts a bit from not using any form of technique. What do I need to be doing to actually use this range in singing and not have pain and eventually make it sound good?
So on Sunday, I got carried away singing, and most of my range is disparate. It has been a week, and I now have a cough and my throat burns. When I try to access my head voice quietly, it is patchy, but I can still whistle, reaching from D7 to C8 as a male. I had this ability before, but it would only appear after singing for over 10 minutes, and doing so would cause me to lose my head voice.
I worried about nodules, but I am assuming that if I can whistle and control pitch, it is unlikely and more likely strained and inflamed vocal cords.
P.S.; It is more a gap; I can sing in passaggio—all fine. No issues with head voice if sung for too long; it breaks to a lower note, and my lowest note sounds more gravely.
Just worried lol
Her voice was off the charts in every way, even in her later years she could still hit the notes from when she was younger. Her head voice especially was so effortless and beautiful.
I’m 37 and have been taking lessons for about a year. I’ve definitely made improvements but I’m miles away from my goal. The studio I take lessons at has a recital coming up and my teacher is encouraging me to do it as a first performance. She says there are a range of abilities at the recitals and it’s a supportive environment, far friendlier than an audition.
It sounds pretty terrifying to me. I barely sing in front of my family, can’t imagine being in front of strangers and even performing close to my best.
Also I feel like my age will make me stand out. It’s cute to watch kids learn but adults…. Not so much.
Has anyone tried this and have any experience to share?
Edit: okay you all convinced me! I just signed up 🫣 Now on to picking my song and practicing the bejeesus out of it!
Should I be concerned?? How can I get rid of this?
i’m looking for an amp that is strictly for vocals . i want effects like compression and eq. maybe reverb and delay (saturation/distortion would be a massive plus) i find it surprising that i can’t find anything like this on the market. i’m open to small/portable PA systems with onboard effects too.
use case: rehearsal and performances in small bars. it should be able to compete with unmic’d drums without getting feedback.
