Genuine question! Would it be rude for us to take handouts right now? Specifically hot food that these restaurants/churches etc. are handing out?
My family was impacted very little compared to others by the hurricane, we lost power, water, service of course but we have everything back except water (which we will not have for weeks) We have a 6 month old baby and one income so we don’t have much to spare after pay day anyways, but this month especially. Nothing really to complain about but nothing to boast either. We haven’t taken a single hand out or anything from anyone except water, which we desperately needed and are very grateful for. We have been able to buy groceries we need, but it is a challenge to wash our dishes every day with bottled water, especially with a baby.
Again, would it be unethical to accept the hot meals that are being handed out?
This was emailed to me by a local realtor. Best resource and information I have received in regards to water updates yet. Everything goes through the rumor mill and I have not vetted. My family just signed a 10 day lease in Raleigh.
Hi everyone, below are some more updates and info on Asheville. I hope this helps!
Water System-36 inch bypass line was fixed. Last night staff was able to pressurize adjacent area. Turbidity is still problematic. It's critical to remove sediment in order to move water into filtration system. Private contractor will put in "curtains" into the reservoir which will speed up the settlement process. The other side of the curtain will need similar treatment processes. They are trying to do everything they can to get the reservoir to settle. They are starting to move water into the Asheville City water system. They are going to chlorinate the water to clean it.
Timeline is fewer weeks than when they started. But they don't want to give an estimate.
Swannanoa and Tunnel Rd have significant damage to pipes. As they move Westward, there is going to be damage that needs to be fixed.
Water is going to have significant sediment in it. Clay particles are a challenge for sediment process.
If you begin to get water. You still need to boil. Use bottle water otherwise.
Pressurizing N. Fork. Still limited to one bi-pass line. The process branches out. They cannot restore all of the city at once. They must restore the system one section at a time - As they start controlling and restoring a section, it will allow air that has been trapped to be removed ftom the system. And then they have to flush the system.
You may see water coming out of hydrants.
They will also find breaks in waterlines. They have workers on standby to fix those breaks as they slowly open up lines - It's a measured and incremental process. They will be moving westward slowly towards Asheville.
Area's close to N. Fork will receive water first. Area's furthest away will be last.
Swannanoa may get water first. Ground zero will be a tremendous amount of work. Once past this area, they believe it will go faster. This weekend is dedicated to that area.
Town of Black Mountain is beginning to get water. DO NOT DRINK IT EVEN AFTER YOU BOIL IT! BOIL IT for at least one minute. Town of Black Mountain's water is only safe for flushing toilets. Not safe EVEN IF BOILED.
1st Stage of Pressurizing is tough. Damage will need to be fixed. Small holes will shoot up spouts of water.
Mills River plant has reached as far north as Oakley. Border area's where N. Fork and Mills River will be valved off to try and keep water sources separate.
Will the city test the heavily chlorinated water? Yes - After treatment process is started...EPA will track levels. They will be as cautious as possible. They don't want to damage their filters. They do daily testing already.
Mills River has been working, but has had to be stopped in sections to fix areas. So some people got water and then had it turned off. Area's with high pressure lines were having difficulty.
FEMA is on the ground at Black Mt. They are set up at AC Reynolds. They will always have a badge and never ask you for money.
At future press conferences, a map will be shown in which sections will be serviced with water and in what order.

Does anyone know if the greyhound bus in avl is still operating? I was hoping to use it as a ride out to Greensboro. The pick up spot was at the shell gas station on Swananoa, but knowing the damage out there I wonder if the bus can even make it.
I might be late or asking something that’s been asked talked about or done but is anyone bringing supplies via drones ??
Hey all! I’ve applied for DUA assistance since I’m out of work temporarily because the water’s shut (worked at a restaurant). Does anyone know if I’m still supposed to be registering and applying for new jobs? I currently live with my parents while doing college, and so I’m able to wait it out until the place reopens.
UPDATE AT 8PM 10/11 Water crews reconnecting the main at North Fork !
@cityofasheville water crews are connecting the 36-inch main to service in the community starting at those homes closest to the North Fork Reservoir, and as they go, water will begin flowing. This water will have a lot of sediment, so turn off those ice makers! Thank you to these crews for working around the clock!
I’m your neighbor just slightly east of you. We were not severely washed away. What do the communities need as the temperatures are getting low? I know a lot of people here who want to help. I feel that I can get a reasonable load there. I just would like to know what you need with the change to cold.
I got approved for tsa but I'd like to know if I can switch hotels once I've stayed at one for a few nights?
With colder weather approaching in the coming days, (down in the 30s) are there any opportunities or organizations providing ways to help? I.e delivering blankets, space heaters, etc, to those without power.
I don’t have any physical items to donate. But I have a 4x4 pickup, a full tank of gas, and a desire to help deliver and set up heaters or whatever for those who have no way to get that stuff on their own.
I live in Waynesville, but am willing to go wherever there’s a need. Any ideas where we can go to help?
Does anyone know if azalea park and the pond are accesible?
I'm with a person who had a 9:15 pickup with Greyhound. The location he was given is the one Greyhound has been using for a while -- the Shell station on swannanoa River Road. That's blocked off right now. Does anybody know if Greyhound is currently running to Asheville, and where the pick up location might be?
To the cashier at Harris Teeter while I was checking out with my bottle of wine and my salted caramel ice cream thanks for being so sweet and yes, I am so, so tired.
Looking for the classic 55 gal repurposed barrels or something similar - tis the season! No luck on Craigslist and FB marketplace, and would rather support local than ship something in via one of the big box stores. Thanks!
I was standing in line today and about ten ppl in front of me were discussing this. I’m not educated on the issue which is why “yay Reddit 😂”. Just trying to get an explanation on why this is a big issue all of a sudden. TIA and love you all. We will be strong like we always have.
Hi, my name is Joel, I have a big magenta mohawk and I have witnessed some true humanity this evening. I am asking you not to view this post as virtue signaling or any bullshit like that. I love seeing my fellow Ashevillains thriving in spite of shit. If you need a case of water I got you. It's just heartwarming to see all y'all again
Hi all. Might anyone know this man? I have seen him for over a year screaming and shouting incoherently at people near my work on Tunnel Rd near Cornerstone. Today, I saw him walking in front of cars and almost get hit multiple times.
Asheville PD identified him as Jared Metcalf.
Hopefully someone on here knows him and can get him some help. He seems like he’s suffering from drug induced psychosis and/or debilitating mental illness.
They are receiving more donations this weekend so very likely will be open for the same services next week
Follow them on Facebook to see when they are open or message the director if you have a question!
Stay safe out there everyone <3
Looking for a place to drop off between downtown and black mountain on a drive out of town tonight. Anyone have leads?
Looking for a healthy escape with a good book I had placed on hold prior to the storm.
My Discover credit card is is supposed to be due on Sunday. When I go on line to pay it on line Discover indicates I do not have a payment due ( I do have a balance). I received my bill before Helene came to town, is this happening to anyone else?
Their headquarters is in Charlotte, could Discover be forgoing this months bill because of Helene?
Sounds like distro stations may only be pumping non-potable water for the time being. Filled my car with cases and can deliver. Let me know if you are in need. I will keep this going as long as possible.
Edit: good fallout but u/azulun - I'm not 100% certain about the lack of potable water trucks at distro sites, but was told by the people working one of the West Asheville stations that trucks would only be delivering non-potable water for the foreseeable future.
Obviously, that could be inaccurate or it could change at any time. Trying to help people who don't have transportation be prepared in case it is true.
Does anyone know of working public restrooms available right now? I’m in the Montford neighborhood
