On my third rewatch. This scene is hilarious. He truly looked terrified for a serial killer LOL.
“Jesus Arthur, what the hell was that!”
I am doing the Dexter rewatch and they actually make a reference to the needle mark on one of Dexters victims necks - but ofc at this point it was not correlated with the BHB, I def didn’t remember this when I watched New Blood.
its not a good ending, lets be honest and call a spade a spade... no one was pleased with the ending and rightfully so...
but i cant help but feel this was 100% the intention, every aspect of this last episode is disappointing, but is it also genius? this whole season starts to give you the feeling "maybe dexter will have a happy ending", after the gut punch that was season 7 with Deb finding out, but then somehow coming to accept it and maybe even become complicit and understanding in what dexter does seems a little to good to be true for the titular anti-hero no?
This whole show has spent 8 (9) seasons demonstrating that dexter cannot live a happy functional life, yet he always finds excuse and reasoning that truly isn't there to keep on going, time and time again he learns that he hurts everyone he loves, he is a vacuum of destruction.
Dexter burnt every bridge, made every bad decision and left a trail of pain and lack of CLOSURE to everyone he came across and i think this last episode demonstrates this beautifully by not only ridding the characters of any closure but also the audience.
lets start with debs death, not only is this disappointing to see in and of it self but the manner in which it occurs is almost unforgiveable, she dies off screen at the hands of 2 people 1 being the most unremarkable villain that dexter saw in its entire 9 season run and also dexter himself... the villain leaves her in a vegetative state, but dexter pulls the plug literally and metaphorically, i think this is intentional, we are supposed to be frustrated and left with very little closure, next dexter does the number 1 thing that sent the fans into an irate frenzy, he dumped Debs body in the ocean...more on this later there is a reason i think it works.
Debs death is seemingly the most disappointing thing in the episode, however a list of other things that could have been great but were handled poorly (I'm telling you its intentional) , Dexter's revenge on Saxon, we as fans expect to see dexter put an end to this incredibly boring villains life as he took away Dexter's as well as our emotional link, killing Deb should be the 1 most unforgivable thing in Dexter's eyes, and as fans we want retribution, we want to see Dexter kill him off in a super satisfying gory and spectacular fashion, but we got a fucking pen to the neck, we as an audience don't get the closure of seeing this character killed off in an interesting way just as Dexter feels zero closure after killing him... regardless Deb is still dead.
Perhaps my most disappointing moment in the show (season 9 is also a victim of this), no realization that Dexter is the bay harbor butcher, no man hunt, no trial no epic scene of Dexter with the mask off no experiencing the pain, bewilderment and shock in the eyes of the characters we have grown to love when they realize that Dexter is a monster. This shit was built up for 8 seasons and we got none of it, what did we get given? a 2 minute scene of Bautista and Quinn watching footage of dexter Killing a man and then moving on because he deserved it.... no questions asked no nothing.
i could bring up Dexter leaving Harrison with Hannah, I could bring up how short seemingly pointless and hollow the Vogel story line was but by this point i think you get the picture..
I genuinely believe all of this was intentional, i believe they knew they couldn't create a perfectly satisfying ending so i believe they went for the most cold and realistic approach they could.
Dexter is first and foremost the most selfish character ever written, we love him but we know and its our love for this monster that is the reason we are all disappointed, we have been rooting for a serial killer we deserve no more closure than the characters in the show.. Dexter was the cause of Deb’s death (i could connect the circumstances between Trinity and Saxon and how its both times Dexter didn't kill someone that caused the deaths of loved ones) but that's the fucking point, its too late, there is no going back from what he has done his whole life and in real life there is no closure.
Quinn doesn't get the closure of saying goodbye to Deb because Dexter dumped her in the ocean like all his other victims, because make no mistake Deb is a victim of dexter, as we love Deb we are also denied closure with a funeral scene, we are angered and uncomfortable with the fact that Dexter dumps her like another body, but he is a selfish serial killer, we really shouldn’t expect any different, he did what he wanted to do, what made sense in his head, (also know....symbolism) no closure for Dexter either, his sister is gone... the first thing he swore to protect. Dexter then boats out into a fucking hurricane and subsequently becomes a lumberjack, watching it and reading it is disappointing as fuck but just as all the characters in the show we are left with no SAY IT WITH ME NOW that's right... closure... as fans we wanted to see either a happy ending or the ending where dexter got what he deserved, what we got was neither of those, dexter didn't get the closure of dying for his sins, instead he suffers, no loved ones, not even his inner monologue to keep him company, he will never see Harrison again.
IMO Dexter season 8 is not a great or enjoyable ending but honestly i think it might be the ending both the character and we as an audience deserved, Dexter was a horrible human being but we loved him, he destroyed the life's of everyone else around him and in the end he kind of got what he deserved, he did this to himself and we were on the sidelines cheering him on and our reward?.. nothing in real life you aren't always given what you want and how many families of murder victims never saw the closure for losing there loved ones? and yes all the people dexter dumped in the ocean were serial killers and rapists but they had families that didn't know that and were denied any form of closure... because it is down the bottom of the ocean along with Dexter's and ours.
I think that's pretty good story telling.
i would assume that since he cuts them up part of the fun in his mind would be their horrified expressions and body language, but he just kills them quickly before dismemberment. is this because it makes less of a mess if somebody isn’t trying to escape or moving around?
This bandana REALLY works for him… what y’all think?
Also his backtats?? What a freaaaaak love him so much
Seeing Dexter's reaction after he punched his neighbor was one of the reasons why I like this show. Here you have a man that literally manhandles and murders killers and he pretends as if this is his first time having a confrontation. I don't know I guess the irony of it is just hilarious. This is my first watch through(so please no spoilers! ) but up until this point what are some moments that made you kind of chuckle?
When Dexter was researching Trevor when he first came onto him, a document he researched showed his birthday as being November 24th. I remember because I said to myself, “that’s my grandma’s birthday!” However, later on in the season he showed another one of Trevor’s documents and it showed 11/2.
Another one is in the episode when he goes to get some of the blood in Jordan Chase’s necklace vial. He states, “a 30 gauge needle should pass through undetected,” and then pulls out the same syringe he uses to M99 his victims. The syringe has a greenish color where it the needle screws into it, indicating that it’s actually an 18 gauge needle (larger). When Jordan Chase goes to get the necklace and a drop of blood comes out, I find that to be pretty unrealistic too, unless Dexter spilled some I don’t see how blood (which is relatively thick) comes out through a 30g hole.
I mean who cares really, but just some things I thought were interesting. Have you found any?
I have a lot of appreciation for season 2 — it might even be more foundational to the rest of the series than season 1. AND it features a ton of great writing and character dev.
ALSO, the actress, Jaime Murray is great! She excels at making me hate her character.
But good god I just cannot bring myself to sit through Lila’s wackadoo shenanigans again.
Am I fkg up by not revisiting S2? Should I just bear down and get through her chaos?
in dexter, he was born in 2009, right? so in s8 he was 4. i looked it up, and it said in new blood he’s 16. then it says his bday is march 2005? SOMEONE EXPLAIN
I've seen Dexter at least twice, including New Blood. I really want to see Dexter content but Dexter OS doesn't come out for another month, and Dexter Resurrection almost a year from now 😮💨
Now I don't know what to do anymore
If he killed debra and they went on their killing spree, how far do you think they would've gotten? What consequenses do you think would follow?
(no spoilers pls)
It's almost tradition for me to post here when I'm on ep 11.
I didn't like Laguerta the previous seasons when she wanted to make Debra fail, but for some reason I really enjoy her getting close to knowing who Dexter really is.
This is one of the best seasons ever, and since in almost every season at the end there was a plot twist, I'm hoping it lives up to my expectations.
Just saw Dexter acuse Hannah of poisoning her sister, and idk what's gonna happen, but I imagine hannah ends in prison or smth.
Appart from hannah I guess there's gonna be another plot twist but I genuiently have no clue, and I love that.
Let's see how this ends.
(sorry for my bad english) what if Lila and Rita means like, the conscience of Dexter? i mean, Lila has an L with represents the left side, the devil, and Rita has an R, which represents the right side, the angel. i was thinking about if for no reason, just wanted to say it 👍
So I just finished watching new blood and I thought it was a top 4 season in Dexter overall behind seasons 2,4,1. I was surprised the hate new blood got but I heard it was mainly due to the ending but since I already knew resurrection is coming out (which picks up after new blood) I really liked the ending. It’s like when a TV show seasons end in a cliff hanger and we have to wait for the next season. But I definitely do understand why people would say the season is bad if that was the ending overall in dexter. Does anybody else agree with this statement?
I feel like the unironic humor and the narration of dexter makes him a lot less scarier and easier/more enjoyable for an average person to watch, kind of how a laugh track makes some sitcoms easy to watch.
But just like those videos of sitcoms without laugh tracks are awkward, how scary is dexter without his unironic humor and narration?
I just started watching Dexter original series after watching season 1 I thought wouldn’t it be cooler if Dexter actually went with his brother and killed deb. Do some point it actually would even make sense I mean Brian is his blood brother the only one like him wouldn’t a spin off serie be cool where it’s like a what if Dexter chose to follow his brother. Thoughts??
They look great on my TV
SPOILERS ABOUND
I just finished the last episode of the last season of Dexter. It’s my fifth re-watch. (I thought it was my 4th, now I think it’s my 5th…possibly even the sixth!?!?) It always makes me sad whenever I finish a good show or a good book. “It” by Stephen King comes to mind…finishing It was like having to say goodbye to a group of close friends.
But Dexter always gets me too, no matter how many times I watch it. Unlike many on here, I love, yes love, ALL the seasons. Like everyone, I have my favorites (2, 3, 4, 7…yes 7, that’s not a typo!). But the loss of Deb is still so painful. Worse than Rita. Deb was my favorite character.
And I cannot be the only one who was overjoyed to see Kenny Johnson have a guest role! Love Kenny. (He played Curtis Lemansky aka Lemonhead aka Lem on The Shield…one of my all time favorite shows ever! I always missed him after what happened to his character on The Shield. And his character—U.S. Marshal Max Clayton—gets killed in Dexter too…shame on all these evil writers for killing him in 2 of my favorite shows!)
So, I was just hoping that a lot of others out there enjoyed the ENTIRE show…including season 8, or should I call it season H8? Lol
I’m looking forward to my first rewatch of New Blood…then I will be ready for the new Dexter show that’s about to come out!
Oliver Saxon could've been such an amazing villain if the writers spent a bit more time on him. I think he should've been one of Dexter's most difficult victims.
If HE was the one to KILL a big character like DEB, then he should've gotten more screentime at least.
What do you think?
I thought that this actor, Darri Ingólfsson, was a great casting choice. So innocent looking yet at the same time so creepy!
What do the Dexter fans on Reddit think? Would you have picked a different actor? If so, who?
Angel batista is one of my personal favorite character in dexter and I loved when he came back in dexter new blood but what’s your opinion on him
Dexter Resurrection
I want to see Harrison leaves the Dexter town then decides to look up Astor and Cody. Astor or Cody are in a problematic situation a day or two after he meets and hangs out with them. Harrison kills the problematic situation but Astor and Cody dont know.
Possible problematic situations could be abusive bf for Astor maybe she grew up slightly like Rita or Cody got in a gang and his getting threatened or the guy who sells him drugs and he is in debt.
Anyway Harrison kills and then he sees Dexter, saying Good Job You saved your brother/sister.
This happens in the first episode or so. Then throughout the season, Harrison hears Dexter following him being his dark passenger, telling him that he needs to kill and needs to plan it and also Harrison feels the need to live a normal teenager life. He is a junior or whatever in high school and Astor and Cody recently graduated from college or have been working for a few years in some menial jobs. Maybe one of them, Astor is the teacher in the school Harrison is at.
The season ends with things getting out of control. A girl/girlfriend of Harrison is raped by the entire football team in the school. Harrison cannot control it and he kills every person in the team. He does get caught. He might have good physical capabilities as we see in New Blood, but he needs a Harry or needs to learn how to control his impulses which we will not.
After doing this he says something like I am Dexter Morgan Ressurected and this creature cannot be left alive because he cannot not kill and kills himself.
Let me know what you guys think of this
The Seasons after 4 are a bit shaky but the upside is seeing Dexter become more comfortable with the human side of his emotions. He loves Deb. At the beginning of the series, he didn’t know that he did. He was “fond of her” but its love described by someone who has no idea what feelings are. Harrison, he loves. Sure he’s not a conventional father, but he adores Harrison and I enjoy seeing them on screen together. Even Rita and her kids.
As a viewer I can see where his relationships go from being covers to Dexter being motivated by his emotional ties and not protecting his dark passenger.
Honorable mention, Batista gains a lot of depth in the last seasons and he’s one of my favs.
Why didn't Harrison go live with either astor or Cody, I figured they would have been grown by then and had houses and stuff so why did he bounce between foster homes when he could have lived with his brother or sister?
So I’m rewatching Dexter for like the 4th time. The good thing about having a shit memory is that I can rewatch shows and still forget big reveals.
Was there any clues that the writers left for us that Travis was acting alone throughout this season? Other than never seeing the two of them together from someone else’s perspective.
