Show Summary:
Shawn Spencer has developed a keen eye for detail after being instructed by his police officer father to note even the most minute details of his surroundings. After conning the police into believing that he's a psychic, Shawn opens a detective agency with best friend Burton Guster.

I always interpreted it like he lied to her so it wouldn’t be awkward. She said she didn’t take any stock in the questions and then he says he copied he answers. But it’s also in character for him to copy the answers to get a rise out of her. But in that case, I think he would have continued with the bit and played it up even more.
Thoughts?
Today I ask you... Who are the people in the real world who most closely reflects the humor of the characters
(Mainly Shawn, as the one who tries the most to make people laugh... But I'd be curious about others too)
I’m rewatching for the millionth time and had the world’s Most Useless Revelation™ that they use the word “accoutrements” in back-to-back episodes -Shawn in S3E01 “Ghosts” discussing ascots (which is the only one ppl usually bring up), but also -Juliet in the episode before, S2E16 Shawn (and Gus) of the Dead, discussing a celebration for chief Vick’s promotion
lol It was a throwaway line in S2 but then a big comedic moment in S3. Anyways this is a dumb post I know but it’s funny the more I rewatch the more I realize they do this thing a lot where something from a recently (if not immediately) prior episode is somehow referenced, unintentionally (I think). I have no real point to this except wow I binge this show a lot.
She races to prove Thane's innocence just so she can beat Shawn to the punch, preventing him from getting $10,000. Now don't get me wrong, Shawn did totally flaunt the case in her face. And while I can see her being petty back, I don't see her doing it so far as to stop Shawn from getting $10,000. Especially because they're dating at this point in the series.
Just 'cause you put syrup on something don't make it pancakes
I just finished my first complete watch through of Psych. In my teens, I watched quite a few episodes while the show was still running in the early 2010s but never the full series. It's a cozy adventure that has been a source of comfort as I've grappled with depression. I shed some tears as the last episode was wrapping up and have been dwelling on the bittersweet melancholy that I feel whenever I finish a series, movie, book, or game that I really liked.
I think the single most enjoyable part of Psych for me is the relationship between Shawn and Gus. It's interesting how as a viewer we can suspend our disbelief, look past the illusion, and get wrapped up in the lives of characters. Certainly there can be a weird parasocial relationship that develops, but at the same time I think a story can be a balm for wounds and the dreariness of life at times.
I'm not a super fan, but I do want to share some of my thoughts on the series and the writing. I think the first five seasons of Psych are the strongest. Around episode 7 of the first season I felt like the crew and cast had coalesced into something really special—they had begun finding their groove. It's that golden era that's most likely difficult to sustain due to churn, growth and/or situational changes of cast/crew, and the complexity of making a show (just guessing here because I really don't have a solid understanding of all that's involved making a series).
By season 6, I felt like the series became far more cartoonish. The minimal character growth seen in prior seasons became even less present. There are some great episodes in later seasons but I sorely missed not having more character development and deeper story lines. The few episodes that did involve pivotal moments and relational depth are among my favorite. It seemed like the series became more outlandish and the editing a little too quick paced in order to cover up certain weaknesses in the plot. I cringed as Shawn’s character pivoted toward more grandiosity and narcissism.
And that’s one of my least favorite parts of Psych: the portrayal of narcissistic behaviors. The treatment of women is problematic too, in my honest opinion, with guest characters often being reduced to objects of the male gaze and subjects of conquest commentary. Sometimes it seems harmless enough, but there’s certain scenes that I don’t think hold up and can be quite creepy and disappointing when really evaluated. Also, there are times where it bothers me how Gus is treated and placed into the overall story. I do feel like his character gets to shine more in the final seasons which I really appreciated. Nevertheless, the things that I dislike are not enough to turn me away from all that I do like. It’s a really fun show that doesn’t take itself too seriously, and I’m seriously looking forward to another watch through.
Favorite episodes:
In Psych the Movie 3: This is Gus, Gus walks into Shawn's dad's house and says "Are you building a wooden woman? I tried searching it up, but I got nothing. Hoping my fellow detectives can help me out
Just a random thought of a sick person, but wouldn’t it have been funny? I could see Shawn tormenting him by pronouncing his name “seen”. Not as a regular character but maybe a one off or perhaps as the killer for an episode. Maybe he could’ve had a sidekick named Gustov that they’d call Evil Gus.
I feel like crap right now and I’m unfortunately still at work, but thinking about Psych is helping me pass the time. Thank God for comfort shows.
Do you have an ideas for episodes or characters?
I would've like found out what happend to Robert Baker from the episode "Dual Spires", if Lassie deciced to arrest him or let him go.
Was rewatching Criminal Minds E6 S1 & realized it’s Carlton in that episode if anyone wants a suggestion I highly recommend the show
Su. Pine.
Does anyone use Shawn's conversational quirks, not necessarily direct quotes, but saying things like 'I feel pale' or using made up word with credit to made up languages? I find it gets people more involved in conversation some times...maybe even excited too
In the episode with the thornburg virus, when shawn is going to tell juliet about how he feels, why did gus go and interrupt shawn? Then he says “i guess you have more time than you think”
The Jamaican Inspector Man wouldn't be too happy to hear this, but it's actually okay because Santa Barbara is the murder capital of the wooooorld
Rewatching this ep now and just realized Gus’ mom is the mom on the Cosby show (Phylicia Rashad) and the dad’s name is Bill.
Gus and Bud’s parents 🤯
Do you think they did it on purpose?
And starring a young Mr. Dulé Hill.
The City Kids Foundation was created in 1985 to help inner city kids learn ways to express themselves through the arts. The TV show was written and produced "for kids, with the help of the kids." Sketches involving the Henson Co puppets were interspersed with the live action storyline, acting as the Greek chorus (often commenting on but never interacting with the human characters) It ran for just 13 episodes from 1993-94
citykids.com still has all but the pilot episode to stream
It’s one of the episodes in which, at some point, Shawn is held captive. Of course he keeps his snarkiness, and at one point the captor (or one of them) yells “do you ever shut up?” And more snarkiness lol. I can’t think of it, and I just rewatched A Shot in the Dark, and it’s not there.
Edit: thanks everybody!! Now it’s time to go rewatch it. Lol 😝
Ok Psych-Os - I remember a scene where we find out Shawn’s dad is the landlord for the office and he’s turned the office into a cat cafe… I feel like it was one of the movies… was it the second movie? I can’t remember! 🍍
I nearly peed myself
guys, my friend and i have always wondered this- what do y’all think.
in the episode where they go to the school for smart kids, shawn is reading everyone in the class and he says “you wear that jacket every day to school, should i tell the class why?”
he zooms in and it shows little particles on the student. maybe he means ❄️? but i’ve never been sure. i’d like to know what you guys can glean from this
I do not think Abs got her fair shake. I love in the opening of this episode how she joins Shawn in figuring out exactly how to best taunt Lassie.
Of all of the love interests for Shawn in the series, besides Jules, she is my favorite.
