    Daily-ish Giants-Focused AFL Quick-Notes 11/6/24

Scottsdale had a big win after a doubleheader split on Tuesday, staving off elimination from the playoffs.  Scottsdale’s elimination number is just one, as they sit at 11-14 and in 5th place in the 6-team league.  Scottsdale will need to win all five of their games remaining, plus get some help, to make the playoffs.  Meanwhile, the AFL Fall Stars showcase game will be on Saturday.  Full rosters have not been announced, but it’s unclear whether any Giants will be on the roster, although pitcher Cale Lansville is the likeliest to make it.

AFL: Scottsdale Scorpions 8, Peoria Javelina 1

    Giants Prospects to Spotlight:

    • RF Bo Davidson: Stats - As the only Giant playing in this Scottsdale blowout, Davidson had just a solid game, with another hit, giving him a 6-game hitting streak now.  He’s 13-for-48 now, up to a .271 batting average with eight walks to 17 strikeouts.

    Other Scottsdale Top Prospect Lines:

    • CF Jett Williams (NYM, #52 Overall): 0-4, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 SB (6)
    • DH Josue Briceño (DET, #9 Team): 1-5, 1 R,1  RBI, 2 K
    • C Thayron Liranzo (DET, #6 Team): 0-3, 1 R, 1 BB
    • 3B Eddinson Paulino (TOR, #18 Team): 0-4, 1 K, 1 E (5)

    Top Peoria Prospect Lines:

    • SS Leodalis De Vries (SD, #28 Overall): 0-4, 2 K, 1 E (6)
    • C Ethan Salas (SD, #19 Overall): 0-4, 1 K, 1 E (2)
    • 3B Brock Wilken (MIL, #7 Team): 0-4, 2 K, 1 E (3)

Poll: How much more would the Giants have to spend on top of an offer to land Soto?

    From Baggarly’s new article

The Giants’ most visible recent offseason failures have been their efforts to sign a free-agent franchise star. This winter, they have roughly $70 million to spend before crossing the $241 million luxury tax threshold. They are likely to target one or two major free agents as opposed to filling out the roster with six or seven.

Juan Soto is the biggest prize but Willy Adames is a better match for Posey’s expressed top priority: a shortstop who could stabilize the infield and allow Tyler Fitzgerald to move to second base. Both Soto and Adames will have qualifying offers attached to them, though, and it’s very possible that the Giants will seek to avoid signing players associated with draft penalties.

For one, their system took a hit in this past draft when they sacrificed their second and third picks plus $1 million from their international bonus pool to sign Matt Chapman and Blake Snell. For another, because the Giants also surged past the luxury tax threshold last season, the draft penalties are even steeper this time around. This winter, signing a free agent with a QO would cost them their second and fifth picks plus $1 million from their international bonus pool. Signing two such free agents would cost them their second, third, fifth and sixth picks.

    Visiting your Campgrounds

Yo, I just moved to NorCal right before the whole Covid thing went down. I haven't been to a Giants game yet, but I'm planning to go next season. I'm thinking about sitting in the visitors' section. Do you think the Giants fans will be cool with me repping my Cubbies gear? Haha. I've always loved San Francisco, and I can't wait to finally experience a game at Oracle Park. I hear the crab sandwich is a must-try. What else should I look out for while I'm there? Hey, maybe I'll just become a fan of both teams. What do you think?

    Daily Minors Quick-Notes 11/5/24 - A Scottsdale Doubleheader!

After getting rained out on Sunday, the AFL did a rare doubleheader and so we got some extra time for the Scottsdale Scorpions.  While it didn’t end up getting a lot of Giants prospects time, it did get another strong pitching outing for Cale Lansville as his successful fall continues.  And the Scorpions nearly got a much-needed sweep, but a grand slam for Glendale made it a split.

Game 1: Glendale Desert Dogs 5, Scottsdale Scorpions 3 (7 Innings)

    Giants Prospects to Spotlight:

    • LF-CF Bo Davidson: 1-3, 1 K - Not much to talk about in this short game, but Davidson picked up another hit, inching his numbers up with another hit.  He’s now 12-for-44 (.273) although still with just three doubles as his only extra-base hits.
    • PH-DH Charlie Szykowny: 0-4 - Not great for Szykowny, who came in after the game continued and was in for a long day.  Stats in the next game recap.
    • RP Marques Johnson: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, 1 HBP - A quiet inning for Johnson, as he lowered his ERA after six games to 7.20 through 5.0 innings, with six hits allowed, and six walks to nine strikeouts.

    Other Scottsdale Top Prospect Lines:

    • 2B Eddinson Paulino (TOR, #18 Team): 1-3
    • SS Jett Williams (NYM, #52 Overall): 0-2, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 SF
    • DH Josue Briceño (DET, #9 Team): 0-0
    • C Thayron Liranzo (DET, #6 Team): 0-0
    • CF-RF: Drew Gilbert (NYM, #74 Overall): 1-3, 1 K
    • 3B Jacob Reimer (NYM, #20 Team): 0-2, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 E (5)
    • SP Khristian Curtis (PIT, #27 Team): 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
    • RP Kendry Rojas (TOR, #12 Team): 3.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 HR

    Top Glendale Prospect Lines:

    • 2B Thomas Saggese (STL, #4 Team): 1-3, 1 R, 1 2B (6), 1 BB, 1 K
    • DH Zyhir Hope (LAD, #11 Team): 1-2, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 HBP
    • 1B Otto Kemp (PHI, #28 Team): 1-4, 1 R, 4 RBI, 1 HR (6)
    • RF Gabriel Rincones (PHI, #11 Team): 0-3
    • PH-C Leonardo Bernal (STL, #9 Team): 0-3
    • SS Bryan Rincon (PHI, #10 Team): 0-3
    • RP Christian McGowan (PHI, #22 Team): 5.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K

Game 2: Scottsdale Scorpions 6, Glendale Desert Dogs 0 (7 Innings)

    Giants Prospects to Spotlight:

    • 3B Charlie Szykowny: 0-4, 1 K - Yep, that’s an 0-for-8 for Szykowny today in the doubleheader.  That drops him to 12-for-49 (.245) after 12 games played.
    • C Drew Cavanaugh: 1-2, 1 R, 1 2B (2), 1 BB, 1 K - With a double, Drew Cavanaugh now has two in eight games played, and is now 6-for-26 (.231), but his four walks to nine strikeouts mean he has a .333 OBP.  Cavanaugh was pinch-ran for in the final seventh inning, but that appears to be to get some speed for a then-close game, not due to an injury.
    • SP Cale Lansville: 2.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K - Another start for Cale Lansville, and he put up another good game, with two scoreless innings lowering his ERA to 2.92 through 12.1 innings, although he has allowed 17 hits and five walks to 16 strikeouts.

    Other Scottsdale Top Prospect Lines:

    • RF Drew Gilbert (NYM, #74 Overall): 0-4, 1 R, 1 K, 1 SB (1)
    • 1B Josue Briceño (DET, #9 Team): 1-3, 1 R, 3 RBI, 1 HR (8), 1 BB, 1 K, 1 E (2)
    • DH Thayron Liranzo (DET, #6 Team): 0-1, 3 BB
    • LF Jacob Reimer (NYM, #20 Team): 0-4
    • 2B Eddinson Paulino (TOR, #18 Team): 1-3, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 K

    Top Glendale Prospect Lines:

    • SS Edwin Arroyo, (CIN, #65 Overall): 0-3, 1 BB, 1 K
    • DH Thomas Saggese (STL, #4 Team): 1-3, 1 K, 1 CS (4)
    • CF Zyhir Hope (LAD, #11 Team): 1-2, 1 BB, 1 SB (1)
    • 1B Otto Kemp (PHI, #28 Team): 1-3, 1 2B (2)
    • SP Andrew Painter (PHI, #32 Overall): 3.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K

Excluding Juan Soto, if you could pick one free agent to sign a long term deal with the Giants this off season, who would it be and why?

Does not just have to be the guys pictured here

If you told me Giants would have a season with a home grown Gold Glove catcher, a home grown All-Star outfielder and a hitting prospect tearing up minors (and Farhan/Viele gone) I'd say things are looking pretty good for the Giants

Daily Minors Quick-Notes 11/4/24 - Rain Interrupts Scottsdale Winning Streak

Welcome back!  After Sunday’s game was “suspended” by rainy weather, the Scorpions were back at it on Monday, but saw their 4-game winning streak come to an end in a tightly fought battle.  But Bo Davidson continues his strong run after a mid-fall slump, and Will Kempner continues his late-season return to action with his best outing yet.

    Giants Prospects to Spotlight:

    • LF Bo Davidson: 1-2, 2 BB, 1 K - Bo Davidson had another solid game as he’s been on a good run, having his first multi-walk game and getting on base three times in four plate appearances.  He’s now 11-for-41 (.268) and now has eight walks to 14 strikeouts in 14 games played.
    • RP William Kempner: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K - Kempner got into his third game this fall, and had his first inning without allowing a baserunner.  In 3.0 innings, he’s allowed two earned runs on a walk and a hit allowed, but with five strikeouts.

    Other Scottsdale Top Prospect Lines:

    • SS Jett Williams (NYM, #52 Overall): 1-3, 2 BB, 2 K, 1 SB (5)

    • CF Andrew Pintar (MIA, #18 Team): 0-4, 2 K
    • C Ethan Salas (SD, #19 Overall): 1-4, 1 R, 1 K, 1 SB (4)

I mean technically you could say the World Series goes through San Francisco every year—at least in the offseason.

    Barry Bonds Post 2007

    Hi, I’m a Nats fan.

I’ve always been curious about no one signing Bonds after the 2007 season. The fact he had a .480 OBP and went unsigned blows my mind.

Of course there was the negative PR, he was aloof in the clubhouse and becoming more of a liability in LF.

How did Giants fans at the time feel about him being resigned? was there a strong consensus one way or the other?

Giants listed as a potential suitor for Juan’s Soto. How exciting! Uhh….na.

They need to stop calling the giants suitors and start calling them salary bait. A’s have a better chance of signing him. Wash. Rinse. Repeat.
