Either an internal or external DVD reader or the possibility to boot from a USB stick/SD card.
Tails requires a 64-bit x86-64 compatible processor: IBM PC compatible and others but not PowerPC nor ARM. Mac computers are IBM PC compatible since 2006. Tails does not run on most tablets and phones.
2 GB of RAM to work smoothly. It is possible to run with less, but crashes, slowness, and strange behavior is possible.

I am a novice investigative journalist. I just started my job, but the thing is i never knew this job was this risky. So one of my good friends told e to use tails os for safety. But the things is i only have a Galaxy chromebook go. So i thought why not and gave it a shot.
First i installed tails img and verified it. Then i used dd command to install it to my usb drive. Also i found an article about how to use tails on a chromebook. So i followed it. These are the exact same steps i did.
1.Hold the Esc + refresh+ power to launch the recovery screen.
Press ctrl+D to turn on developer mode and press enter at the prompt, to reboot and configure dev mode, this may take some time so be patient.
Turn on the laptop as you normally do, however don’t log in or set up an account, rather select “Enable Debugging Features”, to set a root password of your choice, once done you will be back to the previous screen.
Once on the “login/setup” screen, press ctrl+alt+refresh to launch the developer terminal.
You will see a black terminal screen it’ll ask you to log in. Enter “root” at the “localhost login” prompt, and then use the root password you just set up at the “password” prompt. This should give you a prompt that looks like this:
localhost ~#
( my one Looked like this "sasuke-rev ~ #)
crossystem dev_boot_usb=1
crossystem dev_boot_legacy=1
(after entering "crossystem dev_boot_legacy=1" command this message appeared "please use 'dev_boot_altfw' insterd of 'dev_boot_legacy')
crossystem dev_boot_altfw=1
shutdown -h now
So after all of that, i turned it back on but there was no “OS verification is OFF” message. But i was on the boot menu. and after pressing ctrl+L this message appeared.
Can you guys help me. I'm not a big tech guy also english is not my first language. So sorry for my bad grammar.
Would this laptop work? Found one for 99$
So, I was installing Tails on an external USB drive and after it had finished, a windows message just came up and said 'Operation Unavailable', then it stopped me from accessing my USB drive through file explorer. The drive works on other devices but doesn't have anything in it. When I tried and access the drive on Windows, it just says 'This operation could not be completed, access denied' . After unsuccessfully playing around with permissions for half an hour, (although I am already the administrator), I decided to eject the disc (which Windows still let me do).
Now the drive will not show up on my file explorer, settings, control panel, device manager, etc, and the device connected notification doesn't come up, but my computer still makes the little ping noise thing that it does when a device gets connected. After 5 days of research and doing Terminal stuff to try and fix it, it still doesn't show.
This all happens whenever I use BalenaEtcher and it tried to verify the file after installing. It says 'Verification Failed' and then the system goes bonkers and kills the drive. Only way I could bring the drive back to life was by putting it on my Mac computer, then formatting the whole drive. Btw, on Mac it showed the drive to be full with the tails files and stuff, but on windows it was empty. After resurrecting the drive the first time, i tried installing tails again, same thing happened, and then also with ALL my USB sticks
I'm on Windows 11 version 23H2.
Ask for specs or whatever in the comments for this if it will help you guys help me fix it.
Thanks
When selecting a Monero's wallet keys file, I get a message that Monero can not find the wallet file. In fact the file selection dialog box does not allow browsing the file system.
This is strange because it worked one time when I enter the exact wallet name and directory. Since than I am unable to do it.
After years of no issues with this Lenovo T460, I suddenly received a boot issue on my tails USB. I have tried disabling secure boot, and other bios related suggestions. I’ve tried boot commands, I am open to anything that may be able to fix this issue. Are there any other known workarounds? It’s strange this exact setup has been working previously and decided today not to comply.
Having the worst time trying to do this Any input is appreciated
Every time TOR updates we have to wait a few days for Tails to update and we have it updated, but is it safe to use Tails even with the old version of Tor? Or would it be better to wait for Tails to update it before using it again?
Asus rog zephyrus g15 Using windows 11 as the main. Tails loads up properly but no wifi. Also when I try and shutdown it freezes with a bunch of text on the screen. Tried the lspci -v | grep "Network controller" command but it doesn't really show anything about my network like in the support stuff for tails.
Tried disabling Mac address but still not working. Saw on another reddit post maybe downgrading to 5.7 but I figured I would ask around first. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.
I installed Tails a long time ago on my USB Drive. Since then I updated my CPU from 3700X to the 5800X3D and my GPU from Vega 56 to RTX 4070. And updated my BIOS for the 5800X3D to work. It worked 100% before those upgrades. The mainboard stayed the same, so it can't be the chipset...?
Error Code when booting: nouveau 0000:26:00.0: unknown chipset (194000a1)
I don't want to reinstall everything :(
I tried installing Tails Linux for the first time, and it gave me a Unknown Chipset Error and also a bunch more error i got. I'm assuming this is a hardware issue on my end and of one of many error i also got while trying to boot tails up
I'm running AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D and X670e Motherboard W/ 4080 Super. Is there anyway to fix issue or do i need to run with the CPU integrated graphic to work this out any help? would be appreciated thanks
I just bought the Panda Wireless Ultra, which is listed as one of the three Wi-Fi adapters that work with Tails.
However, when I start Tails on my 2013 MacBook Pro and plug it, it does nothing.
Tails doesn’t see it, enable the Wi-Fi or nothing…
Should I be installing a driver?
Thanks for any advice beforehand 🙏🏻
.
Since tails doesn’t support almost every wifi adapter, is that possible to or work if I use a wifi adapter with drivers in it? If so, would you recommend a model? Thank you.
I want to make a copy of my Tails USB and the site says I shouldn't clone it if the Tails version is not 6.4. I checked and I'm running 6.3, can I clone the installation and update afterwards? I don't have time to update right now.
Hello i recently installed tails and i am trying to install some tools like ex. Fluxion from the githup using [git clone] but it’s didn’t work so i downloaded the zip file and when run it i got error like ( some file path are messing etc ?
Anyone now how to install tools from githup or which other repo tails use ?
Hello, I don't know if this the appropriate forum but I was using tails recently with persistence. I downloaded a file that was supposed to be a video tutorial, 7zip I believe, however the built in unarchiver tool couldn't open it so I just assumed it was corrupted or something and just moved on. Not long after I shut down tails, unplugged the USB, and booted back into my main Windows OS. Upon login, three command terminal windows opened for a second then closed. I checked event viewer and didn't see anything particularly suspicious in powershell, and the windows opened and closed too quickly for me to see what they were doing. I assume this was just something, maybe drivers or other startup programs just doing something given windows was "down" for a few hours while tails was open. I've seen a similar event (three command windows opening and closing) after my laptop had been off for basically an entire day before. But I'm broadly curious if its possible some sort of malware was passed between the tails usb with persistence to my main OS/drives. I assume no given tails lives in RAM and that should have been cleared on shutdown, but I'm curious if this is something I should look into or be concerned about, or its really just incredibly unlikely and I'm being a bit paranoid. Thanks.
Anyway way to change the first tab that launches after starting Tor? Don't get me wrong I like the tails homepage, but it gets annoying after some time, anyway to "fix" that?
Does anyone know how I can get some CAD software to run off a USB drive while runing Tails OS?
I have been trying to use CAD software while operating on Tails but haven't had any success. I've tried various methods of downloading both Solid Edge Community Edition and FreeCAD onto a USB drive and running them from there, but nothing has worked. When I try to run them I get a message that says "Oops! There was a problem running this software. Unable to locate the program".

Description
I have tried to boot into tails multiple times but run into the same issue. When it boots it often restarts multiple times showing a few errors on screen before rebooting. Eventually after a few reboots it finally looks like it is going to load but the screen just flashes greenish white. Then it is stuck there. No keys or mouse movement / clicks do anything, I have to power down.

I created my persistent storage in tails, Password protected it. So now I would like to store my keys in there, and I have no idea how to do it. I’ve been beating my head against the wall and I know it’s something very easy and I have no idea how to do it. No matter what I do I’m not able to move a file into persistent storage and save it. I’m used to using windows which I’m sure it doesn’t help here. But I’m trying to copy and paste my PGP Key into a file in persistent storage. obviously this does not work. Or if it does, I’m not doing it right. Can anyone please explain like I’m five and help me with this I would greatly appreciate it.
I’m looking for a usb drive for tails and came across this. Thought maybe a good investment to put tails and how to manuals that I’d want to keep private.
Hey guys, I need some help here. My laptop fell off the bed and unfortunately my tails USB was plugged in. I didn't have it backed up yet either...long story short, I had just sent monero to my feather wallet. I redownloaded tails onto a new USB and set up a new persistent and was able to recover my feather wallet using my seed. The problem I am having is that my feather wallet won't connect to a node now so I can't download the block chain to receive my funds. Does anyone know why this is? Are my funds permanently lost now? Thanks in advance.
I'm running a mac Intel core i7 and for some reason it does not allow me to adjust the screen resolution, unfortunelty this does not allow me to connect to tor which is a bitch and a half. Have any advice? The screen is initally grayed out and then if i hover over. Afterwards its not nonetheless it still does not work. I'm running tails off Vm machine it seems like an unusual result. Forgive spelling I am drunk
Hi, I’m using tails on a gaming laptop, which has a nvidia 1660ti and an i7. I also use an external monitor. My laptop screen works perfectly but my monitor is completely white, aside from the top, which frequently glitches on and off.
