How is hs_ed25519_public_key encoded? (+bonus questions)

Hello,

I've recently been exploring how the Onion protocol works within Tor.

I've successfully got the private key out of hs_ed25519_secret_key which is simple enough, but I want to now use that to create the associated hs_ed25519_public_key. So far, I've Base64 encoded "== ed25519v1-public: type0 ==" + 0x000000731a + private_key, and the first part of the output look correct until the hex area. I'm not sure what this mysterious hex value is, but all hs_ed25519_public_keys seem to have it.

This is the resulting (first part) of the public key: PT0gZWQyNTUxOXYxLXB1YmxpYzogdHlwZTAgPT0AAABzGo

With that all being said, what am I missing? What data needs encoded along with the private key to get hs_ed25519_public_key?

Bonus questions:

  1. What also goes into the hs_ed25519_secret_key? I've got the private key out but I'm unsure what the other contents are.

  2. I've checked the Tor specification and it states the Onion address is calculated with this:

    onion_address = base32(PUBKEY | CHECKSUM | VERSION) + ".onion" CHECKSUM = H(".onion checksum" | PUBKEY | VERSION)[:2]

What does the H function refer to here? This thread implies it may be SHA3, but then which SHA3? 256? 512? So on.

I've been having a hard time finding resources which explicitly state this stuff, therefore I'd greatly appreciate any help or referrals to resources.

Thanks :)

P.S. Sorry if my first question is too Tor-ish. I will be posting it on that subreddit too, but I figure I may also find help over here.

After one year without to check what is going on within Tor I wanted to check today...ok, almost nothing works like always since years with Tor.

My first attempt at making a social media website for tor

This is my (very first) attempt at making a social media website. Users can post simple messages and leave comments on those posts. It is FAR from any good because I am very inexperienced with CSS but if you would like to give it a try, the .onion is below.

I am not planning on making this an actual big platform. It just made it because I am trying to learn databases and stuff. Feel free to post some things on the page. It doesn't really matter what you post. I just think it is cool to see that other people have used your system.

The page should be up between 12pm and 12am GMT +1

If you find any problems or tips please let me know. I am very open for feedback

http://5s6duo4f7qnwhanpznewgnjnzxhihck6vldhearnj54w4dptnx7bipid.onion/

IMPORTANT: Please do not use your personal passwords with this website. Even though passwords get hashed before they enter the database, I still do not trust my database to be 100% hackers proof. ( Please don't hack my database )

What is the biggest L you’ve taken since you started using TOR?

From newbie to the DPR level users. What’s the biggest L you’ve taken online? Or what’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned? Be as brief of in-depth as you would like.

Help setting up PGP?

I’m super late to the party but I need to set up PGP (for the first time) so I can add my key to a site.

I know I’ll be roasted alive for asking this so, honestly, if you have the impulse to do that - I already know it’s reckless not to have it, please move along!

I’ve been using the DNMs since Silk Road 2 so for a long while but (yes, stupidly!) never with PGP.

I’ve gotten a bit less tech savvy in my old age so need to figure out how to do it on an iPhone, if anyone can help me with that! I’ve done a ton of Googling, but I just don’t know what I’m doing so would really appreciate if someone could just walk me through it like I’m 4 😅

self hosting matrix, vs xmpp vs irc over tor?

USE CASE

i want to chat with one or more people i know in real life over a private, secure, and anonymous instant messenger, it needs to have these features

1: private: no adversary including but not limited to the united states federal government can find out who is sending the message or who is receiving the message

2: secure: no adversary including but not limited to the united states federal government can read the message

3: anonymous: no adversary including but not limited to the united states federal government can find out where the message is sent from, or being sent to.

4: entirely self hosted, NOT relying on the services of a third party like the signal app

5: no federation: i want true and absolute decentralization, no registration with a central authority, i want to create a server that is completely separate from any and all networks, i want it to be part no network except the network that is the internet itself.

6: server is password secure, no one can join the server except those who i have given the password to.

7: i need to be able to run it over the tor network

8: it cannot store any data, once the server is shut down all text records are gone and can never be recovered.

9: the server can stay on for a discretionary amount of time, if i need the server to be on for 5 minutes? fine, if i need the server to be on for the rest of my natural life? fine.

with this specific use case in mind, i have been told that either matrix, xmpp, or irc is what i need to use, given this specific use case scenario, what would you say?

thank you

Why

I only come back to the onions once every few months when I get bored and feel like partying but lately every time I decide to get on, the links aren’t much usually only one or 2 market links on dark.fail and they don’t load. Is dark.fail obsolete or something? Where can I go for working, safe links????

Looking for an onion crawler site

I used to love using Deeplink a few years ago, it was a crawler site that listed every onion it found and even had a random button. It was really interesting to explore when I got bored. Sadly it doesn't work anymore. Are there any alternatives out there that still work?

Web development for onion sites

Does anyone have any guides, blogs or books on the subject of web development on tor?

Things like implementing basic user sign up and/or implementation of PGP encryption based on a user provided public key. Would development be as standard? I know that HTML/CSS/Javascript is used as normal, however, I am interested in the security considerations someone would make for an onion site.

Chances of FBI or other agency having an international seller listing on DNM

I was wondering if anyone is aware of this ever happening? For a LEA (law enforcement agency) having a seller listing on a market and posing as a seller abroad to catch individuals domestically in the US

How can I make a onetime donation to Onionshare?

I'm going through my list of annual donations to various open source projects (TOR being one obviously). I would also like to donate to Onionshare, however its donation page links to a monthly donation.

I don't want to donate in that way, I'd rather make a one time donation and do it annually as I see fit.

Is there just an option I'm not seeing on their donation page? What should I do if I really just want to make a one time donation?

Is there a Reddit equivalent social forum onion website without censorship?

I want to see the whole picture of a discussion, but Reddit [moderators] make it near impossible sometimes. For example, in a left leaning sub, right leaning comments or users would get banned and their comments deleted, so some of the actually interesting discussions stop half way because of this. It's the same for right leaning [moderators] when it comes to the freedom of speech of left leaning comments and users.

I understand if there's some censorship against let's say cp or stuff like that, but I really want to have access to a Reddit like social forum, where people can actually say whatever they want to say without fear of getting shut down. If it's something too out there, the responses under the post would do enough of a job I think when it comes to dissuading other people from adopting the same beliefs or whatever.

Anyways. Do you guys know of a social forum website, like Reddit, that's not this limited when it comes to moderation and censorship, so that I can freely browse and follow some of the more heated discussions there?
