Mazda Service Recommendations

Other than Mazda dealerships, does anyone have any recommendations for shops that service Mazdas preferably in the West end. Now I guess in theory any shop can service a Mazda but is there one that specializes in them or has a lot of experience with them.

Hi All! It's my birthday this Friday and Im wondering where is some good places to buy a cake. Not looking for a custom one obviously but just somewhere I can buy a fresh made cake (if there is any) Im not looking for anything crazy, just like a vanilla cake with some good buttercream! I haven't lived here long enough yet to have frequented myself with any local bakeries so any suggestions will be helpful! Thanks!

WTH is Going on at SmartCentres Orléans - Rock Slab Islands in Parking Lot

I went to Best Buy this weekend and noticed that in the parking area near Best Buy and Dollarama at SmartCentres Orléans on Innes and Mer Bleue, some nitwit put a huge rock slab in each of the tiny parking lot islands, several of which are extremely dangerous to cars.

There are a couple that have sharp protruding outside than the edge of the island and many of the rest sit right on the edge. If you know anything about physics and how a car functions (the upper car is physically wider than the wheelbase, especially on turns) then you know this is bad news for you and your insurance rates.

Sure enough, while I was waiting (probably 40 minutes to an hour) to be served and then wait in the Consumer's Distributing line for 2 open cashes, a guy scratched up his van on one of these "rock slab islands" and was cursing and swearing, while taking pictures on his phone.

I did my civic duty and contacted the management firm for SmartCentres Orléans about this issue and was essentially told to "f*ck off" (in nicer terms) and I'm wondering if there is any city bylaw that is being broken by creating such a dangerous parking lot for cars? Sure, it's private property, but if I put a bear trap in my back yard and a perp steps in it, I've broken laws and will be held liable.

If you haven't seen the "new rock slab island" design, then go check it out, as I counted 2 or 3 with seriously protruding edges that are guaranteed to cause damage if you get too close, and most of the others were near at at the edges.

It's almost like they're trying to keep people from driving on or near the parking lot islands, but that's a serious f'd up way to do it. I know I won't be back there until they're removed, as it's not worth a $5K-$10K repair job, as prices have absolutely gone insane, as have insurance penalties.

And with all the meatheads in Orleans trying to hit other drivers and just the insane traffic density here, I don't need any other hazards to worry about when shopping.

Do people still do these? Bank + Walkley Value Village today at lunch. I would have spoken to you but I was with my mom as I am sure you noticed. Sorry I took all the vests from the men’s section.. I have a Peaky Blinders themed Christmas party … I don’t need them all, you can have one and a drink on me?

Ladies, Gentlemen and those somewhere in between, may the snow plow gods in your corner tomorrow

Remember to be nice to those working to clear streets, sidewalks and driveways, it’s going to be a rough first one of the year. Even try to be nice to the OC transpo drivers and tow truck operators.

Dentist consultation?

Hello all! Do your dentists make you come in for separate consultations to fix cavities etc?

Case in point:

I have 3 kids, each kid was found to have a cavity. Oops. But instead of making an appointment after the cleaning to fix it, we had to come in a month later for a consultation to tell me what they’re going to do, THEN we have to make an appointment to actually fix it, usually another month later.

Meanwhile, they try but can’t always get the kids to have appointments on the same day.. so in the last 3 months- the total dentist appointments they’ve had (haven’t even fixed the actual cavities yet), is 6 appointments! I’m going to run out of sick days!

Is this normal??! My dentist just fixes the cavity at the next appointment instead of having a separate consultation but maybe it’s different for kids? We went to this dentist because they work a lot with kids who have special needs etc and it was recommended to me when my oldest was really young and struggling… but pretty sure he’s be fine now with a regular dentist…

Line of evenly spaced objects in the night sky!?

Did anyone else look up in the western sky at around 5:45pm and notice a string of about 20-30 evenly spaced white objects/lights moving in an easterly direction? They were perfectly spaced and moving about the speed of passenger aircraft. Do satellites do that?

Convoy organizer Steeve Charland found guilty of mischief

Another Clownvoy criminal.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/ottawa-steeve-charland-guilty-mischief-convoy-1.7400030

As the article says, this Clonwvoy guy who occupied Ottawa and area is affiliated with a "far-right, anti-Islam and anti-immigration group".

The article doesn't mention the fact that Pierre Poilievre and the CPC welcomed and fully supported the Clownvoy.

Another Internet Provider Question

Our (wife and I) promo with Bell for home internet is coming to an end next week and is going from $85 to $115 for their Fibe 1.5. I've called twice now and they won't continue our promo so I don't think we will be able to renegotiate with them, which sucks because last year we got a Internet+Phone deal for our phone plan and would like to keep all our bills together. I did feel like we were getting a good deal and we are in search of something similar. We found these providers and their plans' so far:

Teksavvy - $100 for 1.5 gbps with their new fibre option

Acanac - $70 for 1000 mbps with 750 mbps upload speed

Oxio - $85 for 1000 mbps with 50 mbps (why is this so slow?)

Primus - $70 for 1000 mbps with 750 mbps upload speed

I would PREFER to have a higher internet speed because I WFH and have multiple devices connected. Does anyone have experience with these providers and how much are you guys paying for your internet?

Weekly Thursday Board Game Meetup at Level One

Welcome to our weekly board game meetup at Level One 🙂. Level One is a board game lounge where we like to come hangout, have fun, and meet new people. Everyone is welcome!

Where is it? Level One Game Pub, 14 Waller Street, Downtown Ottawa

When is it? Every Thursday at 6pm. Ask for the Reddit group upon arrival. Generally we take up the back half of the upper level. ^(Note: Please try to arrive at 6pm, coming later means there may not be space for you to join a game as the tables may already be full!)

How much do I have to pay? There is a $9 "stay & play" fee, plus any food or drink you purchase.

What games? Some games people commonly play are: Night of the Ninja, Codenames, Secret Hitler, Avalon, Just One, Wavelength, and Coup, but we also love mixing it up and playing other games 🙂. We usually play light strategy games, party games, and social deduction, but we also tend to have a table or two for heavier long strategy games.

FAQs:

How many people usually show up?

~35 people. Generally we have two 8-10 seat tables and four 4-6 seat tables.

How late does everyone stay?

10pm is usually when people start heading out, but feel free to head out whenever you wish. Some people stay until closing.

What’s the age range of the crowd? Will I fit in?

Most of us are in our 20s and 30s, but all ages are definitely welcome! Our group is commonly described as welcoming, fun, good vibes, and relaxed.

Do I need to know how to play these games beforehand?

Nope! The games are for fun, not competition, feel free to learn from us or staff once you arrive. No pressure to know anything!

Do I need to RSVP that I will be coming? Do I need to go every week?

Nope, you just show up! If you are nervous about simply showing up, you can contact me and I can make arrangements to save you a seat for your first night. We host these meetups weekly, feel free to show up whenever works for you, as often as you would like. I highly recommend pushing yourself to go to your first one though!

If you have any questions do not hesitate to comment or message 🙂

^(It is a great place to meet future friends!) 😁

Anyone know where to get (meat based) baby food without garlic and onion?

Looking for meat based baby food without garlic and onion.
Online searches show Heinz by nature but I cannot find it in Ottawa. Same with Beech-Nut (Beef + Broth).

It is for a pet hence the no garlic & onion.
thanks

Best Gym for Hyrox Training?

About to move back to Ottawa and looking for a new gym. Will be moving out to Findlay Creek so closer is better, but willing to travel for the right equipment.

Currently in the middle of a 12 week Hyrox training program which requires equipment like turf, kettlebells, skierg, row machine, assault bikes, treadmills etc. Preferably, in reasonable proximity to each other as most of the workouts are circuit based. Any recommendations for best gyms in Ottawa that have all the necessary equipment?

Membership price is not an issue.

NOTICE: William Commada bridge closing tonight for the season.

I saw some city workers on the Ottawa side as I biked home today. They informed me the bridge was closing tonight unfortunately. Here is your notice - as the ottawa city website has not been updated yet. Obviously there is snow in the forecast but a little advance notice would be nice for people that use the bridge everyday.

I asked whether there was any chance the bridge would open this winter and mentioned that Alexandria bridge has a wooden crosswalk, so why the difference. The answer was no, and that William Commanda is a completely different structure. I wish the City of Ottawa provided more detailed information publicly explaining the rationale for the winter closure. It just seems arbitrary. If part of the reason is maintenance cost and liability for injury, just be forthcoming and transparent. Otherwise users like me become frustrated.

The alternative route from the west is Champlain Bridge which is sketchy for biking because of high speed and lack of separated lanes. People often drive into the bike lanes based on my experience. Also, the use of road salt on the bridge is excessive which obviously isn't great for bikes.

The other alternative is the bridge near the war museum. On the other side of that bridge we have Chaudiere Island where a new construction project in ongoing with additional unclear detours and then bikers need to take a bike lane on Eddy Street, again without any separation from car traffic.

All this to say - William Commanda Bridge is a vital cross river connection for people who choose active transportation. Even if there is snow and no mainetenance, bikers with the right snow biking setup should have no problem.

I will continue to commute by bike through the winter and prioritize pathways that are completely separated from auto traffic. Biking to work works for me - it is routine physical exercise and is actually faster than driving, and I don't need to pay for parking. I can actually avoid purchasing a second vehicle as well. And let's be honest, using public transit isn't a viable option. It would take me more than double the time on Public transit than biking, and this is based on the the unrealistic assumption that there wont be delays in multiple transfers between OC transpo busses, the LRT and the Gatineau bus system.

I would urge city councilors to reconsider closing William Commanda Bridge over the winter due to the lack of safe and viable alternatives for bike commuters crossing the Ottawa River.

Edit: below is a link to a blog posted earlier this month from Jeff Leiper that provides some great context on the bridge closure and hope for grooming pending the bureaucratic hurdles. Highly suggest reading and wish to extend thanks to Councilor Leiper for leadership here and to the redditor who pointed it out in the replies https://kitchissippiward.ca/2024/11/08/commanda-bridge-closure/
