Independent SF - Foushee

Long time resident and big Independent fan, going back to Justice League days … I think i just saw one of the worst shows in this venue… she lip synced pretty much the entire show, she had background vocals that didn’t exist, instruments that didn’t exist and at times she even overlapped with her own vocals in the recording… sad night at the Independent SF.

Good gift for a newborn/mother?

I'm heading home out of state and I'd really like to bring some gifts from the Bay for my friend and her newborn daughter. Any suggestions would be really helpful!

Loud banging in Castro at 10pm

What's up with the loud banging in the Castro at 10pm? It kinda sounds like thunder or a truck dropping its load.

UC Blue and Gold vs Kaiser HMO Health Insurance

Which one is preferred for someone working for the UC System and lives in SF, considering equal distance to both and having medi-cal pcp at Kaiser previously? Been in Kaiser whole life and hard to get specialist/referrals from PCP if needed...Thanks!

Legal Advice Needed: Assault & Battery by Teens at 7-Eleven – U Visa Process and Work Authorization

Hello Reddit, I was recently assaulted and battered by four teenagers at a 7-Eleven, resulting in a severe concussion. Police showed up but teenagers flew and I have few witnesses, camera recordings and I went to emergency where doctors diagnosed with severe concussion and also assault markings over my face. I'm an immigrant, and I'm wondering about my legal options, specifically regarding the U Visa and the potential for work authorization in the United States.

U Visa Eligibility: Given that I was a victim of a violent crime, am I eligible for a U Visa? I understand this visa is for victims of qualifying crimes who assist law enforcement in the investigation or prosecution of those crimes. Could anyone explain how the process works and what documentation I would need to provide? Timeline for Work Authorization: If I am granted a U Visa, how long can I expect it to take before I receive work authorization? I am in urgent need of employment, and I would like to understand the expected timeframe for the process. Any advice or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Vent: People's perception of SF

Just got back from Las Vegas from Thanksgiving and we did the usual, gamble, take in a few shows, etc. One of the show we went to was the U2UV at the Sphere. I was wearing my Giants hat when a lady sitting next to us started a conversation. She claimed she's from Los Gatos and when she saw my hat, asked if we were from there. I said yes, and she immediately started...

"What's is so wrong with San Francisco? It used to be very beautiful but now, we can't even go there. In fact, I refuse to go there with my family! Too many car break-ins, too many druggies on the street, seriously, what happened?" Mind you, this continued for a good 10-15 minutes prior to the show.

I sat there, smiling a little and was just nodding my head (I didn't want to encourage her more) and before I can retort what I felt, the show started.

That episode got me thinking about what other's think about the City when most, if not majority of them, actually have not stepped foot in San Francisco lately. I've lived in the area for most of my life, grew up in the Mission district in my younger years, worked in downtown for more than 30 years, and have seen the ups and down the City went through within that span.

I don't know why I'm posting this, I guess just to vent but I just hate how outsiders view this place we call home with such distaste when to me, this is city life. Yes, it's not perfect but it is home.

EDIT: not sure why "CRIME" is the tag for this post.

There's a man on Larkin and Washington trying doors, gates, and call boxes. Called cops an hour ago and they're not showing up

SFPD sucks and refuses to go after violent offenders. How about instead of arresting the guys selling stuff on Mission st, WHY NOT ARREST THE THIEVES WHO ARE ACTUALLY IN THE PROCESS OF STEALING STUFF.

Absolute terrible response from SFPD. They're the politest police in the nation, to the point of not wanting to arrest legit criminals.

Edit: I meant to write non-violent, but it auto corrected. Then he approached me on the corner with some kind of metalic object and only turned around when he saw I had big dogs with me (he couldn't see the behind the car). So I'll just leave it.

Update 1: I passed back by, and he's sitting with some now empty Amazon and other packages and someone's delivery food. He's 100% stealing shit and the police could have stopped it, but they refuse to follow up on anything.

Update 2: wtf is wrong with the people saying that "attempting to open doors isn't a crime"? Do the people saying that have some kind of memory problem or cognitive deficiency that prevents you from understanding that stealing is a big problem in SF and that it is entirely obvious that's what this dude was trying to do? How are you defending the act of trying to get into other people's private property?

Update 3: friends building manager said they'd call the cops too, and they have evidence on camera. I assume they called already and the cops still haven't showed up or called us back (dispatch asked for callback numbers). SFPD please arrest the thieves stealing shit and destroying property instead of the random people on Mission Street who are selling stuff without a permit. There is definitely some overlap of the two, but Jesus Christ stop only going for the lowest hanging fruit!!!

Input on a proposal for SF commuters (but this will also be repeated because of Saturday)

Hi, I know the traffic will be low because I am posting on a Saturday night.

But, well, I got this done and it's been on my mind about commutes, traffic, SFMTA's budget, a counter-narrative to the rise of Waymo and Uber, and a ton of other stuff on my mind.

I am approaching my proposal for a crowd-sourced transit from a couple of different perspectives, but to me, one of the most important is what is appealing to riders.

Things that would be helpful:

  1. What are real pains or concerns for existing commuters?
  2. What are challenges to current way?
  3. What would "good" and "great" look like?

My gut says that in the end the best way will be to work with the largest employers and help their employees first, but I do like the idea of grass-roots input.

Where do you get local news in SF?

I have been disillusioned with the Chronicle's capture by radical viewpoints and constant shilling for regressive politicians. SF Standard has embarrassed themselves beyond degree with this outrageous piece knowingly buying stolen goods for Black Friday deals. Mission Local and 48 Hills have the same issues as the Chronicle but are even more extreme.

Why does it feel like a gigantic vacuum here? At this point the best sources appear to be this subreddit and random accounts on twitter or instagram. What else do you use?

Row of lights in sky tonight at around 5:45pm?

I saw a row of about 20 objects over Ocean Beach in SF around 5:45pm tonight. Seemed to be moving at a satellite's speed, and there does appear to have been a Starlink launch today. There was no point of reference to determine altitude. Can anyone confirm that this was likely what I saw?

Open-Mic venue

Hi all, I’m starting a free open-mic with an emphasis on spoken word poetry, but musical guests and comedy acts are welcome. Right now I’m in talks to host it every week in the theater behind city hall, but I’d prefer a bar so people can have drinks. I recently came back from Paris where I attended spoken word in a cabaret frequently, but it seems like SF has no such scene. The poetry that happens here, happens once per month. Any bars/bar owners that might be interested? I was born and raised in San Jose so I’m not familiar with the spots here in the city. Did I mention this would be free? Thanks for reading

Any fun kids’ math clubs in SF?

My 5 year old (Kindergarten) son has been showing really surprising aptitude and excitement for math in and out of his public school experience.

I dont know where he gets it, since I have zero talent with numbers of any kind. I guess his Kindergarten teacher has been pretty great. From what I understand he’s at least a level or two ahead of the class.

But I feel like this may be a brief window I need to be taking advantage of, in which he’s actually excited about something he could be good at, and I dont want to miss encouraging him with extra fun there.

I dont think he’d be able to handle a tutor, as he has pretty wild ADHD and can’t just focus one a piece of paper with one person. But maybe a club or something similar?

TLDR: Has anyone found any great extra-curricular resources for little kids who are showing potential with math and numbers in SF?

What next step to take.

How do I move to the next step in life? I want to help people, keep them fed and sheltered, happy and engaged in society, but I don’t have the means myself. Where and with whom do I sign up?

Me and my partner are looking for couples friends 🤘🏾

As the post says, we’ll be moving to the Bay Area in a couple of months, but we’re always there and are looking to meet other couples friends who are into punk/alternative culture, anime, and similar interests. We love thrifting and trying out new things! We are looking to develop long term friendships!
