New UCSF RN, new to SF!

Hi all! I’m a 25 y/o female, just got a staff job as a L&D RN at UCSF starting end of January- beyond thrilled. I love the city and am excited to explore! I’m wondering about the best neighborhoods to live for someone wanting things to do/nightlife/restaurants. Decently close to UCSF Mission Bay, with fun restaurants and nightlife. I’m leaning towards the Mission, Haight, or Russian Hill. Would love to be able to use public transportation to/from work. I also have a corgi, so any dog-friendly areas are a huge plus. (What are peoples’ favorite dog parks in the city??) And, also… is dating as horrible in SF as it is in the rest of the country? :/ really looking to make new friends/date/build a social group and community, any and all suggestions are so appreciated!

About Measure K...

I'm not going to tell you how to vote, but to put it out there to present my bias, I am voting no. The only thing I ask of anyone debating this proposition on either side is to actually read the legal text in its entirety. There is seriously no mention of any plans to construct or fund a park. This isn't opinion or a persuasion, this is literally fact as the proposition does not include any of these plans and everyone should be aware. The proposition is simply to permanently close the road to private vehicles 7 days a week, no more, no less. I see a lot of people debating this with the perspective that a new park will be built due to all of the marketing of "Yes on Ocean Beach Park", but unfortunately that is just not the case. I don't mind how you vote on this proposition, but please, read the text and make your decision based on what is actually being presented. That is all thx

Did anyone’s dog go missing near OB tonight?

The dog was wandering the middle of the street and we couldn’t find its owner. We brought her home so nothing would happen to her and am going to vet tomorrow morning to see if she’s chipped. She’s a very sweet doggo!

Some lady got mad at me for being in a hurry at Safeway

I was walking out of self checkout at the Marina Safeway. When I first moved to San Francisco they told me it was called Dateway because you could just bump into your match in the grocery store. What a cute idea before the hellish landscape of online dating. Some grocery stores even pride themselves on how narrow their aisles are causing frequent collisions which lead to friendly conversations. Think your gus’s, bi rite, rainbow, Trader Joe’s. We want to get tight in some stores so we can talk. Anyway this lady wasn’t about to walk into me. She said like really upset “oh you MUST BE IN A HURRY PLEASE GO AHEAD!” Before turning the other way and hustling out of the store in the opposite direction. I did not know it was rude to be in a hurry. I didn’t think it was polite to linger in the self check out at Safeway. Anyway, I decide to wait a few minutes. Play a little experiment. I decide to walk into people as sort of a survey, albeit more determined to walk into people. Most people, stepped aside. Nobody said anything. It was just that lady losing her cool at the Marina Safeway.

Does your child(ren) go to private school?

If so, which one? Why did you choose the school you did? I need recommendations as I am feeling overwhelmed with options and can’t find a good list online to compare and contrast. I am wanting to enroll my child starting in middle school.

They’re currently in 4th grade so we still have quite some time to research and apply. I would love to hear feedback from parents whose children went to private school in San Francisco and/or adults without children who are graduates of private school in the Bay Area. I never went to private school so I don’t have first hand experience with any of this.

I would rather it not be a religious institution as my child is nonbinary and out. I’m solely concerned about the academic and small class size aspect. A little about us/my child:

-We only speak English but I would love for them to be able to learn a second language if not two additional languages. Immersion school seems good for this, I think?

-My child is trans-masculine and uses they/he pronouns. This is a fairly new revelation and I am in full support of who they are and want their personhood to be fully respected at the institution they get enrolled in.

-My child has ASD and is in general ed classes but receives supports through speech therapy and counseling. Speech therapy is for pragmatic and conversational skill only. School offers counseling but we also seek private counseling so it is not a concern and I am ok with outsourcing the supports they currently get.

-We are a spiritual household and I encourage my child to find solace in the spiritual/religious guidance they see fit. I come from a devoutly Christian background and my partner comes from a Jewish background. Neither of us belong to a specific faith, church, temple, etc. I believe in God but I do not do any sort of worship with my child and I have a more eastern/hindu aligned view. My child believes in God and prays to Jesus as that is what they see our family members do and perhaps makes the most sense for them right now. I think it’s best my child explores religion as freely as possible. Religious private schools are a concern of mine for this reason as well as reasons stated above.

-My child is at or slight above grade level currently in all subjects. They’re a precocious reader and writer. Math is self admittedly their favorite subject. I am encouraging them to study a hard science once we reach college so a school that would nurture that interest would be great.

-Their extracurriculars currently are chess classes and band (trumpet). I would like them to have the chance to explore more team activities over their school years. So schools with extracurriculars that are not solely sports is also important.

-I come from a poverty level background and grew up with very little. I’ve done well for myself as an adult and my child doesn’t realize the stark difference in our upbringings (thankfully) but I feel a bit timid navigating this. I don’t want to go with any school that seems great from the surface but isn’t so great in the end. I am at a loss for what to look out for, what kind of questions I should be asking when looking at different campuses/going to open houses.

Please help! Tyia!

TLDR; I want to enroll my kid into an inclusive private school for 6th-8th grade. I grew up poor and feel that is impacting my confidence in making the right decision. Seeking feedback from other parents and graduates on what to look for and overall school recommendations.

Moves to America, two days later a Blue Angels parachutist lands on her, and now lawsuit pending.

The family of a 17-year-old girl on Wednesday released video of the moment a Navy parachutist landed on top of her at the Marina Green during Fleet Week, and new revelations about her injuries were also made public.

She also identified herself by name for the first time.

The 23-second video clip, taken by Millicent "Mia" DeGuzman shows the seconds preceding the collision portraying the confusion as to where the parachutist was going to land. After the Navy parachutist lands on top of her, viewers can hear him asking: "Are you OK?"

The video cuts out before Mia answers.

"This was my first airshow and I had no idea I was in danger," Mia said in a statement provided by her newly hired attorney, Tanya Gomerman.

She said that she had immigrated to the United States two days before the show and was excited to explore the city with her family.

"Now I can’t move without their help and doctors say I may never be able to do the things I once could," her statement continued. "Beyond the physical pain, the emotional trauma is overwhelming—what was supposed to be a joyful start to a new life here has turned into a nightmare I relive every day."

After the collision on Oct. 14, authorities described Mia's injuries as minor. In a statement on Wednesday, the lawyers described the injuries as "serious."

Mia was taken to the hospital where she was treated for two fractures to her pelvis, her attorneys said.

The injury required surgery in which large screws were inserted to hold her damaged pelvis together, her lawyers said.

Additionally, Mia’s mother, Jhoanna was diagnosed with a concussion and had bruising in her upper arm, her lawyers said.

"There is no doubt that this is not what this parachutist or the Navy wanted to happen, but regrettably, a young woman was injured and was left with a mountain of medical bills," Gomerman said in a statement. "She faces a long, difficult recovery and is unable to handle even the most basic tasks without support from her family. It’s a tragic incident that raises questions about safety protocols and accountability at events involving such high-risk displays."

After the collision, the Navy issued a statement.

"Our thoughts are with the individual and their family. Safety is our number one priority. We cannot immediately assess what happened; however, we will review this incident to determine the cause," the U.S. Navy said.

The parachutist didn't sustain any injuries, the Navy said. Video showed him walking away from the field.

It wasn't immediately made clear what caused the Navy parachutist to land outside the pre-planned area.

The family has not filed a lawsuit at this time.

What Business Does Marjan Philhour run?

I am in District 1, I'm trying to decide which candidate to vote for. I've read a lot about how Marjan Philhour is a small business owner, but I can't find anywhere exactly what that business is / was. If someone is going to say they're a business owner, I feel like I should know what business it is?

Christmas walks/Lights

Hello

Does anyone have a good Christmas walking routes downtown to see the cities festive side?

We have friends and family visiting around that time and would like to do some walking around to see Christmas decorations and stuff.

It will be all adults visiting so bars/hotels are also on the table if anyone has any recommendations.

Thanks!

Can I bring my dog to jury duty?

This might sound ridiculous, but does anyone know if SF allows you to bring dogs to jury duty? I have a letter from a therapist showing that he is an emotional support animal, but that's not the same as a service animal.

Places to go for Thanksgiving question

Hi everyone, I hope y’all are well. I’m a relatively new San Franciscan in my early twenties and, for a couple of reasons, I will be on my own for Thanksgiving this year. Does anyone know of any community Thanksgiving events happening the day of the holiday, with extra gratitude if they’re in Nob Hill or the Castro? I’m gay, if that matters.

Thank you in advance for reading this 🫶

Some guy tried to break into my Waymo while I was in it

So I was coming home from a Halloween party at around 12:30am on Sunday. I was stopped at a red light on Market Street and this guy walks up to my Waymo and started trying to break into the front passenger side door. As you can hear in the video I was yelling at him and he pulled something out which looked like a knife and then walks away. I’m not sure it was a knife. Maybe it was a tool to break car windows, I don’t know. Once the light turned green the Waymo drove me home like usual. After the shock wore off I did call their support line and let them know what happened.

The scariest part was that I felt a bit helpless without a driver that could have just floored the gas to get us out of the situation.

I want to add the following:

Waymo was very supportive. They emailed me before I even woke up asking how I was. And I got a call from a supervisor a few hours later, again asking me how I was doing. Apparently, what I should have done was press the emergency button which I guess I had never noticed before so they could have called the police.

I did file a police report. I don’t expect much to happen. Waymo also said they opened an investigation.

I still think Waymo is great and definitely will continue using their service.

Yes, I was blasting Rufus Du Sol at 100% volume while this all went down lol

Election ballots

We filled out our ballots like good citizens and put them in the envelopes. The envelopes are sealed already. My husband realized with his ballot that we are supposed to rip off the strips on the ballot before you put them in the envelope. My MIL, SIL, and I didn’t do that. I don’t think we can open the envelopes once it’s been sealed. Do you think it will be a a problem that we didn’t rip off those strips?
