Rum Balls

Anyone know of any Ottawa bake shops that sell rum balls. Used to get some this time of year at Swiss Pastries. Really miss that place and especially their Black Forest Cake.

Where Can I Buy Salt Cured Pork?

Ive checked with a few butchers, but nobody sells it. I was able to purchase salt cured pork at Fortinos in the GTA, but I haven’t seen it here anywhere. Does anyone know where you can buy it?

Thanks in advance!

Authentic and good Panettone

Hi everyone. I have always heard of good things and how special Panettone is. I haven't actually tried it and was wondering if you know of any place in Ottawa I can possibly get good ones? I heard it's popular during this season.

Thank you!

Best British Fruitcake

I'm looking for a proper, rich, rum soaked fruitcake, either locally or delivered in Canada.

Something like Mary Berry's fruitcake.
https://git.macropus.org/bbc-food/www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/celebration_cake_61952.html?fbclid=IwY2xjawG1g3JleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHfwLVmFkViqfcANqvZc0Irqhf1A5V16b-g2fXRALX8BzYfrwqao6Ol2C4A_aem_eD7bbKAfV37awGRNyjlaCQ

I'm looking at the ingredients list and it adds up, wondering if it's cheaper just to buy.

Any recommendations. NOT looking for Stollen, which I get at Stubbe, and is awesome.

Seeking a dark rich fruitcake.

Pad Gaprao

Hi folks - when visiting Thailand, I fell in love with a dish named Pad Gaprao, which is a minced, stir fried protein (typically pork) with holy basil on rice, topped with a crispy fried egg. It's fantastic.

There are a couple Ottawa Thai restaurants that do a really nice job with this (Chopp Chop in Orleans, which calls it Basil Stir-Fried with Fried Egg, and Khao Thai in the market, which calls it 'Bangkok Street Food'), but most other Thai places in the city seem to serve Pad Bai Gaprao, in which the meat is not minced and there is no egg.

Are there other restaurants that serve the minced version of the dish? I know I can get holy basil from Lim Bangkok and make it myself but I find if I don't use the ingredients within a day or two they become moldy.

Thanks in advance!

Northern Spy apples - where can they be found?

Anybody seen these for sale anywhere recently? A bag of ‘em would make my friend’s day. West of Centretown preferred, but I’ll go out of my way if I have to.

Allergy Friendly/Special Diet Comfort Food - Gauging Interest

This may be a shot in the dark, but I am a former chef and I would like to see if there would be any interest in some products I've been developing. I am missing some pretty key numbers in my maths as I try to determine if I should start a small freezer food business or some kind of meal plan.

In 2015 it came to my attention that I was allergic to a lot of the food I was eating, namely wheat and dairy. In the time since there have been a few staple favourites I found hard to come by, so over the years I've been coming up with my own recipes. I've had some breakthroughs of late with gluten free pastry and flavour enhancement with fermentation and my first thought was to see if anyone else was, like me, missing some of these old favourites.

So far I have in mind for the winter, recipes for

GF/DF Chicken Pot Pie/Seafood Pie (can also make vegan versions)

GF/Vegan Tarte Tatin (with shio koji caramel)

GF/Vegan Root Vegetable Gallete

GF/DF Beer Battered Fish

GF/Vegan Cornbread

GF/Vegan Koji Beet and Quinoa Burgers (they *almost* taste and look like real meat lol)

Major Allergen Free, Naturally Fermented Root and Ginger Beers

And many more things forthcoming such as Vegan Cheeses, Specialty Misos, Tamaris, common ferments such as Krauts and Kimchis, and a wide assortment of pickles.

In a perfect world I make whatever I feel like, freeze it and sell it to some smaller stores in town, but if there's any food you particularly miss from before you became diet conscious, please comment and I'll see if I can come up with it. Should it be freezer foods? Should it be a meal subscription plan?

As I said, I would appreciate any feedback as I try to decide whether or not to bite the bullet, rent the kitchen, buy the packaging and labels, etc.

Thanks!

Cooking Oysters - any Ottawa suppliers?

Tried every Oysters Rockefeller in Ottawa, but none seem to come close to even my home made. All restaurants about serm to pass off a few small raw oysters. Need 3-4 inch long cooking oysters to do the recipes justice.

Specialty food for a Christmas gift

I want to fill a basket with speciality foods for my mom for Christmas. She loves to cook and doesn’t want more things, so I thought I would stick with consumables. I’m thinking fancy olive oils, jams, pasta. If you have any ideas about where I should shop, it would be greatly appreciated!

Where can I find classic homemade Christmas cookies in Ottawa?

I’m on the hunt for some old fashioned Xmas cookies — all butter shortbread, icebox cookies with candied cherries, chewy gingerbread, sugar cookies, linzer cookies etc.

I’m not into the decorative ones with hard icing.

Appreciate your suggestions!

Who's got the best fish & chips in Ottawa (restaurant or take-out)?

My wife and I have been on a quest for the best but although the fish is often sublime the fries leave much to be desired most of the time.

As a Brit friend of mine explained

"In Canada, the fries are too small for a proper F&C.They absorb too much oil for their size. In the UK the fries/chips are more like small wedges of potatoes. There's obviously some oil on the outside but still a good chunk of potato flesh that's just potato with very or no oil...

Road trip food

I’m about to go on a road trip starting today and I wanted a restaurant that I could just grab my order and go, hopefully that was slightly healthy (not fast food) but also something I could eat while driving, any ideas?

Good butcher shop and cheap

Hello everyone, I was wondering where can I find a good butcher shop, I’m tired paying so much money on meat at grocery store. I have a lot of friends that recommended to go to butcher shop because apparently you save a lot more money and a lot more fresh and clean. Please let me know I currently staying in Gatineau side but I’m willing to travel to try it out.

Any good traditional Chinese cuisine that isn’t super expensive?

I’ve tried a few places in Chinatown and Papa Spicy but they were very mid compared to the price... I am Chinese background and I’m searching for that authentic flavour, taking recommendations. I love spicy too.

Visiting Ottawa

Hi everyone and greetings from Vancouver. I’m visiting the nation’s capital later this year.

What’s a good poutine fix? Beaver tails? Donairs? Anything else that’s Canadian or uniquely Ottawan I should try?

My budget for food is low-mid range. I will splurge on a good cocktail though 😊

I long for traditional dim sum on carts - especially on a Sunday. Are there any left?

Duck breast

Does anyone know what grocery stores sell duck breast ? I’ve seen it the odd time at Metro but not consistently. I imagine more places will carry it for the holiday. Thanks in advance.
