I have to drive from Waynesville to Hot Springs on Thursday

My family says the required roads are all passable. I'd like to run supplies up there if possible. I see that I need to drop them off at the elementary school before 5:00. I don't see a specific list of requested supplies anywhere. And I don't have the extra money to buy supplies myself so I was hoping you guys could tell me where around the Canton or Waynesville area might have excess supplies that they could send with me up to Hot Springs?

Can anyone verify this story?

The whole thing is so incredulous and ultimately vague (responses to comments asking questions) that I have serious doubts that it's not just another made up story to drum up engagement for a monetized account. Surely someone else witnessed this and can vouch for it?

Food truck or trailer donation/use?

Anyone out there have an operable food truck or trailer?

Got a chef friend in Marshall, who lost their kitchen, who will feed the town with one. Preferably ongoing for the foreseeable future.

Mortimer and Wilson Creek Area

Has anyone heard about the condition of the Wilson Creek area in general? Beyod Mortimer there are some super small and remote communities. Several years ago they had a large flood and lost roads and bridges, and it paled in comparison to what they've received with Helene. Has anyone heard how the area and communities are faring? Hard to fathom getting all the way back in there knowing what others are going through.

How did the Robbinsville / Topton / western portion of the Nantahala National Forest fare after Helene?

Please don’t get mad at me posting this since it’s not urgent or providing resourceful information, but was this area also hit badly by Helene? I’ve heard tons about the communities east of this area, but not much about this area. Me and my family stayed here for a few days in a cabin back in June and loved it, and I would be sad to hear about any major damage to the area, but I am curious. Some more specific places I’d love to hear about is Nantahala Lake, Lake Santeetlah, the Wayah Road area and the communities of Nantahala, Kyle and Aquone as these were areas we drove through a lot.

10/4/2024 Hurricane Helene Response Update from McDowell County Emergency Operations Center

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 4, 2024

Ongoing Operations in McDowell County Operational efforts in McDowell County remain robust as we prioritize secondary searches to locate missing persons. Our dedicated teams are actively working to gain access to isolated communities, ensuring that no one is left behind, and that commodities continue to reach them until access is established. In collaboration with FEMA, we are also securing locations where individuals can complete necessary paperwork and access vital resources. McDowell County Emergency Services Director, Will Kehler, said, “It is all hands on deck. We will not stop until all our citizens have access to roads, food, water, and other resources. We are moving the needle daily with extreme collaboration and coordination from our community and assistance from many outside our community. We will not fail; together with our citizens, we will be stronger.” Search and Rescue Operations Update McDowell County has received 440 missing persons reports through our call center and the online reporting form. As of this morning, 347 individuals have been safely accounted for, and their families have been notified. As power and cell phone service are restored in McDowell County, we have observed a significant increase in reports of missing persons. This surge highlights the importance of our ongoing operational efforts, which focus on conducting secondary searches and providing answers for concerned friends and family. We recognize that there may be duplicate reports, but we are committed to treating each report individually until we can confirm the status of everyone involved. The McDowell County Sheriff's Office, in collaboration with federal, state, and local law enforcement teams, continues to work diligently on the remaining 93 reported cases, ensuring that every lead is thoroughly investigated. These teams are conducting extensive search operations throughout the county to ensure that all individuals are found and reunited with their loved ones. As of this morning’s press release, McDowell County has confirmed only one fatality as a result of Hurricane Helene. Secondary searches are still ongoing, and we will provide updates to the public as soon as authorities notify us of any new information regarding search and rescue operations. Hiking in supplies 10/11-10/13

Looking for solid information:

Myself and a small crew of experienced hikers/backpackers are looking to assist a fire department or police department all of next weekend by hiking in supplies to unreachable areas. I understand that roads will be cleared between now and next weekend, so I'm looking for LEGIT contacts who can direct me next Thursday on where to plan on heading to, and can assist with those new routes. We will have backpacking gear/supplies and can do wellness checks. Please do not post the generic county resources, I've seen them.

We also can possibly fly in with someone and hike the supplies from there.

Serious responses only. I worked with Sumaritans Purse and have made trips out with them, but we would like to assist the first responders now.

Edit to add: we're near Charlotte, so route info from that general location

French Broad River Contaminants

This was a video taken Friday after the storm at Silverline Plastics, a pvc pipe company directly on the French broad river. We watched portions of the building walls collapse and expose multiple of these bags seemingly filled with tiny bits of plastic. Multiple of these bags got torn open and sent down the river releasing so much micro plastic into the air and water. (Pic in comments)

That being said I am heavily concerned for the amount of contaminants that could currently be in the French Broad River. I’m just guessing there would be micro plastics, solvents or other chemicals from factories like this, gas and other fuels, corpses wether human or animal, feces and urine from multiple porta potties, etc…

If anyone has seen any official sources on the French Broad Rivers contamination please link it here. Thanks.

Assistance for those not receiving FEMA aid

I'm hoping someone has info on or can direct me to aid for my situation. I was living with a friend who's home is now currently unlivable, so I don't think I can qualify for the FEMA aid from what I've read even though I could desperately use it for a motel and gas and other needs. I have applied for it, I'm just not getting my hopes up from what I've been reading. My son and I have been living in my car for the past week, and thankfully have been able to find plenty of food and water, but gas to get to those resources is becoming an issue, and due to a few issues in need of attention, my car isn't the most reliable so I'm concerned about that. We were able to find somewhere offering showers but we are in need of clean clothes or a way to wash the ones we have. I have a phone now that I'm able to use when I can reach wifi thanks to someone being generous enough to give me an extra one, but no money to buy a phone card at the moment. I am eternally grateful for all the resources being made availabile right now, but I've got expenses that I've got to figure out a way to meet too. Even if there's no financial aid I can qualify for, I am willing and able and would honestly love to do any kind of work availabile where I could earn the funds fairly immediately to get us through this, stay busy, or help others in need. I'm open to any and all suggestions or opportunities. I would appreciate any help or information anyone could provide so very much!!

Who needs baby formula/food/diapers/wipes.

By boyfriend will be in Black Mountain, Swannanoa, and Asheville today and I am trying to find people who need DIRECT donations. We can also take requests and try our best to fulfill them. This is his home and he wants to help. He will come to you or do wellness checks. He also has access to a chainsaw for anyone needing help clearing roads and driveways.

He will be there all day October 4th helping ANYWHERE AND ANYONE WHO NEEDS IT. Please private message me if you need anything. His service and information he can find out there is spotty at best so I’m trying to do my best by supporting him at home.

Willing to hike in supplies or even a message

Donation needs - chewable Benadryl and similar

I've seen a lot of ppl on this sub asking about donations, etc. my brother was texting earlier and he said that a lot of the first responders, line men, etc. are asking for chewable Benadryl. He said at least in the Mills River area a lot yellow jackets have been displaced by the flooding and they are everywhere. He said it's difficult to walk outside without one of them coming at you.

He said a lot of people trying to work are encountering poison ivy as well.

This is just his perspective from talking to people trying to help in the area.

(I flaired this all all counties even though he's in Mills River as a I imagine it's something people will be facing throughout the area)

To all the leaflookers that come to the southern Appalachian mountains in October

If you have plans to visit western North Carolina in the leaf looking season? Please don't. Stay at home. If you want to send money, find a charity. Our resources in the places that were not hit with floods are strained because people went to the only grocery store in a small town and just bought out everything. Some of it was to send to those hit hardest, but a lot of it was resource hoarding by greedy half year residents. We don't have the resources for you too. Stay away, pray, send money if you want, but don't come here. Give those communities time to recover and rebuild supply chains, restock shelves, and bury and mourn our fallen brethren.

Are authorities letting outsiders in?

Wanna bring donations up to a donation site but didn’t know if they’ve barred outsiders from entering certain areas. Can anyone confirm you can get in and out of Weaverville safely? Need to see my family.

Helene private road carnage help!

Hurricane Helene just completely destroyed a bridge and road serving 10 residences and 30+ people on a private road in Edneyville. About 7 years ago the bridge washed away and the community banded together to raise over $40000 to replace it. We as a community are tapped out and don't have even close to the resources available to repair and replace access to our community. At least 3 houses are destroyed completely and we desperately need help. My partner and I spent the last 6 days evacuating sick and elderly neighbors down mountain paths and across a footbridge to cross the creek and access highway 64 to evacuate. Generator fuel is in short supply and we fear it will be months before we can access our property or have power and utilities restored. This is a low income community at the best of times and we have no idea how to move forward beyond initial evacuation. Please help us find a way to place our road under state maintenance!!! Thanks in advance and stay safe!!
